Went a day early and stayed a few days late. 12 days of bliss after a solid year of working in some tough places. As always, a great time.

Started off with this one Friday nite. 5 of of us. Somehow 3 of us managed to get out before the red bankers took over. Used Jimbo's speed up variant (everyone starts with a factory and dock); worked well except we didn't have enough whackin of collies.

Had not ever played this gem. Fun game. Very Risk like; in that you pick your moment and go for the ring. Played two games of it with fun groups. Highlight was Rainman going into fare wars and then missing collecting like $30+.

I'm not a big fan of Hannibal, but always like to play a round or two in Stuart's tourney. Took a pounding as usual. One game as the Roman, I had Carthage completely stuffed. Decided to sack Carthage just for the glory of it. Got two hits on hit and then beat off by a MUCH smaller Carthagian army (my Scipo had 16 cards and the Has' had 6? cards - and still won). Carthage then made desperate lunge at Rome and managed to sack it first (three straight rolls, three straight hits - GAME OVER).

Tried the new edition. 7 players. None of us had played the new edition, but most of us had played the original SPI game. Only managed to play one full turn. Will give it another try. Highlight was purging Marvin before he even had a chance to move (he was away from the table) and watching him blow a sprocket.

After missing the PoG tourney last year, was happy to jump back into the PoG-a-thon. 6 rounds to win it all - 48 hours of game play. Pretty much melts your brains, since the games get MUCH tougher as the rounds get later. Frequently, the finals has come down to the last die roll on turn 20, impulse 6; game is that close.

Made it to the finals and had a very enjoyable game with Peter G (another great guy - a real sportsman and joy to play a long mind numbing game with). Peter G won the die roll to bid and went with an AP zero bid. I was tired that morning and didn't want to drive to decided to play AP for a change. Mistake. My AP had him on the ropes most of the game until an absolute disaster struck in the desert with Allenby getting pop'd. Turned out to be the difference. Big congrats to Peter G with his hard fought victory.

We were down on our PoG tourney numbers this year: 27. I think the fall-off was due to a mid day start on Sunday and just how big the precons have become; so many choices (this is good). Next year, we'll probably move back to Sunday morning - maybe go with the expansion cards (we'll playtest this year). Also, talked about moving two more victory cities: Minsk to CT and Mosul to Jerusalem. Shouted down doing a scenario; tried that once (only 7 of 48 players actually played it) and real men only play the campaign game.

Really like this game; nice contrast with the brutal boxing match called PoG. Was lucky enough to play against 3 good friends; Nels T, Grant and Rodney. All very fun games and one of the main reasons I attend WBC: to play challenging games with good friends.

Jumped in the 1776 tourney. Had one of the most enjoyable games of the tourney with late nite game with Breyma. Game came down to two battles, with us conducting 8 gut wrenching chit pulls in each battle; Rob knowing I needed to withdraw and me knowing that if I selected withdrawal and he selects frontal assault it will all be over; no tea party. cry.

My insurrectionists managed to slip away and win in both battles. Managed also to get spawn of Tom interested in this one; he'll be in the tourney next year. Alex is a budding PoG player and now we'll infect him with this fantastic game also as we train a future Jedi master. Alex helped me pick chits against Breyma and I think he got a real hoot out of it and the associated smack talk.

On Friday, I played my friend Steve Packwood in the semi's. His Brits (bid of 14) rolled over my rebels.

Always the co-highlight (along with PoG) of my gaming at WBC. Managed to play Padewan Pei and Bill Pettus on the way to the finals. Both games were very enjoyable. FtP drew over 32 this year, so we've probably got a decent shot at turning it into a 6 rated event (which means we could start awarding a coveted sand plaque).

In the finals, we had Mark Herman toss the die to determine sides; I was hoping to change my luck and not get stuck with the USA vs "the master". Mark rolled and I ended up with the CSA for a change. All good.

James and I then proceeded to set up the game. About 3 cards into the first turn, I noticed I was playing the USA. Herman looked over at about the same time and asked what the hell we were doing. Given that I've played James in finals 5 times - and lost 5 times as the USA - the look on both our faces must have been priceless; out of sheer habit we had just assumed our usual sides. (or, as Mark claims, James had just used a Jedi mind trick on me). Given that the game had already begun, the die had been cast.

The game started out well, with my USA whackin' the CSA real good - and James unable to form an army given his losses in the east. USA defended forward (up against Richmond). Lee came on and USA pulled back into forts in the East. USA lost the battle of Pittsburg/and W VA. CSA managed to get off some big raids (OH, IN, PA) in turns 5 and 6 and doubled the USA, despite very heavy attrition battles. I think I had a good chance to push this one into a long game, but a Red River campaign led me astray at the critical moment. Anyways, I had a great time playing James as always.

Great to see how big open gaming at WBC has become. Love walking thru the open gaming room and seeing what is getting played, what's hot and what's not (saves me buying games that are bunk).

A bunch of us card driven wargamers (Pei, Reese, Gaberson, Heinzman, Mecey) decided to give this one a go for sh*ts and giggles. Problem with the endgame in this one. Never liked crows anyways.

My group is always looking for the ultimate space 4x game. I think we've played them all and 99% of them suck. So, we were really looking forward to this one. Some gamers I really respect gave this one a shot. Oh my. Because my mother said to not say anything about something unless you have something positive to say, I'll bite my tongue, other than thank you Bob, Marty and Paul for saving me and my group some aggravation and frustration whistle

Bumped into my teammates late in the day and it looks like we the Nest scored 18 points, so, maybe a little short this year from grabbing our fourth gold ring.

Each year 5 of us jump in the NAP WARS tourney for a round. This year we had a great group Keith, Pete, George, and the new guy. Lots of smack talking with Keith's wimpy french going nowhere (despite almost destroying the entire british fleet). Highlight included removing his tall Nap counter from its leader stand and replacing it with the short Nap counter. Russians managed to win after finally prevailing in a series of brutal battles at Copenhagen.

Picked this up at WBC; really looking forward to it after Bob H pointed out it contains the 31st Infantry Regiment; I try to get every game either containing a Yudenich counter or a 31st regiment counter. Any game containing either has always been good, so, we'll keep using this selection criteria until it fails.

Reese recommended this one. He and Jimbo had given it a whirl at Swampcon. We played it Sunday evening and all day Monday. Great game. Very innovative and unique (strategic naval war 1805 - with one side running the French and the other the Brits). First big naval battle and Nelson got killed. Like this game; new vassal module now out also.
