Every month someone will ask for a feature where we can see the rankings through time. No such thing exists (anymore) and numbers for the early years will never be recovered. Therefor: a GeekList! In which I will try to find all the previous TopGames. The Number Ones, the Top Ten Games of all time.

This game might have gone higher. Even with the "Self-Appointed Top 10 Defense Brigade" working their 1's, it had a chance. Sadly, I think it was right about the time this game's momentum was slowing that the Games Workshop take down hit and even more punitive ratings piled on. Considering GW's actions, I can't fault anyone who lowered their ratings accordingly (a well-supported game system is more immersive, and with good user-generated content, easier to teach/play/sort/store/strategize/etc, and more deserving of a higher rating than a closed off one.)

I really don't agree with this at all, a company's moronic actions doesn't impact the quality of the game. People are being vindictive and lowering their ratings out of spite rather than personal enjoyment of the game which is just as stupid as GW's actions.

So tell me: Suppose you meet the designer of a game you like. And suppose he turns out to be an utter *ssh*le, who treats you arrogant, stupid and without any care about your feelings.

Would you feel the same about the game the next time you play it? Would you even play it again? The fysical quality of the game hasn't been impacted. The way you feel about the game might though. And that's what the ratings are about.

OK I'll bite.

Would I still play the game? If I bought it already and liked it before the meeting with this unfriendly designer, certainly. I won't deprive myself from the enjoyment. Would I then buy more games from this designer? That's questionable given my new ill feelings towards him, but if the game looks really good, I still might. I suspect I'd try it first. Perhaps I'd be more reluctant to try his games though. But back to the game, if I enjoyed it previously, why would this no longer be the case? I don't see it at all. It's the designer I dislike, not his creation. And it was established I enjoyed the game. People need to be rational about this, why sacrifice their own enjoyment of the game which they paid for?

I can understand people no longer wanting to support the designer in this case for future purchases, or discuss the events of the meeting, but to lower the rating of a game out of spite is just senseless in my opinion.

Ratings of a game should be based on one's personal enjoyment of the game, not towards our feelings about the designer/publisher/distributor or whether BGG should have a separate listing for a game and its Anniversary edition...

Anyhow, I was hard initially, the action of vengefully lowering ratings certainly isn't as moronic as GW, but it's still pretty lame.

True, I like the game, but while I am able to convince players in playing Caylus based on the looks, it is still pretty difficult to sell them Brass or Funkenschlag.

By the way, before you check my rating on PowerGrid: the only reason I've rated it 10 is beacause I wasn't able to rate it higher. :-)

I've played this game many times. At the time it came out was a much better version of the Settlers as you could realy build up even with unlucky dice throws.

Not too bad as mecanics, but edited with such a poor material and ugly graphics.

It's because of Codex creep. The last Black Stones' codex makes the Black Stone player waaaaaaaaay cheesier than the White Stone player.

Where to find this information? Everywhere. First, of course, in the running lists:

LordT has a subscriptionlist for his monthly BGG Top 50 Statistics: here.

jmsr525 has a weekly Top 100 update on Tuesday. His latest is this one.

seppo21 send me a file with Top Ten snapshots from 2004 and 2005.

Of course we have the WaybackMachine - a lot of help, but a lot of searching as well. At one point I think Matthew Gray had a tool for calculating older rankings as well, but he no longer has it running.

And I have a few Top 300 lists saved as well and some Geeklists on BGG's history and stats. Forum searches on rankings also give a lot of information. If I missed something - I probably did - tell me. Correct me, add to the list, let's get the numbers correct!
