Welcome to the Setpember 2011 edition of the GMT P500 update list.

Subscribe today: GMT Monthly P500 Geeklist Announcement Thread

September has arrived. Labour Day weekend is upon us as is the return of kids to school. I don't know if this means more time for gaming or not, but what I do know is that the fine folks at GMT have not been idle as they have announced four new titles! They're the first four items in the list this month, so you can see for yourself what's up. One expansion, one deluxe treatment of another VPG game, one solitaire game, and one monster game.

While I was away on vacation the last two weeks of August, I received a nice large parcel with my copies of No Retreat! The Russian Front, Sekigahara: Unification of Japan, Space Empires: 4X and Infidel. I am simply stunned at the production values in those four games. Seriously. Never mind playing the games, I like just having them set up on my table to look at!

As if that weren't enough, GMT has also announced some news on its electronic games development front. Check out the details at the GMT Games home page.

On another note, I've noticed a real surge in popularity of Kickstarter board game projects. I like to think it's thanks to the wargame companies with their P500 systems that designers are doing that.

I'd like to ask the people to thumb this list every month when they come by. It makes me feel appreciated, and hey, who doesn't like to feel appreciated?

Thanks to everyone for their continued kinds words of support of this monthly geeklist and also for your helpful suggestions.

If you do have any comments or suggestions, please do send me a geekmail message or post in the comments section.

New this month: Four new titles! Circus Train (deluxe), Manoeuvre: Distant Lands, Navajo Wars, and The Battle for Sicily.

Making the cut: Four games this month, Andean Abyss, Fading Glory, Roads to Moscow, and Saints in Armor.

Current Preorders: 673 (+38)

First announced: April 2011

Current Status: Made the cut

Preorder Price (List Price): $19 ($29)

Number of Players: 2-6

Comments: Another solid month. Should be easily into the 750 range by Christmas and possibly over 800 by the time it gets to print.

Game Link: http://www.gmtgames.com/p-342-dominant-species-the-card-game...

Game Information: 40,000 B.C. — A great ice age is ending. Another titanic struggle for global supremacy has unwittingly commenced between the animal species.
Dominant Species: The Card Game is a fast-playing game that abstractly recreates a tiny portion of ancient history: the ponderous rescinding of an ice age and what that entails for the living creatures trying to adapt to the slowly-changing earth.

Players will use six major animal classes – mammal, reptile, bird, amphibian, arachnid or insect – to further their goals in various terrain. Through wily card play, players will strive to become dominant at as many different terrestrial and sea biomes as possible in order to claim valuable victory points: It is survival of the fittest.

All of this leads to the end game – the final descent of the ice age – where the player having accumulated the most victory points wins the game.

But somebody better become dominant quickly, because it’s getting mighty warm...

I have and enjoy Dominant Species, what is the draw to this game for folks that have and enjoy the original? I would love someone to convince me to pre-order this, but I just don't know why I would play the card game versus the boardgame.

We've found playing time for the card game to be about 15 minutes per player -- so 30-90 minutes altogether. This makes the game an ideal filler for the end-of-night finale or, as we sometimes do, play several games of this in a row.

The card game is far less expensive than the board game and will come in a more portable package (as I understand it the box will be GMT's standard for smaller games -- about 9" x 6" x 1.5").

The card game is muuuch simpler than the board game, both in terms of rules weight and in-game analysis of play options. The (near-final) rulebook runs to twelve half-sized pages: the equivalent of six pages of DS board game rules. This includes about fifteen graphics, including examples of play. However, while simpler than its predecessor, the card game still carries with it a good deal of both overt and subtle strategic and tactical depth.

Set up and clean up of the card game is short. You can teach it to everone at the table in five minutes and be playing in six.

Combined, these features provide for a broader availability of potential opponents for you.

Enjoy!

Those are all the reasons I pre-ordered it. Also, when you're done, cards can be used to make cool motorcycle sounds on your bike.

The draw for me is twofold.

The first is the (assumed on my part) better game experience for 2-3 players. DS is best with 4+ in my opinion, but my gaming opportunities are often 2-3.

The second is the inferred shorter playing time. My wife really likes DS, but after getting the kid to bed, we usually don't have the time that a full game of DS would call for. Not to mention that DS isn't ideally suited for 2.

Neither is the card game.

Didn't really care for the board game, but for some reason the card game might hit the sweet spot, as if this was always meant to be DS's true incarnation. Can't wait to try it!

First announced: June 2008

Current Status: Made the cut.

Preorder Price (List Price): $55 ($79)

Number of Players: 2-4

Comments: A nice bump in orders in what's been a quiet few months on this one.

Game Link: http://gmtgames.com/p-234-crown-of-roses.aspx

Game Information: Crown of Roses is a 3-hour block game set during the turbulent years of the Wars of the Roses in 15th Century England. This 35-year long conflict saw the extinction of a large number of noble houses, and would eventually set the house of Tudor upon the throne.

In Crown of Roses, players take on the roles of the dynastic giants - the House of Lancaster and their Beaufort cousins, and the House of York. The four player game adds in the powerful House of Stafford, and the ever-scheming Richard Neville and his son, Richard of Warwick, the 'Kingmaker'.

Columbia's RIII is akin to Hammer of the Scots in terms of style and complexity. It's a straight up battle for the crown game.

This game, based on my reading of the rules and what's been discussed in forums, is more akin to the old AH classic Kingmaker.

Me too. I only played Kingmaker for the first time last year and liked the idea of that kind of game well enough and think this should at least be as good (if not better) based on what I've seen so far.

Current Preorders: 827 (+18)

First announced: October 2010

Current Status: Made the cut

Number of Players: 2

Preorder Price (List Price): $37 ($50)

Comments: Nice solid gain this month.

Game Link: http://gmtgames.com/p-328-commands-colors-napoleonics-expans...

Game Information: The Spanish Army is the first expansion for Commands & Colors: Napoleonics.

At the time of the Napoleonic Wars, Spain was only a shadow of its former power. Spanish troops and leaders, as many Napoleonic historians point out, performed badly on a large number of occasions. Yet there are a number of battles, Bailen, Tamames, Alcaniz and San Marcial where the Spaniards fought valiantly and gained victory. Ironically, the point most historians overlook is the fact that the Spanish armies constituted a threat that the French simply could not ignore. As good as Wellington’s Anglo-Portuguese field army was, that army faced multiple French armies. They could only defeat one French army at a time. The Spanish Armies and the accompanying guerrilla warfare against French troops tied down the remainder, allowing the Anglo-Portuguese army to ultimately emerge victorious.

In this expansion you will find 18 historical scenarios that focus on Peninsular battles fought by the Spanish army from 1808 to 1813, plus all the new units you’ll need to field for these engagements.

Heh, just not enough two player time, and a lot of competing un-played two player (mostly war) games - certainly not a difficulty thing.

Of my two main gaming groups:
One is made of mostly Euro/AT players, several of which don't care for war games, even simpler ones;
One is made of mostly war games oriented players, some of which feel the C&C system is too simplistic and gamey (based on Ancients). Of that group, the ones that are willing I don't see out of this multiplayer setting, where we generally play Euros or wargames that support multiple players.

It will get played eventually, but after having purchased three or four expansions for Ancients, yet only having played a few scenarios of the basic game - and a similar situation for M'44 - I'm a little burned out on picking up expansions until I feel a need for them.

That said, I did get Epic Ancients in the hopes that I can get that into our multi-player war game group (which unfortunately for that game, numbers 5 players).

Game Information: We are Sparta… More than a line from a movie, The Spartan Army is the sixth expansion for the Commands & Colors: Ancients game system.

The Spartan Army expansion features over 20 scenarios, which focus on a period of time from 669 BC to 338 BC. In the early battles of Sparta against Argive, we see the development of Hoplite armies. We then move onto the war with the Persian Empire and take a closer look at the battle of Thermopylae, 480 BC. This is actually Twilight Struggle's graphic, but since 1989 is based on TS, this is a handy placeholder

Game Information:
1989 is an exciting, fast paced game simulating the end of the Cold War in 1989. During this amazing year, a series of democratic revolutions ended the 40 year Soviet empire in Eastern Europe. 1989 simulates the political, social and economic aspects of these revolutions using a card driven system similar to Twilight Struggle.

If they keep pushing release back you are no doubt correct.
Nah, actually it's good they decided to playtest just a little longer and get rid of that imbalance. I am just a bit disappointed since this one was supposed to be my second and also last p500 order this year and now I will probably be my first preorder for 2012.

What's the end of year sale? (I'm new to P500 this year.)

For the last few years GMT has had a little sale around October or November. The details can vary, but the discounts can be quite fantastic if you have had a pre-order during that year.

I think it depends on the number of games you received, something like a 10% per P500 game you received this year with a maximum, but I am not sure.

It is really a killer for me as I end up ordering over 100 euros and get %$&$"·$/(%&·&· by customs.

Complexity: Not listed
Solitaire Suitability: Not listed

Game Information: Great Campaigns of the Thirty Years War (GCo30YW) is a two-player game of operational warfare in the 17th Century. Armies maneuver on a point to point map of Southern Germany based on the road network available at the time. Each game is centered around a major battle or full campaign season. A Turn is a month divided into a variable number of impulses. Each army has a hand of Campaign Cards that control the amount of activity it may perform, the supplies it must expend, and a special action. Each impulse features one card play per army. Forces are concealed off map so players are faced with limited knowledge of the enemy. The major activities are maneuver, foraging, besieging fortifications, and an occasional battle. GCo30YW is a low-complexity game with emphasis on the players maneuvering their forces, but many decisions await. The low rules complexity allows each player, rather than being encumbered with rules, to focus on choices regarding how to manage his campaign.

Does anyone know why the production delay on this one continues? The topic, to me, leads to an absolute automatic order. If the delay is a design issue I am glad GMT is looking to make this game the best it can be.

The designer, Ben Hull, is in the military and was recently deployed again, so his ability to contribute to ongoing design and development is perforce curtailed.

Current Preorders: 1029 (+59)

First announced: April 2011

Current Status: Made the cut

Preorder Price (List Price): $59 ($89)

Number of Players: 2-6

Comments: This game is king queen of the hill as the only one with 1000+ orders at the moment.

I don't have enough superlatives to speak about my excitement over the announcement of this game. I knew it was in development, but that it's finally going to see light of day is simply outstanding to me. Based on what I've read of the game so far, I might even like this one more than Here I Stand, which is a game I simply love.

Of course, this game is another one of those which has a very long playing time. Notwithstanding this however, it's on my personal P500 list. There are some games that one simply must have, and this is a must for me.

Game Link: http://www.gmtgames.com/p-341-virgin-queen.aspx

Game Information: Virgin Queen: Wars of Religion 1559-1598 is a game of grand strategy for two to six players based on the military, political and religious conflicts within Europe during the reigns of Elizabeth I of England and Philip II of Spain. Each player controls one or more of the major powers that presided over European politics in that day. Spain is the juggernaut, able to draw upon the vast riches of their global empire. But such a dominant power is sure to have many enemies. The Ottoman expansion towards Spain’s Mediterranean outposts remains unchecked. Elizabeth’s English sea dogs are poised to raid Spain’s overseas empire. And the forces of Protestant reform will soon drag Spain into eighty years of rebellion in the Netherlands. Will Spain find aid from its Catholic allies? Perhaps not from France, where the Catholic Valois dynasty is soon to engage another group of Protestant believers in the bloody French Wars of Religion. And even Philip’s relatives in Vienna who rule the Holy Roman Empire may dabble in the Protestant faith instead of remaining loyal to their Catholic heritage and Spanish brethren.

I have really high expectations for this one. I like HiS, just not enough to justify purchasing it (esp. considering that I have no idea if it will ever see real table-time with my shrinking group). If VQ improves on those two or three things I dislike in HIS, it will be a worthy addition to my collection, even if it remains unpunched forever.

I'm torn. I think HIS is a fantastic game, but next to impossible for me to get played. More gaming goodness, but can I justify another title that will mostly languish on my shelves?

I'm excited to hear that they're heavily playtesting 4 & 5 player options, with spending CP's to activate the other major powers. One of the biggest problems I've had with getting HIS on the table is what to do if one player no-shows, and nobody is prepared to play two sides.

This one is quite intriguing. Considering it. Does anybody have a rough idea, based upon HIS, how long a session would typically take? I've got a friend who has HIS, but he's cancelled every time he's promised to bring it to the table.

Quoting from the game's page over at the GMT website:
There are several different scenarios included allowing your play sessions to be tailored to the number of players and time available:
2-Player Tutorial: Great for new players just learning the series, this 90-minute game pits the Ottomans against Spain during the time of the Siege of Malta and Battle of Lepanto. Uses a subset of the full rules so you can dive in quickly.

Campaign Scenario: The full Virgin Queen experience, this 8-hour game can last up to 7 turns and is normally played with from 4 to 6 players. Variant rules allow you to play with just 2 or 3 players if desired.

Armada Scenario: A quicker game focused on Turns 3 to 6 of the full campaign, this 4 to 5-hour game is ideal for tournament play. Once again supports from 4 to 6 players.

So based on my HIS experience, it looks to be about the same amount of time. This is fine by me - I know it limits how often I'll get to play it, but...

I received a nice large parcel with my copies of No Retreat: The Russian Front, Sekigahara: Unification of Japan, Space Empires: 4X and Infidel. I am simply stunned at the production values in those four games. Seriously.

I have to agree, GMT is one of the clear market leaders in production quality. Coupled with the P500 for Sales, and core insight for Marketing; their site is one I check constantly.

Thoughts for the future: I wouldn't mind seeing the designer listed for each game along with estimated playing time. Finding out those two pieces of information are the #1 reasons I click on the link to the game itself. For example, I lose interest in anything by Ted Racier as I am too old to live long enough to finish a game whereas Chad Jensen and Volko Ruhnke always catch my interest.
