I love coop games but have two problems with them: 1) 'Coop syndrome' where the most experienced/vocal players end up playing the game and 2) my gaming group doesn't love them as much as I do.

The hidden traitor mechanic solves both of these problems so, inspired by PeakHope's comprehensive list of purely cooperative games, I wanted a comprehensive list of them.

Please add in any I'm missing and try to add some basic info like number of players, number of traitors, etc. To make it very clear, this list is for cooperative games (meaning players versus the game) that include a hidden traitor that sides with the game.

This list is NOT for pure coop games (see PeakHope's list above for that) and is NOT for 'one versus many' games (like Fury of Dracula) where the opposition is publicly known.

My general benchmark for if a game belongs on this list is if the players are fighting the game as well as the traitors. Put another way, if you remove the traitor element and you still have a game (even an easy and boring one) it belongs. If you remove the traitor mechanic and it becomes impossible to lose and is no longer a game, it's not a coop game at heart.

The big unclear area are games (like Betrayal at House on the Hill) where it starts with no traitor until a certain point and it becomes publicly assigned. I'll allow these on the list but please list it in the info.

Another gray area are hidden team games (like BANG!) where roles are secret but since I don't view these as cooperative games (you're playing each other not the game system) I will be excluding them. This also excludes deduction games where the sole purpose of the game is to find the traitor (like Murder, She Wrote). Werewolf and its derivatives (this includes The Resistance) fall into this category as well; you can see The *Ultimate* Werewolf Geeklist for a list of those. Games with a hidden traitor or mole... contains many of the games that fall into this category as well.

New: Please see He's Lying...Trust Me: A Comprehensive List of Traitor-ish Games for a broader list of traitor games.

2 - 7 players.
0 - 2 Traitors

Although a "one versus the rest" game, the pack of werewolves may bite one or more hikers, who get tokens then. The status, if "infected" or not, is usually unknown until night falls and the tokens are turned face up. But if a hiker manages to check his infection status because of special items he finds in the wood and because of the special place, he may become a traitor even before night, since he knows, he is infected and is playing on the werewolf side.

This is a two-player only traitor game I am currently playtesting, that I have developed as part of the Games on Half a Checkerboard Series. I was drawn to doing a 2 player only traitor game due to my understanding there aren't any designed specifically for 2 players. I am of a preference as a designer now to want to explore new areas, rather than refine established concepts. In this game, both players may actually be traitors, or there may be none. It is essential that a 2 player game NOT always have a single traitor, because it is fairly obvious and stupid if this is the case.

In seeing this list, I see that there are some traitor games that accompany 2 players, so maybe this work isn't as needed now. Still I wanted to explore the concept.

I would recommend people check out Traitor Jenga variant under Jenga, if interested in traitor mechanic applied to a dexterity game.

I decided to add it here, because you can have a game where there are no traitors in the game at all. The traitor element is added to spice things up and test the ability of players to read and determine whether to trust or not.
