Also yours is in Shrink making it more valuable as I stated in the comments section further down. I'd say the price your asking is fair.

Three players with this, and an end of convention stress near table flip over a rules disagreement. ... Okay, not really near table flip. But we were all getting tired.

Managed to wander into an Oxfam while visiting my parents yesterday and found a copy of the 1996 Mayfair edition of Modern Art for £1.99. It is complete and looks hardly used. The box looks to have had a minor encounter with a spillage of some kind, but the damage is minimal. Pretty good find

MA: the Card Game isn't quite as bad as Ra: the Dice Game, but it shares the delusion that the scoring system was the important thing about the original games, rather than the genius auction mechanics.

As someone who majored in Art History and gladly joins on the bandwagon hating American Modern Art I loved this game. I still think the mechanics are fun and the strategies are variable without an ability to use a similar strategy over multiple games.

My Group, half hating the constant need for math and the other half hating the auction play-style have led to an exiled game and a sad owner of an unplayed game.

I was just about to mention this very game for different reasons.

My group is comprised of math whizzes and business majors. They started crunching numbers and now the entire game is decided in round one. After that it is all about making the optimal bid. One variant that has spiced it up a little is getting paid for each item you put up for bid. But that kind of throws the game off balance.

For a longest time, I've always thought I disliked auction games. We've never really enjoyed the auction aspects of non-auction games, so I figured a game of nothing but auctions wouldn't sit well with anyone. Bids started out at paltry amounts as people started tentatively bidding. Nobody was sure how much money they should be parting with, and I wasn't certain that we'd make it to the end of the game at that pace. But after the second round, people got looser with the purse-strings, and bids started creeping up. Much to my surprise, by the end everyone was really enjoying themselves. There's still a part of me that looks skeptically at auction games, but this has certainly opened my eyes to their potential.

Last Will
I had been looking forward to Last Will for a while, as my wife had been a big fan of Shipyard, although ironically, she still hasn't played this one... I've had the chance to play it with 3, 4, and 5 over the past month and I've really enjoyed each. The theme is a lot of fun, as is announcing every action on your turn with a snooty accent. There are some interesting card combinations to discover, but part of me wonders just how much replayability the game will have in the long run.

Last week, I had a brief discussion (amid work and other real-world distractions) regarding the tension between two views of board game design: as a commercial activity and as an art form.

When thinking/talking/writing about board games, are you more likely to approach the subject as a consumer (concerned with your own enjoyment) or as an afficianado (concerned with questions of objective quality or with the development of the hobby more generally)?

To the extent it helps you answer this question, consider the following:

1. Do you spend more time on BGG researching games you think you might want to buy or reading others talk about games that you've already played?

2. Do you ever find yourself acknowledging that a game is great despite the fact that you don't enjoy playing it?

3. Do you believe that games should be learned in a "proper" order (e.g. Caylus before Agricola) so that newer players can appreciate the development of the industry?

I'm definitely more of a consumer than afficionado. As much as I appreciate a well crafted game, I buy games that I want to play and enjoy. I think the question of objective quality depends more on one's level of knowledge and experience than on one's specific interest in the hobby as such.

I think it's inevitable, even through osmosis, that one learns more about the hobby the more one plays games, but I don't think that one needs to know (or even care, really) about what's going on in the industry. Kind of like wine - you might learn that you prefer French wines over Italian ones, but that doesn't mean you care about Bordeaux futures, even though you might hear that 2011 was a highly variable year.

To turn your second question on its side, there are over 55,000 games listed on this site, and that's probably not all of them, and there will be hundreds of new releases this year (and the next and the next). Even if I apply Sturgeon's maxim that 90% of everything is crap, there will inevitably be some great games out there that I don't get to play, never mind great games that I don't like or want to play. There are some absolutely fantastic games on the ACW, but the ACW holds no interest for me. Agricola is a fine game - I just happen to dislike it.

On that final note, I don't think order matters. I don't need to read Victorian era novels to appreciate a well crafted novel today. Besides, why force people to sit through a lot of crap to get to the good stuff. I'm firmly with JC on this one - talk to the potential gamer, learn what they like, and try something that seems ought to be a fit. Someone who's ready intellectually and temperamentally to play a six hour session of 18xx does not need to go through TTR to get there.

I tend to research games that I might want to buy or games that I'm about to play more than I do about games I've already played. I don't think it was always this way, but then for the first while my collection grew much more slowly so I "savoured" those that I had.

Yes. Power Grid is probably the best example of a game that I acknowledge is great, but am just completely disinterested in. In my second play of it, I thought, wow, I love how distinct and thematic the phases of this game are, but how naturally they flow one after another. So why is it so boring?

No. If there is an order for games to be played, it's linked to shared mechanics and complexity (and the level of gamer that I'm teaching it to). So if Agricola is easier to learn than Caylus, d@mn it, my group will play Agricola first.

Even though I tend towards being a consumer, I do still have an interest in the development of the hobby as a whole and even in the design and development of individual games. I just like to know how things got from X to Y.

I read and watch one or two reviews of games I am thinking of buying, and I rarely read about games I have already played. Maybe only after the first game if I have unclear spots in the gameplay.

Not in the proper order, it would bump into too many logistic and other barriers in my case, but it would be nice if I could play all the legendary classic games once or twice at least. There are games I would love to play like Brass, T&E, TS, etc.

Yes, as a consumer, but I like to discover elements of other games, or being told if I read about a game I have not payed yet that it developed from X and Y games or can be related to that game.

I don't read about them per se, but there are a few games I subscribe to for the purpose of answering rules questions (though I am usually beaten to the punch). Innovation and BSG come to mind.

I don't research games at all anymore. I simply hear about up and coming titles through the grapevine (subscriptions, GCL, and quick perusals of the front page).

I find myself acknowledging that a game is great at particular things that I myself don't care for. Not always but sometimes. It's not so much a matter of greatness as "this would probably be a great fit for so-and-so, or for that crowd."

No, but appreciating those kinds of lineages can be fun in and of itself, if the games are individually fun. Earlier games can be useful to teach to show a mechanic in a more accessible or less complex form.

...

Ultimately aficionados may simply be consumers who like to talk about "why." I'm an aficionado, but my own enjoyment remains essential. I've just developed an ability to articulate why I enjoy specific games and not others, and to find patterns in that. I can explain myself, but I'm not sure that means my "fun" is somehow different from the consumer's.

1992 - Modern Art

I have only played this once, but it is probably the game in this group I am most likely to play again.

Other Candidates

Terrace - I recently acquired this interesting abstract strategy game. I have also only played this one once, so can't really judge it, but am not likely to get my wife to try it, so it will be a while before it gets played again.

Times to Remember - This is the only game here that I have played more than once. It is a pretty good historical trivia game, but really requires that the players/teams be evenly matched, usually by being about the same age. It is really designed for baby boomers. The mechanic of picking a playing piece based on how SURE you are of the date makes the difference in this one.
