I have loved playing this game for years with my only hesitation being the time involved to set up and track all the phases. Then I discovered this wonderful pc version. It has great graphics and you can customize many aspects of it. There are a handful of scenarios included to get you going, but the real fun is creating your own scenarios and building your own ships/fleets. You can even customize the map to some extent. The logistics sheets are faithful to the board game and the pc handles all the updates once the battle starts and thereby removes a lot of the downtime involved in the "paperwork". A great effort by the author and a "must have" in my opinion far anyone who enjoys space combat.
I was recently asked to share my opinions on the games A.I. I can't really give it a rank, but it seems to play pretty straight forward. The games are always close if the sides are balanced and outcomes do differ using the same ships, but different tactics. I have played plenty of battles that have gone down to the wire with only a few shots meaning the difference between victory or death. The A.I. will almost always focus on taking out weaker ships first it seems like, so that can be capitalized on by a human player. I would say the key to quality play is balancing the sides. However, I also have fun trying out scenarios like 3 ships vs 2, but both sides being equal in combat efficiencies, defense, etc. Overall, I have never had any complaints with the A.I. but I am sure hardcore SFB and STSTCS players may disagree. I do not have any complaints with it and always have fun. Enjoy!

Programmer's note:
roly wrote: I wrote this a few years ago, it should still work though - DirectX being backwardly compatible in theory. It works on my DirectX 8 PC at home and at work. If you are getting a screenful of hexes with camels and palm trees then it is probably working. But the interface is not very intuitive I know! Try clicking on the hexes underneath the 6 camels to the side of the board. (You may have to hold your click for a bit). Then click on a hex on the board to place that color camel. The AI player(s) will then play immediately and it will be your turn again. The AI is not very good actually but at least that means you can win! And also this version was never authorised by Kosmos or Reiner K although I did talk to him about it at the time...
