Authors, Beauties, Crowd and so on: Lacxox's third annual Essen photo-filled diary geeklist

Very short introduction as no one reads longer ones:
This is my third Essen photo diary. #1: Authors, Beauties, Crowd, Dungeons, Euros, Freebies - and Games! A first timer's Essen Spiel 09 Photo-filled Diary #2: Authors? (No.) Beauties? (Yes.) Crowd? (Not really.) Dungeons? (No.) Euros, Freebies and Games! My Essen Spiel '10 Experiences (without leaving Hungary) Just as usual, I try to tell everything in chronological order. So don't expect a geeklist with a strong structure. Also you can click on any of the pics to see them in a bigger version. Have fun!

At around this time I had another meeting at the 4a hall
- I got Einauge sei wachsam! from
Marcel Sagel
Netherlands Groningen
- and I sold Meuterer to
Andreas Olsson
Sweden Malmö Skåne
.

Then I met
Daniel Danzer
Germany Stuttgart southwest
there. Of course I made my worst pic of the fair about the guy who organizes photo contests at BGG... It is totally out of focus and wrong colors So I present it only in a small form:
We talked a bit while he was trying to find Kris Verbeeck (Kris, I hope it's not a problem that I give your phone number to him). It was nice to meet him and also to take a little break during this busy day.

Then I moved forward. A nice lady gave me a postcard and was ready to explain the board game prototype that was presented at their booth.
It was a really good-looking, otherwise more or less standard race game
where players played cards from their hand and who played the highest card moved 2 steps, the second highest moved 1 steps. The race consisted of some sections and the section winners won some special cards that had an effect on the game play (hindering others, advantages for the player).
She pointed at the designers of the game, then waved good-bye.
(Oh, and she also took a photo of me. I guess the only pic about me in Essen. )

Another game, Domory looked really good but actually it wasn't that more much than a set of nice tiles that you could play dominoes and Memory with (so I guess you can understand the name now).

I've always found the concept of this game intriguing. I don't know if it's a good game or only a good idea, though. I should try it one day...

Then I saw a game that has a webpage ( www.mortebrume.fr ) and seems to be an rpg or CCG but I just can't find it in the database. The guy at the presentation seemed to be enjoying it though.

I went to the courtyard between the halls to eat some sandwiches. I ate my lunch next to a big pile of Hawaii boxes...

So when I went back to the halls I watched people playing Hawaii. I didn't even try to play; there's (almost) no chance you can find free tables on Friday afternoon. The game seemed to be good though; it's definitely one that I'd like to try soon.

At the Ravensburger booth there were several players playing Casa Grande, a game I'd like to try (although it looks too much like the designer is stuck at the same mechanism - going around a small rectangular grid and taking actions in the corresponding rows or columns).

Another Ravensburger presentation was a mega-sized FITS "board"...

As there aren't enough chairs/seats at the fair (well, there are lots of them but they are occupied by those fortunate enough to be playing) there are always lots of people sitting on the stairs of the restaurant.
I was waiting there as well...

...but only because one of the greatest old masters of Eurogames was talking in front of the stairs. I hoped I can ask him if I can take a photo of him but that talk seemed to never end. So I moved close to the conversation, found eye contact and silently asked him if I can take a photograph. He nodded so here you are.

I also saw a couple in costumes there; they were really happy to be photographed.

I wanted to buy a game for my 3-year-old son as well - so I bought an used copy of The Little Orchard. It looked nice.
(My daughter got a nice bracelet with pink and purple flowers. She is 1 year old but she already prefers nice clothes and accessories.)
(and my son also got a jigsaw puzzle freebie... )

I watched the giant version of this inventive-looking new word game for some time.

I met another cosplaying advertisement couple then. People were posing with them.

I was once again at the Queen Games booth.
Right then Matthias Cramer was playtesting the Lancaster expansion prototype.

Others were playing Castelli...

...and Sparta and of course Kingdom Builder - but a day later I had to realise I didn't take any photos of these when I was there, watching how they were played.

I spent quite a long time at the Treefrog booth.
I was watching people play Discworld - Ankh-Morpork;
also drooled at the special edition (price: 120 euros)

And waited at an empty table. There were about 7 o 8 tables there and Ankh-Morpork was played at each but one. The last table seemed to be reserved for Old Men of the Forest, a simple card game created for charity reasons. It looks nice, it has orangutans in it, it can be fine - but nobody wanted to join the game (not even the game helpers). So I decided 10 Euros for a card game that I don't even know is too much... so I didn't buy it.
