Very short introduction as no one reads longer ones:
This is my third Essen photo diary.
#1: Authors, Beauties, Crowd, Dungeons, Euros, Freebies - and Games! A first timer's Essen Spiel 09 Photo-filled Diary
#2: Authors? (No.) Beauties? (Yes.) Crowd? (Not really.) Dungeons? (No.) Euros, Freebies and Games! My Essen Spiel '10 Experiences (without leaving Hungary)

Just as usual, I try to tell everything in chronological order. So don't expect a geeklist with a strong structure.
Also you can click on any of the pics to see them in a bigger version.
Have fun!

It was 3 p.m.
I remembered Susan McKinley Ross was supposed to be at the Qwirkle booth so I went there. There was a woman sitting there. She asked something I didn't understand but it sounded like she was asking me if I want to take a copy of the game with me to a table for playing.
Not being sure what she asked I pointed at the little paper on the desk: "Qwirkle author Susan McKinley Ross signing at 3.00 p.m."
She pointed at herself. We both smiled.

I told her I didn't have the game with me but I own and like it. She said she can sign a bag for me, I said thank you.

I told her how my mother-in-law also wants to get a copy for herself and why I think this means the Spiel des Jahres award was deserved.
Also, out of curiosity, I asked her if she knows about the new Knizia game Big Five that is just too much like Qwirkle. I was especially interested in her opinion as I do think Qwirkle owes some features to Knizia (and Ingenious) so I just wanted to hear what she thinks about 'stealing back'.
"Yes, I have heard about it", she said. "But that's still a really different game."
"To me it seems like Knizia liked Qwirkle enough so he wanted to tinker with the idea to create something new out of the same base", I said.
"I agree. I'm looking forward to buy and try Big Five soon", she replied.

She is a kind person.

Some minutes before leaving the fair I realised I made a big mistake. I wanted to learn Reiner Knizia's take on Take it Easy! and that game is not Take it to the Limit! (the game I bought) but Take it Higher! (the game I didn't buy). So what could I do? I rushed back to the Burley Games booth with the copy of Take it to the Limit! I bought in the morning. They said no problem - they exchanged the two games. Great!

So we learned and played Last Will.
This game is special in a way - your aim is not collecting money and/or victory points but losing your money

as the one who spends their money the fastest wins the game (according to a funny last will). So you are buying real estates and devaluate them before selling; you invite guests that want your money, organize events - like balls - etc.

Okay, the theme is different but actually this is once again a game where you collect cards (characters and buildings) to your display just to be able to activate and combine them.

While the theme is implemented well it could still be rather easily converted and re-themed to a game where your are collecting money and/or victory points (in this case you would get money all the time when you spend money right now).

I still didn't feel the game is that much different from the other Eurogames of the past years. At the same time it has some interesting rythm and dynamics so in the end it's rather enjoyable (the production qualities also help this, although the guest markers could be more different from each other).

I'd say it's superior to the other game by Suchy I know (and like), Shipyard.

I was happy to see my wife and children again.

And on Sunday we already played games... When the kids were sleeping we played with my wife - we played games that I knew she would like. First we played Ticket to Ride Map Collection: Volume 1 – Team Asia & Legendary Asia as she loves the TtR series. She rather enjoyed this one (Legendary Asia) as well; I think the mountain routes add some interesting touch to the game.

Then we played Big Five as recently she's been enjoying Qwirkle. Of course the placement rules are the same but I can agree it's a different game and not only because it's a lot shorter - you can play it in 15-20 minutes. It feels more like a card game (well it is a card game) and also the emphasis and dynamic of the game is really different. In Qwirkle you don't want to place the 5th piece of a row or column as they give you 'only' 5 points but the 6th piece can give your opponent 12 points. Here if you place the 3rd and 4th card in a row (there are 5 animals and 5 colors here) your benefit is bigger than when you place the last single card there. Also it's a nice change of pace that you don't need to take notes during the whole game. We both liked it.

When he woke up, I played The Little Orchard with my 3-year-old son. It's a cooperative memory game where you try to collect the cherries before the raven collects them from the tree. We won our first game but then he demanded another play "where the raven gets all the cherries". He is very PC.

Then I started to write this geeklist... I think it's time to finish it now.
