Very underwhelming experience. It felt too abstract and mechanical for my taste.

I realize this is a very divisive game but I don't care, it's my favorite and I will teach and/or play it whenever possible. The library copy included all the expansions but it was quite a mess. After our game, I spent a solid ten minutes organizing everything.

I missed last week's post because I picked up Overwatch on the weekend and spent a large chunk of Sunday trying to keep my group's tank alive.

Wednesday

Wednesday started with Mombasa. The game seemed to have an absurd number of tracks to advance on. Halfway through the game I asked our host why the tracks were so long and he said they weren't. Then on the last turn he said "It's the last turn? Yeah, those tracks are too long". We kind of all loaded up on the red and black companies. I was mostly churning out diamonds throughout the game. On the last turn one opponent removed a bunch of black houses in favour of red. Since my shares in every company were pathetic, it didn't hurt as much as it did an opponent. I finished the game in last place.

Second game was Abyss. Early on I got the lord that provided pearls for every type of ally I sent to the council. On paper this looked amazing since I often waited to take whatever the last ally was for the bonus pearl. In reality this kind of hurt because my opponents were usually taking allies from the council instead and that left me with being forced to explore a lot. I spent a huge chunk of the game hoping for a freaking blue ally so I could buy the blue lord that could buy another lord for pearls. Using that wound up costing me 13 pearls total. In the end I won the game, but not by the runaway score my opponents expected.

Nope.

Saturday

Saturday started with a game of The Voyages of Marco Polo. This time I played as the two Polos. I spent most of the game slowly working my two markers eastward. As I did so, I gained a fair number of points from contracts and landing in the town that was providing 3 points a turn. The hardest part was saving up the 25 total gold needed to travel by sea along the south side of the map. Still, I had a significant lead in points. On the last turn I finally made it to Sumatra (which was the last city I needed to visit). Unfortunately, one opponent got there one action before me and was able to use the space that provided points based on outposts six times for thirty points. That was enough so that when final scoring came around he beat me by about four points.

Second of the night was Kingdom Builder. In this game we had Tavern, Oracle, Watchtower, and something that's evading me atm. Whatever it was, it was a placement ability. Objectives were Hermits, Workers, and Merchants I think (scored for most group of settlements). I can't remember a lot about how this game went, as this is Tuesday, but I remember the scores being close.

Final game was Dominion. This was a random supply of Forge, Milita, Rats, Royal Seal, Saboteur, Vault, Venture, Watchtower, and Working Village. Due to the large number of Prosperity cards, when I shuffled the randomizers it turned out that we would have a Platinum/Colony game.

I did my usual thing of desperately trying to make a Rats deck work. I started with buying a bunch of silver and then a gold early on and bought a Forge, hoping to Forge my Rats into provinces. It didn't work out very well. The Militia attacks were kind of annoying and the Saboteur usually hit a Rats, which was great for drawing cards lost to Militia, when I remembered the Rats' trashing perk. Meanwhile, I had one opponent pull a "Village Idiot" and had most of her deck as Worker's Village. She then started to Forge Colonies into Colonies in an attempt to end the game. In the end I couldn't get my Forge to line up with a pair of Rats until the last turn and my other opponent was beating the first opponent by three colonies and some change for the win.

Despite having never won a game with Rats, I am still determined to find a way to make that silly card work.

2x - Kingdom Builder - 36 months
3x - Forbidden Island - 20 months

My first play of Kingdom Builder was at Origins 2013. At this year's show I acquired a copy in the Math Trade and played a couple of 2p games to see if my initial opinion had improved any. It was still a bit underwhelming, but I believe looking beyond the obvious and seeing better scoring options will be the key for this one's longevity at our table.

I spent most of the month solo so had to get creative when it came to getting games to the table in June. This meant finding outlets (e.g. FLGS and Origins) for game time that led to lots of new stuff. But Forbidden Island saw the table as a fun solo option.

I enjoy this as a light, fast game, but this play seemed a bit skewed. The Kingdom cards were points for having houses next to the water, having a horizontal row, and having a large settlement. The bonus tile that let you move houses into the water was incredibly useful for all three of these, but there are only 2 of that bonus, so the first to players to be able to get it had a really big advantage and won by a large margin.

We have played this multiple times this month.

We like it as two - however with two there is very little interaction and very few screw you moments. We like the way it plays and we even have the expansion for it. We haven't broken out the expansion for it yet as we still haven't had all the variety from the base box yet!

I can see people saying they don't like it as to but its great for us!

Split 2 games with my wife This is one of my favorites, and is one of the best examples of a game that rewards repeated plays. At first glance it may seem too luck dependent, but experience teaches otherwise. I own 2 expansions and have yet to use them. Anyone care to recommend one or both of them?

Kingdom Builder
My game-of-the-month is not new to me; in fact, I first played it back in 2013. Not only do I still enjoy the buggy, Germ-glish Android app, but since fellow GCLer smorange sold me base game + Crossroads expansion, I've introduced it to a number of people: Bryan, Kris, Kamloops Board Game Club, my students, and my nephlets.

Overall, I'd say that my gamers like it well enough, but none of them love it, or are as willing to play it as I am. I used to be more lukewarm on the game myself - in fact, I sold my copy after the novelty wore off - but have since come around to it as the perfect high-variability pseudo-abstract game. And I don't mean that as some sort of niche, backhanded complement. I am not much for abstracts or dry euros, but this game really offers something smooth and puzzly, and I really enjoy it. I will never love it; I will always play it. Hopefully it grows on some other people in my play groups, but as is, I get enough plays of it here and there to have justified the purchase. I'm even eyeing up Kingdom Builder: Marshlands...

Carcassonne: Gold Rush
I don't want to damn this game with faint praise, but it is a big, fat J.A.R.C. (just another re-themed Carcassonne). If I had to choose from all the non-expanded versions of Carcassonne that I have played, I'd put this up against Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers as my favourite. (Then I would probably pick Gold Rush because I like the theme and art more, even though H&G is the better game mechanically.)

What's good about Gold Rush? The art is clean, and well done. The gold mine/mining mechanic reminds me of the sheep from Carcassonne: Hills & Sheep, but gold is easier to get. The trains-on-rails in place of roads make thematic sense, and couple nicely with the city/rail connections (ex-monasteries). You are making the same sorts of decisions as you would in most Carcassones, so - like GMT COIN Series - you should probably pick the one with the theme that interests you most.

Castles of Mad King Ludwig
I like Suburbia, so I expected to like this, but the descriptions of gameplay made me think I'd like it less. When Brett brought it to KBGC, I basically dragged him to a table to teach it to me. It was a memorable experience for several reasons:

1. I liked it about as much as Suburbia. Linking all the rooms together for points while keeping an eye on goals, while trying to price things well is more fun than it sounds.

2. We had some new people at board game club that night, and I just about died laughing. The kid (14? 17?) who joined us for CoMKL was opinionated, naively bull-headed, endlessly talkative, and unintentionally hilarious in just about every way. He had never played the game, nor had he ever played anything like the game, but he had the blissful temerity to try and give us instructions on how to play as we set it up. I have never been so quietly amused in my whole life.

Anyways, I think I'm supposed to say something about the game, but I just can't stop laughing as I type this. laugh

So yeah, CoMKL is fun. Get buildings, position for points, good times.

New Acquisitions

A Distant Plain - I like COIN games, and Canada has a connection to this conflict.

Falling Sky: The Gallic Revolt Against Caesar - Reputed to be one of two simpler COINs, and I like the theme and art on this one better than Cuba Libre. Just set this up on my table.

Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 - All aboard the hype train!! HYPE greentraingreentraingreentraingreentraingreentraingreentrain ME

Added to trade pile
thumbsdown Oh My Goods! - I love Ora et Labora. I know O&L. This, sir, is no O&L. Too simple. Not enough combo devel.

thumbsdown Nations: The Dice Game - Has some fans in 1 Player Guild. Not to my tastes. JASE. No distictiveness in techs or civs.

thumbsup Fire in the Lake - Only because I can't justify owning four different COIN games.

SOLD/TRADED
Lord of the Rings and Lord of the Rings: Friends & Foes and Lord of the Rings: Sauron. I have had each of these since release, and letting them go was difficult, so deep was the sentimental attachment. But the Lord of the Rings "fad" has passed, and even my LotR-loving friends found the mechanicalness of the game off-putting and dated. I still think Sauron is a brilliant addition to the game, but at the end of the day, it's three games with some value just taking up space on my shelf. There is no serious reason to believe the games will get played more often ever, so I wish them well in their new home.

Ohh that tickles

I have two games currently rated 10 and as you have both of them in your cupboard, so it’s a pretty easy choice. They also play well two player, so it’s not a problem if no one else is around. So it’s Kingdom Builder followed by Grand Austria Hotel.

Kingdom Builder is the prototype for my favourite kind of game. One that has a fairly short rule set, an hour or less play time, a lot of depth for its complexity and length and lots of variety. On the other hand I love Grand Austria Hotel for how well all the moving parts integrate and how thematically it all fits together. (Though I am not quite sure why the Emperor is so interested in the Hotel business.)

As for a third game, how about Roll for the Galaxy. I tried for so long to like Race for the Galaxy. I even got the first two expansions, but I finally admitted to myself that I did not actually like it. When Roll was announced I did not take much notice of it, but the more I read about it, the more interested I got. I finally got a copy and loved it. It’s everything I wanted Race to be and the most innovative part that makes it so much easier, is writing on the tiles what they actually do.
