One of the best auction games around. The "card game" version doesn't hold a candle to the original.

Three players with this, and an end of convention stress near table flip over a rules disagreement. ... Okay, not really near table flip. But we were all getting tired.

Managed to wander into an Oxfam while visiting my parents yesterday and found a copy of the 1996 Mayfair edition of Modern Art for £1.99. It is complete and looks hardly used. The box looks to have had a minor encounter with a spillage of some kind, but the damage is minimal. Pretty good find

OK, one time Randy Beaman had to take baths with his brother. So one time his little brother took a potty in the bathtub .....and now Randy Beaman gets to take showers alone. 'K, bye.
One time, OK, see, one time Randy Beaman's little brother ate Pop Rocks and drank a soda at the same time and his head exploded! 'K, bye.

As someone who majored in Art History and gladly joins on the bandwagon hating American Modern Art I loved this game. I still think the mechanics are fun and the strategies are variable without an ability to use a similar strategy over multiple games.
My Group, half hating the constant need for math and the other half hating the auction play-style have led to an exiled game and a sad owner of an unplayed game.

For a longest time, I've always thought I disliked auction games. We've never really enjoyed the auction aspects of non-auction games, so I figured a game of nothing but auctions wouldn't sit well with anyone. Bids started out at paltry amounts as people started tentatively bidding. Nobody was sure how much money they should be parting with, and I wasn't certain that we'd make it to the end of the game at that pace. But after the second round, people got looser with the purse-strings, and bids started creeping up. Much to my surprise, by the end everyone was really enjoying themselves. There's still a part of me that looks skeptically at auction games, but this has certainly opened my eyes to their potential.
Last Will I had been looking forward to Last Will for a while, as my wife had been a big fan of Shipyard, although ironically, she still hasn't played this one... I've had the chance to play it with 3, 4, and 5 over the past month and I've really enjoyed each. The theme is a lot of fun, as is announcing every action on your turn with a snooty accent. There are some interesting card combinations to discover, but part of me wonders just how much replayability the game will have in the long run.

Last week, I had a brief discussion (amid work and other real-world distractions) regarding the tension between two views of board game design: as a commercial activity and as an art form.
When thinking/talking/writing about board games, are you more likely to approach the subject as a consumer (concerned with your own enjoyment) or as an afficianado (concerned with questions of objective quality or with the development of the hobby more generally)?
To the extent it helps you answer this question, consider the following:
1. Do you spend more time on BGG researching games you think you might want to buy or reading others talk about games that you've already played?
2. Do you ever find yourself acknowledging that a game is great despite the fact that you don't enjoy playing it?
3. Do you believe that games should be learned in a "proper" order (e.g. Caylus before Agricola) so that newer players can appreciate the development of the industry?

I have only played this once, but it is probably the game in this group I am most likely to play again.
Other Candidates
Terrace - I recently acquired this interesting abstract strategy game. I have also only played this one once, so can't really judge it, but am not likely to get my wife to try it, so it will be a while before it gets played again.
Times to Remember - This is the only game here that I have played more than once. It is a pretty good historical trivia game, but really requires that the players/teams be evenly matched, usually by being about the same age. It is really designed for baby boomers. The mechanic of picking a playing piece based on how SURE you are of the date makes the difference in this one.
