I wouldn't presume to call them the best 25 wargames, because there are still some good ones I don't know and I DO have my prejudices. For example, I like blocks, cards and/or ships in my games. Yet I think my tastes range widely. ASL and Memoir'44 are both on the list, after all. I do have reasons why these particular 25 stand out from the crowd of several hundred wargames I've owned or played. I offer them to bring them to the attention of other possible fans.

Update: It's been a while and there have been a few changes. I'll note which games are about to fall off the list in favor of the new ones.

Still my favorite. My introduction to block games. Strikes a nice balance between presenting history and a challenging game situation. My comments are based mostly on the Avalon Hill edition. I haven't had a chance to play the newer edition enough to make up my mind whether i'ts an improvement or not. The rules are better, there's more blocks and it seems more realistic. But the original version was so finely balanced, especially as a three-player game, that I wonder if that could be improved. The orginal game also takes less time to play, so you can easily play a match in one sitting.

I find that the newer edition is finely balance, a good three player game, and can easily play in under 2 hours. I disagree that it has better rules. They are absolutely terrible. There is really no excuse for it, as it is a 3rd edition game.

Late to the party, but I'll second the comment on the terrible rules. It all falls apart when you transfer the battle to the tactical map; no examples, poor wording, and inscrutable leaps in procedure.

Ended up selling it away.

Also my introduction to block gaming and quite possibly the best wargame I've ever played. I speak of the 3rd edition from Columbia Games.

Very finely balanced, and does an incredible job of covering the strategic choices, and constraints(!), the real commenders faced. Play this while reading Chandler's "The 100 days" to really appreciate the history and accuracy that went into this still very playable game.

I have and have played both versions of this game, and they are both worth playing.

The biggest differences are that the larger number of units in the Columbia version not only makes the game last a little longer, but allows different concentrations and maneuvers, while they still have their effectiveness limited by bottlenecking their ability to move large groups through an area all at the same time. The thing I missed in the Columbia version is Horse Artillery; I really enjoyed it in the AH version.

Every time I play it, at the outset, the game seems to be very obvious in its outcome, but I've never played two games that were alike. Very tense, and leaves you either exhilarating or crushing, depending on whether you win or lose.

One of the absolute best designs. The rules get a bad rap but I don't think it's entirely deserved. There is a lot of detail in the game and much of it is handled in a non-traditional way and that means a lot of words.

Having said that, I agree w/ C Farrell in that I think it could be redesigned to be more intuitive to learn and some details omitted without reducing the tension.

I generally don't buy descriptions of games that include phrases like, "It really makes you feel like you were the general in charge;" however, I think this game does give you a feeling for the frustration and helplessness that this kind of diplomatic discussion must make you feel.
If you don't have a poker face, you will after a few plays of this.

My first wargame. It really doesn't need any reason better than that, but it's still a good game, in my opinion. The most salient features of carrier warfare are scouting and "attacking effectively first" (Fleet Tactics by Capt. Wayne P. Hughes) It presents both with a minimum of fuss.

One of my first games also and thus a sentimental favorite. Really just an elaboration on "Battleship" where you search blindly for the ships of your opponent; but, the management of the carrier squadrons and the tactical combat with dive bombers, torpedo bombers, fighter escort/CAP etc. took it to the next level and beyond. Nicely conveyed the feel of the fleet actions in the pacific.

I like the game, but have found it plays better with a referee and no actual knowledge of history.
Most Japanese players are very conservative, since they know the US has 3 aircraft carriers in the area, where historically this was far from the case. The US has a very rough time of it, but I have seen one game where they smashed the Imperial Navy and got 2 carriers and the Yamato, and then escaped for a win on points.

This is, essentially, Battleship on steroids. Yes, that sounds cliche, but it's true. You still get to say, "You sank my battleship!" but you have to do a lot more to sink a capital ship than put a few red pegs into it. Easy to learn, not easy to win. I didn't play this for several decades after my first wargame, but I have to say it's still a great game in the present day.

This really represents an entire game system, Avalanche Press' Great War at Sea/Second World War at Sea series. The vast number of scenarios available are a naval wargamer's dream. Besides being a good low/moderate complexity naval game in its own right, each is a good scenario generator for naval miniatures campaigning. But 1898 is a little more. I've always had a particular interest in the Spanish-American War, and I'm thrilled that there's such a high-quality, mounted mapboard wargame on one of my favorite topics. One so obscure I never would have thought would get such a treatment.

After hundreds of played games I have to say my respect for the game system has grown. While the lack of meaningful command control rules and the small role limited intelligence plays in the game mean I don't consider it the last word in realism, the detail is fascinating and the game play is always involving. Every turn is filled with decisions.

My all-time favorite wargame.

For me, what sets it apart from all other wargames is its uncanny ability to always surprise you, even if you're replaying a scenario you've played many times before.

This goes beyond fog-of-war issues or successful low-odds attacks... things will happen in ASL that you simply just don't expect. This should ideally be true of all wargames, as almost every historical battle had the participants dealing with the unexpected, but it's very hard to accomplish in a game.

Most wargames are fairly predictable in terms of the course the action will take. ASL, however, can often leave you shaking your head and saying, "I don't believe it!"

Sorry, but I can't stand the indeterminability of elevation in Combat Mission. Having to shoot to figure out if I have LOS seems ridiculous to me. I know there's occasional exceptions but I like to know what is happening. I still prefer a board game of SL. Maybe I just need more practice, or I don't have the patience.

About computer vs boardgame.

A professor once told us it *feels* different when you are writing with a pen and when you are typing on a keyboard. He believes that emotions flows more naturally from the pen.

A quick poll: how many of you are actually posting with a pen here?

Put your hands down...

Conclusion: As time changes people can change too.

My favorite set of minitaures rules. A little different from most, in thta it's really a contest in command between the opposing player/commanders, rather than a simulation. This is not to say that it's not authentic, it is. But the deterministic combat system makes it an unusually chess-like game for a miniatures rules set and it can really com into its own as a duel between armies of toy soldiers.

This is another game that really represnts an entire game system. I like the TCS system for it's attention to proper artillery tactics and command control issues. Unlike most World War II-era tactical games, this doesn't use generic maps and representaive OBs but actual battle sites and troop lists. Semper Fi!, which is set in the Korea War, has some small, tight scenarios that make a good introduction to the game system.

Impressive quality art on the pieces - but....are those just paper map boards?

While I generally find that fine for naval games (small number of units, generally grouped in one or two spots), but land-based games with hundreds of counters spread all over the map....*shudders* I dunno, sounds like trouble.

How is the play on this? Command and control handled? Unit activation? etc? Lacking review on this seems tragic...

Another game I have a very long-term relationship with. I've been playing it since the orginal, Adventure Games-published, rule book. It replaced a set of very involved rules that I determined used a lot of rules without achieving more realism. The system has evolved over the years, but always been the premier modern naval warfare rules set.

Another game with lots of play value. If you get the whole Down in Flames series you have hundreds of planes and more than 60 campaigns to play. It would take a long time to go through all the options, another good "Daert Island" game system. Another game that I think captures the salient features of its topic without getting bogged down in meaningless detail. Also, as a card game, it's player-friendly. Easy to learn and each individual game doesn't take very long.

I am happy to see that you rate this so highly, considering all the wargames you have played. It is absolutely deserving.

It seems like I am always defending this one. It is a brilliant and steamlined design. I think it captures the American Revolution perfectly.

Probably the most intense experience I have in all of gaming is playing as the Americans against a very good British player. Retreat, defend, bluff, bate, strike...

I agree with both HOTS and Liberty being on this list. I think Hammer is a slightly better game, but both are solid.

Liberty is the best Revolutionary (U.S.) War that I have played.

I recommend gamers get one of these games and if you like it get the other because although they share some similar mechanics they are each definitely their own game with a distinct flavor.

Hammer of the Scots may indeed be a "better" game than Liberty, although "best" is a subjective concept. In any case, I stayed away from calling these the "best" 25 wargames, because even my collection has dozens of games I consider better in many ways than many on this list, but I don't like them as much.

I've been on this site for 8 years now, and I'm far from sick of games, but I think I am, to some degree, sick of learning too many new games. I'm also tired of playing 4+ hr multiplayer games, but I'll still happily play really long games 2 player.

Liberty is as much about when not to fight as it is about fighting. Not only is that historically accurate, but it makes for a great game wargame with a unique flavor.

This one, and Hammer below, are the 2 best block games I have played. I happily recommend either or both to folks looking into exploring wargames at a deeper level than Memoir '44 or Wings of War.

Somewhat underrated, I am convinced, because players fail to account for the fact that, against evenly-matched opponents, one would expect very, very close games when both sides start out exactly equal in every repsect. The company Web site has other scenarios and I, for one, don't expect to crush my worthy opponents every time I play. I expect to enjoy a close, hard-fought contest.

Update: This is probably dropping off the list in favor of some newer stuff.

Interesting that you rate this higher than Pacific Victory . Is it the openendedness and customizability that make you prefer this? I have a full set of this waiting to be played. I'm not a historical buff, so random, fictional scenarios is great by me. I really have no plans to get Pac Vic , but I was wondering what you saw as the differences that make this the better choice.

I agree that all the different choices make this a really neat game. The components are great, both in design and production. This game does demand asymmetrical scenarios and definitive victory conditions and game time limits to bring it up to its potential. Unfortunately, it looks like Columbia has nothing in mind for the future development of this game, although I suspect we will see future developments of the general mechanics. Pacific Victory is a great cousin to this game, but it doesn't have the great tactical/operational feel of Victory.

It can be a little bit random, so here's my solution.
The Memoir '44 Drinking Game!

When you roll more than one Star, drink!
When you roll a Flag that moves an enemy out of range of further attacks, drink!
If you have no cards in your hand that match a region where you have troops, drain your glass.
If you are forced to retreat into Ocean, killing a unit, drink! with a little salt!
If you are forced to retreat off of the board edge, killing a unit, drink!
If attacking troops suddenly get sandbags from lord knows where, drink!
If you fire on infantry and roll all tanks, drink!
If you fire on armor, and roll all soldiers, drink!

Above all, whenever you are playing, never, ever forget to, drink!

Real war almost certainly involves this much luck too. I mean, 1 milion situps and God knows how many miles of running with a pack on your back, becoming an elite airborne warrior of the Falchirmjager/82nd Airborne/2Para only to break your neck on your first drop because a tree gets in the way.

The problem here is that the luck can get in the way of a skillfully played game.

Once again, the debate of whether this is a wargame or not is moot, and to be honest, more than just a little silly. It's a great game, and it doesn't detract anything from "true" wargames by being a good, fun game.
Sometimes, I play Memoir, sometimes, I play Panzer Leader.

I first got into wargaming through my interest in naval miniatures and after a lot of tries I settled on this computer-assisted rules set as striking the right balance between realism and playability for me. My only problem now is a good illustration of why manual boardgames have their advantages over computers. I have lots of 30-year-old wargames I can play anytime I want. I have a 12-year-old computer wargame that's nearly obsolete because I don't have an operating sytem that can run the old DOS software.

Just a very interesting game situation, allowing both sides to attack and defend. I nice use of classic wargame mechanics. I'm suprised the idea hasn't been tried in other games.

The idea will be used again soon in the next C3i magazine from GMT. It'll be a Battle for Germany-like variant for Europe Engulfed.

The map shown in the picture reminds me of Guns of August made by Avalon Hill. Guns of August was my first wargame I played and it brought me lots of fun. It's a pity that the game is not on your list.

Dude, You should see the LARGE set that a gamer in Columbus, OH made for this game. The counters are an inch square and fairly thick. Even fat-fingered people like me can easily play the game. He should have it at the Next Origins.

This is a tentative placement, because I haven't played it but once, but I'm very, very impressed with what I've ssen and I'm looking forward to my next game. This has got blocks, so it's got a leg up.

Update: Now played, no longer tentative

Go for it Seth, this is a great game.
I think it's extremely good for grognard who spent hours on strategic WWII monster games, as it gives a lot of flavour and decision in a manageable timespan.
Definitively a must for all the people that has no more free time as 10 years ago.

It's a great game, but it's so long that it's hard to find someone with enough time to play it. It's also got a lot of little rules added in, which increase the historical accuracy but add a lot of flipping through the books, especially considering the rather unhelpful reference cards. Of course I've only been able to play this once too, so I could be wrong.

Awesome, awesome, awesome!
This game is just cool to set up, cool to look at, cool to tell people about when they pass by and want to know if it's "like Risk," or "like Axis and Allies."

But you know what? It's also cool to play.
But plan on eating once or twice before finishing. It takes a long time, and it's hard pushing millions of men all over Europe.

I think this game is brilliant and represents a leap forward in accessible yet thought-provoking design. No dice, minimal chance element, good replay value, excellent components, fair price, and a system that rings true to history without bogging down. My guess is that we will see many more games with this system or derivatives thereof covering virtually the entire linear-warfare era.

I think this game is a lock for a Charles Roberts award. (That's like a wargame Oscar.)

The rules are brief, interesting, and have a very thoughtful one-page designer note section at the end. 10 pages total, I believe.

It's innovative as hell, but draws on concepts much older than Tactics II.

Available for download here: www.simmonsgames.com

(The above is also a model for how wargame websites can be.)

This is one of those (rare) games that have simple rules that bely a very complex and nuanced system. The first time I played this (after reading the the rules through a couple of times) I really didn't know what to do. Only by the end of the game did I start to see some of the amazing subtleties that BaM hides in its box.

Despite some flaws, this makes the list now. It's collectible, true, but not insanely so. I've been able to get at least one of eveyr model. And the basic game is easy and fun.

Hey Seth,

These block games...I've never heard of them before joining The Geek. I used to play Squad Leader, SFB, Panzer Leader, but none of them seriously and (unlike yourself) I grew quite tired of the long games and even longer rulebooks. But, I'm intrigued by Hammer of the Scots (or Liberty).

How long are the rulebooks? How long does it take to set up a game and play a scenario? Will I have to pour over the manual to find section 12.3.2.5(b) only to discover I've misplayed the game for 2 hours and we may as well quit?

Sorry, some unresolved irritation from my wargamming days left over there - I can hardly expect you to sympathize, but I figure you'll be well equiped to advise me!

Vince

Wow, a lot of those games are pretty involved/long playing time. Do you actually find peoople who are willing to sit a whole game through?

Chris, I've been playing wargames since March, 1969. During considerable portions of that time period I had more time and opponents than I do now. So yes, I have played almost all of these. There are some games I own that could have made it on the list if I'd had a chance to play them mroe. As it is, I included Europe Engulfed and Bonaparte at Marengo because of my extremely favorable initial impressions. More play could cause them to slip off the list.
