Titan (the boardgame version) is one of my favourite games. This java version is faithful to the boardgame and is actually quite good. Now you can play with 6 AI/Human players in under 2 hours!

Regardless, if you want to know what Titan is all about, this is what I point people too. It is great for learning the game mechanics.

I've been playing this some lately - I actually think it's more fun making your own abstract maps with symmetric node layouts and playing short, tactical games on them than playing on the bigger geographical maps. There are a few problems:

* Game freezes up every now and then - annoying, but not frequent enough to stop me playing.

* The algorithm for calculating distances at the end is flawed. It works for most cases, but I've seen it deal out a harsher penalty to myself twice and a bot once than would be required by the rules. Example: I have two unconnected cities with minimum distances 3 and 4 respectively. They are connected by a double link. The game comes up with a total distance of 6, possibly by connecting the furthest node by the shortest path, then adding 2 for the double link to the adjacent city since that's now the shortest path to it. But you could of course just as easily start with the 3-city and then add 2 for a total of 5.

* Starting order isn't random. Player 1 will always be first when you start playing on a map. If you finish a game and start a new one without going to the map selection screen, player order will continue to rotate from where it was.

* If you set the number of segments per turn higher than 2, you will run into problems when connecting multiple groups in the same turn, being unable to extend from the second group.

* When editing cities in the mapper, you must be careful not to hit enter after you type in the name of a city. Doing so will get you an error message that you've used a prohibited character, and what's more, even after you correct this by deleting everything in the textbox, even though the game will allow you to save your map, it will not be a valid map as far as the game (or even the mapper) is concerned. I suppose you could use a hex editor to salvage the map in this case.

I'll post a few custom maps if anyone's interested.

Have you considered submit bugs (good cathes) you've found directly to the author?
I did it some time ago and he kindly replied in a couple of days.
The project is on hold, but he said a new bugfix/improved (with vexation) version will surely come out in the near future.

I've submitted also the Italy map I did with my bro, and he posted it on his website.

Trax, my favorite line or loop making game. You make a 8 space line or a loop while trying to prevent your opponent from doing the same.

Download and install the Windows client to connect to a Trax game server where you can play the Lobbybot AI for free. However you have to play from level one and work your way up with the Lobbybot.

You can purchase Doby, an offline AI that that you can play and start at any level.

There are the Buzz games for Playstation and You Don't Know Jack for PC.

Also, in the arcades of yore (now playable through MAME) there are several triva games. My favorite is one from Capcom called Quiz and Dragons, that actually plays like a fantasy board game where you fight the monsters by answering questions. There are four classes you can play as, and each has a special ability. Great stuff there.

IMO the AI is very weak. The user interface allows you to set up a row handicap board, so if you want to, the computer will have less distance to cross. Of course there is no pie rule in a handicap game. T1J does offer the pie rule, which is nice. It does not support link removal, but that is a minor esoteric issue which only serious devotees care about.

EDIT 5 years later: Version 0.2 is available now. IMO it is significantly stronger. It usually beats me when I give it 8 rows plus move. It understands some basic attacking patterns, and plays more aggressively than before.

This is one of my favorite online board-games, and I will be very sad when it's no longer free. The AI is a bit weak--its fanatical devotion to Lounges above all else can be its downfall--but it's fast and has a professional, clean, no-frills interface that works perfectly.

One of the few advantages of online vs FTF gaming is that the computer does the mechanical work. That's key here because the one problem with this otherwise fantastic game is that it's too mechanical. Fortunately, with the GTO version, the computer flips cards, places tiles on the board, adjusts fame, etc. It makes the game go quicker and smoother than in FTF play. And paying a one-time activation fee that essentially amounts to $5 isn't too much to ask to support a superb website like gametableonline.com.

If your load time is slooooooow...

Here is a solution from the FAQs:

"The images on every page are loaded from the internet. How can I reduce the time to load?
The images have to be loaded at game start, but then the images should not be re-loaded from the net. Please check your browser settings and activate the file cache/temporary internet files in your browser, so that the images are not loaded everytime."

I think the AI strength should be downgraded to "beginner". I beat it my very first game and have now never lost a game to it (and I had never played Web of Power before playing this computer version). I am impressed with the computer version but the AI is just not very strong.

Please note that this is very glitchy at times. In one game, the player who was last in turn order was eliminated, and the "turn" never ended. The game went on, but the orcs stopped attacking, Peacemaker stopped moving, and the Dragon was slain and never came back, at which point I realized what happened.

In another, I was involved in a Sorcerer vs. Sorcerer battle, and after the other side lost, the game crashed.

Luckily, I have a copy of the file on my old PC. If someone wants to me to email the file to them, I wouldn't mind. Maybe someone can host it somewhere.

Would there be a problem with that?

Also, I've noticed that I always go last in the turn rotation. And the game simply won't let me attack from certain spaces to other spaces (and I'm not talking about attacks that are illegal because they're over rivers). This was in a four-player game, maybe it's specific to that set-up or my machine. While these glitches are frustrating and make it pretty much unplayable, it's nice to see someone porting great old board games over to the computer.

There was an error in the demon encounters that resulted in a "transport to center of the Dragon's Lair" instead of "transport to a random Dragon's Lair space". The 1.5 version should be more forgiving of getting in to the Dragon's Lair.

Games that are added to this list must have:

* AI (artificial intelligence)
* If no AI then be a solitaire puzzle
* Enforce the game rules

Why this list?

1) The primary reason I created this list is so people can learn how to play a board games the way the designer and the publisher intended.

When I was new to modern European board games, pre-boardgamegeek era, I played board games with wrong rules because I did know what I was doing--like I said I was new modern board games. Playing by the wrong rules really changed some games to the point they were not fun to play. When you play a SoftBoard game, all the correct rules are enforced so you can play right.

2) The secondary reason is that I want people to be able to try a game before they buy a copy.

Unlike video games, unless someone you know has a copy and wants to teach it, it is hard to try a game before you buy it.

3) The third reason is that one can practice new strategies for a face-to-face game.

Enjoy,

--Sebastian
