There's a whole bunch of werewolf games out there, and this list is going to be used to keep track of them.

While the history of werewolf is a little fuzzy (general consensus is that is was derived from Mafia, which was a game played in Russia for many years and popularized by a professor there in the 80's), the game itself has evolved in the past ten years to take on the form of a great modern party game. The rules and roles have all evolved over time, but the core gameplay of having a group of werewolves who know each other versus the rest of the players who are trying to figure out who those werewolves are is intact.

A quick note regarding Mafia: The crazed power-hungry goons at Wikipedia refuse to give werewolf its own page, instead lumping it in with Mafia. Mafia is popular online and on high school/college campuses, and slightly more in Europe than the USA, but werewolf has been much more popular over the past 10 years. Read the discussion page for Mafia and you'll see any number of people requesting werewolf to have its own page, only to be shut down by the powers-that-be at wikipedia. If you have some thick skin, and you're a fan of werewolf and never have played Mafia (like the majority of people), you might try to get it split off. Good luck!

Of course, I'm not without my own biases. Take the comments here and below with a grain of salt, as I'm the designer and publisher of Ultimate Werewolf: Ultimate Edition, which was originally created (at least, Ultimate Werewolf: Whitebox Edition was) because the current commercial versions disappointed me. Those versions have gotten better (see my notes on them below), but as a gamer I can't see why anyone would choose those versions over Ultimate Werewolf: Ultimate Edition. In fact, if Ultimate Werewolf: Ultimate Edition had already existed from someone else, I never would have published it in the first place...I was filling a hole created by the other versions.

Werewolf is great fun and something that all gamers should try at least once. It's not for everyone, there's no question there, but with the right group of people, it should be at least a *little* bit of fun. With the wrong group, it can be a terrible, horrible experience, and I'm afraid that many people have had a "first game gone wrong" and will never give it a second chance.

As the writer of http://www.board2pieces.com, I've published a bunch of werewolf-themed comics over the years, and have included some of them here as I felt appropriate to the topic at hand (like the one above).

Werewolf has its own entry in BGG (and up until a few years ago, it was the only entry, as individual games didn't get their own entries). The thing is, anyone can create their own version of werewolf with index cards or playing cards. Of course, that'll result in a kind of ghetto village, but if that's the atmosphere you're going for, it'll totally work.

The basics of werewolf:
Each player receives a role and secretly views it. The role is either werewolf, villager, seer, or possibly another special role (but these are unnecessary for the basic game). A moderator (who isn't playing) directs the activities of the game.

Then everyone (except the moderator) closes their eyes, and the moderator has the werewolves wake up to see who the other werewolves are. They close their eyes and then the moderator tells everyone in the village to wake up, and sets the stage for the rest of the game: There are werewolves about, and it's up to the village to figure out who they are and lynch them!

The first day is probably the toughest for everyone, as there's very little (or no) information for the village. Still, it's best for the village to lynch someone, because there is a chance they'll get a werewolf, and if they don't, there's NO chance to get a werewolf. The moderator directs the process of lynching, and once someone dies (and is eliminated from the game), the village falls asleep again, with all players closing their eyes.

Then the moderator "wakes" the werewolves and together they choose a victim. Then the Seer awakes and is shown if a player is a villager or a werewolf. Then the entire village wakes again, the moderator says who was killed (they're eliminated from the game), and the village chooses a new person to lynch.

This continues until either all the werewolves are dead or until there are as many werewolves as villagers (technically, it could continue until all the villagers are dead, but once the werewolves are equal in numbers to the villagers, the villagers don't have a chance anymore, so the game is usually called in favor of the werewolves).

Within that structure, there are a number of different ways to play; many of them will be discussed within the games that follow below.

The first published version of werewolf was Looney Lab's Are You a Werewolf? This mini card set was black and white only, with some pretty basic art, but it totally captured the spirit of the game. There were no special roles (though it did have a moderator card), and played "8-15 players" only (though of course you could combine sets to allow more people to play). This version set the stage for many more to come....

This was the version of werewolf that I first played, and I instantly had a love/hate relationship with it. I liked the game werewolf so much that I instantly bought/ordered this as well as Are you a werewolf and Lupus in Tabula. The love part was with the game itself (werewolf), not the particular version. This version has been around for 10 years, and due to its low cost and availability around the world, is the most common version of the game.

Miller's Hollow has very funky artwork...either you love it or you hate it. It's very modern and crisp and super stylish, but the stylization comes at a price. It's also super international: there is absolutely no text on the cards, so Asmodee saves a lot of money by printing these up for all languages at once (just using a different box/ruleset for each language). Miller's Hollow was also the first version to include a number of specialized roles outside of the standard werewolf, villager and seer, even though most (if not all) of those roles had been around prior to its publication in various forms.

The drawbacks to Miller's Hollow, however, are what really led to the development and publication of Ultimate Werewolf:

1) Square cards that can't be sleeved. Werewolf is often played at night, when people are eating, drinking and being generally messy. Gooing up a card is a common issue.
2) No text on the cards. This is great for the publisher, because they don't have to print a different set for each language. But for the player, especially the new player, that lack of text can be confusing.
3) Not enough werewolves/villagers: with a big group, your options are limited.
4) Scant rulebook: The rulebook is minimal and doesn't provide any tips on playing/setup/etc.

Because of my frustration with Miller's Hollow, I developed this version of the game. The art was mediocre (many would say ugly), but it addressed every single one of those issues in the previous entry.

As a publisher, these were a TON of work. I printed the cards out on my commercial printer (Xerox Phaser 7760) and hand cut them. The reason each set came with sleeves is because I couldn't cut them so they would match exactly! However, I did include a pretty cool innovative feature due to the sleeves, which was simply inserts that covered up the front of the card. The player could slide them up to view the title and role description. Neat!

Once I had shipped about 600 of these sets, I realized I should really be getting these done commercially instead of hand creating them...

So...I published this version. I love werewolf, and this is what happens when you publish/design something you really love. You get the best product possible!

I decided early on I wasn't going to cut corners...I was creating a version of werewolf that *I* wanted, with everything in place to make werewolf games the best they could possibly be. So this version included:

1) 80 cards. That's right, 80. I didn't want anyone to ever say that they didn't have the right cards for a scenario.
2) 40 different roles. Variety keeps people coming back to werewolf, and Ultimate Werewolf has this in spades.
3) Dozens of Scenarios. Preset groups of roles that worked well together for games. Once you've done a few, it's easy to make up your own.
4) Name of the role on the card.
5) Role description on the card (2010 edition and forward). I didn't do this for the initial version because it was printed for English and German. But it's so critical to the game, that it is now standard.
6) The balance system. An innovative, simple way to balance werewolf games. Good guys have positive numbers and bad guys have negative numbers. It's not an exact science, but it makes setting up games easier and results in much better balanced games.
7) Scorepad. A great moderator will be even better if he has a little notepad to track the roles of players.
8) A HUGE rulebook. 24 pages of tips, strategies and more.

This oversized version of werewolf came out in Italy in 2009 at Essen. The art is intense, and the quality of the cards is awesome. The text is a little difficult to read, and the roles are a little odd, but for a collector, it's a great set to have.

The compact edition of Ultimate Werewolf only includes 40 cards and 25 roles, but that's still way more than any of the other games (except for the Ultimate Edition, of course). And it's only as big as the cards themselves, so you can fit it in a pocket easily.

This version of the game is from italian publisher DaVinci, now DV Giochi. Mayfair used to publish the English version shown here. This is often referred to as the "kid version" of werewolf because of its cartoony artwork. The original version has since been supplanted by a nicer "deluxe" version with slightly enhanced artwork. It's supposedly very popular in Italy (where werewolf very well might be played by younger players more often).

This is the first expansion to Ultimate Werewolf, including six new roles based on classic movie monsters. The biggest hit from this set is the Teenage Werewolf, who is so excited to be a werewolf that he must say "werewolf" each day! The role is great to kickstart a day one discussion (who said it? who didn't?). Another favorite is the Blob. The blob slowly absorbs players one at a time (without them knowing it). Once everyone in the village is part of the Blob, the blob wins!

Artifacts adds a whole new layer onto ANY werewolf game (not just Ultimate Werewolf). Each player is given an Artifact card. Each card has a special power that the player can use at any time in the game. The catch is that the use of the power is public once the player "reveals" his card. Check out the "card of the week" series on the page that goes into depth on each of the cards.

Artifacts solves two major issues in werewolf: The First Day Randomness and the "I'm only a villager...again" problem.

By giving everyone Artifacts, some will be used on the first day, giving out real information to the village.

And even plain old "vanilla" villagers will have some sort of power that they can use during the game.

The makers of Lupus in Tabula came out with Lupusburg, which was designed to bring werewolf to groups of 4-8 players. Unfortunately, it was widely panned by game players, as the experience just didn't work for smaller groups of people. The Resistance ended up doing this much better (though without the werewolf theme, unfortunately).

More of a deluxe version of Miller's Hollow, the Village also includes a new expansion of sorts, with houses the players can visit to give them special abilities ("trades") which they keep until they are taken away from them. You can actually buy this *instead* of Miller's Hollow, as it has the cards from the original in nice chunky cardboard. Unfortunately, it makes it incompatible with the New Moon Expansion's role cards (if you used the stickers on your original cards, you'll need to buy another copy of the New Moon expansion).

Little is known about this expansion except that it is only compatible with the DaVinci version (Lupus in Tabula). There are 10 new roles and an assortment of other items you get in the box. This looks like it won't be published by Mayfair, so it's unknown if there will be an English version or not.
