Taught by Heather. This is what reminded me that enjoy card games and would like to play more of them. This is a trick taking game, where the winner gets control of the area contested. First one with three connecting provinces wins the game. The lesson that we learned here is that it really isn't about getting the third province, it's about getting the second connecting one. Once you've done that, you've got a lot of avenues for getting the third province. A nice little surprise.

Precious little gaming this week. Well, somewhat precious.
1x Condottiere *new to me *won

I took Saturday/Sunday off of gaming to do spend a nice, Spring weekend with my family. So the only gaming I got in was last Tuesday night, and it was a short night at that.
Played my first ever game of Condottiere. I've played similar games before...Ivanhoe and Iliad come to mind...but the spatial aspect was a welcome addition. Overall, I liked my play of Condottiere, though I thought I got pretty lucky with my hand on the last round of play. Granted, I'd set my position up pretty well (out of the final 7 territories, 5 would have been victory for me, and 2 for an opponent), but once I saw that last hand I knew I pretty much had it locked.
After that the table wanted to play Cyclades. Considering my lack of gaming plans for the week, and the fact that there weren't any other options at the time, I participated. I'm not a fan of Cyclades, but this time was made worse by the addition of the Hades Expansion. I consider the mythological creature deck to be an abomination of luck-of-the-draw...it seems no matter what strategic position you stake out, there's some card somewhere that, if it comes up, will totally set you back by an obscene amount.
Granted, I'll begrudgingly admit the ultimate winner did demonstrate quite a bit of cleverness and skill at the end there, but I'd long since lost interest

My god this game is brilliant. All the new players took to it right away, especially Georgia, who seemed unbeatable. But Ben somehow found a way back for the win, and even Lorenzo won a couple of areas eventually

Fastest game of Condottiere ever. I spent half my hand, thinking that we would be drawing cards soon. Still, since I had ~11 points of power versus Chris' 35, it probably wouldn't have mattered much. (Not sure how much Andy had).

Simple to teach and simple to play. Scales well and plays just fine with anywhere between the 2-6. Has the "feel" of a cross between a trick-taking and climbing game, so traditional card players should adapt well to it. Accessible and suitable for kids. The strategy in which territories to contest, the option to pass when out-manned, and the special card abilities all help to mitigate runs of bad luck and provide players with meaningful choices. Not overly long. Artwork is first-rate and the game is compact and portable. Theme, though light, is interesting. Under $20 on-line.

We played the Fantasy Flight small board version of this (which Andrew found out is very different than the Euro Games version). Having played both versions, Andrew prefers the Fantasy Flight version. The game can best be summed up by Jeff’s quote: "You’re putting the faith in the three of us, and in no other time in history has that happened."

A five player game between David, Stephen, Eric, Warren and myself.
After some tactical play, I delivered a victory with 5 territories through a lucky last hand versus Eric.
The Hard Luck award went to David who battled valiantly for most territories but didn't end up with a single one.
