I wanted to make a list of the most popular games to play with your wife/ girlfriend/ spouse as chosen by the members at bgg. I am doing it as a reference point for myself and, I hope, others here at bgg. I’ve went through every Geeklist with a Tag of “wife,” “girlfriend,” and/or “spouse” and recorded each game that was added as an item in a positive manner. By “positive manner” I mean, if a game was added either by the owner of the list to say that he and his significant other enjoyed it, someone added the item as a recommendation or when positive feedback came to an item added by someone looking for recommendations. I went through about fifty-five Geeklists, recorded over 200 individual games and over 500 votes for those games. What will follow are the TOP 25 vote getters of Games Recommended for Wives, Girlfriends and Spouses.

One of my highest priorities when buying a new game is to ensure my wife, Jen, is going to enjoy it as well. Jen is my main gaming partner and if she doesn’t like the game, it doesn’t get played and judging by what I read on the other Geeklists, it is much the same for everyone else.

Each game will have its Name and Votes Received.

*Any comments made about the games are Jens and my opinions. Please remember that the point of the list isn’t what I think, but what we have all contributed to the Geek on this matter. I am adding comments, as I hope others do, only to add extra information to the statistics provided.

1.) Lost Cities 28 Votes

Lost Cities is a game Jen and I only recently picked up. We’ve played about 15 games and have enjoyed it very much so far. The game is easy to learn and understand, quick to play and non-confrontational. This is probably our second favourite card game to play together and would both recommend it.

This is one of my wifes favorite. Although it is quite luck driven, it is not a big issue as the game plays very quick so that you can play multiple games in a row to even taht out. This is also one of the reasons that we play it quite often: It also requires very little set up time and can be played in about 20 min.

I thought this'd be a shoe-in with my girlfriend, but much to my surprise she really doesn't care for it. It was probably one of the first 4 or 5 games I bought after getting into them.

I think it's the scoring and fact that once you start an expedition you better finish aspect that just doesn't jive with her.

To her credit, she's trying to give it it's fair shake, but we've played it probably about 7 or 8 times, and I don't think it'll hit our table very often.

Fine by me, as she seems to take a liking to more complex, meatier games, which I enjoy too.

2.) Carcassonne 23 Votes

Carcassonne is a favourite of Jens, but not one of mine. We play with the variant that allows you to keep three tiles in your hand at all times, to allow for more planning and combat luck of the draw. We also play with four expansions, The River, Inns and Cathedrals, Builders and Traders and King, though we don’t use the scoring for the King expansion. This is an easy to learn game, easy to play, pretty non-confrontational and looks really nice all laid out. Anyone who has completed a puzzle can pick it up quickly. A recommended game for those starting into the hobby (read obsession).

Something just doesn't grab my wife about this one. It's easy, which is one of her requirements, but she never really wants to play. For me it's annoying to play because I want it to be at leats a close game but I never know even roughly how many points I have till the end because of the farmer scoring (yes I know this objection makes me stupid and bad). I wonder if it would be more fun without farms, anyone tried?

3.) Bohnanza 16 Votes

Bohnanza is one of our favourite games to play. For us, it is near impossible not to have a great time with this bean trading and farming game. You have to get the German edition so you can make up names for each of your beans. We have played with a bit of a trading variant where you can trade a bean more than once in a turn, making three, four and even five player trades! Again, this is an easy game to pick up with almost no downtime as you always have an opportunity to take part in the trading of beans. The only drawback is that you really need at least three to play and more to have a really good game. I find this plays best with five or more (with the expansion) and both Jen and I would heartily recommend it!

My wife really likes a certain two-player variant of Bohnanza. I'm more interested in four or more player games. We own several expansions, all in german, which is why most of them haven't hit the table yet. Most of the expansions also don't work with two players, and I can't come up with a good variant.

p.s. this is my favourite geeklist

4.) Ticket to Ride 14 Votes

This is our most played and my wife’s favourite boardgame. Odd how those two things coincide… Anyway, there are few choices involved in the game allowing it to be played at a quick pace. It is generally non-confrontational, though there have been a few times when a route has been taken and someone has sent evil eyes across the table. It scales very well, as we enjoy playing with 2, 3, 4 or 5. We recently bought Ticket to Ride: Europe and enjoy that immensely as well, but find this to be a better gateway game into the hobby. Jen and I would both highly recommend this game.

Some responses to criticisms of the game:

Quote:
The game can lock up as the rules are written. There can be a situation where there aren't enough cards to win any hops.

The only way this can occur is if all the gray cubes come out on different tiles... but its a very simple fix to just put the last one drawn back in and redraw. This has happened to us about once in 50 games.

Quote:
Also, the original rules made much more sense. With the publisher's rules flipping the tiles over does absolutely nothing.

The 'flipping' part is true - but it does give a sense of the passing scenery! For the rest, the revised rules give a much better game.

Quote:
All in all a very good 'spouse' game, but Lost Cities is a much better game in my opinion.

Our opinion is the opposite - BC is a far more dynamic game, with more interesting choices and lot more variation in the tempo of play. LC is more like a one-way street.

Quote:
...going by the author's original rules added back in enough tension to make it playable.

Again, our experience is the opposite - more fun and tension, and the sense of either 'waiting for the right card or making a compromise play' is much more prevalent in the revised rules.

I think LC, as one of the first of its 'class', acquired a certain reputation here early on in the Geek's existence (having Knizia as designer did not hurt either) - and its hard to shift that mass of opinion. But BC is still the better game!

6.) San Juan 12 Votes

We find this game to be a step up from the normal light fare we busy ourselves with. There is more strategy and planning involved in San Juan then most of the card games we play including Lost Cities, Cribbage, BattleLine and Bohnanza. We bought it due to enjoying Puerto Rico, but not wanting to take the time to set up the game for a two player excursion. It takes a while to learn all of the cards and how they apply to different strategies, but if you are looking for a deeper card game experience playable in less than forty-five minutes, then this is the game for you. We both recommend it!

personally i find this game to be pretty light, you need to know what the cards do, so need a couple of games to work out their interactions, but light nonetheless.
ive not played lost cities or baloon cup, are they light compared to this then?

This game is the BOMB! It broke through what ten years of gaming could never do in terms of playing with my wife. My wife said she like'd it! Now mind you it was a minor breakthrough. The last and only time she said she like'd a decent boardgame was Carcasonne and she's a degree or two warmer than lukewarm on it. Puerto Rico is coming soon to our family so we'll have to see. I told her not to be intimidated by the display of all the pieces .

Mmmm...I'm going to have to order 'Ticket to Ride.' Bohnanze sounds real interestin'. Anyone know if Power Grid has companion-appeal?

Our second most played boardgame and, of course, Jen’s second favourite game. This game combines many aspects of other games we enjoy, tile laying, city building, and hand management into a very good, straightforward game. This game scales well between two and four players, though we haven’t tried it with anymore than four. Another highly recommended game.

The two-player variant with the dummy 3rd player works very well. My wife and I like this a lot but she always beats me because she has a much better sense of how to arrange her Alhanbra buildings.

My wife and I both love this so much - especially with many of the expansions. It seems to contain so many of the game elements we both enjoy - colourful tiles, building (especially the walls), cards, etc. etc. About the right time length of 1 - 1 1/2 hours for us.

Simpler than any game on this list. The best move is almost always apparent. That said, makes a decent light game you can actually lay out on a bed.

I just received it for Christmas from my wife and after a couple playings it looks like a winner. We enjoy the decisions offered with the game and the multiple ways to score points. While it may only get five to ten playings in a year, it will still be a successful two player game for us.

I couldn't disagree more. This game in my opinion was meant to be played confrontationally. There are plenty of cards in the deck that allow you to alter your flightpath or screw over your opponent. (Nothing they can't fix quickly however), but the opportunities do exist, and that is what makes this game fun in my opinion. Whenever me and the GF play, there is tons of tension. Highly recommended fro me!

9.) Settlers of Catan 10 Votes

Settlers of Catan is the game that started it all for us. This is still one of our favourite games to play and is an excellent game to bring non-gamers into the hobby. I believe this would be higher on the list if it was playable with two. I know there is a variant that allows it, but it is dreadful! For both Jen and myself, this is a highly recommended three or four player game.

There are a lot of 2 player variants out there. Does anyone in the "play it with the spouse" crowd have any preferences? Or do they just prefer to find more players?

I played this two-player with a friend for a while and we both enjoyed it, just with the regular rules. I'm not sure what we were doing wrong to have that much fun with just two players...

I guess since I won't know if anyone replies; they can send me a message with any recommendations if they feel up to it.

Couldn't agree more. This game started a gaming revolution in Slovenia. And the only game my wife would play for a long time.

You can play with 2 if both of you play 2 colors (bridge type strategy), or by getting the Settlers of Catan: Traders & Barbarians expansion that includes the game for 2 rules.

This one hasn’t done very well with Jen. I really enjoy the game and have played it more solitaire than with gaming partners. Jen has tried it twice, but hasn’t enjoyed the cooperativeness, finds it takes too long and doesn’t enjoy the theme. Then again, if you want a visually stunning, cooperative game based on the most popular fantasy series ever…

i played this with my wife for the first time last night, i enjoyed it but she found it lacking, hopefully with a few more games she will warm to it.
I'm not quite sure why she wasn't keen, it was very tight and sauron got me via an event whilst i was on the edge of mount doom, maybe its becasue she had to throw herself at sauron a few turns before that she felt cheated she hadn't made it all the way too...well she should have hung on to the ring then shouldnt she

My wife loves this game, even though it takes a long time to set up and our playing time is usually about 1,5 hrs. She is quite new to board games and has only been playing Lost Cities, Carcassonne and 3-4 four other games before.
I thought this would definetly be too much of a hassle for her, but she really loves this game.

We’ve never played and therefore do not have an opinion. The reason this is “Mystery Rummy Series” rather than a specific game is due to three of the games receiving votes. Of the three games to receive votes, “Jack the Ripper” received five votes, “Jekyll & Hyde” three votes and “Al Capone” one vote.

We love Jack the Ripper (now, THAT'S not something you're likely to hear every day). It's a very good light card game. My wife (who is not a competitive gamer) likes gin rummy, so the basic idea was easy to understand. We'll sit down and play three or four hands every now and then, and it has a high "just one more" factor. Great graphics, a good gift for those who are not confirmed gamers--but only if you show them how to play. Don't make them figure it out from the rules.

While if games get too competitive I don't think we enjoy them as much (Very Clever Pipe Game and Carcasonne were the worst for us... must be tile laying), since the confrontation in Confrontation is direct I think we enjoy this a lot more than when one of our well-laid plans is screwed up at the last moment by a passive-aggressive, incongruous road or pipe.

If one of us wants to play it, one of us asks the other if he or she wants to "feed Pippin to the Cave Troll," and we always bust up laughing when poor old Boromir explodes on an enemy.

I don't remember any bad blood when we played this, and since the game is so quick we play two, reversing roles, to help keep things feeling fair.

We’ve tried this a few times two player and have enjoyed it enough to play some more. If I want to play a strategic two player card game, I would personally choose something else. Sometimes the direct confrontation of some of the characters deters from the enjoyment of the game on a husband – wife level for Jen and I. I think we would both still recommend it with caution.

This is great as a two player game. I think many people never try it two player. Because it's designed to handle so many players people seem to feel they should play it with lots of players. But personally, I think this game is best with two. When played with lots of players it tends to go too long for my tastes. I love being able to choose two roles and play off their interactions.

Seconded, Even with three we thought it wouldn't work well because it still uses a character selection mechanic similar to the cobbled-together 2-player one, but we never managed to get four to play it.

Fine and dandy as long as you have an idea which roles your opponent is choosing. I like this aspect of Citadels a lot. The whole "I know you're choosing the merchant, so I'll assassinate the Merchant. But you know I'm expecting you to pick the merchant, so why would you choose the merchant? But you know that I know that you know..."

Inconceivable!

Agreed.
We just started playing this in 2. You cannot choose the same characters every time - you have to adjust and fight back. In our games, we ended up using the assassin and the thief about once per game. The warlord can be powerful too, the merchant is too tempting and I avoid it. Overall, I like the balance of the characters.
Based on my 2P experience, I rank this game v. high. I expect it will be just as good or better in 4p.

I received this for Christmas and it looks like a real winner for us! We've only recently really gotten involved with abstract strategies, but once I figured out my wife liked them I put this at the top of my Christmas list. After four playings we have each won two hard fought battles. Great bits and an enjoyable half hour of gaming!

This is Jen’s favourite game period. We play it a great deal and enjoy it when we do. While a great deal of the game ends up being luck of the draw, careful hand management ends up winning one of us the game more often then not. We both would recommend this game, though we both consider it an “classic” game rather than a Eurogame.

We like Cribbage a lot as well.

Other 2 player fun card games I've played a lot in my life: Gin Rummy, Casino, Pinochle (original, 2 player version - I know it is more popular as a 4-player double-deck). We used to play Skip-bo a lot too. ( My son would probably have me add Uno and Fluxx... )

I find Blue Moon to be one of the best 2-player games on the geek and my fiancé loves it (as well as MtG). My kid brother and his girlfriend also play this and they're not gamers.

Quick tip on the base races -- let the lazier player be the Vulca who are more about direct damage thus less taxing to play than the Hoax. Perhaps analagous to MtG's Red vs. Blue.

We both find this to be an above average game that incorporates some of our favourite things in tile laying, hand management and city building. There are many difficult decisions along the way and yet the game play itself is very simple. We are generally able to finish a game within fifteen minutes, which is a great thing considering the depth of the game. Highly recommended.

We like this one. It just feels mathematically sound and there's enough going on to bring our attention fully to the game.

A lot of people seem to stress how well this works with two, but we've never had any less fun when more people have joined. It seems like if you understand the game, it applies to any number of opponents.

Also, I have some good memories of pulling off some ingenious temple connections, so this is definately positive for me.

After our success with original Carcassonne and expansions we branched out to this version. We didn’t like it enough to keep it and traded it away. We found it to be too busy in the artwork and didn’t feel the slight changes to game play added enough to the game for our enjoyment.

How does this compare with Ark of the Covenant? I sold off my original Carc + expansions and kept The Castle, The City and Ark (as they play quite differently).

Ark of the Covenant was, to me, a more refined but less pretty Carc. How does H&G compare?

I like this game because it is a longer game. For the most part, two-player games seem to fall into the category of light or filler games (in my opinion). This game helps scratch the itch for a *real* boardgame even when I only have one other person to play with. (Though I would still choose 2-player Power Grid as my favorite longer 2-player eurogame.)

a good game for 2, and the theme is cool, but I do agree that it takes longer than it should

Starship Catan IMO is the best 2-player game I have ever come across. Beautiful boards and cards with cute aliens, plenty of options (ship upgrade vs. port expansion), a little bit of Memory, dice rolling and even additional scenarios on the website. There's only one card which is confrontational by allowing you to steal resources from the other player and you can play without it.

I really, really, wanted my wife to like this game, but for some reason she is just not into it but can't really say why cry

Purchased in Amsterdam for some variety during my nine month wanderjahr in Europe. Spouse enjoys the game a gives a 6.5 rating; I didn't like it as well as she did, and rated it at 4 -- hence an average rating of 5.25 from us on BGG.

Wife: likes space theme, gathering up resources and upgrading ship; doesn't like end game monotony.

Me: didn't like limited strategy options and lack of significant decision making or risk taking; game lacks challenge and interest.

24.) Schotten Totten / BattleLine 6 Votes

We’ve never played Schotten Totten, but own BattleLin and have played it several times. Five of the votes are for Schotten Totten and one was for BattleLine. While we both enjoy BattleLine, which is like playing nine face up hands of Monte Carlo poker, Jen would prefer Lost Cities or Cribbage and therefore this doesn’t get played quite as much. But, we would both still recommend this game, especially to those who have a background with poker.

In that case, Kevin, you should go for Schotten-Totten.

My copy (the latest edition?) of Schotten Totten came with the Battle Line cards, so you can have the best of both worlds.

25.) Through the Desert 5 Votes

We’ve only tried this one a couple of times, so we don’t have a great feel for it yet. What I can say is that the camels are pretty and it seems like a really neat area control game in which you have to pay attention to a lot of different things in order to ensure you are scoring a good number of points. It also plays rather quickly, meaning a couple can get three or four games finished in an hour.

Another one of my girlfriend's favorites. It has some depth but isn't too thinky. Plus, there's the camels.

I ripped the shrink off this one last night and started reading the rules. I know it will be a hit due to the pastel camels- Colleen loves pretty cute things. Plus, it looks pretty easy to understand, the complexity arriving during the game.

I can't say why but it simply did not appeal to my wife. She can't pin it down either. I thought for sure those little pastel camels would snag her but even those didn't do it. Three plays now and I think I may have to put it up for trade.

Alas

Excellent choice. My neighbor (and fellow member of bbg!) and our spouses played it last night, a hit with all.

Both the GF and I think this game lacks any sense of enjoyment and sucks the life from the room immediately. We divorced quickly after our first game.

No not really that bad, but we didnt enjoy it.

I'm surprised to see Dungeoneer not making this list. I would say it was a shoe in and a great choice for a husband and wife to enjoy together. Great list though!

I for one don't understand the fuss.
The solution I devised was to give her a 10 minute massage if I won and a 20 minute massage if she won. This is for 60 minutes of gaming.
Now when we finish a gaming session she is already going through the shelves looking for the next one so she has time to think through her strategy.
I'll have her playing the ASL Starter Kit scenarios within a month at this rate.

Cool list.
BTW my wife just clarified when she saw the title by asking "So this isn't a list for single Geeks to find a wife or girlfriend is it?".

I must admit when you reread the title it could be read that way
