The 'list' is a work in progress -- it is my goal that every single game that is freely available on the internet will be listed here. A lofty goal, to be sure, but a noble one....

Since there are literally hundreds of free games available on the internet, I've decided to break the list into alphabetical chunks.

The format I'm using is pretty simple -- name, designer, publisher, status (free, shareware, demo, etc.), a short summary, and the website where it is available.

All summaries are either taken directly from the designer's/publisher's website, from the rules, or from the BGG entry. Any references to 'me' or 'I' refer to the designer, not yours truly...

Feel free to add to the list, but please only add games that have been released to the public by their designer or publisher -- don't add games that could be made for free using details and rules found on the internet but are actually commercially-published games. Also, please don't add public domain games such as chess, backgammon, poker, etc -- this would make the list unwieldy, to say the least.

Also, if you have played any of these games, please leave your comments.

A version of this list is also available at:

This is the dice-version of a card game I designed a couple years ago. You're hunting big game animals on the North American continent 12,000 years ago. Uses 10 dice, plays quick, and has a solo option.

Cold War Naval Battles
Designers: Alan Emrich & Dan Verssen
Art: Rodger B. MacGowan

Cold War Naval Battles was originally published as Modern Naval Battles, a series of three boxed card games for two to six players based on (then) present day sea power with an emphasis on action. It was introduced in the late 1980s by 3W, Inc. of Cambria, California.

The rights to the game’s design have long since reverted back to designer Dan Verssen, and Rodger B. MacGowan has always retained the rights to the graphic design. Meanwhile, Alan Emrich, who did the development work and codesigned the series, continued to receive email from its many fans asking if copies could still be obtained (even though it was long out of print).

In their quest for good gaming karma, Dan, Rodger, and Alan agreed that they would re-release the game, renamed (more accurately) Cold War Naval Battles, as a free download for personal use only (i.e., not for resale) on the internet. It is their hope that the fans of this wonderful game series will continue to find hours of enjoyment in it well into the future.

Blam!
Designer: Jon Eargle

Looking for someone to shove? Strategize in Blam! with two to four elbow-room seekers.

Object: To push high-scoring pieces off the board and add them to your treasure chest.

You Need:

* A chessboard.
* One Icehouse stash for each player. No stash may have the same color as another stash.

On your turn, place a piece from your stash in a vacant space on the board. If there are any pieces in adjacent spaces (including diagonals), move them one space directly away from the piece you placed. You’ve just slammed a major impact onto the board, and it scattered nearby pieces. If a moving piece attempts to enter an occupied space, allow it to, and push the occupying piece into the space beyond; this may cause entire rows of pieces to move.

If a piece attempts to leave the board, place it in your treasure chest—unless it’s your color. If it’s your color, put it in your stash.

Once all pieces have been relocated, your turn ends. Play passes to the left.

Winning: Each piece has a point value equal to the number of pips on it (1, 2, or 3). Tally the points in your treasure chest and your stash. If your score is the highest, you win.

Bloody Mary: Further Intrigue in the Tudor Court
Designer: Garry Stevens

In this game you get to relive the politics of middle Tudor England as you strive to secure your candidate for the Throne... and keep your own head.

The game starts at the coronation of Henry VIII's son Edward. It follows the history of mid-Tudor England for a further 25 years. You must plot to place your favoured candidate on the throne. You play the part of a faction of courtiers trying to preserve your power and influence. The game is solidly based in history (well, as solidly as I can make it). It is meant to be educational as well as entertaining.

I think that also I have reaches to the end with my fight to develop smaller and smaller variant. I can't imagine a boardgame with one square and after that there is no more any board! :-)

Barbarian Prince
Designer: Arnold Hendrick
Publisher: Reaper Miniatures
Free (limited permission)

Evil events have overtaken the Northlands. You -- Cal Arath, Barbarian Prince -- are in hiding and the usurper who killed your father, the Old King, now sits on his throne. Now you must flee south and raise enough gold by adventuring to equip an army with which to regain your rightful heritage. The way will not be easy, for the men of the south are strange, and some are schooled in the black mysteries. The passes are guarded by monsters, it is said, and in the ruined cities lurk foul things never born of this earth. But you have your stubborn Northland will and your great sword -- and woe to anyone or anything which stands between you and your quest . . .

BARBARIAN PRINCE is a solitaire game of heroic adventure in a forgotten age of barbarism and sorcery. No opponent is necessary as the Event Booklet takes you through a pre-programmed sequence of encounters which is different each time you play the game. For each event, you, as the Barbarian Prince Cal Arath, must make the decisions which will make your quest successful -- or may cost you your life.

BARBARIAN PRINCE is a new concept in Adventure Gaming. No rules reading is required; the programmed event sequence lets you begin play as soon as you open the box.

Items included for download are:

* Complete Rules Set

* Standard Tank Models, Dice and Datasheets

The only item not included is the game table. For the photos we used a normal 4' x 4' gaming table covered by a black sheet but any flat surface will work. We normally use a black cloth with a white grid but it did not display well on the digital camera.

From the BGG entry:

Andantino is a game invented by the inventor of Trax. Players take turns placing hexagonal tiles in each of two colors. A player wins by surrounding at least one of the opponent's tiles with tiles of ones own color. Alternatively one can win by making a line of five hexagons of your own color.

Since the tiles placed are never moved, this game can alternatively be played on hexagonal paper with the players using pens of two colors.

Chunky Fighters won second place in the dice game design contest held here on BGG.

Build a small band of warriors out of body part and weapon dice and fight 'em to the death! As your fighters health worsens, so does their appearance. Use disarming, blocking, first aid, and called shots to cripple, decapitate, and totally destroy all of your opponent's fighters.

Popular for its custom dice and appealing art, the game can be played in as little as five minutes, with most games coming in under twenty minutes. The first expansion was released in June, and new content is always in the works.

CromoGnomo is a game for four players, playing in two teams of two players each, that deals with four painter gnomes.

Each gnome/player begins the game with the same hand of twelve "colour" cards. During his turn, each player either plays in the bucket one of his card, or passes. The colours in the bucket blend to form other colours: at the end of each round, one of the team may score points if the resulting colour is one of his favourites.

An elegant and fun card game created during the event "Create a Game from Scratch" (Gradara Ludens 2003)

Battle for Moscow is a historical wargame of the German Army's struggle to defeat the Soviet Army and capture Moscow in 1941. It is played on a map of the territory where the battle was fought, and it uses playing pieces which represent the actual military units (German corps and Soviet armies) from the battle. Cronberg
Designers: Tobias Goslar, Roland Goslar
Publisher: Kronberger Spiele
Free/Commercial

Cronberg is a fast and easy tile placement game for 2 to 4 players, ages 8 and up.

Cronberg & Bonobo Beach are in essence the same games. Only the theme and the graphics are different.

The city has just burned to the ground, leaving only the city wall and castle behind. A few city guards patrol a few individual streets. The object of the game is, during the reconstruction of the city, to control the most valuable intersections with your own family and eventually become Mayor of the newly rebuilt city.

During a turn, a player either places a city tile (with varying plus- and minus-values) or places a pawn onto an intersection, similar to the mechanics in Auf Heller und Pfennig or Isis und Osiris. New in this game are the triangular tiles on the city plan, which have varying effects that only count when buildings are properly placed around them: doubling, banishment or switching signs. The triangles generate placement restrictions which in turn lead to forced placements, in this way creating a tactical game regardless of the number of players.

There are two different ways of scoring. Pawns that sit on intersections that are completely built up with tiles give immediately points and then can be placed anew. Pawns on incomplete intersections don't give points but at the end of the game. The scores are determined by the values of the buildings and the triangle tile modifications. Highest score wins.

The rules are two pages long; the game is explained in two minutes and set up in two seconds. The game lasts 10 to 20 minutes.

The Artifact
Designers: Roberto Corbelli, Alessandro Mongelli
Publisher: daVinci Games

The Artifact takes us in a fantasy world far away, where humans, magical and evil creatures can be easily found walking around, just as in any Tolken-inspired game. Players take up the role of one of these heroes (a Human, a Dwarf, an Elf and a Hobbit, indeed) and must recover their weapon, which is proved to be the only mean to destroy a powerful Artifact that is trying to put under its control the whole world. The path to the Mountain of Fate, the place where the Artifact is giving out its will, is full of dangerous creatures such as Trolls, Orcs and the mighty Black Knight. During his turn, the player rolls two different coloured six-sided dice, thus determining both his hero movement and which of the evil character will be moved by the player sitting to his right. You got it: players are trying both to advantage their heroes and to stop the other players' ones at the same time. And if it's not your lucky day, you may even change the outcome you have rolled, but are you ready to pay its price, giving your opponents a free move? The game gets even more interesting because each evil character has its own special ability, and the map represents different types of terrains: each heroes has a favoured type of terrain (e.g. woods for the Elf) where he can peacefully rest and plan his next moves. Last but not least, there is also the possibility of casting a powerful spell and bend evil characters' wills to yours...

Caravansérail
Designer: Bruno Faidutti
Free

The oriental desert, its mysterious palaces, its proud nomadic warriors, its long and slow caravans...

A game of exchange and negotiation for 6 or 8 players.

Each player is a sheikh ruling a desert kingdom. He sends his caravans to oases and caravanserais to exchange his wares with the other sheikhs, and controls a group looters attacking opposers' caravans. The winner is the first to get all the goods listed on the treasure card that he picked at the start of the game.

Dead Slug is a dice game with free rules available at http://www.deadantgames.com/dead_slug.htm.

Nothing to print except the rules, so maybe not technically print and play.

Does the "master site" still exist? I get a "you are forbidden, yada, yada, yada, when I attempt to go to it.
