Oh yeah! In life sometimes you have to hold firmly, almost fervently to things - whether it's a sports team you support, your favourite old comfy chair or even your tea or coffee mug.

Then there are things that you should be happy to let go of, to float whimsically upon the breeze of variety, new discovery and....wait for it....

CHANGE.

Eeep.

Anyway, over the years my wife and I have had our favourite games that we've played a lot and then over more years those games have been replaces in our hearts by other games. The earlier games are then consigned to the shelves to be rarely played again. Such is life I guess. Here are some of those games and please feel free to add your own.

We used to play Lost Cities as our go-to light card push-your-luck/do-I-feel-lucky? game. As was always said it's the perfect couple game, whatever that means. Play cards to the five colour piles to score points but of course you can only play higher cards on top of each card you've just played, leading to the conundrum of whether you hold out for more lower cards or just start skipping cards to get the high scoring cards down before the deck runs out.

However, for us this was replaced by.......

Battle Line!
You're still having to decide on which cards to play (to play different "formations" to the battle) but we just love it more as there is also the added decision of where along your battle line to play your formations as if your opponent wins three sections in a row then they win automatically.

It's more direct in conflict than Lost Cities as your result really depends on what your opponent is playing, while in Lost Cities you're trying to get a good score for yourself and then trying to see if you can affect your player's score.

We played San Juan quite a lot over the years. I definitely preferred it to Puerto Rico and really liked the way that the cards fulfilled different roles depending on how you played them (whether as buildings, or crops or money). That was cool. It's a great game still but for that slightly longer card hit we briefly moved to...

Current BGG favourite Glory to Rome.
The art doesn't bother me that much and we liked the way you played cards around your player mat. Again the cards are used differently, enabling them to be either buildings, building materials, money, points or people who offer you different powers.

Yeah we briefly enjoyed it but only until...

Young Chad's newer game Innovation! It kept the player mat that you slid cards under and we really like this right now. Glory to Rome hasn't seen another play since we got this. Finding the combinations between different cards and the sense of getting stronger and the actions getting more interesting as the game progresses really makes this game more of an adventure than it at first seems.
Also it's got enough cards that allow you to screw your opponent, in fact it's really a lot about interaction and you can't just follow your own plan because 9 times out of 10, your opponent(s) will screw you over.

Now we are playing Pandemic. It seems like it almost has the same feel of working together to achieve the win, but is a bit more complex and involved. We only started this a week or so ago, so it will most likely be the 'go to' game for another month or two... then we'll probably get the expansion.

we discovered dominant species. There are random card/tile draws, but NO hidden information once the turn is set up. Yes, some of the dominance cards can be VERY powerful, but fight for 'em and make them pay for taking domination early-that means you can place a pawn somewhere they can't, etc. I love the interplay of dominance via element control vs. numerical superiority for scoring. Beautiful, beautiful game. And if everyone knows how to play, a 4-5 player game is doable in under 3 hours. Seriously.

We used to play Monopoly. A lot. For long periods of time. It was often tedious but there were quite a few things we enjoyed about it. This is obvious, because we kept going back for more. I think the thrill of becoming owners of areas of the board, the negotiations and backstabbing that were commonplace, and the fact that we were all able to handle big sums of money were some of the most appealing factors. Then, on a whim, my girlfriend bought me Carcassonne...

I've never played this specific game, but it's holding the place of all of the games I've discovered through this site. I still have monopoly (4 versions at my parents' house!) but I don't know if I'll ever play it again unless there is nothing else available and a child wants to play it with me - then I will do so happily.

But now I play loads of games that give me much more quantifiable and complete satisfaction without so much acceptance of things that aren't really as good as they could be.
