According to my homemade Chinese calender, 2012 is the Year of the Avatar!

To celebrate, I've started this list to track my Avatar Changes.

If you want to join the celebration of Avatarness and track your Avatar's here, you can as well.

There are some requirements, though.

First, You have to be thinking about maybe changing your Avatar during 2012. I plan on a semi-monthly change, but your mileage* may vary.

Second . . . Well, Actually, there's just the one requirement.

I'll be posting my Avatars here. That's just how I roll.

If you change your avatar and want attention, you can post it here, too, and I'll probably give you a thumb. No guarantee's, though.

All avatars posted here should include an Avatar title in bold, a short explanation, and some interesting, and potentially true trivia.

* or "Kilometerage" for the metric-heads.

Junker Jorg

Here's my Standard Avatar for reference.

It's a picture of Junker Jorg, my favorite German Knight. He is typically seen with his pet Cylon Raider, but in this picture, it's just Jorg.

He hates lightning, loves former nuns, and always pronounces his J's like Y's.

I don't plan to use this avatar at all during 2012, but I put it in this list just to bother you.

Junkerberg: January 1 - January 3

My first avatar of the year represents January, the first month of the year. It's not my favorite month.

January and February were the last 2 months added to the Roman Calender. They managed to Ruin the calendar for those of us who care about prefixes. Thanks to them, SEPTember, OCTober, NOVember and DECember come 2 months too late.

I chose a wintry mountain for January's background.

Janus Jorg: January 3-January 31 (Intermittently)

That first Avatar was just not doing it for me, so I changed to this little number in honor of Janus, the Roman god for whom January was named.

Janus is the Roman god of new beginnings, and is, of course, best known to modern audiences from his appearance in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode "Halloween", where a Statue of Janus helps to transform kids into whatever demon they were dressed up as.

Some more cultured geeks may also know him from the HBO Rome episode, "Stealing from Saturn". In it, Lucius Vorenus has a statue of Janus as the centerpiece of the Grand Opening party for his new business.

This is the absolute limit of my photoshop abilities. It's all downhill from here.

Jorg in Graceland: January 6 - January 9

This Avatar celebrates Elvis' Birthday, but I put it up a couple of days early.

I know almost nothing about Graceland. Most of my knowledge of it comes from the scene in Spinal Tap where they sing at Elvis' grave, and from the Paul Simon album.

When I went to Memphis, I saw the Peabody Ducks instead.

I tried putting Elvis hair on him twice, but he just kept looking like Roy Orbison.

Konig Jorg: January 13-16

When contemplating an Avatar for Martin Luther King day, I realized I was already 2/3 of the way there. All I needed was some sign of royalty. The gaudy crown was irresistible.

When looking for MLK2 trivia, this was my favorite one: He never graduated from High School, but went on to get his doctorate.

I was tempted to use this Avatar for Elvis, also, but I thought it was a little too early in the year for that kind of cop out.

Cop outs are scheduled to begin around April.

Here I Stand Luther: January 21-May 25 (intermittently)

Charles V opened the Diet of Worms on January 21, 1521. (The name is much funnier in English than German.) Worms was where Luther made his famous "Here I Stand" statement. Soon after the Diet, Luther was hidden away in the Wartburg (Also funnier in English), where he grew a beard, translated the Bible and went by the name Junker Jorg.

NateStraight made this avatar for me in a previous geeklist. The other guy is Leo X AKA Giovanni di Lorenzo de' Medici.

My wife drew this. It's a very small me- those lines are college rule. I used to have the prof. from Futurama, but now that It's actually me, I feel more honest.

Hell, while I'm at it, BSG and Arkham can also suck it.
Man this is refreshing!

Fun fact about me? The town where I was born is a tiny central European hamlet whose Wikipedia entry is just coordinates. Also, I used to juggle diabolo for a circus, and my favourite compressed cow offal gelatinous cold cut would have to be head cheese.

Punxsutawney Jorg - January 29-February 3

Groundhog day is one of my favorite under-appreciated holidays. I love the counter-intuivity that if the sun is out, it means 6 more weeks of winter, but if it's an overcast day, spring is here!

I always make it a point to eat sausage at some point each February 2nd.

Groundhogs are known by a variety of names. In fact, the name "Groundhog" has been losing popularity lately, putting this holiday at risk.

Please join me in the fight to preserve the term Ground Hog by fighting terms like "Woodchuck", "Land Beaver", and, of course, the insidious "Whistle Pig".

"How much hog would a ground hog ground if a ground hog could grind hog."

Luther in a Winter Wonderland - Febrary 3

This avatar represents February. February is typically the only month it ever snows enough to make a snowman around these parts. This February has an extra day of snowy goodness.

Leap years are a day longer, which gives us enough time to squeeze in the Olympics and a US Presidential election.

My favorite leap year of all time was 46 BC. Thanks to some Calendar issues, it lasted 445 days and none of them were wasted on Olympics or US Presidential elections. Now That's a great year.

Liebe Luther - February 11

Hearts have been a symbol of Valentine's Day since 1929, when Bugs Moran's North Side Gang stopped the hearts of several members of Al Capone's South Side Gang.

I wanted to put Luther in a Hoodie Footie to capture the true meaning of Valentines Day, but my Photoshop skills just weren't up for the challenge.

The Big Hunka Love Bear was also an option, but at 4 feet tall, I couldn't fit "Hunka" into the avatar box.

The Bad Pfennig: February 15

Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809.

He was killed by John Wilkes Booth (Portrayed here by a snowman). The Lincoln assassination conspiracy is even more fascinating than the Kennedy conspiracy theories in my opinion. And it has the added benefit of being true.

Originally, Booth planned to kidnap Lincoln. I can't imagine how surreal it would be to have a President of the United States kidnapped. Later, Booth changed the plan to killing Lincoln, VP Johnson, and Sec of State Seward at three different locations at the same time.

US Grant was almost thrown into the mix, when it looked like he would be in Lincoln's box.

Lincoln's birthday was last Sunday, but for some reason I planned this avatar for today. I don't really remember why.

Luther Gras - February 21

Mardi Gras is the third great holiday in February. (Joining Groundhog Day and Super Bowl Sunday to make February the best party month.)

Mardi Gras ushers in the traditional period in America where every Fast Food chain brings their fish sandwiches out for a spin. I love fish sandwiches, so I love Mardi Gras.

If I'm doing a Louisiana-themed avatar, you know a Texas Themed one can't be far away. If only there were a Texas holiday right around the corner . . .

Lone Star Luther: Feb 28

March 2 is Texas Independence Day.

Texas won its independence in 1836, then gave it up in 1846. We have been threatening to win it back ever since. Some would call that fickle, but I wouldn't say that to our face.

Texas was originally much bigger than it is today. It included parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming, but we sold off much of our land to help the Belt Buckle industry.

The Other Luther: March 3

Special thanks to Benjro for helping with this avatar and most of the others you'll see this month.

March is apparently Women's History Month, so the avatar choice was obvious.

Katharina von Bora (or Katie, as I call her) was in a Cistercian convent when she heard about Luther's movement. She escaped the convent with several other nuns by hiding in a fish wagon.

Luther found homes for all the others, and eventually married Katharina.

Luther used to say that the book of Galatians was his "Katie".

He's such a romantic.

Julius Jorg: March 8

Gaius Julius Caesar was killed on the Ides of March by a group of Senators led by blah blah blah, we all know that story, but I really want to talk about the Colosseum.

The Colosseum wasn't built until long after Caesar's death, but it looks cool, so I put it in anyway.

The Colosseum was originally called the Flavian Amphitheater, but there used to be a 90 foot statue of the Colossus (or possibly Nero) at one of the main entrances. Eventually, people started calling the Amphitheater the Colosseum because of the statue.

The statue is gone now (along with much of the Colosseum), but the name stuck.

The middle of March is looking crowded, avatar-wise, so I put this up a little early.

March 15-17: Junker O'Jorg

St. Patrick had a fascinating life that I have almost completely forgotten. He is best known for wearing green and having one of the best drinking holidays in America.

St. Patrick's Day, Cinco De Mayo and New Year's Eve are the holy trinity of group, celebratory drinking in the restaurants that I frequent. (Christmas, Thanksgiving and Valentines Day are, of course, the best days for solo drinking.)

The hat that Jorg is wearing was stolen from the Lucky Charms guy. It's Magically Delicious.

Jorg Madness: March 18

March Madness is the greatest sports tournament in the world, and this year is extra cool because my wife's alma mater (Baylor) is still alive in the men's and the women's side.

When combined with RG3's Heisman win, this is easily the best sports year the Bears are ever going to have. It's all downhill from here, so I needed an avatar to celebrate.

I think everyone needs 2 college teams to root for. One powerhouse and one underdog. The powerhouse needs to be in the post season most every year to give you something to root for. The underdog needs to really stink, so that when they finally win, it's a cause for celebration. Baylor is my underdog.

It's also good to have a team to root against. It needs to be a school that a lot of your friends went to. For me that's Texas A&M. I love it when they loose.

Springtime with Jorg: March 20

My sister was born on the first day of Spring, but I was born on Thanksgiving. My holiday is So much better than hers.

Scoreboard.

Clearly, I've got no spring trivia. The next avatar will be much better. I promise.

DB Cooper: March 25

Today is Alternate Universe Day! *

Sheldon Cooper wrote:
I subscribe to the many worlds theory that posits the existence of an infinite number of Sheldons in an infinite number of universes, but I assure you that in None of them am I dancing.

On November 24, 1971, a man hijacked a plane to Seattle claiming to be Dan Cooper (later mis-quoted as DB Cooper) and claiming to have a bomb in his briefcase.

He had the plane land in Seattle, had the other passengers disembark, then he and the crew took off to Mexico with $200,000 and some parachutes. At some point he jumped out of the plane with the money and hasn't been seen since. It's one of the most fascinating crimes ever, and one of my favorite fake names.

DB Cooper isn't exactly a good role model, but when I was choosing my avatar, this FBI sketch of DB Cooper was my second choice.

Therefore, if there are an infinite number of Darrins on an infinite number of BGG's, this is my avatar in some of them.

*It's not actually alternate universe day in This Universe, but I'm sure it is somewhere.
