One, I think discards are visible; two, the AI may have random factors that change its play--sometimes no best move exists, and the best thing is to randomly choose among viable options: example, Rock Paper Scissors.

Tall-Walt: Just because I discarded a production world doesn't mean I don't have another one in my hand -- in fact, it seems to me that it makes it more likely that I do.

And if the AI essentially flips a coin sometimes, then it seems to me the randomizer should be the initial seed of the game -- not based on what I've discarded. I've gone back and forth between the two states several times, and it's always consistent that the computer's strategy changes based on what I discarded. I still maintain that it peeks at my hand.

I remember that, I think, now that you mention it: the messy pile vs. the deck?

Randomizers can be seeded any number of ways. It might make sense for a RFTS to randomize based on player discards, so if you do the same thing, it'll do the same thing. This doesn't mean there's unfair communication between the randomizer and the AI.

That said, it's always possible that the implementer made a mistake and considered the discards public. Note that what you start with is public.

I don't think there is any AI in this game, since you are not playing against simulation of human opponent.
It is the game itself what (not who) you are trying to beat.

On the other hand, it's not an easy game to win so you could say
that the deck of cards is "better than average players"...

(philosophical question: what is the AI strength of Minesweeper?)

Oh, I know that ricochetrobots.com is still up. I was just wondering about the braunston.com site.

There are a couple of others, probably using the original code:

http://www.ricochetrobot.com/

http://www.wickle.com/weblog/index.php?content=ricochet

http://rr.nickle.org/

The ricochetrobot.com site has been promising a multiplayer online version for a while and I thought that the braunston site had a link to it.

The web version of Risus RPG designer's solo adventure, Ring of Thieves. A good way to check out the power and flexibility of Risus RPG system that fits on 6 pages of rules.

The developer is making a multi-system gamebook creation app. It allows people to add a story and make an electronic gamebook without programing knowledge. The Gamebook Engine has a web component that allows people to publish game via a web server, Ring of Thieves solo adventure was used to showcase Gamebook Engine's web publishing feature.

Devloper's website >> http://www.freegameengines.org/gamebook-engine/

The Gamebook Engine is a work-in-progress but Ring of Thieves works.

Anyone used TGE to write a gamebook yet? Looks like a pretty robust system, but I'm discouraged by the utter lack of user generated content. There's been no traffic on the forum since 2008 and there's not a single additional title on offer.

I'm interested in using this to write a simple gamebook, but worry that literally noone would see it if I did . . .

I'd personally give the AI strength four stars. While it doesn't act with the forethought of a human, it does act with deadly efficiency which makes a multiplayer game against AI tough to beat.

Hi John,

Thank you for sendint it ; great implementation

I've been playing steadily with it since...

Are you still working on it ?

Namely, the "Late Bronze" variant would be interesting to have, as it offers new developments and ships.

A similar application of "Ra the dice game" would be great, as I believe this one to be at the same level of "addictivity" laugh

I've tinkered with making a Late Bronze Age variant, but real-life coding gets in the way and I can't pay the bills writing free software. I'm sure I'll get around to it eventually though I'll have to puzzle out how to convert the variant to solitaire play. It seems geared more to playing with other people.

If you ever do finish the Late Bronze Age variant, I'd love a copy! =)

Silly they didn't give you the rights to put it out... considering it is the SINGLE player version of the game I'd think it would be even more of an incentive to get it out there (so people could buy it to play with their friends).

I created English versions of the cards. I then overwrote the applicable JPG images in the Karten sub-folder of the installation folder. It's not that difficult to do yourself. Just create 75x120 pixel JPG images for the cards and overwrite the applicable images in the Karten folder. Geekmail me if anyone is interested in getting my images rather than creating the images yourself.

I have just started playing this after getting beaten recently at my very first game with real people. Anyway, a question ... is it possible to amend the turn order for each game randomly?

As the program plays by default, it seems that although I get an equal share of the first set of green cards, I can never get the first turns of red cards....

cheers

A discussion for another thread perhaps, but in any case I'd like to know if the feature in the computer game works for anyone else.

Edit: I found out how it works. Turning on visible scores gets you a pop-up before each turn with a "don't show me this again" checkbox on it. If you check this, it turns the feature off forever regardless of what you choose when setting up a game. It should be possible to restore the pop-up by editing the config file (I went through the somewhat more drastic process of re-installing).

Edit edit: I found out how it really works. There are two separate options to show a popup at the start of your turn and to show the score. The score is displayed on the popup, so if you've disabled the popup thinking it's unnecessary, you're not getting the score.

I have fixed and uploaded San_Juan_fixed.zip. The Aqueduct and Poor House problem was fixed by following Brad Weage (B Weage) instructions.

If you are having problems with Aqueduct and Poor House you need to check the following.

Make sure you are using the sets of images where they are named as above. Do not use the sets of images where Aqueduct is spelled wrong or where Poor House is all one word. Do not use the sets of images with the above corrected names, and then rename the images back to the incorrect titles. (I had heard that someone produced an even sharper set of images which should work just fine if they used the corrected naming.)

If you have the image files with the correct names, and it isn't working, then you have an older version of the file that lets the system know which cards (and how many of each) are in the deck. I think it is called DeckInfo.txt.

Or you have an older version of the EXE. Use the one that allows selection of player position.

I abandoned work on this project a long time ago, as I was just tweaking the VB Code from another BGG user enough to make sure all the game functions and cards worked correctly. (There were only minor problems and the credit for most stuff goes to him.) I have made a few more cosmetic changes where the UI annoyed me. But I never produced a finished install for the selectable-position version as there didn't seem to be much interest at the time.

Is anybody still using this?

Remember that in 2-player games, the governor can use the Library only once during his round, which might lead to some people thinking it wouldn't work correctly.

Exactly, but with this version on a 2 players game you always can use it, not only once

I'm still having the Poor House problem. I've downloaded and unzipped the San_Juan_fixed.zip. The Poor House and Aqueduct cards are spelled correctly in the images files and in DeckInfo.txt. When I start a game, it allows me to choose the number of players as well as my position. What else should I be checking for?

Thanks

Have just download this. If I remember correctly there are two of each image directories (/big and /small), one of each is empty. I copied all the images from the full ones into the corresponding empty ones (though I am not sure if this was necessary).
The programme crashed a few times when it couldn't find a file. I followed the link in the error message and renamed the offending file to what the programe was looking for.

Working fine now and a nice litle programme, thanks

p.s. noticed the aqueduct isn't working properly - have read all the posts properly and downloaded the version linked to above
http://boardgamegeek.com/file/19840/San_Juan_fixed.zip this works properly without the need for renaming files etc!

Games that are added to this list must have:

* AI (artificial intelligence)
* If no AI then be a solitaire puzzle
* Enforce the game rules

Why this list?

1) The primary reason I created this list is so people can learn how to play a board games the way the designer and the publisher intended.

When I was new to modern European board games, pre-boardgamegeek era, I played board games with wrong rules because I did know what I was doing--like I said I was new modern board games. Playing by the wrong rules really changed some games to the point they were not fun to play. When you play a SoftBoard game, all the correct rules are enforced so you can play right.

2) The secondary reason is that I want people to be able to try a game before they buy a copy.

Unlike video games, unless someone you know has a copy and wants to teach it, it is hard to try a game before you buy it.

3) The third reason is that one can practice new strategies for a face-to-face game.

Enjoy,

--Sebastian

Excellent list! Thanks! (Now if only we could search on it like a database.)

Try "Titles Only", one of the options on the bottom right of the GeekList header. Click on the number to get the GL item!

This list exists too! http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/140673/item/2124236#item21...

Kinda similar, but it's all games that can be played online for free (not necessarily with AI).
