Just played this twice over the weekend (as a board game) and really liked it. Glad to see there's a computer version. I'll be playing this! I wonder if it'll work on my iPod touch...

Alas, it doesn't.

I think there is a bug. The AI doesn't give the extra 2 points for monopolies at the end of the game.

If somebody else sells goods, you have to give up 1 marker of that color.

PlayMe1 wrote:
Also, I never seem to get a final turn -- the game seems to end after the player's turn who refreshes the board with goods markers triggering the "last turn" notification. I don't get a last turn.

In the game I played another player triggered the end of the game and I did get a last turn. When the first of the goods markers on the last stack is taken, the round is played to the end. If you'd already had your turn that round, you wouldn't get another.

Excellent computer version. I'm addicted.

(Edit: added 2/16)

Very tough AI to beat, though. Took me about 20 games to finally win, and it was just by 2 points 50 - 48.

Does the program enforce rules partially or fully, or not not at all like VASSAL and ZunTzu?

If it does not enforce rules then, it is off the the list.

Thanks,

Yes, this enforces everything. It is a multiplayer network game but you can simply boot it up and play solo.

It's an excellent piece of software.

Er, Hero Quest wasn't a particularly complicated game, yet this version is seemingly missing a ton of its gameplay aspects. You can't cast a spell, you can't search for treasure or traps, there's no dice roll for movement (probably a good thing)...

I'm left thinking, "what's the point?"

It's a work in progress. The link above is not the latest version; there's a version 2.08G and a beta of 2.08H available on the author's homepage ( http://home.quicknet.nl/qn/prive/lm.broers/download.htm). Although magic and searching aren't finished yet, you can now see the menus for them in game. Also on the author's site are a ton of ready-made quests available for download. Let's hope Gerwin Broers finds the time to finish it off. And then do Space Crusade laugh.

the searching for treasure is the barrels or boxes you find, i have no idea where the traps are (or a way to identify them before the sudden loss of life), and the spells are insanly powerfull (by level 4 of the main quest i had a plus 4 on my wizard [named tim from MP holy grail {greatest movie of all time}])

This is actually a very good conversion of HeroQuest, made in Gamemaker, which I didn't even know could do such a game. It has a pretty good interface, and has all the quests of the original game, plus a few expansions.

I don't know why this is listed as 5 professional on the software side. It won't install on a 64 bit machine even to run in 32 bit mode. It just fails instantly.

It may be a little unfair to expect a game released in 1997 to run on a modern 64bit machine without any hassle. As far as 32 bit mode goes, the fact that it does not work is not the fault of the game's developers. It's more the fault of 32 bit mode not being able to completely emulate the older 32bit Windows operating systems.

If you really want to play it, I wold suggest installing an older version of Windows. A good way to do this, if you don't want to remove your current OS is to to use a virtual machine. VirtualBox is very good, and free. You just need an old version of Windows. You will pay a performance penalty for using a virtual machine but if you have a modern 64bit CPU, you should have no problem running this game.

Also the AI is really strong at levels beyond 1st.

You can play it for 60 minutes but the full version costs about $20.00 and is really worth it IMHO...!!

Found another bug: sometimes when several players are tied for least helmets during an invasion, not all of them will have to lose people. It seems that once a player chooses to discard a warrior as a result of this, the game thinks the players that have yet to be processed are no longer tied for least number. I can find nothing in the rules to indicate events are resolved sequentially in this manner.

Edit: Also observed another tie-breaker failure.

FANTASTIC online version. It may say "basic", but that doesn't mean a sure victory. I win most of the time, but with some bad tile draws, you can still lose badly.

This can be challenging if you give the computer a head start. What I do is play a few moves without scoring a single point at the beginning. I am up to 4. So I play my first 4 tiles in such a way as to obtain no points whatsoever. Then on my 5th move I start trying. Giving the computer a head start makes the game fairly challenging. I wonder if a really good player could give the computer a head start of 8 moves or so.

Another option is to try to win with the perfect game. Getting an ingenious is all 6 colours.

This is the advance level?

No way, all you need to do is block one colour, computer will not get it till the very end of the game when it's too late.
I have never lost a game against this program!
I think that the level of play is higher on marquand site actually, and that one is supposed to be "basic".

I think you are playing against the easy bot. You can change the bot level via the game options. I still wouldn't call the hard bot advanced level, as I beat him almost every time... but he's certainly more challenging than Maquand's bots.

It is complicated.
But if u download the .rar, you extract the installer, run it and it will install a lot of pyton stuff.
Than you have to look under the pyton folder just installed and somewhere (do a search) you'll find a link to Aikisado executable.
I hope it helps

Umm, last time I checked, in Clue you actually COULD be the murderer.... Any character that played could be the murderer. This game just shows the actual MURDER attempts... In Clue one of you has already MURDERED Mr Boddy.

..and in Clue, you can be the murderer, not know it, correctly guess that you killed him, and you win!

I love that.

Yet your 9th favorite game is that merry pacifist romp, Hannibal: Rome vs. Carthage?

I guess it's true, it's all a matter of scale.

(It's cool, I tease my SO constantly about being a crunchy anti-war dude who still plays tons of FPSes... and then I go right back to my carefully orchestrated genocides in Civ4. )

Games that are added to this list must have:

* AI (artificial intelligence)
* If no AI then be a solitaire puzzle
* Enforce the game rules

Why this list?

1) The primary reason I created this list is so people can learn how to play a board games the way the designer and the publisher intended.

When I was new to modern European board games, pre-boardgamegeek era, I played board games with wrong rules because I did know what I was doing--like I said I was new modern board games. Playing by the wrong rules really changed some games to the point they were not fun to play. When you play a SoftBoard game, all the correct rules are enforced so you can play right.

2) The secondary reason is that I want people to be able to try a game before they buy a copy.

Unlike video games, unless someone you know has a copy and wants to teach it, it is hard to try a game before you buy it.

3) The third reason is that one can practice new strategies for a face-to-face game.

Enjoy,

--Sebastian

This list exists too! http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/140673/item/2124236#item21...

Kinda similar, but it's all games that can be played online for free (not necessarily with AI).
