I have maintained a Top 100 Games list since 2009. I used to just track it in and Excel spreadsheet and share it on GoogleDocs, but decided that a geeklist would be a lot more fun.

I've come to the conclusion that it makes most sense to put together my new Top 100 right on the cusp of SPIEL each year, as afterwards I'm too busy trying all the new hotness.

This year I abandoned my old system of generating my Top 100 Games in favor of the method Tom Vasel uses for his own list. I.e. I printed out cards for each game I considered a potential candidate, shuffled them together, pulled one at random and compared all the other games to it putting better games on its left and worse game on its right. Then I repeated the process with both the better and worse games until I had my list completed. Once any given stack was around 8 or so cards I would manually sort them and continue with another stack. It was a fun process and I hope someone enjoys seeing my results.

But it looks like the new fantasy flight version with all it's extra cards and pieces are ruining the original games reputation. Just check out the comments after I posted Condottiere on a geek list recently: Condottiere

There, now I added the correct cover, well the one of the edition I love and treasure anyhow. You're correct that some of the changes to gameplay in the FFG Silver Line version where perhaps not so thought out. It would've been nice if they still had the original cards, with an extra deck of new cards for those that want to experiment with the new rules. I also love how in the old game you could keep fighting for already capture city states, yeah sure, it could prolong the game, but it sure was fun!

Terrific multi-player card game that scales really well. In fact the more players you have the better it is IMO.

Here's another classic title that surprised me by how highly I ranked it using my new method of ranking. I have always had a soft spot for A&A and would gladly get out a case of beer and challenge a buddy to an evening of WWII-themed world conquest. However the competition from newer hotter titles had made me sort of forget about, plus how it's stored in my collection makes it easy to overlook (it's in a row of extra cabinets on top of the closets housing the rest of my games).

You should try one of the newer editions. Ie. Axis & Allies 1942 (second edition). There have been some subtle but rather important improvements since the original. Mainly the map of the Eastern front has been redrawn for a much more interesting campaign, and the unit prices have been adjusted for better balance. I don't think you need to be an über dedicated A&A fanboy to appreciate the changes.

Yeah as it stands I haven't played this game in years now, it ranks up here for nostalgical reasons, but I'd love to try one of the newer editions if opportunity were to present itself.

This game seems to draw a lot of nostalgia. It is an advantage and disadvantage at the same time: It gets a lot more attention because of it, but on the other hand it also gets bashed because of the design problems with the ancient original. Many people who comment on the game do so based on 15 years old experiences and forget that the game has been revised (and improved IMO) several times since then.

On the other hand, the revised editions usually don't state such, and the older editions are what floods the secondhand market. People are still playing the 1985 rulebooks... and suffering for it.

Not sure about Yokiboy, but in our group, we tried the "normal" rules with 4 players, and the cooperative bidding with 5-6 players. The normal rules with 6 really tended to shut out any given player from the round.

With the cooperative bidding in a large group, we really liked the sense of "yeah... I get get on that too!" Even more clever... waiting to see how the table responds and then making a late supporting bid to swing the group's travel another way.

Very, very interactive game.

No, we've just used the regular bidding rules so far. I've only played it with 5 and 6 players, but it works well as is. We discussed trying them, when as Greg pointed out, a few times someone didn't even have a chance to bid just because he was late in the turn order. The game's definitely fun just as is though.

This is my second highest ranked dexterity game (I count Loopin' Louie as an action game). A la carte while hardly a world-beater is a very enjoyable family game. Flipping crepes in those little frying pans and trying to get just the right amount of the various seasonings make for a very enjoyable game. This game is also helped by both the Dessert and Spielbox expansions, especially the former and its menu cards.

Jamaica is a great production, the game box looks like a pirate's treasure chest and when you open it there's the illusion of it being filled with gold as the back of the board is printed with tons of gleaming gold coins. This box also goes to show that you cannot go wrong with GameWorks in general, they definitely produce some of the best box inserts bar none. This one is no exception. However, the base game is greatly enhanced by the free expansion called Extra Treasures and it is the two in combo that I rank here.

For some reason the 4-player version of this game has just never failed to impress the people I introduce it to and it is a game that holds up to repeated play. I'm including Blokus Duo in this ranking, as I have clearly marked up the smaller 2-player 2-colors only board on my larger Blokus board.

Yeah everyone should do that. The Blokus Duo version of playing just a single color in 2-player games is vastly superior to playing two colors each IMO.

Burg Appenzell (or Château Roquefort) surprises me even now as I enter it on this list, but there's something about this children's game that I really enjoy and once again it is much helped by its two expansions. First you should definitely get Cheesy Gonzola, but if you can be sure to nab a copy of the free promo called Burg Appenzell Erweiterung: Völlig mausgeflippt. The former contains a box insert that works almost as an extension to the main game, making it possible to store the base game ready for play, while the latter contains just two double-sided tiles that manage to add a whole other level to the game. Its the complete package that I rank at #85.

How so? I don't really see the two games as being too comparable.

Summoner Wars is tactical battle with dice on a grid.
Warhammer Invasion is a CCG-style card game.

Thematically they feel similar, that is they both depict fantasy battles. Plus while Warhammer: Invasion lacks a grid map and dice, it does feel a lot more like a tactical wargame of sorts than most CCGs. You might at least want to try it Lasse.

Samurai won me over with pure looks, but then backed it up with very enjoyable abstract-like gameplay. That is what the game feels like, an abstract with a veneer of a feudal Japanese theme put on top of it, but as good as the gameplay is and as pretty as the components are you just don't have the will to argue about it and instead settle in to enjoy it.

Okay, I fell in love with Ice Flow at SPIEL '09, have played it very little since but still like it a lot and it has been included on each of my Top 100 lists. It is a racing game across the Bering Straits. The components are great looking and functional, and the game plays much like a good abstract game. It is highly competitive and you can easily screw with the other players.

Wow, Giro Galoppo remained in my Top 100 while Ave Caesar dropped out. Well, this game is great! It looks like a cute little children's game about equestrian races, but is underneath its cute looks a vicious racing game where you do your best to mess up for the other riders.

I find Le Havre very enjoyable and not nearly as stress-inducing as Agricola for instance, however I also greatly prefer the latter to the former.

I realize that I am in the minority here, but this one doesn't do it for me. I mean, I don't think it is a bad game and I can see how others would see its appeal, but I've played it a few times and just didn't care for it.

Alright, confession time. I'm a recovered Magic addict. Now I only play it on the PC or console, but would have a hard time resisting temptation should my friends pick it up. It was one of the first games that my wife and I played together.

I know how you feel zombie I had to quit four years ago when we got our first child... but I still have the urge to read just a little about it.. It simply required too much effort/time to stay updated with the latest meta game developments - and I was playing Vintage mind you! Now, I think BGG is taking nearly as much time as MTG research did. whistle

I sold my Power back then, but haven't gotten around to selling the duals etc. which I really ought to do. They haven't been used since, but luckily they went up in prices and the power lost a little value due to Legacy becoming hotter.

Edit: What type of MTG do you play on the PC?

I gave up my Magic cards when I moved back to Sweden from the US. I gave them to a friend to help me sell and we were going to split the proceeds, but he screwed me over instead. I still my miss old black and white deck and my old dual lands.

Mainly Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 and Magic: The Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers (2009), but I also used to play a bunch of fan-made Magic software that actually allowed for real deck building and access to all cards in the game.

If you buy two of the pre-constructed decks and maybe a couple of boosters and don't buy anything more, Magic is a fun and cheap two-player game.

Extremely addictive. Have you given any thoughts toward constructing a Cube and limiting yourself to drafting from that? Keeps costs manageable while providing an out-of-box way to play with others who don't need their own collection.

Yes I have Matt, but right now I will likely not invest in any Magic cards unless at least one of my gaming buddies (or perhaps some new friends) first show an interest in the game. My personality lends itself to jumping in with both feet first and going hog wild on things I enjoy. I would love to play it regularly though.

If it were not for the health issues which restrict me from attending Friday night magic events, that would be something I'd enjoy immensely.

FITS is most likely in my Top 100 for the last time, but don't take that to mean that it's not a very good game. FITS is quite good and works very well with everything from kids to casual gamers to your gaming buddies. If someone has played Tetris (which is highly likely) then this game is quick to impress.

Fun game that works best with peers and not as well as a mixed-age family game. I've played it mostly with my gaming buddies and we always have a great time playing it.

My only print-and-play game on the Top 100. This is a brilliant Yahtzee variant with ten different events of massive dice chucking. It plays quickly and is a ton of fun. Be sure to download the great score sheets in the files section as the can then easily be laminated and used over and over for repeated play.

Glory in the Arena is a Roman gladiatorial miniatures combat game that works very well as a filler for miniatures fans. A single 1-on-1 combat plays from start to finish easily in 10 minutes. Given that the game's free what are you waiting for?

Phew, sorry about the few hickups, after publishing the list I realized that I had messed up the list a bit by excluding a couple of early entries, but that has now been fixed.

That was a fantastic list, I've seen some games that I must look further into. A mate of mine actually picked up a copy of The Boss from a recent visit to Europe so I'll get to play it soon. I've been keen to play it ever since your review.

Awesome list Yoki. I own The Boss because of you.

Looking forward for the next hidden gem you find at Essen this year... so that I can overpay shipping again

Also glad to see Conflict of Heroes: Storms of Steel! Kursk 1943 so far up. That game is new to me recently. What a ton of game that is!

Thanks Joel. I'm also looking forward to what kind of surprises I can find at SPIEL. I agree that there's a lot to Conflict of Heroes, I would just like to play it more.
