The 'list' is a work in progress -- it is my goal that every single game that is freely available on the internet will be listed here. A lofty goal, to be sure, but a noble one....

Since there are literally hundreds of free games available on the internet, I've decided to break the list into alphabetical chunks.

The format I'm using is pretty simple -- name, designer, publisher, status (free, shareware, demo, etc.), a short summary, and the website where it is available.

All summaries are either taken directly from the designer's/publisher's website, from the rules, or from the BGG entry. Any references to 'me' or 'I' refer to the designer, not yours truly...

Feel free to add to the list, but please only add games that have been released to the public by their designer or publisher -- don't add games that could be made for free using details and rules found on the internet but are actually commercially-published games. Also, please don't add public domain games such as chess, backgammon, poker, etc -- this would make the list unwieldy, to say the least.

Also, if you have played any of these games, please leave your comments.

A version of this list is also available at:
http://www.runestoneit.com/~dseagraves/canonical_list.html
http://www.runestoneit.com/~dseagraves/list_0-9.html

(A quick note: these entries were originally included with the U-Z list, but there are just enough numerically titled entries now, in my opinion, to warrant a separate list.)

42 - Hyperspace Expressway is an abstract strategy game for two players, played in two phases.
During the first phase players build a network of hyperspace expressways and motels. They score victory points according to the value of the planets they build motels on.
During the second phase, you can conquer planets of your opponent by moving a motel along a hyperspace expressway. At the end of the game, you score points for hyperspace expressways form empty planets to your motels.
The goal of the game is to have the most victory points, but whenever your score becomes higher than 42, it is immediately reduced by 42.

Available for free here on BGG.
If you like the game, please support it at NESTORGAMES continuous abstract game design contest.
If you thumb the contest geeklist too, you can win a copy in case it gets published.

18SCAN
Designer: David G. D. Hecht
Publisher: 18xx Yahoo! Group, David Hecht Designs
No longer available

From the BGG entry:

18xx meets Scandanavia -- Railroads on Skis

Intro from the manual: '18Scan is an 18xx game set in the Scandinavian peninsula of Northern Europe. It includes most of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. 18Scan is a small game, in the style of Mark Derricks one-state games 18GA and 18AL, and is intended as a change from the more robust 18xx games often played.'

From the Designer Notes: 'This is my second attempt at a small, short 18xx game: the first, 18VA, has matured -- alas! -- into a solid, medium-length performer, but has become quite unsuited for a quick fill-in-the-cracks session. I am hoping that 18Scan will not only prove to be a better short game, but will be sufficiently straightforward that it can also be used as an introduction to the 18xx system.

In 18Scan, I hope to bring to the table a simple game, yet with some strategic options, and a forgiving game -- unlike, say, 1830. At the same time, 18Scan has a number of subsystems (Minor Companies, a merger railroad, Destinations, various categories of trains) that provide a panoply of the wide variety within the 18xx gaming space.'

18Scan is no longer available from the 18xx Yahoo! Group. It is now a commercial product. I'll leave this entry solely for historical purposes.

Designer: David G. D. Hecht
No longer available

From the BGG entry:

18VA is an 18xx game set in Virginia as well as pertinent neighboring areas of Maryland and the District of Columbia. 18VA is a small game, in the style of Mark Derricks one-state games 18GA and 18AL, and is intended as a change from the more robust 18xx games often played.

The major hook in this game is the coal trains, which run mainly West-East, taking coal from the mountains to the coast, while the passenger trains run the North-South routes.

Also interesting is the fact that all railroads operate with just the President's share sold, and open with 5 shares and expand to 10 at the owner's discretion.

This game is no longer available for download from the 18xx Yahoo! Group website. It is now a commercial product. I'll leave this entry solely for historical purposes.

Beta (must join the 18xx Yahoo! Group to download)

From the author:

'I am releasing 18FL for general playtesting. 18FL is a simple game, intended to be used as a ''training'' game for new players, but (hopefully) with sufficient robustness to make its way into the ''short, filler'' game niche, along with 18GA, 18AL, and 18Scan. The mechanics are fairly straightforward: I am mainly interested in balance issues.'

18FL is an '18xx' game set in Florida. 18FL is a small 18xx game, in the style of Mark Derrick’s 'one-state' games 18GA and 18AL, and is intended as a change from the more robust 18xx games often played. It is my hope that it may serve effectively as a 'teaching game' as well, allowing new players a relatively benign introduction to the 18xx family of games.

Beta (must join the 18xx Yahoo! Group to download)

"These files comprise the pre-release, beta-test version of my design, 18US: a substantial 18xx game set in the Lower 48. Although with only two (oversize) map panels, 18US may appear to be a simple game, this is deceptive: it is a complex game with a substantial number of alterations to the 'customary' 18xx rules.

"18US is not for inexperienced players: it is designed to challenge those players who feel that they have mastered most of the existing games. I estimate 18US to be as complex or more than 1844 (Switzerland), and definitely more so than any of my previous designs.

"In some ways, 18US resembles 18EU, with the logic of 18EU taken to a pathological extreme.

"Before you play the game, I urgently recommend that all players--but especially experienced ones--read the Executive Summary: this should provide a sufficient 'feel' for the game that you will get off on the right foot, without overwhelming you with detail.

"I repeat, read the Executive Summary. READ THE EXECUTIVE SUMMARY. What I tell you three times is true.

"If you download and play the game, I would appreciate a feedback. This can be in any form you like: a game report, a set of questions, comments, whatever. In particular, please identify any rules issues you found."

1000 Blank White Cards
Designers: Nathan McQuillan, Riff Conner
Free

From the BGG entry:

1000 Blank White Cards is a card game which allows the players make the cards during the course of the game. Before play, players seed the deck with their own invented cards. These cards are shuffled in with blank cards to form a deck of about 60-90 cards.

Basically, the game follows 'Draw 1, Play 1'. Most cards have a point value of +1000 to -1000, and players may play a card on themselves, on another player, or on all players. If a player draws one of the blank cards during the course of play, they may craft a new card out of it, often countering other cards which have already been played.

Cards usually have a title, a picture, with a score and/or rule. Usually the picture, being a quick sketch by a non-artist, comes out as a stick figure. That's okay. This adds to the humor value, especially when another player makes a 'Stick-Figure Genocide' card. Cards can represent anything the designer wants to feature, from serious to absurd. (However, usually cards tend toward the latter.)

The game ends and points are tabulated after the deck is exhausted, and the winner is the player with the most points. Then, players lay out all of the cards face-up for the 'epilogue,' which allows players to choose the best cards to seed the deck for the next game.

1000 Blank White Questions
Designers: Jonathan Leistiko, Ben Gibbs
Publisher: Invisible City Productions
Free

A trivia game where you make up the questions for three to six players.

Object: To end the game with the most points by accurately answering trivia questions made up by your friends.

Each player gets a stack of blank cards and a pen. Before the game begins, each player makes up at least 12 trivia cards (20 or more is ideal.), bearing a question and an answer on one side. Leave the other side blank. You can make up any question you want, from factual trivia, to math or chemistry questions, to questions about your opinions or personal life. You can even create cards with false answers, but youll suffer for it in the game.

Each player goes around the board, answering the trivia questions that his opponents made up. the player gets points and a possible extra turn for each correct answer. If the player guesses wrong, all the other players get a chance to answer the question. If none of them answers it correctly, then the player who made the question loses two points and the active player gets to take another turn.

The player with the most points at the end of he game wins!

As you can see, this is a trivia game version of 1000 Blank White Cards.

1st Alamein
Designer: Lou Coatney
Free for educational use

1ST ALAMEIN is dedicated as a token of remembrance to the soldiers of the British Commonwealth--Australian, British, Indian, South African ... and New Zealander--and of Greece, Poland, Free France, and finally the United States ... who fought and defeated the Axis on the first 'Second Front' of the Second World War: North Africa.

1ST ALAMEIN is an educational 2-player operational level military history game simulating the historical decision-making situations of Allied and Axis commanders in Egypt, in July 1942. Although one player must serve as the Axis commander--personified by General, and then Field Marshal Erwin Johann Rommel ('The Desert Fox')--this is accepted in the spirit of learning. (It must never be forgotten that Rommel, a German national hero, was serving--however bravely and competently--*Nazi Germany*--along with Bushido Japan and Soviet Russia, three of the most evil totalitarian regimes ever to afflict humanity. However, it should also be remembered--to Rommel's credit--that he died on Adolf Hitler's orders, after it was discovered that he had supported the July 1944 attempt to assassinate Hitler.)

1ST ALAMEIN is intended to be a basic introduction to the study of military history through manual simulation games--board wargaming.

From the BGG entry:

Disciples is a religious themed card game for 2 players.

As the Disciples are put into play, the players attempt to play cards from their hand attempting to get the required number of cards on a Disciple to close him out. Certain Disciples have special rules associated with them about how cards can be played.

When a Disciple is closed out, he is scored and another takes his place. This continues until only 1 Disciple remains. When this happens, the game is over and the total is taken.

Hi Folks, sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. Haven't been on Boardgamegeek.com in a while. Here's a link to the Disciples print and play:

Also a bonus for you, for being so patient, another little game called Epidemic that I created a few years ago:

Please remember these are playtest kits and the games are about 75% to 90% done, but are completely playable. If you have any ideas or feedback on how we can make them better, I would be happy to include you in the credits if we use your idea, and send you a free copy of the game if it ever goes to print.

Using 36 six-sided dice and a six-by-six board (several nice boards are available on the website), the players take turns moving the dice around the board. When a die lands on another, the two dice compete by rolling, high die winning the battle. Play continues until only one die is left on the board.

Each player adds up the values on his dice - the highest total wins the game.

Several variants are also available on the website.

Thanks, Donald, I never thought I'd see one of my games reach the lofty heights of BGG. This one has been sitting on my site for the last couple of years, but I was never too interested in shouting about it. It's been played a few times over the intervening period and people have mostly seemed to like it as a quick asbstract game.

The whole idea came about because I'd bought a nifty dice cube from my local store and I was looking for a way to justify having made the purchase.

If anyone tries it and enjoys it, then my work is done and I'm one pleased chap.

There is a whole page of games at webgrognards.

http://grognard.com/board.html#complete

That page contains links (many old and out of date, but most are good) to print and play games, as well as demos and freeware computer games. I got most of the alternate rules I use for Flat Top (PBEM) from there as well.

Cheers
