I've done a few session reports of games against the AI. I think they're pretty good for learning Hill 218 strategy and they show that the AI can indeed be defeated.

I just wanted to comment on the "over LAN only, not internet" part. If you use some VPN software like Hamachi or something like that, I'm sure you can play over the internet easily.

Easy doesn't seem that bad. It's a good teacher. (Version 1.3; after several losses, I beat the AI 3 out of 4 games playing second, and then once playing first a couple games later.)

The AI is rather weak on this one, but the game experience is great. I wish the graphics were just a tad better. With this much screen real estate it's very easy to confuse them.

Easiest way to get to play aginst the AI is to go directly to http://www.blokus.com/online-game/ and press the Quick Play button on the right hand side. A four player game will be ready to start with you playing blue. To swap (once only per game) with one of the other computer players: select the small arrow alongside the computer name, confirm you want them to leave, click "Take this Seat" and then click "Computer" on your original blue position.

You can play classic turn-based Blood Bowl or in a real-time mode. Also, it states some pretty high requirements (or maybe they are average for today) but my computer is significantly older than todays standard and it is still playable, especially in turn-based mode.

But the only decent way to play is against other people.

One point that has been missed in this section is that you "can" play against a human player online - via Cyanide's excellent BB system. Play a quick match head-to-head, or join a league, set the rules, then go the Cup!.

The A.I is very solid - NO it is not perfect - but with the release of the full game you come to dread facing certain races - mine are the Wood Elves. I posted this in another related thread, but felt it might give you and idea of variance in teams.

**

For years, a couple friends played the game and I'd watch for about 20 minutes, somewhat interested, inevitably they continued to look at charts and figure out best tactics for tackling, blitzing etc. Then there was figuring out odds for rolling dice and this took more time.

It reminded me of reading War & Peace, interesting bits but a real yawner.

Then I played a few games and admitted to them and a few others that I liked the board game, but that it took way too long to play a game - AND more importantly the waiting between turns simply killed me.

So whilst I appreciated and understood the magic that Blood Bowl has, it hovered in my Top 100 (right around 82) only because of I thought the rulebook and design were amongst the best of the genre.

Flash forward to a few months back and I decide to sign up for the Beta Test, and lo and behold I'm in!

I was part of the online beta testing process, which entails playing matches against others on the very solid server and improving my team when a player "leveled up' and earned new skills.

Throw a pass, catch a pass, knock out that goblin, kill that Lizardman, steamroll a dwarf, run with the ball, score a touchdown, have the ref see you commit a foul and OUT you go - all these actions (and more) net you PP points (and some not so much) which apply to help that player gain new skills.

We could only choose between Orcs and Humans, and whilst the Orcs were very cool, I tried unsuccessfully in 14 matches to win a game with a human team.

Then it happened, I was playing my human Iron Maiden's vs an Orc team that had a good 300 pt experience advantage. Due to the "Inducement system" in the Living Rulebook V - this provides rules for balancing teams of different experience.

What that means is prior to the game beginning I received extra cash with which I bought a mercenary (only plays on your team for 1 game), an Apothecary - can be used once per # you have per game to say heal, or perhaps raise a dead character from the grave. Sometimes you win sometimes you lose.

Not only did I score a touchdown - worth a single point (no xp/fg/safety) just a point a score - but I won 3-1. All the work I put into the team started to pay off, and prior to the closing of the Beta, my Phantom Regiment team was 9-0-1.

I admit straight off, I can't stand online gameplay because in my experience there have always been morons that ruined my gaming experience, but I discovered these guys just wanted to play and play they did.

The game is cool because you don't have to roll the dice - yes, you still have to do the tactics, but all the chart work is done for you in an environment that is amazingly fun and has enough variance that you rarely see the same thing twice.

The game has online and offline regular and league play, for me I'm buying it because of the offline play.

You can choose from Turn based - just like the boardgame - where you can set the rules prior to starting a game/season, and even set the timer for say 4 minutes per side.

You can also play real time, which is sort of like madden just you call plays on the fly and really there is no such thing as a huddle.

8 turns in the traditional Igo-Ugo make up one half - and 16 turns make a game.

In it, you create a team and you have multiple options - play a single match, a season, or even a career wherein your lowly team starts off in the lowest level (total of 3 divisions). You will face 10 other teams in your division, and at the end if you play well enough you can get a shot to play for the championship - which if you win - you could move up to the next level.

Naturally, you gain skills to but better skills, better equipment (helmet, shoes, shoulder pads, Gloves) and if your team gains enough notoriety, one of the mega stars of BB might join your team.

Along the way, each different race - lizard, dwarf, elf, orc, goblin, human, demon etc has their own strengths/weaknesses and even special attacks - like the goblin will employ a Troll, and if trying to score - may well run up to the troll and tell him to heave them down field - he "may", or he "might" decide to eat them instead - trolls aren't that smart. 8)

At some point, you'll want to go for the Blood Bowl championship, where teams like the Orkland Raiders and Darkside Cowboys await you and their all-star cast.

***

Goblins are easy pickings - until they place three trolls on the front line. Their tough hombres but are prone to "play stupid" and just stand there. Your best tactic is to eliminate goblins quickly - watching out for chainsaw and ball and chain wielding goons, so you can take advantage of them in the 2nd half.

Chaos are some nasty critters. Hardened and they normally employ a minotaur on the front line. Tactically they have a couple surprises - like "possessing" my star Qb while he was down and making him attack his own Catcher. Sneaky!!

Dark Elves - quick and a couple of the "women" are downright mean. They tend to move around the board quickly and can cause chaos if not prepared for their onslaught.

Skaven - these guys have some serious speed, and normally employ some huge monsters on their team. Bashing them does help slow down their onslaught.

Wood Elves - Holy canolies!. These guys are the Joe Montana of passers, with the grace of Barry Sanders. Dodge over around and through your line nimbly with few failed dodge rolls. Accurate passing with some downright "thread the needle" moments, expect a high scoring affair where the last team with the ball on the pitch wins.

****

There are tweaks available to the A.I, and with those, this game really has a fresh and wonderful sense of fun to it. Yes, this game owes a ton to it's sister board game, and for good reasons, There is enough diversity to keep me entertained for hours on end, playing through a tournament trying to survive and build up SP's to level my players.

Overall, I'm hooked on the game.

NOTE:
A new Legendary edition is on the way, so if your looking for a PC game that is faithful to the original board game, do yourself a favor and buy it now!

2 Star is definitely the level for this.

The only way the AI will beat you is with lucky rolls, it won't try for a touchdown in the last turn if its risky, it will always just cage up, even if there is no point.

Each race is played exactly the same, it tries dodges with players that in general shouldn't dodge, and does so in its first or second move causing turnovers.

This game is ok, and a pretty good representation of the board game, but many of the rules are implemented a little bit off from the board game, so it can be frustrating at times.

Also the server can be very flakey when playing multiplayer.

So overall a good game, but not perfect.

As R.S. Barker mentioned there is a legendary edition coming out, so wait for it, it will have all the races (except chaos dwarves).

I also recently got the PSP version and have played the DS version as well. I wonder if they all have the same AI. The PSP version set to Medium difficulty is definitely a challenge for me.

This is absolutely superb. If you have troubles with the installation, as the README says, e-mail Keldon. He answers, and is helpful! Don't skip this if you have a slight problem installing it.

Okay got it done. Apparently it is because I neglected to run the GTK file.

Once I actually hit the run button etc. on the GTK file, then reopened the desk top icon, we were off to the races.

Awesome!

Agree that this game and version is way cool. Keldon is the man - his Race for the Galaxy version blew me away too. Only thing I'd say for the above rating for Blue Moon is that the AI is way better than a 3. I can beat most games no problem; and I agree that the AI here is fierce. I'd put it more at a 4 or a 5 than a 3. Again; kudos to Keldon. Please do more!

You should also mention the other computer version of Borderlands: "Lords of Conquest" (Electronic Arts, 1986) that can be played either through DOSBox (PC version) or through a Commodore 64 eumlator.

I would rate the AI: ***

need to use DOSbox if you want to play it in windowed moded and not full screen.

Instructions by the author:
...
Your first question is `Do you want a specific random seed?'. If you say yes to this, you are asked for a number, and if after playing the game you want to start another one with exactly the same starting conditions you can do so by using the same number again.

Next you choose the number of players and your colour, and then you have the option of either selecting your bikes' initial move factors or accepting a completely random choice by the computer. When selecting your own you will first choose whether you want Bike 1 to use 3 or 4 factors and then input the individual factors for each bike. In each case you need to input only 3 out of 4 or 2 out of 3 - the computer will produce the last one automatically.

From then on it's just a matter of reading the other players' moves and responding to prompts for your own moves. The program pauses after every move - just hit any key to nudge it forward. When you input your own, press the RETURN key once you're sure it's correct.

Display: The bicycles are all shown in their proper team colours and positions, and their rank in the team is displayed at their rear with the corresponding number of pixels, i.e. one to four (O.K., I realise that this is not ideal but the size of the screen does rather limit the options, and you soon get used to it!).

The track is represented as a large square with 11 positions on each side, the same as a Monopoly board. START is at the south-west corner, the FINISH line being at the top of position 100 at the north-east corner. SPRINT 1 is the bottom of position 34, SPRINT 2 being 40 positions later, i.e. the same place but no. 74. Each square on the track is numbered, and as the game advances the numbers change upwards by 40 to reflect the real positions of the bicycles. In the case where a square of track is occupied by two or more bicycles in different stages (i.e. bicycles lapping others) the number in the square will always correspond to that of the leading cycle.

When a bicycle is lapped it moves several places towards the outside of the track and acquires a short white line at its rear as a distinguishing mark.

Once eight bicycles have passed the winning post all the scores are presented to show a resumen of the position of each bike in the individual sprints AND the totals for each bike and team, together with a closing remark (sometimes rude) on your performance.

That's it. Good luck!

There is a German version of this, from Koch Media, also with a hidden English interface. The game is available for download and purchase from softunity, an online german software shop. The software is great, AI and Interface both get 5 plus (the AI often overvalues fields, almost like if they give 4 or 5 points per city, even when set to 3 points). Highly customizable in terms of AI, rules and other options. High score lists and nice sound.

AsoBrain is currently not accepting new registrations.

Quote:
Registration stop

When I started this website for the public I had never anticipated so many abusive, disrespecting, whining and dishonest people. If I had knew at the time, I probably never would have started it. Some of you may know I absolutely love programming, creating new stuff and improving other. Unfortunately, since quite a while now, I rarely get the change to do so. I find myself constantly busy with the 'social stuff' which is no fun at all. Much of this can be handled by my lovely voluntary crew but they need proper tools to do so. Since I am always busy with the 'wrong' stuff these tools are also lacking at the moment. With the current rate of 'new' members, we find ourselves unable to handle every complaint, request, question with the attention we would like to.

To give ourselves some time to sort things out I have closed the registration form. Besides that, I have removed all inactive profiles that haven't logged on for at least 6 months. We are now down to about 180.000 active registered members which I think is quite a lot already. To be honest, I don't think this measure will hurt anyone that much. Currently active members can play with their usual names, truly new members are not addicted yet and banned players are, well, not welcome. If anything, I actually think it may create a better experience for our existing members in a short while.

I have not set an end-date for the registration stop. If ever, it will open when the current crew and crew-to-be are settled and have the proper tools to do their jobs.

Greetings, Aso

Administrator

Q: I just told my friends about this website, can they please register?
A: No, we do not make exceptions.

Q: My old account doesn't work anymore, can I get it back?
A: No, if you haven't logged on for at least 6 months you are now a new member.

Q: Can I 'give' one of my accounts to a friend?
A: Yes, but this is at your own responsibility. If your friend gets banned, you will also.

Q: Can I post my profile details on the web so others can use it?
A: No, any account (name+pass) found posted on the web will be removed.

Q: Can I be notified when registration opens again?
A: No, you can check the news once and again

Over a year later, they are still not accepting new registrations. I fear they may never reopen.

Games that are added to this list must have:

* AI (artificial intelligence)
* If no AI then be a solitaire puzzle
* Enforce the game rules

Why this list?

1) The primary reason I created this list is so people can learn how to play a board games the way the designer and the publisher intended.

When I was new to modern European board games, pre-boardgamegeek era, I played board games with wrong rules because I did know what I was doing--like I said I was new modern board games. Playing by the wrong rules really changed some games to the point they were not fun to play. When you play a SoftBoard game, all the correct rules are enforced so you can play right.

2) The secondary reason is that I want people to be able to try a game before they buy a copy.

Unlike video games, unless someone you know has a copy and wants to teach it, it is hard to try a game before you buy it.

3) The third reason is that one can practice new strategies for a face-to-face game.

Enjoy,

--Sebastian

Excellent list! Thanks! (Now if only we could search on it like a database.)

Try "Titles Only", one of the options on the bottom right of the GeekList header. Click on the number to get the GL item!

This list exists too! http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/140673/item/2124236#item21...

Kinda similar, but it's all games that can be played online for free (not necessarily with AI).
