2 weeks behind with my BoardGameGeek posts, but fortunately not behind at all with great boardgaming.
Yes, this will really be about the gaming week before 13th July.

Monday

DOG Cards - 1 play, 2 players

Quite a new game from Kiesling and Kramer, played for the first time. It is very simple card game just with numbers and no theme at all. I lost.

Star Realms - 1 play, 2 players

After losing previous game, I tried to take a revenge in space battles. Not this time, huge loss with 0 against 49.

Legacy: The Testament of Duke de Crecy - 1 play, 2 players

And here comes first win of the week for me. Opponent got the mission I think is overpowered. When I understood it in the middle of game, I thought it is over. But somehow the income mechanic I created was powerful enough, and opponent didn't get friends she needed. Just 2 point difference in the end, but win is win. The morale should be never give up.

Tuesday

Tortuga - 2 plays, 2 players

Abstract gaming on a beach. Usually we stick with Gigamic games, but this was time for turtles trying to cross the island. This abstract also proved itself to be stable in strong wind. Always nice to get some gaming on seaside. I won both of plays.

Wednesday

Port Royal - 1 play, 3 players

Our gaming group partners returned from their vacation. Second year in a row there was one game they played like hundred times. OK, a little exaggeration, this time it was only 20+ games, but last year they really played Hanabi 80 times. Anyway, owner was eager to demonstrate me the game, so we played it. There are some interesting concepts, but overall it felt like one of the many card games. I was second in 3 player game.

Friday

Port Royal - 1 play, 4 players

Another play of this card game with the same company plus my girlfriend. Games owner won once again, so evidently experience matters. I still wasn't impressed, and most likely will not be even with more plays.

Wilderness - 2 plays, 4 players

Two great plays of this incredibly hard game of survival. I won the first one (because everyone else died), and was close to winning the second one as well, when the only opponent alive sent bear towards me. It was too much, but at least my character died in a fight. The game is really hard, and player elimination aspect may scare some off, but it is one of the most thematic games I've ever played.

Saturday

Love Letter - 1 play, 4 players

2 new players, and one of them took the early lead. Still my girlfriend managed to win this one, but I was close enough with 3 letters.

Camel Up - 1 play, 4 players

After very successful first leg I failed in all 3 next ones, so it was enough for second place only.

Dixit Odyssey - 2 plays, 10 and 7 players

Two Dixit plays with large number of people. I didn't think it would work, but it did, and almost everyone seemed having fun. The game was new to me (have played regular Dixit before), and I liked illustrations in Odyssey better than in base game. And by the way - I won the second game.

BANG! The Dice Game - 3 plays, 7 and 6 players

After some people left the party after Dixit (hopefully not because of Dixit), we tried another party game. Only 2 of has had played it before, but everyone was having fun. Many players were comparing it to Mafia (our version of Werewolf) because of hidden identities. I won all 3 of the plays - twice as Outlaw, and once as Sheriff. Actually it was the first time I remember Sheriff winning, but with more players (when Deputy comes in play), winning for good guys seems not too hard anymore.

Sunday

Dixit Odyssey - 1 play, 6 players

Another Dixit fun. I finished in the middle of a pack this time.

Smash Up - 1 play, 2 players

After getting home from a party we still had some fuel in our tanks, so Smash Up world witnessed a battle between Dinosaur Aliens and Zombie Ninjas. I have read and heard that Ninja Zombies is one of the most powerful combinations, and my Dinosaur Aliens felt it on their skin. Still - I managet to collect 14 points, which wasn't enough to win.

An older game that have my interest. I love the survival theme but I hate the hexagon tiles Also a lot of luck involved with the dice and I think that could be devastating for this game. Will need a closer look

ou have been robbed and left for dead in the middle of nowhere. Without proper clothes or equipment, you must reach the civilized village before you die from hunger, thirst or exhaustion. But there are wild animals lurking, mountains blocking the way, and a wide variety of unpleasant diseases waiting to invade your body. When you think it cannot possibly get any worse, you feel a taunting raindrop on your cheek…

In Wilderness, 2 to 8 players race to the nearest civilized village – but the village is not near, and the way there is not paved. You will have to find water, search for food, avoid wolves, bears and snakes, endure sicknesses and keep your strength up to be able to get there.

Each player's health is tracked with three parameters: thirst, hunger and exhaustion. Every turn you get more thirsty and hungry and exhausted. The thirstier and hungrier you are, the more exhausted you become, and that determines how much energy you will have each turn. If the exhaustion hits the bottom, you die. The energy is used to walk, but also to search for food or rest. To regain your strength (reduce your exhaustion) you also have to sleep. One of the biggest risks is encountering a predator since they attack you with two dice and you defend with only one and increase exhaustion equal to the difference. And they can scent you from a mile away...

The game board is discovered gradually as players progress across it, and there are six turns each day (four day turns, two night turns). Each day has different special rules and each landscape tile has its own challenges. Each landscape tile has 21 hexagonal areas in a big triangle and each area has a terrain type such as mountain, wood, swamp and so on, and the tile may also include a predator lair. Different terrain types have their benefits and challenges. The combination and orientation of different landscape tiles make the way forward uncertain and new every game. To top it off, the players have a limited supply of cards that can be played to help yourself or thwart your opponent in certain situations.

Besides the normal six-tile board, the game can be played in an easy, short version by having only four landscape tiles, or it can be played in a challenging long version by including all eight available landscape tiles.

The hand-made edition of Wilderness sold out at Spiel 2011. FryxGames is releasing a professionally published version in the first half of 2012, and this version will have improved game play and graphics. For example, search for food has replaced hunting. It is not very likely that you have the equipment you need to hunt. Instead, food will be slightly easier to find but will not fill your stomach as much as before.

2-8 players
90 minutes

With 5 new players, it usually takes about 80 minutes for a short game (4 landscape tiles). I've used Wilderness in my biology teaching. It's easy to relate to the theme, has connections to biology and allows players to bash each others in a limited way. Great adventure!
