Thursday
Thanks to picking up a Sunday shift I had Thursday off and got to hit up some game stores in some nearby cities.

In the evening I hit up my local gaming store. One of the regulars brought two of his girls with him so we played some Dixit: Journey to start. We didn't play with my cards and we had three or four sets mixed together so I'm not sure what sets were in play. I called "Feminism" one round and one of them guessed my card (after we explained feminism and advocate in the process) so I guess I taught some new words to some nine-year olds.

Second game to the table (after the girls left with their mom) was Garden Dice. Oww, my head. I did have a lot of fun with it, but for a dice game that is an awful lot of thinking. Funny move for the day was late in the game one player placed his bird and turned it into a bunny and the next turn everyone watered and harvested their vegetables as fast as they could.

Final game of the night was the obligatory Kingdom Builder. I'd have had a scotch to mourn the loss of Marshlands, but that would have been frowned upon in a toy store, especially if I didn't have enough to share. Anyways, this was the first game I played with the correct rules, thanks to Wil Wheaton. Docks, Tavern, Barn, Oracle (fuzzy on the order, my appologies) for the map with Builders, Knights, Nomads. Very tight game for two players, with a five point difference between them.

Saturday

Saturday happened on Saturday for the first time in a while. First up was Race for the Galaxy at three players. Two players were going heavy on Settle and Develop while I had a ton of trade and rare production planets, but only my original planet for Consume. I'm pretty sure I came in last on this go.

Second up was Kemet. I started blue heavy with white and it really didn't pay off. I couldn't win an attack to save my life versus the three warmongers even with both upgraded cards in my hand. Final score was 8, 7, 6, 2.

Third game was Dominion with Intrigue, Prosperity, Hinterlands, and Dark Ages in the mix. I'm having trouble remembering what kingdom cards were in the game, but there were a ton of cantrips. I went heavy on Ironworks, but couldn't keep up with the direct engines.

I finally got my revenge for Kemet in a second game of Dominion. Silver on the first turn, Scheme on the second, Goons on the third. I bought two more Goons during the game and except for an odd turn here and there I kept the Goons lock on for most of the game. I won that game with something like 30, 20, 19, 15.

Sunday

Sunday was Chaos in the Old World with four players. Nurgle being the only god to have even read the rules was off to a commanding lead at the start, but eventually was targeted by his brothers. Tzeentch started with control of Brettonia and spent half of the game ruining it on his own despite the presence of some annoying Brettonian event that stayed for half of the game. Slannesh was mostly content with corrputing Norsca, while Khorne was mostly around Tilea and the Badlands. Nurgle's luck really changed when the twin-tailed comet showed up and thanks to some divine intervention from his brothers he was unable to complete ruining The Empire before the comet removed his eight corruption counters. In the end Slaanesh crossed the 50 point threashold and finished with 57 points to Nurgle's 56. However, the joke is still on the both of them because they are still trapped in Tzeentch's plots, who will ultimately win anyways.

My first play of this one. Not sure what I was expecting but this game was significantly simpler than I expected. An enjoyable game, but not one I would find myself seeking out to play.

everyone likes this one. i've got the nomads expansion in the box as well.

played

played this friday afternoon. 4-player with caravan, tavern, barn, and oracle. kingdom cards were knights, merchants, and workers. brother-in-law won handily, effectively isolating me to a small portion of the map by doing his knight row right next to mine such that i couldn't caravan free. he had tons of location tiles by the end of the game. things are very crowded with 4, especially when everyone is trying to connect locations.

Misconception: There are no choices!

I absolutely see where this criticism is coming from. For a game with such simple rules, the depth of the game is not immediately obvious. For such a seemingly light game, a poor first move will absolutely destroy your chances of winning, and will likely make the game feel like the game on an autopilot descent to destruction.

I'm surprised the rule book doesn't offer any tips for game play. Starting off touching as few terrain types as possible, or acquiring a key location to give yourself flexibility early is absolutely crucial to enjoying the game; but none on that is clear without multiple plays. I got caught in the autopilot trap in my first play, and I completely understand how an experience like that would turn people off from the game. Fortunately, the game clicked for me and I was able to recognize the 'correct' way to play and Kingdom Builder has become one of my favorite games.

In the early game you do not play solely with the objectives in mind; your main concern should be flexibility, and which location power gives the greatest advantage in the game's current setup.

After the 3rd or fourth play of the game, I didn't feel that the randomness of the card draw was much of a factor in who wins. I've never come close to losing a game against new players, and in games with experienced players I've only on very rare occasion felt like bad draws was the deciding factor in victory.

Thursday

I had an awesome writeup for Thursday written up, but apparently I didn't save it and can't remember all of the details, so Thursday will be short.

I started with Thursday with two rounds of Star Realms. My luck seems to be changing with this game, winning both games.

Second up was two games of Kingdom Builder. I won the first round and my opponent won the second.

Last up was Red7. This is a neat little filler game. In the game you have seven cards total, we were able to play three fast games. It's very random at two, but I'd like to see how it handles more players.

Friday

It seems my Saturday group is run by a Time Lord or something because Saturday night somehow turned into Friday.

While four people were playing Brewmasters (which has been dubbed Misery Brew by one of our Euro-haters) I got in two games of Star Realms. First game I went Federation/Empire against Blobs. The extra authority generation allowed me to survive the onslaught and claim victory. In the second game my opponent went Blobs again and was wrecking all of my outposts. I had a hand full of outposts when the Absurdly Oversized Blob Assault of DoomTM came.

Second up I got in some Kingdom Builder. If I remember right the board was Tavern, Watchtower, Oracle, Shipyard while Lords, Discoverers and Miners were the objectives.

Final game of the night was Lords of Waterdeep. This was a six player match with both modules from Scoundrels of Skullport. I'm not really sure what all the lords were in play because it was after midnight and everyone just wanted to score, clean up, and go home. I know the lords that scored for Skullport and Undermountain quests were out and I was playing as the lord that scored an extra three points for all non-mandatory quests. I tried to do a bunch of little quests and stick everyone with a bunch of corruption on the last turn and that underhanded stunt was enough to place me solidly in fifth place.

Saturday

Saturday was a gaming/barbeque day where dinner consisted of pork loins, corn on the cob, Caesar salad, sweet potatoes, and apple crumble for desert. There were also plenty of sunburns to go around.

Oh, the games we played? When I got there I started with Kingdom Builder. I think the board was tavern, oracle, barn, shipyard and we were going for Fishermen, Lords, Discoverers. This game ended in a savage draw at the end for two of the four players.

Second up was Lords of Waterdeep. I got the Piety/Skullduggery guy again and thought I was doing pretty good with hammering out five of those quests and the 25 point Warfare quest. It turned out that that put me firmly in third place out of four, meaning I'm absolutely terrible at this game.

After dinner Roll for the Galaxy hit the table. I started with the extra green die and the bonus for green resources on green planets and drew the 6+ tech for brown planets early on. I matched that up eventually with the tech for bonus money for resources, so I thought I had a really good economy if the production phase happened. That said, the winner ran away with mostly cheap planets that provided a ton of dice.

EDIT: Typos

We played a LOT of 6 Nimmt, which means Denise and I didn't finish our game of Kingdom Builder before we got to Columbus. (On her tablet, I played as "Player" and Denise played as "Christy". Naturally.) We did manage to wrap it up on the return trip. I really like KB, although the hard copy is much more satisfying.
