At the end of 2012 I want to have reduced my total un-played games by 100. This means keeping up with new purchases as well.

I had the same goal in 2011 and even though I played 230 new games, I failed miserably by only reducing my un-played games by a total of 11. Last year's List: Hooah! Attack on my unplayed in 2011

Below is a list of some of my un-played games.

I will enter them as they are played, with a rating and notations designed for my own purposes. Most of my ratings are based on multiple plays.

Grand Total of ALL games & expansions played for the first time in 2012: 74

My favorites so far: Eminent Domain,Power Grid: First Sparks, Egizia, Outpost, Kingdom Builder, Lords of Waterdeep, Glen More, Mondo, Carcassonne: Hunters & Gatherers, Royal Palace, Deadwood, Furstenfeld, Lords of Waterdeep, Mage Knight: Board Game

I also Enjoy a Lot: Key Largo, Alcatraz: The Scapegoat,

Favorites of my Gaming Friends (input from around 50 throughout the year): Eminent Domain, Ascension: Storm of Souls, Power Grid: First sparks, Outpost, Lords of Waterdeep, Kingdom Builder, Mondo, Alcatraz: The Scapegoat, Mage Knight: Board Game,

Also enjoyed, but eventually has seen less table action:

NOTE: As of early May we decided to unexpectedly move out of state which won't be completed until early fall. In the meantime I am running numerous game auctions, and although won't have time to play many new games, will be reducing (hopefully drastically) my games owned, including some un-played.

The 6th player is really a bonus for our group. And according to the literature, the number of players is unlimited. You just keep adding an expansion pack ($12 each).

Rules' translation here on BGG under expansion Pack A. Both expansions hard to find.

Fun game. The only game I own that comes close is Igloo which is also a hearing game. Players drop cubes into a tower and through listening, determine which of 8 floors they landed upon. There are 2 murder victims in the tower and points are scored when suspects are identified.

It is listed as a "Memory" game. I don't enjoy it as a memory game and it doesn't have to be one. In fact I made a player's aide to help players decide which suspects to call on which floor. (It's a reusable sheet when laminated and I'll post the file when I get a chance.)

I think it is a better game when I can make an intelligent guess--and a guess it is because it is hard enough deciding which of the floors a potential "suspect" landed upon. There are still lots of surprises and lots of mistakes.

I like this game as long as it is not a memory game which I think makes it too chaotic especially with 5, 6 players--which is my preference for the number of players. If you play with 2 or 3, as a memory game might be better.

Type: Children's card game

I rate children's games according to how excited I am to play with the appropriately aged child.

Poor quality playing cards, so stiff they are hard to shuffle. I was enticed to buy because of the box graphics which are the best part of this game.

It says ages 6+, but 4-5 year olds can match colors. The length of the game might be a little long for them, so adjust that by taking out some colors.

For very new gamers it does give an opportunity to start teaching some very rudimentary strategy involving timing for use of the wild cards & search-the-deck cards. Nevertheless, the winner is pretty much based on the luck of the draw. It is overpriced at $12.

Type: race, dexterity

I rate children's games according to how excited I am to play them with appropriately aged children.

Another well constructed, quality children's game from HABA, with a nifty magnetic board & police car, nice sized wooden dice, and even a pleasant, European police siren used at various times throughout the game.

Play is simultaneous for thief & policeman. The policeman controls his patrol car which moves smoothly and beautifully around the magnetic board, trying to discover the thief's locations, while the thief is throwing dice to break 6 lock combinations. Great as a two player game, works well for more--everyone takes turns as thief & policeman. When playing with 4, I think it works nicely as a team game by helping to turn over location markers & moving cards. Children should be close to the same age for this dexterity/race game.

I rated it slightly under a 7 because even though I think the car movement is fantastic, I think some 6 yr olds might have trouble managing the car. If I am wrong, the game will go to a 7.

A very original game and another delight from HABA.

Type: Auction

An auction game that seems a little too redundant with 60 game auctions and 18 development turns. Then scoring and the game is over.

I wish the column markers were a brighter color. The board is not as attractive as I thought it would be, and it is also confusing . The game took a lot longer than expected.

End game scoring was easier when one player's connected Bonus Fields and Factories were turned over, scored, and then removed.

This game will only occasionally make it to the table. All those auctions were just a little exhausting.

Interesting mechanic for the shoot out. End of game ties are decided cleverly--they have a final shot out with no restrictions on the number of bullets, unlike the rest of the game. The theme is enjoyable as well as the graphics that accompany it. Rules are easy, setup fast, and play progresses quickly. The dice do not overwhelm the game. It is a light game everybody liked.

Edit: Also the railroad coming into town and making adjacent properties more valuable adds some depth to the game.

My rating: 8.5

Type: Expansion

I rated this slightly higher than the base game because it adds a highly desirable 5th player which makes the game more playable for our group. The rules remain the same. Just an additional resource is added, and some extra components relating to the new resource.

Unfortunately the new civilization cards which are shuffled into the old cards, are on different card stock with a slightly different off-color back as well. Since the cards are face down beside the board, I am disappointed players know whether an old or new card is to be turned over next.

To accommodate the new resource, a smaller, new game board is placed over one section of the old game board. This new board is dislodged easily and there were complaints about this.

In my first game I concentrated on the new decoration resource, and by turning in double decorations for double cards. I purchased only a few huts going mostly for the bonus multiples in food, people, and culture symbols. Everyone else continued to play a balanced game as was the usual approach in the base game. I was left in their dust, so it looks as though a balanced game is still the better approach.

Certainly another player lengthens the game, which isn't a problem for me. Those who like the base game will probably like the expansion. All I played with want to play again.

Type: city building

A tile laying game with hints of Glen More with rivers and roads/paths, but they are very different games.

What I liked most about the game is the 3-D effect of the buildings. The tiles are thick and as floors stack a nice dimensional city rises in front of my eyes. The tiles unfortunately are not holding up too well since the paper is separating. Nice wood disks though.

Zoning and the direction of building is a nice thematic touch. Role cards add interest, but the strategy and jocking of the game revolves around the scoring mechanism.

I would be more enthusiastic about buying the game if the tiles seemed sturdier and a little easier to read--some important graphics on the tiles are so small they are difficult for everyone to see, especially since the city might "grow away" from some of the players. The tiles had such an unfinished look, and such a home-computer-printed-and-then-glued-on look that I mistook the game for a prototype.

Lasts less than hour yet seems a little long for what it is--repetitive.

Very much enjoyed this attractive, worker placement game. Finishes were close.

There is some luck in the draw of the cards, and so far there seems to be one start that is always successful ..dividing all your servants initially between parade & staircase. Also the game is hard to win if you don't get additional servants, especially when servants are placed on the higher scoring outer edge of the courtyard for the duration of the game. From then on it is a race to see who can get which nobles.

I always enjoy boards that vary with each setup, and this is one. There can be some brain freeze especially near the end when your servants are numerous, majorities come into play, and multiple Nobles can be gained.

My gaming buddies love this. It didn't appeal to me but I admit it was better than I expected.

Attractive board, plays in an hour or less, simple goal (get 2 pts.), cards easily understood. I enjoyed the unusual and unique card deck compilation--I played with four and we paired off with each pair choosing several decks. Decks of a pair were mixed together and the paired players draw only from their deck--Yet, they are opponents. It is everyone for himself!

The winner was unexpected (and I was told that is not unusual)--but the loser wasn't--that was me. When someone heartlessly attacked me with a huge hit I went after them with wicked vengeance and failed in every attack and each attack was turned back on me, and I died! Ordinarily I'd back off & lick my wounds, but I was in a rush to meet some guests so I did my best to ruthlessly slaughter the other (even using rocks), but to no avail.

Massive reading and luck of the draw do not endear this game to me.

Played at the store.

This didn't feel like a new, refreshing game to me. Just a combined variation of several other games. I feel some cards are really overpowered and unbalance the game. Killing the first enemy and getting special cards, is an important feature of the game, yet it is easy to get locked out and never draw a special card, although their is another avenue to winning. Opponents can un-expectantly get killed, even if they are in the lead--if this happens early, they sit and watch the others play. That can be a boring half hour for them.

The cards are interesting, easy to understand, and multi-use.

We all turned down the option of playing it a second time that night. All but myself volunteered that they would play it again sometime but no one sounded particularly enthusiastic. I suppose I could be coerced into playing again, but only because it is reasonably short.

I thought the board a visual delight--probably the best part of the game for me since it is pretty much the standard Euro, worker placement game. It is a tight game, meaning not much room for mistakes. It is easy to block others out of important actions yet there is no compensation for turn order, which rotates to the left. I felt the number of cubes was skimpy, and two colors so close together is unfortunate. The bonus action marker is a nice twist and very cut throat.

I rate children's games according to how excited I am to play with the appropriately aged child.

I played this with a 5-year old and we had a blast. It is tiddly winks with a twist. I usually don't like motorized toys but this one I found appealing, and the rolling eyes & opening mouth delighted the child. I really appreciate the very easily inserted/removed battery (without the use of screws)for storage.

Rules are simple and straight forward. However planning ahead is essential. The rich get richer, so falling behind can be disastrous. However, with careful planning everyone can increase their coffers so that the race is neck to neck.

It is somewhat like Age of Steam in that once you go into unrecoverable debt, you are out of the game. In the Age of Steam, you are out. In this game if you have been a careless spender, you might sit and watch everyone else take 15 more actions on their turn to your one or two.

Played with 3 and all of us are ready to try it again.

Changes the rules and improves play. However, text on some of the pogs is also changed by placing cards beneath the stack. I really don't like that. I think I'll either not buy this upgrade, or sell my copy and buy a completely new reprint when surely this occurs. The game boards & screens are nice.

This is a good little game despite the fact this is a dice game involving a lot of luck. It is short, light, and simple. It is a "King of the Mountain" type game and when played with the right crowd can generate a lot of surprises and laughs.

The cards are well done. I often object to this type of card play when added to a game--but I enjoyed these cards. They are different and refreshing.

The characters are large & sturdy cardboard in broad-based holders. The rest of the components are nice, but few and simple and therefore I have a lot of trouble seeing $44 worth of value. Seems a little over priced for what it is. The game sells out quickly so that obviously doesn't deter many.

I shock myself by thinking I might get this game when it becomes available again.

This and King Of Tokyo are Kevin's games, and he was right when he thought I would like this dice game better. As he points out, it has a little more strategy and plays a little like Alea Iacta Est (which he knows I like) where there are choices for dice allocation.

Easy set up, easy to teach, easy to learn & play, and put away.

Graphics could have been more interesting. Consistent bad throws of the dice can lose the game. The graveyard is an interesting feature. There are several approaches to leveling up and gaining points. Yes, I want this one too.

Our group really enjoys Liar's Dice (of which this game has several similarities), but we have played Liar's Dice so many times, thought this card game would be a refreshing variant. Even though the game held surprises which I thought funny and enjoyed, overall the game flopped. Thankfully with 5 players it didn't take the 45 minutes indicated on the box.

Type: Co-op/partnership

Players are jailed convicts one of whom will lose, or all can lose--never will all win. And that is where the fun comes it. Each round prisoners gang up on another and then can betray their tenuous partnerships. Meanwhile the scapegoat can blackmail and if others consecutively put him down, his position grows stronger. Prisoners steal from and rat on one anothe, and there are no hidden enemies.

Very satisfyingly cutthroat. A balanced game were prisoners temporarily working together can keep the leader in check while sneakily strengthening their own position. Some luck, but stronger on strategy, negotiation, and bluffing.

Better than Panic Station which I felt had been published without enough corrective play testing. I like the art too, and it plays in less than an hour. Room icons are easy to remember.

This is a nice link between co-op and partnership games--fills a spot I didn't know was empty.

Despite that this game takes hours to play, it gets a high rating. It ended long before I was ready for it to end.

Despite the fact the rule book is daunting, it gets a high rating. And the tutorial for a beginner's game is great.

Despite the massive card text which tends to annoy me, it doesn't in this case.

Complaints: The Location Cards should be printed on only one side, not double sided. I think there should be two sets. On the back of the rule book there is a review of the monster/enemy symbols, but there should also be a player's aid for the rest of the icons.

I like: The modular board sets up differently each time for variety. Graphics are good, and the 4 player tokens are fantastic. This brings us to the real meat of the game, the excellent play. Interestingly, there are solo and co-op variants.

This is a softly spoken deck building game, so even those who proclaim they don't like the genre, might overlook the building aspect and very much enjoy it.

I must say I am certainly impressed with Vlaada Chvátil. I have yet to be disappointed with one of his games.

A dexterity game that loosely resembles Jenga, and is okay to play once in awhile with children or for some adult laughs. It only lasts 5 minutes so a few games went by quickly and we were onto something else. Don't think I'd every buy this but if someone gave it to me I would keep it and maybe bring it out once a year.

What I appreciate most about the game is the balance--going first has a huge advantage, as does going last, and all the spots in between. When someone chose to exchange places, we never knew what spot they would choose. Even in the last round when we all thought last place would be best for final maneuvering, It turned out that all the Gnomes were taken by the first two and the last person couldn't build all he wanted. When one person went for the most Elves & Gnomes, another worked toward fewer but more valuable workers; one went for money to exchange for goods & workers, another concentrated on buildings, while another used most of his actions to mess & interact with others. That made it a very interesting game and one person's actions tended to counter balance another's.

Re-playability is increased because there are 15 Guilds, only 5 of which enter a game, so when chosen randomly that makes every game very different because the Guilds very much change the direction of the game.

Even though I find the box unattractive, I think the game & board is very pretty. The game breaks down very neatly into the box.

This is a strategy game with depth that requires planning. It is worker placement and resource management. Just the kind of game I like.
