[POLLS] 20 Most Anticipated Games of 2012 --- RESULTS POSTED --- 1600+ Votes

Another year has come and gone... and quite a few of last year's most anticipated games (at least for me) made it into production and onto my shelves (1830, Mansions of Madness, Letters from Whitechapel, et. al).

Unfortunately, I think more made it onto the shelves than on the table.

For the last two years I have found a number of great games through this most informal and unofficial process... so, here it is again, back for a third year. As in past years, this will be a two-stage process... a nominations phase and a final voting phase.

BoardGameNews experienced a little turmoil about the time of last year's poll, but ironically their fantastic Gone Cardboard page is back here on BGG just in time for this year's 20 most poll.

In that spirit I would like to once again open nominations for this very in-formal and un-official contest to determine the 20 Most Anticipated Games of 2012.

Nomination Status Updates:
One day left to nominate a game for the 20 Most Anticipated of 2012 --- and status update

Key Dates:
Nominations Open: Sunday, December 11, 2011
Nominations Close: Monday, January 2, 2011
Voting Begins: Tuesday, January 3, 2012
Voting Ends: Saturday, January 14, 2012

Subcategories:
Subcategories will be changed based on the nominations, but tentatively these are the subcategories I expect us to have (feel free to nominate a game for multiple categories):
* Train
* Economic
* Historical
* Political
* Horror
* Science Fiction
* Fantasy
* Wargames
* Expansions
* Original
* Reprint
* Print & Play
* Abstract

Eligibility
Any newly available game or expansion is eligible if it is reasonably expected to ship in 2012. I know, "reasonably" is a fuzzy word... cest la vie.

Nominations
To nominate a game add it to this geeklist. Please add a short note stating why it is anticipated that the game will ship in 2012, and specify one or more subcategories you think it fits. Feel free to suggest new subcategories.

Nomination name
Nominations may not have a BGG entry yet, or you may want to change the nomination name to indicate a specific edition.

To do so, put the nomination name inside of altname tags such as:
[altname]Favorite game - Unnamed expansion[/altname]

To second a nomination thumb its entry.

The top 50 nominations will be entered into the final vote for the top 20.

Voting
At the conclusion of nominations I will create a poll with the top 50 nominations.

Reprints vs. new editions
Reprints of already released games are not eligible, but new editions are. As with many things in the gaming industry this isn't a crisp line as to how many changes are necessary to distinguish a reprint from a new edition, but several factors to consider are artwork and components.

When nominating a new edition, mention why you think this one is different from the previous edition (not necessarily in detail, something as short as "new components" is sufficient).

Long out-of-print reprints
I would prefer to include games that have been generally unavailable for several years and are receiving a reprint. Again, this is a bit of a fuzzy area, but as an example, if Warhammer Quest or Hero Quest were to be reprinted without changes they would be eligible.

Multiple releases
It is not uncommon for a game printing to have multiple release editions for the EU and US markets (such as Mayfair/Lookout Games and JKLM/Z-Man). Many games are released and available at Essen and then (sometimes much later) released in the US with great anticipation.

For many, I think the "buzz" surrounding an Essen release combined with the general unavailability heightens the anticipation.

I would prefer to include these releases and let the voting determine how anticipant people are.

Limited initial release
I would also prefer to include games that had a limited initial release and are preparing for a full re-release. Again, this will be a grey area, but one example I would point to is the approach that Treefrog, Winsome, GMT and other publishers take with typically small pre-order releases that sell out quickly and receive a reprint if they perceive that the game was well received.

What is a small or limited release? Again, another gray area that we'll have to deal with as it comes up, as I'm sure a small release for Hasbro is quite different for a small release from most publishers here on BoardGameGeek.

This would also include games that might have had reviewer copies released, but are not yet generally available for purchase.

Other
If the particular game is part of a series (such as the Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game) I may combine multiple nominations into one entry for final voting if it appears as if the series is anticipated rather than a specific release in the series (this was done for the Dominion expansions in 2010).

Also, if there isn't any justification for why a particular game is anticipated to ship in 2012 I may removed it from final voting. This only reason I state this is to separate anticipated 2012 releases from wishlist items. Yes, it would be nice if Hasbro/Avalon Hill reprinted Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit but at this point I don't believe there is any reason to anticipate their release in 2012.

However, in this respect I would prefer to be inclusive rather than exclusive.

Anything else??? We'll wing it...

You awake suddenly in the middle of an abandoned sanitarium. You are slightly drugged and have no idea how you've gotten there. A voice in your head speaks: I can help you get out, but first you're going to need to locate three items...

I'm a sucker for sanitarium themed games (rpgs, video, board, card, etc).

I'm a Kickstarter Backer, and the estimated delivery for Kickstarter copies is March of 2012.

Hello!
mbmbmbmbmb
Blood Bowl 4th?/5th? edition???

I must admit that GW have not said a word about a new edition but...

- In 2012 it is 25 years since the first edition.
- There have been released a computer version. (Blood Bowl: Legendary Edition)
- FFG have released a Blood Bowl card game. (Blood Bowl: Team Manager – The Card Game)
- FFG have released their other highly rated game when it turned 20. (Space Hulk (third edition))

The ground seem to be prepeared. I'm waiting with anticipation.

GMT is printing a deluxe edition of Circus Train once the PS500 gets to 500... sure its currently about 140 supporters shy... but if enough people pledge their Christmas money in the first quarter it could theoretically be published in time for Christmas 2012! Couldn't it?

Wow. Fantasy Flight is really leveraging some great long out-of-print titles.

To me, this is the epitome of the Ameritrash genre.

I'm excited to see what FFG will do with this one... and I'm still waiting for them to announce a reprint of Warhammer Quest.

I understand the parts have just arrived from the printers in China and have seen some early parts - they look really high class, (check out the huge gunship mats). Proper SciFi space combat that's been in "development" for 9 years (!)

I am most looking forward to rolling the dice and going "pew pew!", in later expansions/rules "requesting reinforcements from people playing the game on a different table", sounds cool.

The game was funded via Kickstarter to be published by Knight Works, LLC

My favorite dice euro and the best western theme game I have played to date... Unlike most dice euros which are primarily focused on worker placement with resource collection, players leverage their dice to perform actions which help to move them further along towards two possible game end conditions (one which is based on building out a certain number cities and towns within a player's established and opponent sought after territory map and the other being a victory point race). Add to this some fun and thematic card play options and this game really has something for every type of gamer.

Full disclosure: I was a Kickstarter Backer and did provide some late stage developement support for this game after it was launched on Kickstarter.

Semi-cooperative.

At Essen 2011 there was still only the prototype ... got an explanation and the story behind that. There are several gaming groups testing and improving this, giving feedback to the designer via a special blog. Game system and mechanisms truly unique and looking great.

This is another P500 from GMT and currently sits at 457. With the sesquicentennial of most major battles still in the future, I'm sure GMT is keeping a close eye on all their ACW titles.

However, I'm still on the fence on this one. Rebel Raiders looked like a different approach to the impact of naval operations in the ACW, and I'm not sure if I'm up for anything that would feel like just another naval simulation.

I'm wondering how innovative the approach in this one might be, and so what I anticipate most is reading the various reviews before deciding to get this one.
