About three years ago (about the same time I entered grad school) I realized that I owned a lot of wargames but played very few of them. Why? Long playing times, complex, 20-page rulebooks and murky mechanics. I started to move toward euros, with their shorter playing times, ease of finding opponents and ease of teaching. This year, though, I was overjoyed. A few wargame designers tore a page out of the Euro design guide and went to work, producing games that combined the elegant simplicity of the euros with the asymmetrical design of the wargame. The results were beautiful games with very shallow mechanical learning curves that were still enjoyable to play. In short, wargames without all the crap that makes wargames such a frustrating passion. My basic requirements:
-Less than three hours to play between two experienced players
-Less than 200 physical components to futz around with (counters, blocks, whatever; cards only count against this if they are each unique, like the event cards in Paths of Glory)
-Less than 15 minutes to set up
-Less than 10 pages of rules
-Less than 20 minutes to teach the basic mechanics of the game
-Minimal rules "exceptions" (i.e. little need to consult the rulebook after teaching. For instance, Paths of Glory is a great game that probably has only about 4 pages of mechanical rules; all the other 20-some odd pages seem to be devoted to "exceptions.")
Add any more games that meet this criteria that you think of.

Richard Sival's freshman offering is an archtypal game of this class. 3 hours to play, 9 pages of rules including the FAQ and play aid, 4 assymetrical sides who have a chance of winning to the end and great bits to boot. The exception rules consist of one paragraph about how to pass the countries around, one about eased victory conditions, one about Russian garrisoning East Prussian conquests, and one about Prussia winning by offense. As a bonus, one of the only wargames where the random event cards will make you laugh.

This game was the inspiration for this list. 11 pages of rules including design notes, terrain effects all printed on the board, one rule exception (the pontoon bridge), and a workable solitaire scenario. Does life get any better? Also works great for PBEM.

I agree with alot that you have to say being a veteran wargamer myself. I've played alot of the wickedly complex, time consuming games, and this one is a good one for short fun play. It will last about 4 hours, but is fun and to the point. Easy to learn and VERY close run for both players.....nice list...

Easy to learn, hard to master.

I usually manage to play a game in an hour or two. The rules are easy to learn (you might need five minutes for the slow learners) and the game mechanic is unique and fun.

A war themed card game that's quite neat actually and you won't have to sell your organs to afford booster packs since there aren't any.

I have the English version but might consider trading it for a german plus something else if someone feels an urge to try it out.

This game definitely meets your requirements:

-Less than three hours to play: In many cases it will play a lot quicker
-Less than 200 physical components to futz around with: Most scenarios will only use a fraction of this
-Less than 15 minutes to set up: Sure
-Less than 10 pages of rules: It has ten pages of rules
-Less than 20 minutes to teach the basic mechanics of the game: No problem
-Minimal rules "exceptions": It has a very "tight" system

It is also the greatest wargame around and a nice introduction to the full ASL game.

I've played MW: Korea a few times and, while they're not as gorgeous as Eurogames, they are fast and have enough depth to appeal to seasoned wargamers.

This game meets your criteria:

- Playing time: less than two hours

- Component count: 30 units max, ~15 counters, 4 map sections, a handful of dice

- Setup time: minimal time to physically place the maps and units, plus 15-20 minutes total to review the map, select one's units (non-historical scenarios only), and deploy units, however I regard this latter time as actual gameplay rather than mindless setting up

-Less than 10 pages of rules: maybe 12 or so, but they are small with lots of diagrams and some repetition

-Less than 20 minutes to teach the basic mechanics of the game: correct

-Minimal rules "exceptions" (i.e. little need to consult the rulebook after teaching: correct - some units have special abilities on their stat cards, but these don't always come into play and aren't complicated anyway

The *Front series of games are all great in their own way, but hidden inside of MedFront is a great little game that meets your criteria, namely The Spanish Civil War.

About 20 blocks per player, rules around the 10 page mark. Familiarity with the full on rules of EastFront helps, but is not necessary - the game is self-contained.

And it sets up and plays in under 2 hours. MedFront is ok as a game, but the SCW makes it worth owning IMO.

Here, hopefully, starts the rebirth of the high competition, low complexity hex and counter wargame. 1 map (with TEC and CRT printed on it), 280 counters, 14 pages of rules (if you count the front and back cover), play time under 4 hours, and very easy to learn and teach. As an added bonus, very playable solitaire. There's lots under the hood here, with "soft" zones of control, the very high movement capability of the mechanized units, a nearly bloodless combat results table, and the twisty HQ-chit pull system all coming together to produce a great (but always different) gaming experience.

FREE print-and-play half-hour-lunch game. Division-to-corps level. U.S. starts with 6 units - Germans with 9. 6 hexes from Our River to Namur.

Simple hex-and-counter mechanics, but with significant chrome historical details ... like the German player's Waffen-SS Ruthlessness (and consequential GI Rage) rule.
