With the imminent release of the new Opeth album it seems like a fine time to make a geeklist of some of our favorite songs by this truly amazing band. Add your favorites.

Yuck. A once great death metal band with progressive elements has completed the metamorphosis to a boring prog rock band. Orchid and My Arms Your Hearse were the most interesting albums IMO, but I don't think they will ever have that sound/style ever again.

This is true, but I like Heritage style too! My favourite albums by the way are "Damnation" and "Watershed" followed by "Blackwater Park".

Yeah, I don't really wholeheartedly dig this new sound either, but it's still definitely Opeth. The first 2 guitar riffs are actually pretty fun to play. Too bad that's pretty much it for the guitar player as far as this song goes (well there's one breaky passage still and the solo).

Dämn, I miss the growls, which we won't be hearing on this record.

Shame on me for not being able to resist the urge, but this time I'm going to buy an album only because it has "Opeth" on the cover. gulp

This album is so not landing on my musical alley.

Blackwater Park is by far my favorite album by the band to date. Picking one single track from the album is a difficult task for me as I feel you should just listen to the whole thing. Still in an effort to allow other Opeth fans to add items to this list I'll refrain from listing them all from this album and go with:

"The Leper Affinity" is great, probably my 2nd favorite on the album, but not representing the album with "The Drapery Falls" is an outright travesty!

I really enjoyed this album. Perhaps the refocusing from what was Damnation (a horrible album) and the apology that was Deliverance this album felt like a fresh start. I did very much enjoy this track.

Are you sure you don't have that backwards?

Deliverance is by far my favorite album of theirs, the only one that's a lock for my top 100 (Still Life has a shot at sneaking in there...). I realize that this puts me within a tiny majority of Opeth fans.

Nope I don't have that backwards even if release dates would make you think it as such. Both albums were recorded at the same time. Obviously Damnation was a huge departure from anything Opeth had done to date and I honestly feel they released Deliverance first and with that time separation in fear sales would suffer if they put them out together and people heard the atrocity that was Damanation. I just hated the prog-rock/jazz infusion they did on that album.

Alright, I get what you're saying now, though I have to take issue with your implication of Deliverance being an afterthought. Sounds as much Main Event as any other of their big albums, and I pretty much consider Damnation a lightweight castoff, equivalent to a collection of b-sides.

Just feels to me like Deliverance wasn't really an Opeth album. It's so much heavier than much of their foundational work. Like they released all their heaviest and all their least heavy material compiled onto their own albums. Given this all came on the heels of Blackwater Park it was just stunning to me that these albums saw the light of day. Deliverance is a good album to my ears but not great.

I don't think `Deliverance´ is particularly heavy. I think `My Arms, Your Hearse´ is in fact heavier album. Some pretty crushing riffage (and tricky to play, too) on that album.

Though, I agree that it's not anywhere near best Opeth album.

Still Life is such a great album… I particularly enjoy The Moor and its subtle balance of sadness and anger, of clean guitar and growls… with still some sort of genuine imperfection, a tint of 90s swedish sound that makes it both worse and better at the same time.
I love Orchid & Morningrise as I love Blackwater Park & Deliverance/Damnation, but Still Life has my heart pounding a little harder.

Unfortunately there are no games that I could find involving curtains or drapery.

Nothing really needs to be said about this track, but I appreciate thoia leaving it for us to add.

I was just getting back into metal when my brother gave me this to listen to shortly after this record came out. I didn't totally get it at the time, but it stuck in my head. A couple years later I asked to borrow it again, and there you go.

When can I take you from this place?
When is the word but a sigh?
When is death our lone beholder?
When do we walk the final steps?
When can we scream instead of whisper?
When is the new beginning,
the end of this sad MADRIGAL.

A combination of extreme heavy and calm melodies.

I have been a HUGE fan of Opeth since the release of Morningrise. I traveled to Miluwaulkee to see there first American show at Metalfest (it was terrible, even Opeth agrees)

I met the entire band on the Still Life tour in Minneapolis. They were touring with Nevermore and just hung out in the bar afterwards. Really cool guys.

I am going to see them in October in Denver for my 11th show.

Went to the show. Since this tour was supposed to highlight the lighter side of things and I knew that going it I thought it was great. I know some folks were disappointed because the wanted the "heavy" stuff. But honestly they played a really heavy show it doesn't have to be death growls to be heavy.

I would say in the top 3 shows that I have seen them.

awesome video, thanks for posting. Opening with a new song pretty cool. I love that these guys do what they want to do and stand by it. Fans either embrace what they are doing. Fans either come along the ride with them or not and it seems cool with them. I like the new stuff, very much giving me a heavier space-rock/Pink Floyd feel and I love that.

Again great video thanks for posting.
