This is the traditional weekly thrift and bargain finds list.
These lists may start empty, but as always, add your items.
Put in what you consider a bargain, tell us how much you paid and the place you got it from. Bargains can be thrift store finds or any second-hand purchases or discounted boardgames bought new. Don't forget to add your encounters with the Thrift Store Irritant Squad and any other embellishments in order to make it even more interesting.
Our GeekGuild: Welcome to The Ancient and Loyal Order of Thrifters. Enter the halls of thriftdom at your own risk. Please do mind the stacks of prized games, do not mention the musty smell and try not to sneeze. Make sure to bow before our King Belial I, and pay your due respects to previous Kings Great_Mazinga, minionhunter, Krazygit, EvilTimmy and Blackwind.

$5.99 at Value Village. 3rd edition with Mexico included.
As an illustration of the stocking frequency at this store - this was found during my third visit to the store today. At my first visit, some games (none of interest) were being stocked as I was looking at the shelves. New games were apparent on the shelf at all three visits!
This looks to be too heavy/long for my taste. I'll likely try to trade/sell it (locally).
After reading a bit more about it, I'm thinking of keeping it. It looks like it could be fun to play and is playable with two.
Yeah, you can imagine how happy I am that Chris goes to the local Value Village so often. (I was there around 2:00pm today and would have loved to have found Empire Builder.)
I would recommend at least trying the game. It's not that heavy*, although it can be a little long. While you can shorten the length by playing to a lesser total, that does affect the game in subtle ways and is probably not recommended.
*It's not heavy rules-wise, but it can be a little intimidating at first while you decide how to build your railway. It's difficult to distinguish a good layout from a bad one until you have a few games under! your belt.
I don't usually go there that often. I didn't even go last week, but only because I was on holiday! So that means it was put out between 2 and 3pm. Thanks for the tips and recomendation to play Greg!
The first time I tried this game, I did it with my mother and father in law. They took FOREVER! They just couldn't make a quick decision to save their life. We played the game for almost four hours!
Please don't let that scare you off from playing the game. Just don't play it with people who like to take lots of time to think through each move.
My lad is not well so I had to take a walk to the chemists which just happens to be next door to the local hospice charity shop. Picked this up for £2. Has a nifty timer device which should speed up our word game evenings. More importantly, my lad was able to take part in the evening cricket match at the county ground and bowled really well.
Ja! Ich fand das Spiel bei St. Vinnies für 1,95 $. Komplett ausgenommen vom Zufall Karte, die vielleicht noch in den Kartenstapel werden. Schöner Zustand.
I probably just insulted someone by using Google translate.
1983. Great condition. I happened to be there as the girl came out with a shopping cart full of toys and games. Not sure if this particular SVDP site has a daily gamer gobbler, but I'm sure he/she would have grabbed this.
All contents here and the 65# vellum card stock cards are perfect. The box is about a 7.0 on a 10 scale (slight indent on the bottom of box). Game board is 2-sided and with typical Ravensburger quality.
Not the pictured set, but it's the closest in the database. This poker set has a nice wooden box with latching lid, with four colors of nice weight clay chips still sealed, two sealed decks of cards, and a set of poker dice. I dare you to pass it up for $0.99!
Looks like a set I grabbed a few years back. Cigarrette company (not naming) gave out as a promotion, probably after X number of package coupons. Clay chips. I got mine for $1 without cards,
Seventy-Five cents at a garage sale, missing the instructions. Everything else looks brand spankin' new. Fortunately, the rules sheet is posted here on BGG.
Now just a couple of days ago I found one of these still shrinkwrapped. I said at the time I'd wait for an opened one to come along to play. And it did - $3 at a garage sale today.
The gaming gods heard my declaration and really want me to play this game.
1953 Popular Edition of Monopoly. Popular Edition came with an extra token (the scottie dog). Complete except for one wooden hotel and six wooden houses, contents well worn/loved. Good thing I thought to look for the board, they came separate from the box back then.
Lol. Scottie dog rules. I was pretty psyched to find this, it's very cool. But they're not very valuable, there were an awful lot of them made, and for many years.
Why, oh why did I buy this? One of those purchases you're regretting even as the money changes hands. Talked a lady at a garage sale way down, and then had to buy it. Wish I hadn't, don't need this. Anyone want it? Sealed brand new.
OK, I lied, I got to do a little more thrifting this week due to a spur-of-the-moment 'Let's not do house-repair work today' trip north. First of my finds today is this abstract strategy that proudly declares 'Featured on Star Trek: The Next Generation' on the cover.
Featured as a set element, perhaps; I don't remember ever seeing any of the main cast playing this one, just seeing it set up in the bar.
Anyways. Complete and with all of the spare pieces intact.

Last find of the day. This one's incomplete, but *mostly* there; going by the numbers on the box, it's missing eight cards and the rules (and there's one more card that'll need replacing because it's bent rather severely, and thus is very plainly marked). But it's a game I've been eying for a while, so yeah.
Well, either way, I posted to the parts list, and sent off a request to Rio Grande Games for replacements. I know from experience that Jay over there is good about that (though I'm probably going to get charged a fee).
Now if only whoever replaced Thaadd over at Fantasy Flight would bother to reply to my parts request with *them*...
Yeah, I've gone to him before for replacement cards (in my case, after someone dumped an energy drink on the table while playing Dominion ) so I know I'll pay a little. But I'm OK with that.
GiftTRAP California Edition in Cincinnati? Found this in perfect condition (cards still in shrink) at the GW in Beechmont for $4. The next day will be 50%-off day, and pristine games like that don't last long, so I jumped before the price drop. Will add this as a math trade sweetener, I think.
When they started this liquidation, I thought about picking up Say Anything, as it was a game I knew Borders usually carried. However, Say Anything was already gone when the first weekend of the liquidation came, or so I thought...I don't know if someone hid it in another part of the store, or what. But I go tonight, just to see if there was anything to get, and found the one copy of Say Anything now present dead center of their main game shelf. Got it and picked up a few packs of Lego Minifigs for the kids.
Now there is some Voltron minis game that is full price at $50 (inflated, if you ask me) that now goes on my price chicken list, but definitely waiting for a much better percentage. I don't know anything about the game, but I am a Voltron fan from childhood.
I had 2 damaged cards from a Killer Bunnies that I thrifted and Playroom Entertainment mailed me 2 replacements and a set of KB promo cards for free...so I'd have some faith in their Customer Service (I might even still have the email from the rep that helped me)

Oh i've used Playroom to complete several sets of Killer Bunnies, including Dice. And Sitting Ducks.
They are a great company to work with. I only originally worried if it was out of print, but it still shows in their online catalogue so I should not have a problem.
Does anybody have a scan of all the "My Sheep" cards. Or maybe a list of what is on each, so I can also replace that. (hard to replace if I dont know which i need).
$3, VV I've been looking for this ever since someone pointed out that there's a 3D electronic tower doo hickey simiar to Dark Tower. Glad to find it, disappointed that it's missing quite a few pieces such as: The central tower, 3 of the vertical panels, all of the outer boards and a few coins
I added a new section in the header labeled "Other geeklists which may be of interest". Just 4 (two of which used to be in the header), but they tie into thrifting. If there is already too much in the header, let me know and I'll be happy to delete it but I thought keeping related geeklists in the weekly thrift lists could be handy. On the other hand, if you know of any others which should be included in that section, please let me know. Also, if everyone is okay with the recent additions I made last week too (the flea market geeklist), I'll be happy to update the Creating the Weekly Thrift Finds Lists
I no longer allow myself to go on Thrift Hunts. Haven't for a couple of years.
In order to keep my Thrifting hobby, well, thifty - I only allow thrift crimes of opportunity. I must be driving by for another purpose in order to stop.
I do respect this view and see the value of it. I guess I look at it from different perspective. 80% clothes come from thrift stores (only way I can afford designer labels), almost all my classroom school supplies come from thrift stores. Last week I saw a mouse run out of my garage, this week I picked up four mouse traps still in factory packaging to deal with the problem. We have so much stuff produced in the world and so much of it goes to waste. I love thrift stores. They keep perfectly useful things from going to landfills, while helping out a good cause (poor, individuals with disabilities, etc).
Basically if I need something, I check thrift stores first. I have so many thrift stores in my area with so many people donating, that I can usually find what I want. Games are great perk of thrifting. So is finding dishes that match my dishware, laniers for my flash drives, dishes that match my mother-in-law's antique dishes (will be awesome bday gift for her), and the list can go on and on.

My wife and I do the same thing. While games are the first thing I look at it's not the only thing. Comics, books, houseware. At Christmas my brother, dad and I typically exchange some thrift purchases.
We've also got into geocaching recently so we usually do a little thrifting and then some geocaching after we thrift.

I also fixed the anthem so it works.
I've updated Creating the Weekly Thrift Finds Lists Entry #4 has the code for this week's thrift list if anyone wants to use it to set up future thrift lists
Just click on 'quote', then copy & paste everything between the ---cut and --end---
the previous week's link will need to be updated but that should be the only one until we get into September
