Games I (and you) think are far too low on the ranking list, and not just a few hundred places... but not of the complex type, just for the casual gamers or family games that play well with children, ages 10 and up.

Not sure how this isn't a top 50 game.

Out of print status probably hurts it, but there are some very affordable copies in the marketplace it seems. (none of which are mine)

This is the first game I thought of, even if there are a few points that give new players a slight disadvantage.

First of all, it's a bidding game and a new player has no concept yet of the value of the items. The good news is, that the bidding is an open process that you can influence multiple times. New players can thus adapt to the strategy of the more experienced players.

Secondly, the abilities of the character cards need a little reading. If they are unwilling to read those, they will lose the game.

Those points aside, after the first play this is a real gem for most casual gamers because it's a quick and exciting game.

Furnishing a mansion with motorcycles and telescopes is fun. Throwing housewarming parties or guests who bring gifts is, too.

My sister loves the reverse auctions.

One of my favorites for large groups. Great, blind bid mechachism with a type of set collection. Gorgeous bits. We also only play with the advanced, magic-rich version.

Try it. Play it. Buy it. You are unlikely to be disappointed.

Can be taught to non-games in a matter of minutes.

Aquadukt (unfortunately now out of print), is a great tile-laying game for budding gamers - light, but with some interesting decisions and even some mild "take that" opportunities. A simpler cousin to Santiago that has never failed to please with anyone I've tried it with so far.

I tried to think of a game that I don't feel like I always add to lists like this, and the game that jumps out at me is Arkadia. I can't believe it's not even in the top 250 games.

Don't let the Tetris-like aspect of the board setup fool you - this is at its heart a stock market game. You have to figure out what stock (family seal) to raise the price of, and when. More importantly - decide when to cash out that stock. Is 4 coins per seal the highest it will go? Or will it drop to 2 by the time your turn comes back around?

Colorful, easy to learn, a delight. I wish I was playing it more face-to-face.

This is a good, quick auction game where cards are used for scoring as well as bidding. It plays up to six and is suitable for families and non-gamers. We like the tough decisions on when to bid based on what might be in the market at the end of the auction phase and if certain cards are likely to show up in the next bid. Scoring is usually tight.

Probably deserves to be in the top 1,000, but was unavailable in the US for some time. A friend gave us a copy after an order to Amazon.de went through.

Another game that has a healthy dose of luck, but with easily explained rules. Nothing deep here, but there are things you can do to control your winning chances including taking points away from your opponents. If you like tile laying games, then take a look at this one. I really do like the artwork.

As the 3rd published game from Micheal Tummelhoffer, who gave us Stone Age and St. Petersburg, I'm surprised how little attention this game is receiving.

There's basically 3 ways to score VP's:
Collect God tiles - require offerings, score instantly
Collect Demigod tokens - score during the scoring rounds
Place monuments on the map - score during scoring rounds.

There's 4 actions to chose from on your turn:
Movement - place the ultra-cute foot meeples (feeples?) on the board, trying to nab monuments and bonus 'booty' tiles
Buy stuff (Offerings, more feeples, extra moves)
Take a God tile (Score!) Each God provides a different bonus
Draw 3 cards - works like TtR I beleive

It's all quite simple, but comes together very well. There's some luck in many aspects of the game but that keeps it interesting and seems to make the game not overwhelming for casuals.

It has lovely production and a nice feel, And Feeples!

I usually like heavier games, but this is the game I'm going to be using as my gateway game in the future.

A light dice game from the desinger of Puerto Rico, that is easy to learn and plays quickly. Like the "theme" as well, even though it's totally pasted on.
