Here are some RPGs and RPG-ish games I'd like to try out with my regular board game group to demonstrate that RPGs have progressed since the 70s. Much as fashionable board games no longer resemble Monopoly, fashionable RPGs no longer resemble AD&D.

The idea here is to play through a game in 30 to 180 minutes, so that it's a similar time commitment to a board game rather than the longer duration of a traditional RPG session. This means no-prep games and / or pregenerated characters are the order of the day.

This is not really an RPG. It's more of a party game where you play through a Zork-esque adventure manually. We played Action Castle I at the Broadway lunchtime group and got through it in about 30 minutes, and everyone had a lot of fun.

This is a hardboiled detective game with screwy dames, chin music etc. It should be fun for a bit of scenery chewing with a small group, 2 or 3 players tops. I would provide pregenerated characters for this in order to save time.

How does this compare/contrast with Dirty Secrets which seems like it has a good answer to the typical spy/detective genre issue. (i.e. in the source material there is only one James Bond/Philip Marlowe so how do you accomodate three or four players?) Dirty Secrets goes for "one PC, multiple GMs".

I think I'd only play this with 1 GM and detective plus sidekick players to keep the feel right. For a larger count Dirty Secrets would probably be better.

What I like about A Dirty World is the use of the ORE system (from Reign / Wild Talents) in a thematic way. The detective has to get beaten down a bit in order to solve the crime.

Okay, maybe I'm showing off my genre ignorance, but I have to ask:

What the heck is "chin music"?

When a fellah is crackin' wise, you give him a little chin music until he cools off, see?

Another non-RPG. This is a drinking game of one-upping each other with tall tales while the other players pick nits with your elaborate structures of bullshit.

This is a slasher movie suspense RPG that borrows the suspense part from Jenga. If you knock over the tower, the slasher kills you. Don't go in there!

The RPG du jour amongst hip youngsters. It is basically a Cohen Bros / Tarantino thing where small time crooks get into big trouble and meet a comically tragic end.

I played this at AGE / Cancon last year and had a blast. Iain and I have also had many laughs playing it and doing silly voices.

I'm going to grab a PDF version of this soon, so let me know if you're keen to play it. Appears to be an ultra-violent early John Woo thing, with no prep, d6 dice pool, and a character sheet that fits on a toe tag.

A very very funny pastiche of Ghostbusters. Has a built-in game timer so you can choose how long you want to play for before you start.

A game in which university lecturers are possessed by Lovecraftian cockroach-gods. This encourages their petty squabbles over tenure to violent new heights.

Pulp fiction game in the style of newspaper serials like The Phantom and Mandrake. Mad scientists get punched, tigers get wrestled, and so forth. I'd provide pregens for this.
