Just added a new Secret Santa Poll . Head over to [geekurl=http://boardgamegeek.com/article/7924278#7924278]Week 2 Secret Santa Poll[/geekurl] to see how everyone is faring thus far in this year's event. And of course, add your votes!

ALRIGHT! It is time once again for the annual Secret Santa List, this time the 2011 Edition. For those of you who are new to the list:

I run this list as a central location to let your Secret Santa know when your (hopefully much appreciated) gift has arrived.

Use this list to record what your Secret Santa sent you and remember to include any comments such as thanks that you want to give your Secret Santa. When you post on this list, you may want to make a note on your profile with a link to your entry so your Secret Santa can easily locate your confirmation of delivery and your reaction. That way your Secret Santa can look to see if you received your gift and you can post any comments you may have about the gift here and you can reply without the identity of your Secret Santa ever having to be released!

Please only make an entry when you actually receive the present! This assists those of us who read the list regularly as recipients are adding their gifts in a chronological order. No placeholder entries, please.

In years past this list has been heavily monitored as the gifting season approaches and I am sure the same will hold true this year.

Last year there were 1,437 unique entries spread over 58 pages. I'm curious to see how huge it grows this year. As a tip - if you go looking through the previous years' lists, please be mindful of which year you are actually posting your gift to. There have been multiple occasions of people posting a gift from the current year on the previous year's list. That would likely diminish the chances of your Secret Santa getting around to seeing it...

I find it very handy to put a link on your profile page so your Secret Santa knows where you have posted the feedback so s/he doesn't have to sort through 2000 entries to find yours quickly.

To see all previous years' editions of this list and to give the new Secret Santa participants an idea of how this works, look at these links:

does a superb job using the data from this list to create his great statistical look at the hottest gifts of the season. This year's version of his list is located at:

Most Popular Secret Santa Games of 2011

Last year: Most Popular Secret Santa Games of 2010

Want some for your stocking? Simon also runs a Secret Santa Sweepstakes which is located at:

This year: 2011 Secret Santa Sweepstakes

Last year: 2010 Secret Santa Sweepstakes

IMPORTANT - When you get your gift(s), take the time to "Add Item" to this GeekList rather than place a comment at the bottom of the list. This helps the statisticians out there.

A good example of how to make an entry containing multiple gifts is located at: this entry.

Making an actual entry will also make it easier for your Secret Santa to locate your Item.

If you would like to taunt your "target" while maintaining your secret identity, you can do so using the Santa logon. Just log yourself off and close any BGG windows (if you don't you take the chance of being discovered if the new username doesn't take) and log on using this info:

Username: santa
Password: password

I hope you have a terrific holiday season and enjoy the list!

Looking through my bills and other assorted junk mail I noticed that I had an envelope from BoardGameGeek of all places. I got a nice little addition to my ever expanding Dominion collection. Also received a hint that more was on the way. Horray! Thanks Santa!

I am in the middle of multiple moves this holiday season, so I put a note in my gift exchange information informing my Santa of this so that we wouldn't be in the trouble of things being sent to the wrong address. Because of this I expected that Santa would wait a while for things on my end to settle down before he(?) sent me my deserved coal. Instead, I received this message on Sunday morning:

Santa wrote:
Rudolph gave me the message that you're moving this season,
It matters not why, I sure don't need the reason,
But your delivery address I will need to know,
Before I make my visit, with your game(s) to bestow.

So just drop me a message or post on your profile,
Where I can drop off your gift, flying many a mile,
Update your list quickly, but don't be too squirrely,
'Cause Christmas this year, for you, might come early...

Santa

Games? Like PLURAL? MIGHT COME EARLY? How was I supposed to get anything done for the next few days now? All atwitter, I quickly finished off editing my wishlist and writing Santa a letter on my profile. It wasn't much longer before I got another rhyming, colour-coordinated message:

Santa wrote:
Your package should arrive soon and you have my permission,
To open up your gifts before Christmas, without my derision,
I hope you and your game group have fun, and remember,
Your games should arrive 'round the 16th of November...

Santa

I tried to put thoughts of the 16th out of my mind and push on with my life, but come the 16th I received this additional (and final) double rhyming couplet from my mysterious jolly benefactor (and taunter):

Santa wrote:
Roses are red and violets are blue,
Elves will soon be delivering to you,
And so you don't oversleep in your slumber,
Below, Santa has provided a tracking number...

Santa

But here, life got in the way. On the Tuesday, I had worked a ridiculous 15 hour shift helping move a friend of a friend of a friend, or something like that. Getting home at 1 AM, dead tired and very, very sore. I did in fact "oversleep in my slumber" and missed the postie the next morning. The bell rang at 7:58, and by the time I groggily made it to the door, any sign of Santa's delivery worker was long gone. That day we had our first snow of the season, which is pretty early around here, and as a result of that I ended up trapped on the wrong side of the valley and had to stay overnight at a friend's. Come Thursday I was finally able to access my postal box, and in it I found this box, from a familiar address:

A few hours later, I finally had the spare time to open it and go through it, making sure to have my trusty camera ready first to save this moment for posterity. I have to admit, seeing that the box was scarcely bigger than say, Puerto Rico, I was a little worried about its contents. But what I found was that the box was jammed packed with compact gaming goodness:

First, there was this card, with a handwritten message from Santa's helper and a business card further identifying that Santa had contracted my gift out to Starlit Citadel.

Unfortunately, Santa's helper neglected to remove a label from the biggest item in the box, kind of ruining the surprise as to what it was:

Yep, it was Glen More! I'm a big fan of Carcassonne, and I've been excited about this one since I first heard about it. Can't wait to try it out with friends.

Next up, there was this Miscellaneous Game Accessory:

These were actually on my wishlist! A gamer just can't ever have enough plastic baggies. A very nice touch from Santa.

Next up there was this little box:

Which turned out to be No Thanks!!

I've been coveting this one for a while, but never picked it up myself. Very glad to get it. My group is short on fillers, so this will definitely fill a niche, plus I can play it with the family over the holidays. Awesome!

That left just the one mysterious mid-sized package left:

Not having any idea what it was, I opened it and found this:

Yep, Batt'l Kha'os, a game I'd never heard of but looks like Carcassonne with orcs. Looks neat. I'm curious to try it out... and it looks like a lot of Canadian geeks will be getting this one this Christmas.

A ton of thanks to Santa. You've given me an excellent Secret Santa experience this year. I couldn't ask for more. I'm very excited to try out the new games, and have already started putting Glen More's bits into the baggies.

I can't help but be struck by the similiarities to last year's Secret Santa experience for me. Both times I was contacted early by a vigourous, friendly Santa, both times I received my gift in the first week of the exchange, although this time I was a little slower posting and narrowly missed the first page of the geeklist. Most spookily, both times I got my games just in time to witness the first snowfall of the year! Santa truly is uncanny.

Now, is he the Californian I think he is?

April Fool's came early this year. Secret Santa contacted me that due to the recession he would only be able to send something small like a cardgame.

I wrote a message on top of my wishlist that I didn't mind as long it was something he really wanted me to try (or something from my wishlist).

Next I got a message that he messed up and that I either should burn the package or return it, and he would send me a postcard instead.

Now I was thoroughly confused, how could he not have understood my message? Did he send me something he knew I wouldn't like? And/or he never tried?

Two days after I got a package with my gift. And discovered Secret Santa was confused all along! It is not the goal to buy (almost) everything on my wishlist, you just need to pick one, or two.

Although I was completely fooled, and thoroughly confused, and just a bit nervous, I have a fantastic Secret Santa!

Not only Dixit! but also:
Hive

And to complete my Funkenschlag collection:
Power Grid: Brazil/Spain & Portugal
Power Grid: Russia & Japan
Power Grid: The Robots

While I was just expecting a cardgame! (will explain later)

(I opened the box expecting a present for the kids birthday which we ordered online.)

Edit: added my story.

At work this morning came a package, and I opened it to find this game staring up at me, along with Age of Industry Expansion #1: Japan and Minnesota, the expansion.

I was dumbstruck. I had to sell my deluxe version of this game because of a bout of financial hardship a few months ago, so I put it on my list. I had NOT put the expansion on my list because I didn't think it was fair to ask for both--since the base game is very pricey. But Santa went above and beyond. Uff Da!

I'm thoroughly pumped to get this game back, and the Minnesota board will be a highlight because:

a) The 10,000 lakes will be fun to navigate around.
b) I expect that the new non-specific industry will be selling powdermilk biscuits.
c) Wisconsinites love hating on MN. Next to Duluth, we're Superior!
d) Fargo to Fergus Falls is fun to say out loud.
e) Lefse and Loons.
f) BJ Lillo will like it.

But I am a bit sad that the game isn't printed in Minnewedgian.

Thanks Secret Santa! Your kindness and generosity have inspired me.

My Secret Santa had been sending me GeekMails over the past week or so, and I was thoroughly enjoying corresponding with him--and I grew more excited when he said that my present might arrive this week.

Of course, I have no self-control whatsoever (don't worry, Santa knew that!), and so when I saw the large package on my doorstep, I had to open it up.

Imagine my amazement when I saw TI:3 inside the box! I'd previously owned this game, but had never played it: I received it in trade right when I moved back to Michigan, and didn't have a game group at the time. So I'm thrilled to get this gem back into my collection, and I can't wait to have a go at it.

Thanks a million, Santa! Merry Christmas to you and yours!

I cannot express how impressed I am with my super speedy Santa. Santa admitted the little known secret of actually being Australian (as opposed to from the Lapland of legend) yet his parcel arrived today by Special Delivery. Nicely wrapped with a fancy sparkly card AND not one, but TWO recent issues of Counter to boot.

Resisting great temptation, this delightfully exciting monster of a package will be put under the tree (once it goes up!). I gather from feeling the parcel that there are three (yes, three!) items so many many thanks in advance for Santa's extraordinary generosity!

To give an idea of size, please see this picture of my one year old daughter Alexandra trying out the box for size. A Counter reader of the future I hope.

I will update this after Christmas to offer my thanks more fully...

Update

WOW!

I am speechless with delight and amazement at my Secret Santa's generosity!!

I was overjoyed to see Mansions of Madness which would have been fabulous simply on its own and then I saw Season of the Witch!

But wait, believe it or not, there is more! Fresco: The Glaziers AS WELL! An expansion to one of my favourite games.

Yay and double yay for my exceptional Santa for giving me my favourite present this year from the other side of the world!

Thank you so very very much!!

well it looks like i've been a good boy this year. santa has arrived early and got me this game Belfort. it just so happens that it was my absolute #1 thing I wanted!

but thats not all!

JAB: Realtime Boxing was also included in the box as well!

thanks santa!

WOAH! hold the phone!

this is completely untrue! apparently i got my secret santas confused with eachother. my deepest apologies. the REAL bgg santa gave me something that i would never have suspected. what generousity!

first was magestorm. a $55 item itself and more than sufficient than was necessary for this program. but did he stop there? oh.... no he didn't.

next up was On the Underground! unbelievable! now he's gone too far. generousity of this community is just simply amazing sometimes. but wait...whats this?! another package? holy crap.

Turns out my secret santa lives in london. and he wanted something for me to remember him/her by. so s/he got me Looting London. something that wasn't on my wishlist HOWEVER i did want to complete the gryphon bookshelf games and this was definately one i didn't have.

i can't thank my santa enough. s/he went WAY above and beyond what was required for this. not only that, they did it for a complete stranger! in these tough times it just amazes me what kindness and generousity one can recieve thorugh a warm heart felt community that is BGG. thank you santa. thank you bgg. thank you.

This is the first that was sent to me. This game was accompanied by the prequel novel for the Dragon Age Origins video game. Rock on, Santa.. Rock on.

Dear BGG Secret Santa, 2011 version,

I would have thought it would be hard to live up to my last year's Santa(s) standards. Those guys kicked some serious ass. But you, my mystery friend, have pulled it off! Let me tell you a story, by way of explanation.

As I narrowed down the choices for my own Santa target, I started looking for the best prices for his gifts. I found it at Coolstuffinc.com. Now, as you know, they happen to offer free shipping on orders over $100. So, I figured, "why not toss in a few of the games I want to save on the shipping?" The answer to that would be, 'because spending $60 on games to save $10 on shipping isn't very smart.' Well, not being smart has never stopped me before. So I added a few games to my cart, removed some, added others, trying to find just the right balance of games to go over $100 and net me a nice score. But the 'spending $60 to save $10' voice wouldn't stop whispering in my ear. So I waited, for inspiration. And never did make the plunge to buy the whole load. In fact, I was going to finalize my order today.

If you log into Coolstuffinc.com as me, right now, here are the games you'll find:

Chaos in the Old World (for my target);
Chaos in the Old World: The Horned Rat Expansion (for my target);
7 Wonders: Leaders (for me);
Innovation: Echoes of the Past (for me);
JAB: Realtime Boxing (for me)!

So, if you're not my secret santa, but are just reading along, can you guess what my secret santa sent me this year? Which of the three games that I was about to order did he send my way? If you guessed 7 Wonders: Leaders, you'd be right but you'd also be wrong. The same would hold true if you guessed either of the next two. NOW can you guess why? THAT'S RIGHT! My secret santa this year sent me ALL THREE of the games I was getting ready to buy for myself!

Now, to add to this, let me tell you a brief tale. My buddy Bruce has this excellent "who goes first" device that we call "The Fickle Finger of Fate." It's a metal pointer that spins, like in spin the bottle. Yes, you guessed it, my secret Santa sent me one of them as well!

I believe in Santa Claus, and except for a short period as a foolish teenager, I always have. And now, if anyone wants to try and tell me he isn't real, I can just tell them this tale!

THANK YOU SECRET SANTA! I so hope you will let me know who you are some day. Really, that was terrific.

And, btw dear reader, it gets better, because he sent me a game that wasn't even on my wishlist, a bit of a surprise I imagine! A cool looking card game called Archaeology: The Card Game!

Thanks for a merry Christmas, Santa!

Chris

Santa sent me a message and only a few days later a beautifully wrapped gift arrived...

and it contained 'Ghost Stories'!

I've never played it and look forward to battling ghosts with my wife by my side!

My toddling daughter has already claimed the wrapping paper as her own

I had the very best Secret Santa ever! I had so much fun with all his messages - there was an elf and reindeer led coup who threatened to bring me only euro games in an effort to "re-educate" me! Fortunately Santa was restored to the north pole in just the nick of time.

I must have been well behaved this year, because Santa delivered 4 nicely wrapped packages to my door. In addition to the Adventurers, I also received:

Panic Station

Gloom and...

Battl Khaos

Thank you so Much Secret Santa! You are the best!

In case anyone is interested, here is the conversation that I had with my Secret Santa:

Yesterday I got notification that a package had arrived from Amazon. That had to be my Secret Santa!

After getting the box from the post office, I opened it and immediately knew what it was, despite the giftwrap - Quarriors was one of my top wishlist games and the box shape was a dead giveaway.

In any case, Santa didn't mind me opening the gift early as long as I enjoy it, which I fully intend to do

Thank you very much, Santa!

I had an incredibly efficient Mysterious Maurice. A most generous Hidden Hannukah Harry. A truely amazing Secret Santa.

I'm a Canadian ex-pat living in Israel, so I tend to try and find somebody who I know is coming to visit in January and give their address in Canada as an alternative shipping address to make things easier for my sender.

This year my mother-in-law is coming in early January, and I figured that was perfect. Who knew my sender would be so efficient. Now I need to anxiously wait until she gets here. (Or get it to my grandfather who is coming sooner...)

The box arrived on Wednesday to my mother-in-law's office, and she just accepted it without opening it. Oh my poor curiousity! I figured I'd wait until I knew what was in it before posting here.

Last night I received an SMS from my wife detailing what was in the package. I was incredibly happy. I received not 1, not 2, but THREE games.

I got
,
which I'm excited to try after watching many reviews on it.

Ricochet Robots fills a much needed hole in my collection of a discrete round filler that can be started/stopped as needed, with as many players as you need. A friend brought a copy to game night a while back, and I decided immediately that I needed my own copy.

And finally:

So those of us who feel a need for werewolf type games can get it out of our systems.

Thank you my Anonymous Benefactor! You are amazing.

First my Santa riddled me with this:
Quote:
"Pharoah climbed the castle walls just to hear the famous line, All the world's a stage..."

Now that contains both overt and oblique references to quite a few games on my wishlist, as I discovered while checking ALL of their respective pages for more details! Pharoahs, climbers, castles, walls... a stage? Surely not... No... I didn't dare to dream. And why so many references? Was it just to distract me?

Then, this morning, I received this from my 'Misfit Elf':
Quote:
We have had the pleasure of obtaining 'one of a thousand' for you.

"Oh the ocean is a vast and mysterious place to play"...
"One of a thousand"?

"The ocean"? What, like the Atlantic ocean? No...

But before I'd really had time to digest that little riddle...

BZZZZZZZ!!!

(That was our buzzer - my wife answers it, and then hangs up the entryphone.)

"Was that the postman?"

"Yeah"

"Well, open the door for him!"

tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep

That's the postman coming up the stairs. We live on the 3rd floor (the 4th floor in US sizes, 'cos everything's bigger in America, isn't it!)

"Sign here"

"Thanks!"

"See ya"

(He was a different postman to yesterday, to the thrifters among you with a sense of déjà vu!)

Ludibay? I didn't order anything from Ludibay. Wait, how drunk was I on Saturday night? (I wasn't)

Pop. Slit. Slice. Rip...

Packing 'S's! I love packing 'S's!

Who are these handsome devils...? Wait, surely not?! But it's not even available in the UK! Oh, but this is from Ludibay...

Yaaaaaaayyyy!!! $how Manager!

So this is why I seemingly inexplicably left that 2nd hand copy of Atlantic (Ocean) Star on the shelf in that awesome little game store in Cologne five months ago, while on my stag weekend. I must have known this was going to happen!

It's a fantastic Queen Games presentation, as ever, with wonderful multiple-language rule books, and beautiful artwork, and a great big board, and a uniform square box, and tiles and cards and paper money (I love paper money!)

...

Cut to:

INT. MY HOUSE - 11:00AM (i.e. when the postman normally comes)

BZZZZZZZ!!!

"Hello?"

"Postman. I've got a package for you"

pzzzzzzzzzzz...

tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep tep

"Morning, how you doing?"

(It's yet another postman)

"Christmas is coming early for me this year"

"Aye, a lot of people are saying the same"

"Thanks"

He was lying, by the way - he had not one, but TWO packages for me.

Pop. Slit. Slice. Rip...

Pop. Slit. Slice. Rip...

Here's the final haul!

Here are the "climbers" (the "one of a thousand"), the "castle walls", the "men and women merely players", merely playing on the revamped Atlantic Star. It's all there, it's all here, it's all clear now.

But seriously? I have really done NOTHING to deserve THIS. I mean three games? Trust me, all of these will be shared with my fellow Scottish Geeks next weekend. I shall be singing the praises of Secret Santas the world over, but especially you, my invisible anonymous wonderfully generous Santa, and your little Misfit Elf.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, Secret Santa and 'Misfit Elf'! You totally rock! And as this generosity warms my heart, I shall be paying it forward today and this Christmas. You are an inspiration to Secret Santas everywhere, and to me most of all.

I can only hope my target is as ecstatically happy as I am right now, when he gets his little treats.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Edit #2: I've had another GM from Santa - apparently,
Quote:
"one in a thousand" does not pertain to 'Climbers'
and I have yet to see...
Quote:
how Pharoah pertains to all of this...

I'm now searching for superlative superlatives to describe how I feel, but I'll keep this updated as and when I know more...

Edit #3: I'm having a pretty busy weekend entertaining family, but on Saturday morning, as we were leaving the house, who should be standing outside but one of Friday's postmen, with yet another familiar-looking box, from one of the UK's FOGS. I ran it upstairs, and quickly sliced the box open to see what was inside.

This time there was a card inside, confirming what I already knew - that this ridiculously generous haul of games is indeed from Secret Santa. And I must say, Santa's handwriting is not what it used to be. I wonder if he's moonlighting as a doctor, or vice versa!

And a quick rip of the paper revealed that the Pharoah clue has been fulfilled - the bright sun-coloured background, and Egyptian writing of Pharoah-themed worker placement game Egizia, another one that has been high on my 'Love to Have' list for some time.

But try as I might, I still can't find the link to "one of a thousand", and must admit to being completely stumped on that one... Only time, or more clues from Santa, will tell...

Edit #4: Ok, I'm writing this as it happens. The UPS man has just left the building, and I am tearing open the box.

More packing chips! The note said "Happy happy Christmas from your Secret Santa!" Oh Santa, it already will be a very very happy Happy Christmas!

So this must be "one in a thousand"...

Oh. My. God.

Ohmygod!

Ohhh myyy Goooood!

Look at all this Fragor gaming goodness!

I thought this was completely sold out. I had certainly given up hopes of ever owning a copy. But it's very very very much appreciated.

On Sunday, a couple of friends and I will host the third of our 12-hour "Unplugged Games Days" in Edinburgh. Previously, The Lamont brothers had hosted an excellent and a very similar event called DiceCon, two of which I attended when I first got into gaming. We then decided to do one ourselves, hoping to alternate with their events. They have since passed the baton to us and have very kindly endorsed our events. We consider them our very special guests, and I'm sure Gordon will be delighted to see this getting some play when he comes on Sunday.

Is it possible my Secret Santa is the best Secret Santa ever? Surely up for a nomination.

This is more than I could ever have dreamed of for Christmas. I sort of wish I had had the patience to wait till Christmas, but I'm so glad I will able to share all of this awesome generosity with my fellow gamers on Sunday.

Secret Santa, you are very very naughty, but also amazing!

wow kiss

My Santa didn't contact me right away, but I have just received a message saying that his elves have tracked my package to my doorstep (Maybe a post office box!)

My Santa is an Italian Santa! The Italians seem to be off to a fast start this year. Ironic.

I will update this as soon as I give in and find out what it is.

(Really, I don't think I can hold out a month . . . unless Santa tells me to . . . )

Thank you so much!

Update: And also 2 de Mayo

Thank you so much again, Santa!!

Got home today just in time for the postman delivering a large parcel.
Opened it up to find 1 large xmas pressy and 2 smaller ones plus a xmas card. My girlfriend told me I had to open them there and then. Me being the patient one wanted to wait but you know what women are like :-)

After being forced against my will (honestly) I opened them up. I found small world Underground. And 2 arkham horror expansions Lurker and Pharaoh.

Thank you secret santa you are the best Im sorry I was coerced into opening them early. blush

Santa is so quick he MUST be a ninja! Dungeon Lords is one of those games I've had my eye on for awhile but just never got around to buying, can't wait to give it a spin!

Also received:

Agricola: Farmers of the Moor

I had literally JUST bought Agricola at the last minute and loved it so I put the expansions on my wish list. I'm ready to throw in the expansion now!

Thank you Santa for being extremely awesome and generous, THANK YOU!
