There are several variants on the Elder Sign forums to make it harder.

another great game from DVG , depicting US air warfare in vietnam conflict. its the era of jets with less advanced aircraft and weapons against a less advanced enemies compared to Hornet Leader CAO.

if you love vietnam war and modern aviation and simple solo games, then this game is for you.

i rate this game's solo rplayability as

not perfect score because this game need MORE campaign

This one runs a bit longer - and is a bit more complex - than the standard States of Siege title, but the narrative is so strong and the game play so compelling, it brings the series to a whole new level.

Very replayable too due to the variety of characters and card draws - easily worth 25+ plays.

Highly recommended!

due to its difficulty , frustration, challenge and complexcity , i have to rate this excellect solo-capable game as

It is designed to play solo as well as with two. An algorithm drives the actions of the anti-American forces and the player controls the pro-US. It is quite good, although advanced players will want to use the rules that make it easier for the opponent to start jihads.

Funny, ultimately, I bought the game because of your videos review of LotR...

But even after watching your vids, my fear was that the game might feel a little to dry (which is often the case with games by Knizia), but this one is not, you are really a group of Hobbits going to Mordor to destroy the ring. The expansions are also quite good, particularly Battlefield, which is my favorite as it introduce the other character of the company...

It is a very thematic game with a really great mechanic.

I have played this so many times solo I can't count. And every time it is different.
One of my all-time favourites.

I haven't played this one in quite a while, but that doesn't mean I don't think it's an excellent game.

I agree about the game being quite thematic, and capable of evoking the feel of desperation as the road ahead is long and your strength (cards) diminish all too quick. The ring mechanic is also well implemented.

I do hope to get this to the table soon. I also have all the expansions, but have yet to try them. I want to have a better handle on the base game before I do so.

Never pulled the trigger due to price. Is this better than the previous ones in the series? Word on the street is yes.

Glad to see this one on the list - only 1 member of my gaming group has made the effort to learn and play this release, so I'll be having this game on the table solo quite a bit I do imagine.

Starting with just 1 player to learn the mechanics, then moving to the two-tusker solo rules, then I'll run with Joel's earlier recommendation to play all four sides in a session.

Very much looking forward to it...

I recently got "The Lighthorsemen". If you haven't seen it, it's right up there with Galipoli. The cav...err, I mean Light Horse charge against Beersheeba is pretty impressive to say the least. I'm no expert on WW1 so can't attest to it's historical accuracy. Only thing I thought strange was use of British tanks in the first battle scene. That didn't seem right but after checking into it, yes they actually deployed 6 of them during the "Second Battle of Gaza".

I'd point out that there is already an excellent, fully featured Java implementation called Realmspeak, that is technically capable of hosting online play, but is a widely used format for both learning the game and easy, setup-free solo play.

....but yes, a properly ported iOS version would also be nice.

First one I thought of.

Easily good for >25 plays due to the fully-flexible board and scenario construction.

Hell - I could probably get >25 plays out of a single scenario.

And all this with fully open information and zero luck!

Surely not!
A solo series comprises of 8 games play one each of EIK you've got 24 right there then there are various puzzles on the forum and card combinations before you touch the expansions.

Well, I learned with the first edition rules (should get the microbadge some day9 and it wasn't that bad.
There are two main problems:
a) A lot of new concepts that need time to get used to it.
b) You _have_ to "roleplay" the rules: they _are_ a bit unclear here and there, but that doesn't mean you can't play. Mostly, you are unsure about some nuances and this will destroy your game only if you are too anal about getting it _right_.

Big tip: don't analyse the language of the rules too much (some wargamers seem to love Exegesis or are just lawyers). Go with the "flow".

2nd Ed. rules are rather good and there are a couple of _really_ good player aids around that will make everything easier (specially all the rules as small cards, arrange thematically).

It's not a difficult game, really.

LancerDeuce's video series was an enormous help to me.

I had tried with the first edition rules several times, and just couldn't make it work. I agree with Pablo, when you make sense of it, it's not a difficult game. It just took me forever to make sense of it. Love the game, though.

I know you can play this online instead, but I LOVE playing solitaire against the robotic "AI" with the physical game.

I'm considering buying the second expansion, just for the added variety in solitaire play!

Yes, I just finished my 9th solo game and finally won after 8 crushing defeats. All with the easy difficulty. In my win, the robot had the Ancient Race start world while I had the Doomed World. The key really was that for most of the game the Robot's economy was stuck at 0, so whenever Consume came up he never scored VPs. So I never played the Produce action at all, and simply relied on building a 12-card tableau.

That one win really has me psyched to play more frequently now.

In my very limited experience, the Ancient Race has been the weakest performing AI start world. Getting those robot trade die rolls when its economy is at 0 is very important. In the couple games that my final score was close to the robots, it was because of fortunate trade die rolls.

Also, I really like starting with the Doomed World. Especially if I start with or get a high VP world that has a useful ability right off the bat.

I still have a lot of experience to gain before I can contribute much to the strategy discussions about this game.

After you get the symbols on the mat memorized the game plays pretty quickly. I've never understood why people complained about this so much.

Overall it's well designed and challenging enough to keep you coming back. I've logged lots of solo games for this and it's still fun.

This game looks interesting, read through the online rules and does not look too complicated. I've been looking for a nice small footprint solitaire game that is quick to setup and teardown. I just may have to get this one. Anyone care to comment on its replay value? I've found other games such as Ambush to be nice the first time through but not so much when replayed.

i find this game easier to setup and play.. even easier than Hornet Leader / Phantom Leader..

and the narrative value , if you love scifi adventures, is great..

the replay value are awesome given the multiple monster type and campaign/advanced rules..

all in all its a great solitaire game on par with my favorite the hornet leader Carrier Air Ops

Agreed - this is a great game that provides fantastic narrative. Lots of replayability, and lots of variants in difficulty that means you can play as easy or difficult a game as you like.

My personal favourite is battling against the man eating plants on the jungle planet Denobula... !

For one reason or another, I haven't played this for a while... and am now going to have to dig this out and play it some more

Small box, very portable, lots of tension and excitement, and just the right mix between luck and strategy. The cards and the dice can screw you, but there's always these few things you could have done differently. Very awesome.

I've just gotten back into this with a couple of plays over the last few days. While I've enjoyed the gameplay, theme, and challenge, I do see why many people do not enjoy this.

I only have 6 solo plays in, but I don't see getting tired of the base game soon.

I didn't expect to enjoy this, as I'm not a huge card-based game person, but it found a sweet spot. As others have said, it combines luck with strategy. Most importantly right now, in the confined house I share with 2 kids and a wife, it fits on my desk and the play time is manageable. I would love to breakout Arkham Horror more often, but I don't have the time or the space anymore (someday though!).

I'm up to about 20 plays right now, and I've just started to look into the expansions. This one is a keeper as long as my space restrictions apply!

It still uses a lot more space than I expected it to, though.

Denny, there are quite a few solo games with high replayability, but I only listed the ones I thought had an addictive quality and replayability, and that hadn't already been listed (like Elder Sign, Space Infantry, and Hornet Leader).

Looking through this list I was pretty confused....
Still playable after 25 YEARS ???

Airborn in my pocket?

What an optimistic prediction O.o
As I read on I pictured I must have misunderstood something here...

*g*

My game for the 25 year list would have been "Patience" *sigh*.

Well, I've come back to Book 01: The Warlock of Firetop Mountain after nearly 30 years, so maybe 25 years isn't too extreme...
