Do you remember
the 21st wargame played in September?
Flank attacks were crushing defenders
and your armor column led the way!

Yeah, it's that time ... SEPTEMBER!!! Time to rule the earth, wind, fire, land, sea, and air (and maybe even space).

What Boogie Wonderland are you conquering this month?

Once again, if you get a chance, cruise on over to this Geeklist and look through it. It is a list of war games that do not have a review. If you are willing and able, pick one out and get it on the table if need be, or write a review for it. Let's strengthen our war games in the data base!

Also, if you have not seen it, cruise over to the War Games FLGS Directory and add a game store.

resumes. Right now Grant's Western offensive has stalled in the face of a resurgent Confederacy. I have a fighting general -- now I need a few that will leave their egos at the door and serve as subordinates.

We must be at least halfway through the war and neither Lee nor Sherman has made an appearance.

finally finished.

We were playing AP09, Red Storm. This is a large 11-turn scenario with 25 Russian squads and 10 AFV's against 16 German squads and 9 AFV's. The Russian AFV's are superior and the Russians get OBA. The Russians have the upper hand but must clear the multi-hex buildings on 4 maps.

There is a key moment early in the scenario. The Germans have a single DC whose sole purpose appears to be to blow a bridge over a flooded river. If blown, the Russians have a much more difficult time clearing a village in the east-central part of the map. In fact, I would go so far as to say it is almost essential this happens. The 2nd key factor is whether to give the Russians their balancing adjustment. This allows the Russians to win by controlling 17 buildings instead of all 20. ROAR showed this as 18-12 in favor of the Germans so we played with the Russian balance. This one came right down to the last turn with the Russian taking 3 buildings to get to 18, so the balance made the difference. Without the balance, the Russians would have a really tough time winning should the key bridge be blown. The exception might be if the Russian OBA was highly effective, which wasn't the case in our game, as the 2nd red card came up after 2-3 turns.

All in all, a very fun scenario, and a much larger scenario than we usually play in our FtF games. If there was one thing I would do differently as the Germans, I would deploy every chance I got and then would spread those half squads out throughout the 20 buildings. I did do the initial deployment allowed, but I could have done more early on when I was out of sight of the Russians and didn't have to worry about losing concealment. Live and learn.

In our quest to play through all the scenarios of AP2, we now move on the AP10, Closing the Net, my first experience with PTO and the US Marines.

I spent 100 geek gold and all I got was this lousy overtext.
mbmbmbmbmb
Played twice today. Took a small squadron of Klingons up against a pair of Federation ships (total points value was pretty close, though, as the Klingons ships were smaller). Then swapped sides and played again. The Klingons got hammered both times. Rate of fire may be king when it comes to weapons, but a high shield rating is a trump card.

The Federation DN is a monster (all of them are, actually). Did you know that 4 overloaded photons that make their impact rolls will completely destroy a Klingon D7? Dreadnoughts are too powerful to use in small-scale actions - they have an impact out of proportion to their points value. In a full-scale fleet battle, however, they should mix with everything else just fine.

I like the Starfleet crossover products. They're not a replacement for Federation Commander or SFB, though. Starmada doesn't really scratch the same itch for me; it's too different.

My usual Vassal/Skype games partner abeniman
is a little more snowed under than usual. So he kindly sent down some of his solitaire collection so I can wargame with the sin of Onan.

So far
Zulus on the Ramparts was fun albeit a little too simple. Still yet to win. One to play collaboratively with the 7 year old.

Barbarossa Campaign has a little more guts to it but the rules make my eyes bleed. Layout people, layout your pages with some thought. Simple three column format is just crap, and some more boxes for definitions, examples, or designer notes wouldn't go astray, By way of example, set up for example speaks of Luftwaffe units, but what a Luftwaffe unit looks like is mentioned in passing pages on. I'm sure it will be fine, but a little more time on definitions etc, a la GMT, would be great.

But the one I'm looking forward to getting going is Ohama Beach. I'm not an overmuch fan of WW2 but this seems to offer a pile of challenge in a procedurally simple, tactically deep game. Or perhaps after Barbarossa I'm just delighted to see layout that had intelligent thought put into it. I hear rumour that Decision Games' quality control can be a bit iffy. This is the first game of theirs I've seen and it looks more than fine to me.

I was the Russians. Phil was the Finns. I setup my HIP units deep on my side of the board on level 1 locations over stairwells, and overlooking as much area as possible. In this game, Residual Fire was a better fighter than any of our units, breaking and eliminating one unit after another. The blazes spread like, well, fire. However, a serendipitous gust parted a two-hex-thick wall of smoke for the Finn's like magic right when they reached it, allowing a mad rush. On turns 5 and 6, the Russians simply stopped caring about killing; the game became a road race, with a couple of never-ending melees left behind. In the end, the Russians managed to get 1 more exit VP than the Finns.

Lars taught me Paths of Glory this year (we are in our second game) and Mike_O taught me Shifting Sands through two games. B2B seems to be a lot more like Shifting Sands, but between those two games, I'm ready to give this one another go to see all that it has to offer.

Played this on saturday.2 vs 2.Discussing moves together.
Set up with Kienmayer holding 7 units and the rest of the south looking strong, shifted all towards the center and tried to breakthrough there.
Didn't quite manage to bring on the French reserves and forgot that we needed to stop the French from taking a star, so in the end some small mistakes cost us the win.

Excellent game.

and I have only gotten one session done in each of the last two months.

September's session got us through the end of the 4-6 am turn of June 16th.

Von Trescow returned to the field after being stunned by a near miss an hour earlier. He returned in time for the last the of the Prussian light cavalry outside Fleurus to be rundown.

Meanwhile, nearby at Quatre Bras, the lead elements of the Imperial Guard have begun trading shots while Exelmann's cavalry harries the Dutch-Belgian right flank. Merlen's light cav reach the battlefield, but on the far side from the French cavalry and the Guard light cavalry will force them to go wide around the fighting if they want to relieve the DB left.

****

Our campaign is only into the second day and the action is hot and heavy with one major battle into its second day and a second brewing up quick. As the French player, I can all but see Napoleon standing on the field north of Fleurus near the banks of the Ligny river, watching the sun and tapping his foot impatiently.

I desperately need to bring the fight with the Prussians to a quick conclusion so that I can concentrate the army against the English. I am busy doing what I don't what to do - fight both armies at the same time. I almost wish it was on the same field, as that would hamper the Allies' ability to effectively deploy! almost...

At last! This arrived this morning at work and I'm now back home in the evening so this is hitting the table laugh

Strictly speaking I'm playing Empire: The Macedonian Punic Wars, 350-150BC but it's the deluxe version straight of the box as I need to play NOW, and the rules for the tactical game will have to wait for the weekend!

Results just in of the single-player game: Macedonia got off to a cracking start literally wiping Persia off the board going so far as to capture Egypt and India. The Persians eventually revolted and recaptured four provinces including India. The Carthaginians then kicked off mopping up the western Med and managed to reduce Rome to a single province and even invaded Greece, but Rome fought back to wipe Carthage off the map, but Carthage revolted and managed to end with two provinces. Rome ended up with the northern provinces including Iberia and a couple of provinces in Greece, although Macedonia still held six provinces including Egypt at the end of the game. The final scores were Rome 14, Macedonia 17, but Persia and Carthage tied with 19 points each (having both started with 12 point handicaps). All in all rattling good fun and I look forward to being able to fight out the battles in detail once I get in to the tactical game!
