Sometimes, the self-advertising on a game box is enough to warn me away - permanently - from that game. I can no longer include the infamous CardChess, which was famous for self-promotion without actually telling you anything about the game. Here on this list, add games that sing their own praises without telling you anything at all about the game... these are likely to be shelf-warmers if you plunk down the money.

Trillon, or Trillion.

From the box copy:

Trillõn (pronounced Trill-yõn), the game with a trillion faces.

Trillõn is a game unlike any you have seen or played before. It's different in many ways, but most of all, because its unique game board can be arranged in more than 1,000,000,000,000 different combinations. Trillõn is so unique that it's patented! A destined classic, its' brilliant design will outlast the test of time.

Trillõn's board is made up of 100 blocks that are a different color on each side, allowing the board to be arranged in more combinations than you can imagine. Designing the board is half the fun! Add some of your own optional rules to the already mind-boggling equation, and you are in for nearly infinite excitement.

Trillõn is a lighthearted game of math and counting and visualization. It's easy to play and offers both right and left brain stimulation. This is a game where the journey is as much fun as reaching the destination. A game of both luck and strategy. Be the first to maneuver your way across the board and you win!

Trillõn is a game of never-ending possibilities. If you started playing right now and never stopped playing for the rest of your life, you would not even come close to having played Trillõn in all of its nearly incomprehensible combinations. So, come on, you better hurry up and play! Time is ticking away....

Now... when I saw that in the game store, I immediately put it down and backed away slowly. I guessed that I was supposed to be impressed by how many board combinations there are, and that the most fun I would have with the game is trying to count the different ways to arrange the blocks. Fortunately, the game did not bite...

Friendo

Not quite the box cover, but the first page of the "rules" book is itself a self-promotion about how this is UNLIKE other games. Unlike other games, you pay more attention on other people's turns than your own. Unlike other games, you can't go it alone to win. Unlike most games, this has a unique scoring system. Unlike most games, there are no right answers. And so on... leading to "This makes Friendo the newest concept in Q&A gaming."

Thankfully the makers put the rules on the game's site... and again, I backed away slowly...

Well, if you go to the webpage you'll find this:

VIKTORY allows you to legitimately "Conquer the World" in 1-3 hours- without using artificial game-ending devices to prevent the game from going on forever.

The cleverly designed "snowball effect" in VIKTORY leads to critical "uh-oh" moments where one player suddenly seems dominant, and the other players must either work together to beat him back, or else face destruction one-by-one.

There's no limit to the number of "actions" a player can take in a turn- VIKTORY allows you to flex your strategic muscle to the maximum extent you are able, without setting limits that make you compromise between growth and aggression.
