My younger son just challenged me to play at least 50 different games (not counting Glory to Rome for some reason whistle ) by the end of the year.

Since there are 50 days from now till the day after Christmas, I'm going to alter the deal a little and make it just a bit more challenging. The new deal is that I will attempt to play at least 50 different games in 50 days, with today as Day 1. This doesn't mean I have to play one different game each day. As long as I get 50 or more in by December 26, 2011, I win.

Day 1

Travel Blokus is a game I'm pretty good at. Counting today's play, I've won 15, lost 8, and tied 1 game. The red, blue, yellow, and green bits in regular Blokus are nice, but I really like the choice they made with the orange and purple in my travel version.

We played Glory to Rome (GtR) too, but I lost to a Forum.

Day 3, Game I

We recently discovered how to play Puerto Rico corn indigo sugar tobacco coffee with 2 players, but we didn't have to resort to those alternate rules tonight because our nephew-in-law came over to play games with us. It was a close battle between my wife and me. We each had 2 of the double-sized bonus buildings, but only I had both of them activated when the point tokens ran out ending the game. However, her wharf had earned her enough of those tokens to sneak by for the win.

We played more than one game tonight. See below.

Day 3, Game II

We've come to enjoy At the Gates of Loyang more than any of us thought we would originally - probably because we learned Uwe's other games, Agricola and Le Havre, first. This was again a 3-player game tonight. It was even closer than Puerto Rico (above), but I wasn't in the running this time. Our nephew-in-law lost to my wife by just 1 coin, and he had a loan to boot. (My wife did not.)

We also played Glory to Rome to finish the evening's festivities. My wife went 3 for 3 tonight. It was a Forum win with help from the Gate and the Ludus Magna. Nice combo.

Day 4

Odin's Ravens is a game we bought several years ago. It looks like it was about November or 2006, based on my recorded plays. We haven't played it a lot since then. In fact, only twice since 2007. It's not that it's a bad game; it's just not as exciting/interesting as some of the others we own. snore

Also, I've noticed that we don't enjoy games that are 2-player-only games. We tend to have more fun with games mislabeled as multi-player. But that's just us. YMMV.

First, just take a close look at the cool pic on the left by Rosco. I live in the vicinity of row 10 (from the top), column 5 (from the left).

I like tiles. blank

We normally play Carc with both the Inns & Cathedrals and the Traders & Builders expansions - even when teaching it to someone new, because the expansion without the pigs is just too hard to separate. We don't use the river though.

I had a good game tonight: 225 to 151. Pretty high on both sides, and we even left a lot of barrels, wheat, and fruit-by-the-foot on the table; that is, there was quite a bit of construction unfinished.

I like TILES.

Day 5, Game II

We own 10 varieties of Trivial Pursuit, plus a set of cards called USA Trivia Tour. It was our go-to game before Euros came into our lives and took up permanent residence in 2006. It's still one of my wife's favorite games.

We played the Disney version (blue box, adult cards only) tonight. I won on a pink question by answering Kim Carnes. (The question wasn't even about "Bette Davis Eyes".) My wife only had one glitch* left to get.

This play counts for all our versions. I won't let another qualify for inclusion in this list.

*Glitch is the official name for those bits most people incorrectly call "pie pieces" or whatever. It was coined by my brother-in-law who was first among our relatives to discover TP** back in the 80s.

Today my wife started off faster than anyone I've ever seen, finishing the 9 column on her first turn - and nearly the 7 too. I managed a victorious comeback though. She just couldn't stop. (It had to be said.)

Castle is one of my wife's faves. We've played over 100 times, and I wouldn't even come close to calling it a go-to game. It's just that we've had it for a relatively long time already. In fact, in just 4 days we'll celebrate the 5th anniversary of our first play.

Some day I'd love to build a real castle. It would have all the modern conveniences inside, but it would still be a castle of stone - dungeon and moat included obviously. I'd probably have to move to another country to do though, eh?

Here's a 2-player word game I bet you've not heard tell of. I just received this yesterday from Slovakia, nearly 2 months after placing the order. It's reminds me of Boggle, Scrabble, and Othello rolled into one. Nice flexible board and well done letter tiles. Onliest thing is that it'll be hard to store, since it came in a triangular corrugated shipping box. zombie

If you look at the representative image for WYPS (not the one at the left), you'll see my shiny new copy.

Day 7, Game III

Carc: Castle is a 2-player game I nearly always win. I had won my last 4 out of 5, and I can only guess but am pretty sure that's close to my overall winning percentage. I just "get" this one better than my missus...until tonight.

A big part of this game is collecting the bonus/rule-breaker tiles found intermittently along the scoring track. I just couldn't hit them tonight. It's common to get 4, 5, 6 of them. Tonight, 2.

Day 8

My wife didn't get home until after the Packers' rout started. We didn't try to play one during the game. gulp Instead we did the geeky thing and had a 5-way Hangout over at G+.

My 3 children are currently in Des Moines, Eau Claire (WI), and Watertown (SD). The two in DM and EC don't have ESPN, and the local stations didn't pick up the game. (Still not sure why the EC stations wouldn't.)

So I had one laptop setup for chatting and another about 3 feet in front of our TV. The TV picture wasn't great online, but along with the chat, it was better than nothing.

I was surprised that I'd only played Masons 20 times as of this play. It feels like a lot more...in a good way.

Day 10, Game II

Key Harvest has sort of a homey feel. I think it's the harvest colors and the artwork in general. I like it.

Tonight was a good night for me. Yes, I know I said that already, but it was. I don't often go 2 for 2 in one day. Much more often it's 0 for 2.

We've only played Key Harvest a handful of times, so I'm not sure how often this happens. The last thing you normally score at the end of the game is sort of a bonus for having the most crop counters of a given type. It seems that most of the time this really wouldn't affect the final outcome. It's like getting a few extra points for cash on hand in Hacienda or Saint Petersburg. It gives you one last glimmer of hope, but you know the guy in the lead is still gonna win.

Not so tonight. I was behind by 3 when all the other scoring was done. I had the majority in each of the 5 crops and won by just 2 points. Whew! arrrh

Bohnanza is one of the funniest games to listen to, if you're not playing it.

Talking about trading a Stink Bean for a Black-Eyed Bean is serious business, if you're in the middle of negotiations. But otherwise....

We hadn't played this in over 2 years (mostly because of lack of bodies), but this time we had the full complement of 7 players. It feels like I rarely win this (and Uncle Ken always does), but I see that I've won at least the last two times I've played.

I can't see why you can do this here but not that there. It makes more sense to me that when someone is using the birthing room in 'Gric no one else can have a baby until next time around.

That said, I did fairly well this time. Still 3rd out of 3, but at least I was in the running.

Day 13, Game II

Gemlok is usually a very simple game of roll and move, or roll and move and bump and move. Not much to it.

Today's game, however, featured lots of GEMLOK die rolls each of which freezes one of your pieces for the remainder of the game. That actually made for a much more interesting game. It actually became tough to make a legal roll and move that was helpful.

I've been winning what feels like more than my fair share of these games, but not this one. The final turn can be a killer.

Day 14

Yspahan is a game we pull out more often than others - probably about as often as Masons and Thurn and Taxis. It's light enough, plays quickly, and has enough interesting options.

It's the distribution of the (usually) 9 dice rolled that makes all the difference in what you can do. In a 2p game though, you only use 8 dice. We didn't have even one roll where the entire dice board got filled, and we even spent some gold on the extra yellow dice several times. The only time anyone got into the ritzy section of town was when I picked a card that allowed me to place one cube anywhere I wanted. That move by itself didn't win me the game, but it didn't hurt.

Day 15

We have the Discovery Toys version of Bazaar. We got it long ago when the kids were little. We always played by the rules included because we didn't know any better.

Thanks to BGG, we now use the much better original Sid Sackson rules. They add (or, return) another layer of strategy to an already fun game.

Just noticed I'm half way to the 50-game goal already. Any guesses as to how far over the top I go by Day 50?

Day 16

No time for a game tonight. Working late and then a guest arrived for the holiday.

Day 17

Two days in a row with no gaming qualifies as a streak, or a slump, around here. That will end on Day 18 though, especially since the inspiration for this list has arrived from college (student teaching, actually).
