This geeklist shows my analysis of the results of 2011 Geek Users Poll.

My thanks to all those who participated and commented.

Feel free to contribute with your own analysis and comments.

This is the (semi-offical) Geek user poll. I’ve run this twice previously, once in October 2008 and then again in February 2010. It isn’t an annual poll, I guess it is running about every 18 months. You can see the 2010 poll HERE and analysis of the answers HERE. Nearly 3000 users responded.

Before running this poll I asked Aldie if he wanted to make any changes and he suggested a couple. I also asked users for feedback in this thread. As a result I amended a number of questions, removed quite a few and added in some others.

I'm hoping that Aldie is going to be able to supply me with a detailed file of the answers to these poll questions (with user identities removed). This will allow for some much more complex analysis of the poll across questions - e.g. what age groups play what type of games and what nationality has a great impact on, etc.

This item title is a link to the poll thread. At this point nearly 4000 users have taken part in the poll, about a thousand more than the 2010 poll and about six times as many as took part in the 2008 poll.

3000 of those users also answered the 'supplementary' and 'opinion' polls that were in the same thread as the main poll. It seems there cannot be too many questions for most of us!

The polls are still open, so if you want to contribute your views you still can.

In the following analysis I talk about 'us'. That is the 'us' that answered the poll, which is arguably representative of that portion of the BGG-viewing public who are both registered and answer polls. For the purposes of this analysis I'm going to treat this as being representative of the views of the entire population of BGG users. Which is probably wrong.

Sex
The vast majority (94.4%) of us are male. This has remained constant since the last poll.
2.4% of respondents said that they would have selected "other" rather than male or female if that had been an option.

Age
The biggest group of us (40.5%) are in the 26-35 age range and 76% are 26-45.

Just under 1% are 18 or younger
9% are 25 or younger (11% last time)
15.5% are 46 or older (13% last time)
Just under 3% are 56+ (though there are probably more gamers of that age who don't frequent The Geek and polls)

So we seem to be an aging population. Not a great indication for the future of boardgames/RPGs, though this should be taken in context of the large increase in the number of people who took the poll (which is presumably related to the increase in the number of active users of this site).

National Identity

So where are we from? This question has been asked a lot of times on this site and answered a few times. The USA geeks dominate, that is clear. Here are the results (with major differences from last time in brackets).

52.5% USA (55% last time)
8% UK
8% Canada (7%)
4% Spain (5%)
3% German
3% Australia
2.5% Netherlands (2%)
2% Belgium (1%)
1.3% Brazil (0.5%)
1% Sweden (2%)
1% Finland
1% Greece
1% Poland
1% Italy
1% Portugal (0.5%)
1% Denmark
0.7% France (1%)
0.7% New Zealand (1%)
0.7% Hungary (0.5%)
0.5% Norway
0.5% Russia (0.3%)
0.4% Switzerland (0.3%)
0.3% Israel (0.5%)
Other countries were 0.3% or less.

Only 5 users responded from the whole of Africa (but there was only 1 last time)
Of the most populous countries in the world, China had 5 users and India had 2. Last time they had only a single response from each.

The actual question asked was "What is your main country of residence", while last time it was "Where are you from?" (which left some interpretation to the respondents). 91% of us were born in their main country of residence.
