I found this game for just under two bucks at a charity sale. I've heard good and bad about it, but for 2 bucks towards a good cause... we both know how the story ends.
It definitely seems all about the narrative and not so much about strategy, tactics, gameplay ... I'll give it a try in the sipirt of the thing and see how it plays out.

The great thing about this: follow the charts. They are in alphabetical order. They walk you through the game.
Even after 25 years, I was able to pick it up and play it again.

Picked up a copy of this cheap last week and put it on the table last night.
The "Juju Bee" has flown two missions, the second of which (Lille Indus.) was really quiet but the first to Cherbourg's airfield was hectic as hell. The worst of which was heavy flack (resulting in 7 hits and the loss of engine 1).
I like the game, not many decisions, but a good narrative and a pleasant way to pass the time.

I could have picked Breakout: Normandy, my favourite Vassal game, or Advanced Squad Leader, my favourite FTF game, or even The Russian Campaign, my first wargame love, but instead I choose this old classic, which I have played at least once a week for the last 60 weeks, contributing a weekly AAR to the B-17 Play-by-Forum pages here on BGG. If I was just playing the game solitaire as it was designed for, I probably wouldn't have picked it, but I find that the group dynamic brings a whole new level of enjoyment in playing the game. I've never considered myself to be an RPG player, but that is effectively what we are doing as part of the 281st BG.

Finally got back to this game after two weeks of real life events.
27 August 1943: Strike One flies with the 152nd BS/281st BG to take out one of Hitler's V-Weapons sites in Watten, France. After getting past a lone FW-190 and some heavy (and damaging) flak, Strike One makes a 50% bomb run. The tail gunner is seriously wounded by the flak but makes a rapid recovery after surgery. The plane suffers only light damage - this time.

Oooooooh! Another shiny thing to chase... (I really didn't need to find this geek list )
I've had the files for this well-loved chestnut for a while and recently reconstructed the original for my Nephew as part of his Christmas present (he's recently moved cities and is only finding time for solitaire gaming, so this seemed ideal).
On the way, I had to play it a bit to check I had all the bits (it turns out the files were actually missing a page of vital tables, so I'm glad I did) and I found my self sufficiently "drawn in" that I had to hold my resolve firm to give it to him, rather than substituting a board game purchase in its place at the last minute. I also came across the ton of materials on BGG for pimping it up that will further enhance the sense of immersion (I'm still amazed at what a little art and graphics can do for the game experience).
Anyway, it's half-term and I'm in the mood for a little solo gaming and some cutting and sticking. This seems like a perfect fit.

Flying a milk run to Le Bourget tonight with the 281st BG - should be a piece of cake with three ace gunners and the hard-bitten Captain Willard at the controls.
We're all a bit apprehensive about the next mission : Schweinfurt. We'll be getting the mission details next Monday. If you like playing B-17 and would like to take part in a group mission, come and join us for it ! Find us on the B-17 Play-By-Forum pages, or contact our Group commander,

I wasn't really attracted to this one, but my friend Marty brought it to game night to show off because he knew Ryan was such a big fan of the B-17. Since there was a copy in front of me (and it's a much beloved game), I asked to play it and Marty obliged by teaching me how. I pretty much played solitaire while he helped guide me along through the rules. I really enjoyed it.
My bombardier, (coincidentally named "Marty") is, unfortunately, a drunkard and a louse.
This one has a very nice Vassal module. I played around with it tonight when I got home. I can totally see myself running bombing missions through Vassal when the wife has me trapped on the couch for a marathon night of reality TV torture.

Marty and I got there around 4:30 so he could teach me this old classic. Was fun. My crew members are all some lucky SOBs... except the bombadier, "Marty". I think he's a drunkard. He managed to miss every single target.
Aside from that, my port side gunner cut his finger loading his weapon, and my co-pilot bumped his head on the console when he got up to take a leak.

Thrift karma brought this one my way just after I had picked up one for a friend's son on ebay. The story of why this is my favorite is told HERE.
Runners up would be:
and a big pile of boxed RPGs I found at the GW outlet, including a ton of Top Secret.
I might have included 1830: Railways & Robber Barons, but just after I found mine, my friend Billy found one in shrink that he sold for $175. My copy pales . . .

After going gameless through December
, I finally got back to this game. And what a game it was...
29 July 1943: The On Parole flies Tail End Charlie for the 281st BG on their mission to Kiel, Germany. Bad weather causes the primary and secondary targets to be bypassed, but the airfields on Heligoland Island take a walloping as On Parole delivers a 96% strike. Dogged by German fighters for nearly the entire mission, On Parole destroys six of them, with two probables and one damaged. The Germans get their revenge, however, killing six of the crew and lightly wounding two others, and turning the aircraft into a flying block of Swiss cheese. On Parole makes it back to base but will never fly again, suffering 448 points of damage.
After another round of obstacles to overcome, I got back to the game:
15 August 1943: On its first mission Strike One flies with the 152nd BS/281st BG to attack the airfields in Amiens, France. A flak hit in the pilot compartment windscreen does not rattle the crew as they manage a 40% bomb run. One Bf-109 is destroyed by the ball gunner before more enemy flak kills the navigator and lightly wounds the bombardier. Strike One returns from the mission with only light damage.
