As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you, now remain in my love. You did not choose me, but I chose you, and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit, fruit that will last. -- Jesus Christ
This is the traditional weekly thrift and bargain finds list.
These lists may start empty but as always: add your items.
Put in what you consider a bargain, tell us how much you paid and the place you got it from. Bargains can be thrift store finds or any second-hand purchases or discounted boardgames bought new. Don't forget to add your encounters with the Thrift Store Irritant Squad™ and any other embellishments in order to make it even more interesting.
Our GeekGuild: Welcome to The Ancient and Loyal Order of Thrifters. Enter the halls of thriftdom at your own risk. Please do mind the stacks of prized games, do not mention the musty smell and try not to sneeze. Make sure to bow before our king: Belial I.
The Order's Anthem: Sing along with our good old thrifty theme song...
I took my daughter to a birthday party yesterday, and as the children are playing I am slowly inviting the adults to my gaming group. Lots are interested, but the host, who has been meaning to come suddenly leaves and comes back with this game and gives it to me, says he has had it for years, and has never played it. I tell him its worth money and is a great game, he says hes happy to give it to someone who can appreciate it.
$1.48 America's Thrift missing 1 pawn. My son chose this one and the little sister promptly beat us when we played it at home. I swear she's so lucky; I think she must be part leprechaun with that St. Patrick's Day birthday.
$2.48 America's Thrift. Missing pink guy, 1 card, 3 red marbles, and 1 plastic token. It had some extras of the blue and orange guys though. I'm torn between keeping this because it looks fun or ebaying it and using the profits to buy some of the games on my want list.
What's that large box down in the corner of the lowest game shelf of my local GW? Why it's Heroscape. So nice of you to FINALLY show up in my neck of the woods pally. How many sets have appeared on this list for the past year? How deep had my depression become as I congratulated/thumbed all those lucky souls? Well now...all that negativity ends right here and right now. I grab the box and check the price. $19.99. You've got to be kidding me, right? Was this some joke of the thrifting gods? I look at the box and it's not in the best of shape and smells vaguely of cigarette smoke. I look inside and it does have some minis, but they're scattered everywhere. I close it up and notice the outside of the box has the original price sticker of $41. So that's what doomed me. As I'm spiraling down deeper into depression, I realize it's half price day. Still...$9.99 is way, way beyond what I'd normally spend on a single item. I stand there for another 10 minutes arguing with myself, before I finally decide to take it home. I had to... I tell myself as I check out. Get it home and it's not complete (missing the dragon, and 5 minis), and smells like a two pack a day user owned this (feel sorry for any kids), but I've finally broken through. At least that's what I keep telling myself.
The thrift gods were pleased with my earlier decision (and probably laughing at me as well) because at my next GW stop was another set (1st ed. with sparkly water tiles). Pristine with all the goodies bagged and priced at $2.99. I just smiled and shook my head. Their were even a few additional figures tossed in. I just have to figure out where/what set they came from.
MTG, I have passed up cards a few times before, I bit on this one. 4 bags of 500 cards each. $16 total for 2,000 cards at VV. All I know about them is that silver and gold symbols are more rare than black...
I picked up my wife from the train station on the weekend and convinced her to come with me to a Value Village nearby where I have had some luck in the past. Last year when my wife was with me we found Dune at the same store so I figure maybe she can bring me some luck again.
I wasn't seeing anything but my wife picked this up for $3.99. The box was in great shape but unfortunately it is missing some of the tiles.
