Snowdonia (69)
My 2013 ranking:
33

# of Plays (since 2009):
18

Likes:
Just seems so different from other games. Like it was made with tons of love (hard to explain that…..just a feeling). Great decisions to be made. You need to watch everyone else (it’s definitely not multi-player solitaire). The board does a wonderful job of explaining what’s happening in each phase. The way weather impacts the game is cool, so not every game is the same. Cards you pick up early can give you some direction to your play and I always like that. I always like it when there is a separate board for different numbers of players, or as this game handled it, cards that can be placed over action spaces to change things depending on number of players.

Dislikes:
I’d prefer names on each of the action spaces (“Stock Yard”, etc.). I feel like I saw an early prototype that had that and it looked cool.

Tidbit:
Allen gave me the Snowdonia: Jungfraubahn & Mount Washington expansion which adds snow, more trains, and some other stuff. Strongly recommend it for fans of the game. It’s small (like a deck of cards).

Memorable Game:
Unfortunately it might be the last time when there were 5 players. Too many and too slow. Feel the same way about Hansa Teutonica.

Question:
Snowdonia is a train game without route building. Can you think of another one?

(1) Snowdonia - I really like this game. I think it's a light game, but non-gamers I've played the game with find it involved... maybe even too involved. Anyway, it presents a lightish game with changing decisions and unique experiences every time with how the weather and white cubes work out. I'm surprised at how much I really like it.

(2) Zoowaboo; Loopin' Louie - Both are very fun games to play with four kids (well, three other kids) or four adults. This time around we were all adults playing these.

(3) Chess - Played Dane in a game without my queen. I won, but he played great and really held on well for a while. He's been playing this game for hours every day with his best friend. He taught his friend the game and then they just sat and played forever... he's taught at least one other friend too. And, he seems to get all (or, at least, almost all) of the rules straight. One night, I put the game away and he called me at work the next day to find out where I put it so he could get it out and play it again.

On Saturday night, Marie and I went downtown (about 2-3 miles away ) to hear a friend of ours play trumpet in the Neophonic Jazz Orchestra. It was fantastic and right on the edge of Lake Mendota at the UW Memorial Union. We arrived right as the sun was setting and it was a lovely scene, so I captured a shot of my lovely lady.

A slow start as the busy of the week kept us from doing much but an interesting package showed up on Wednesday and its contents were examined over the next couple of days so I felt ready to give it a go on Friday night. The game, one I have come close to picking up several times, was Snowdonia. Neither of us knew what to do (the rules are clear enough but you have many options) so we just got stuck in - under unfeasibly sunny skies for the first 3 rounds. My wife did more laying track and picked up a couple of contracts that scored off that, I got the #1 train which helped me do a lot of digging and indeed I should have got more contracts that gelled with that, though I did build quite well too. In the end though, her better scoring contracts and track points overcame my surveying and building so she took the inaugural win, 110-102.

So I enjoyed it, my wife got a bit ttred toward the end, grumbling about it getting a bit mathy for her - evaluating some of your options can be a little involved. But lots of things you can try, so I think we have a winner. I knew a game that still gets talked about regularly a few years after release had to have some staying power.

Then Saturday was game night. Our hosts had particularly requested a couple of games and since a 5th would be arriving soon, we got right into the 4 only one: Guildhall. Just the 6 base game guilds. It was a good game, close throughout. Then I got 2 chapters complete and was waiting for my next turn to claim the win. The 2 ladies could not prevent me but Tom bought the only 5VP card...only for another 5VP to turn up so I collected that and a 4 for my win. What a great game.

Now all 5 of us set up Lords of Waterdeep. Sadly our hostess, who had been awoken at 5am by children started to flag and by round 3 she just gave it up and went to bed. Then my wife proceeded to give a lesson on how to play a builder strategy, making great use of the ambassador to get first dibs on the building hall (and the zoarstar for when that was blocked). She rounded that off with a couple of 20+ point quests and just demolished all of us. Sad for our hostess, so I actually left the game with them so maybe they can play it when she is feeling more up to it.

Tom (a young father himself) then departed, so we were 3. So we played Wyatt Earp, which was good fun, a big haul from the reward for Butch Cassidy put me well ahead so my next target fled to a hideout and I watched as both of my opponents just picked up the Wyatt Earp cards while I got none. However, one of my own on my dear lady's Billy the Kid meant I got some of that money and just enough to get over the end game trigger with the rest a little way back.

We rounded it off with Basari, a game which I profess not to like too much but for whatever reason, my curmudgeonly dislike didn't manifest and I quite enjoyed our 3 rounds of 2nd guessing each other while the others collected vast piles of gems and I played the in-round points game...it ended really close, our host Rick winning by a point or 2.

Sunday relaxing games included another round of base-game Guildhall, in which I got schooled - it was pretty impressive how she got 4 or 5 guilds up to 4 cards in each and then suddenly 2 chapters done, 7VP card, more actions, bang boom game done.

And of course no week complete without Star Realms, which came out in epic mode, both decks honed down but surviving due to bases and trade ship boosts. I was having trouble though, my authority dwindling and her still healthy but my blob combos started to hit. So I was gaining but barely surviving then finally I was knocked out...te turn before I was about to do 42 points of damage (all my big ships in my hand as I lost). Curses!

Travis picked out this game, but was not his official birthday game.
First play for César and Janelle.

I could have ended the game by building the final rail but ultimately decided against it. I was afraid Travis was going to end it but didn't.
On the final turn, Travis advanced his surveyor 3 spots. I was able to get 21 points in stations (plus finish a contract).

I had a few more rail/station/contract points than Travis, but his 11 point surveyor was enough for the win.

Amazing game... I love the angst created in this game, and actually in all games that feature the "wanting to do everything but can't" tension. And in under an hour, it's a blast to play.

I opted for some lighter fare last night as I needed to get things ready for my anniversary today. I had this up on my shelf for a while and I don't really play this as often as I should, despite the good cube pulling element that helps to move the game along. I decided to stay with the base game scenario instead of the expansions that I have last night and used Train #5. I went cruising right along through the game - the weather at the beginning was not good at all - for much of anything - just rain, more rain, some fog, more rain, etc; but soon the weather turned for the better and allowed me to lay track efficiently. The contract cards also helped me gain some timely actions (+1 track when laying, double digging, +2 resources, etc), and helped to give me a solid 184 points last night.

With my love of Loyang this one has become a new favorite also in the same vein. A thinky but quick (under an hour) playing euro where the theme shines.
I finished my plays with all the base engines on the base game today with #7 Ralph! I did better than last time and scored a 182. On to Snowdonia: Jungfraubahn & Mount Washington and Snowdonia: The Daffodil Line! Though not today

I'll throw in the caveat that I'm not a solo gamer, so I don't have first hand experience at that count, but I've heard good things. For 2-5, however, I know from my own plays that it's great. The available actions tighten up at lower player counts (similar to Agricola). And the choose-your-own victory conditions make each game different.

Played this solo a few times. It plays very smoothly as a solo. The actions aren't terribly interesting, but everything meshes together into a very tight game about timing. I love the variety with the different engines, and I hope expansions... expand on that

This is a very good eurogame, but still grabs me emotionally too.

Where is the fun? As you play you clear the rubble, lay the road bed, send a scout out, and even select locomotives. It isn't a simulation, but it hearkens to that aesthetic. Further, the game forces you to cope with the effects of the weather. After a few days of fog and rain, you begin to feel like you are slogging against the mountain.

No. 12
(last year: 14)

While a few euros tumbled a few places due to tough competition (see below), Snowdonia has held its own thanks to the variety of tracks and its simply ingenious 'game plays you' mechanisms. The weather constantly ruins my life, players steal MY actions and I love it every stinking time. (Plays: 23)

Oi! Hands off...

While Becky got drawn into The Voyages Of Marco Polo (like Troyes without the nastiness, she says), I introduced Darren, Sian, Jimmy and Jerome to a full-on 5P Snowdonia. In a game of three definite phases - sun, rain, sun - and surprisingly little fog, I went for an all-out excavation strategy, but was scuppered on more than one occasion by Jerome and Sian's bonus card excavations and my silly neglect in not taking the available 'excavating train'. Sian, indeed, was acquiring quite an appetite for the contract cards and had snapped up five of them by the end of the game. But she was only good enough for second place behind Jimmy and a solid 48-point end game bonus.
