This, together with Great Battles of Alexander & Great Battles of Caesar (which included a Scenario Editor), was the officially licensed PC version of SPQR.

If you are playing these games in Windows 7, run them in Windows 95 Compatibility Mode.

I have loved playing this game for years with my only hesitation being the time involved to set up and track all the phases. Then I discovered this wonderful pc version. It has great graphics and you can customize many aspects of it. There are a handful of scenarios included to get you going, but the real fun is creating your own scenarios and building your own ships/fleets. You can even customize the map to some extent. The logistics sheets are faithful to the board game and the pc handles all the updates once the battle starts and thereby removes a lot of the downtime involved in the "paperwork". A great effort by the author and a "must have" in my opinion far anyone who enjoys space combat.

I was recently asked to share my opinions on the games A.I. I can't really give it a rank, but it seems to play pretty straight forward. The games are always close if the sides are balanced and outcomes do differ using the same ships, but different tactics. I have played plenty of battles that have gone down to the wire with only a few shots meaning the difference between victory or death. The A.I. will almost always focus on taking out weaker ships first it seems like, so that can be capitalized on by a human player. I would say the key to quality play is balancing the sides. However, I also have fun trying out scenarios like 3 ships vs 2, but both sides being equal in combat efficiencies, defense, etc. Overall, I have never had any complaints with the A.I. but I am sure hardcore SFB and STSTCS players may disagree. I do not have any complaints with it and always have fun. Enjoy!

The url is: www.slightlysilly.net

Just look for the ST:STCS heading on the front page and off you go.

Happy Hunting,
Marlinus64

And the author now says it's 98% done. I played a game of it and it is awesome!! It feels like Red November but with Star Wars! I know it is alot older than Red November, but I played that one first, so it was a fair comparison, I think.

Tarok Verzija 1.0
Download: ftp://ftp.pagat.com/software/tarok10.exe (FTP link: BGG doesn't seem to link this correctly but just copy it and paste into your address bar)

Developers: Roman Hribar, Bostjan Sustar, Robert Turnsek
Publisher: web published, originally at www.eunet.si

This is a very old (1994) Windows application that plays Slovenian Tarok (which is similar to Austrian Tarock or Königrufen). The interface is Slovenian only. If you actually know the rules you can probably figure out the dialogue boxes, but if you're new to both the language and the game you might find it a challenge.

Programmer's note:

roly wrote:
I wrote this a few years ago, it should still work though - DirectX being backwardly compatible in theory. It works on my DirectX 8 PC at home and at work. If you are getting a screenful of hexes with camels and palm trees then it is probably working. But the interface is not very intuitive I know! Try clicking on the hexes underneath the 6 camels to the side of the board. (You may have to hold your click for a bit). Then click on a hex on the board to place that color camel. The AI player(s) will then play immediately and it will be your turn again. The AI is not very good actually but at least that means you can win! And also this version was never authorised by Kosmos or Reiner K although I did talk to him about it at the time...

Thanks, I found homeoftheunderdogs.net but not that one. Both of them list a Through the Desert which looks slightly different; tried downloading it and it didn't work on the comp I am on now.

Edit: Link is http://www.hotud.org/component/content/article/37-strategy/2... in case anyone wants to try.

Edit 2: I ran the game on a Win 98 computer. As another user reported above, all that happens is that the game seems to want you to place everyone's starting camels, then at some point it starts making bizarre "oops" sound samples in response to whatever you do.

Version 1.0.0.2 seems to lock up every game. The first time an opponent scores a route the game stops and says "veronica's turn score route or continue."

Am I doing something incorrectly?

Now I see the other comment mentioning this. Whoops.

AI is the hardest to rate because it is relative to the skill of the player who plays the AI.

True.
However, the DoW website has an Elo rating, so we can get some objective data:
Beginners start with a rating of 1200.
1400 is pretty good, 1600 is expert, 1800 is the rating of the best players.
The AI is 900.

It's so bad, that if you quit a game in progress, they punish you by having the AI replace you - if it wins, you get the rating points. It never does.

Giving this AI 2 stars would be generous. 4 is outright ridiculous.

Setup like this for the four player game.

Known issue--Sometimes the AI will not allow legal placement of tiles (squares) or leaders (circles) near the bottom of the screen.

Work-around--Refresh screen by changing themes, then changing it back, like this (solution by Mugnaio):
Options >> Apply Theme (fwtwr)
Options >> Apply Theme (kur)

The AI is mentally challenged one-on-one. However when you play multiple computer opponents they are super aggresive and hard to deal with.

The game can be play over the Internet with human and AI players.

I want to teach myself T&E (a game I've had owned unplayed for a while), so I've downloaded this file to my WinXP SP2 home PC. The file that's been dowloaded is called 'tigrisgame-src.tgz', which XP doesn't recognise.

Googling the tgz file extension, it appears to be a compressed archive file of some sort. Can anyone tell me how to unpack the content into something XP will recognise , or (if I'm totally off course here) explain what I need to go to run the game on my PC?

Thanks

You are right Jim. tgz is a compressed file of tar (a file format for archiving). You can extract the original file from it by WINRAR ( http://www.rarlab.com/ )(free download with a trial license similar to winzip, which means you can still use it after trial period but have to live with an annoying popup at startup). WINZIP should be able to extract that file too, but I haven't done that before.

One more note about this file. If you successfully extracted the archive, you will find that there is only one file which has a .jar extension. It is because the program is written in java. You can run it by double clicking the jar file. But it needs java runtime. If you can't run it you have to install java runtime from http://java.sun.com.

Like, I know this is free, so I can't really complain, but holy CRAP this is unfinished. Every single turn it completely bugs out and won't let you put pieces down. Pieces disappear and reappear at random. The enemies will spend several turns in a row losing the same conflict repeatedly.

Unfinished, don't waste your time, people!

Are they actually free??
I have to pay some GTO "coins" to play..

40 "coins" to play VS AI-players in E&T?
What is it all about??

It cost 40 Coins to play with people. Playing with computer/AI is free.

See above instructions.

Games that are added to this list must have:

* AI (artificial intelligence)
* If no AI then be a solitaire puzzle
* Enforce the game rules

Why this list?

1) The primary reason I created this list is so people can learn how to play a board games the way the designer and the publisher intended.

When I was new to modern European board games, pre-boardgamegeek era, I played board games with wrong rules because I did know what I was doing--like I said I was new modern board games. Playing by the wrong rules really changed some games to the point they were not fun to play. When you play a SoftBoard game, all the correct rules are enforced so you can play right.

2) The secondary reason is that I want people to be able to try a game before they buy a copy.

Unlike video games, unless someone you know has a copy and wants to teach it, it is hard to try a game before you buy it.

3) The third reason is that one can practice new strategies for a face-to-face game.

Enjoy,

--Sebastian

Excellent list! Thanks! (Now if only we could search on it like a database.)

Try "Titles Only", one of the options on the bottom right of the GeekList header. Click on the number to get the GL item!

This list exists too! http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/140673/item/2124236#item21...

Kinda similar, but it's all games that can be played online for free (not necessarily with AI).
