Snowdonia is a great game that plays 1-5. And a user just contributed a file that lets you play the game without a board: https://www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/115786/portable-snowd...

I also second the recommendation for Friday.

I wish you the best.

At first I was skeptical, all these weird British railways, only 2 workers, and the pieces don't even go on the board? But the game is pleasant, fast, easy to introduce and has expansions for variety.

Games That Have Stood The Test of Time

Snowdonia - 3 plays then, 9 plays since then - Snowdonia was my Favorite New to me game a year ago and it's done a good job of standing the test of time. My wife and I have enjoyed it from time to time, it's been part of my occasional solo queue, and we recently started trying out and enjoying the expansion.

Tokaido - 4 plays then, 11 plays since then - Some of these plays were online at BGA, but after learning the game at PretzCon a year ago, I acquired my own physical copy from an auction. The copy was pimped out by the previous owner with actual yen coins, which make for a great incentive to continue to bring the game out and show off.

War of the Ring (second edition) - 2 plays then, 1 play since then - Even though I only played the game once more since learning it a year ago, I'm declaring this one stood the test of time. It is an epic game after all and I knew, due to its scope, it would only be an occasionally played game anyway. I'm okay with that, though, because it's a great experience. I'm planning a demo of the game at Spielbound in May to ensure it continues to get some love.

Paperback - 2 plays then, 3 plays since then - My wife proudly declares this as one of the few word games she'll play with me. I'll take it!

Games I Haven't Played Since But Want To

Ora et Labora - 2 plays then, 0 plays since then - I love the theme and it is a really fun game. I was really excited to acquire it a year ago at a great price. But the static set-up cuts down on the replayability, making this one probably only an occasional play. I need to find an occasion for it soon, though. I've been thinking about it.

Krosmaster: Arena - 1 play then, 0 plays since then - I regret not playing this one again since my initial playthrough. I love those minis. All those expansions sure are daunting, though.

The Builders: Middle Ages - 1 play then, 0 plays since then - I enjoyed my play of this a year ago with a friend's copy and added it to my wishlist. It hasn't found its way into my collection yet, though.

Games I Haven't Played Since and Don't Need to Play Again

Coup - 1 play then, 0 plays since then - One of the more interesting social deduction games I've played. But that's not saying much. Social deduction really doesn't excite me and it's something I tend to go out of my way to avoid, which means I'm okay not playing this again.

Cosmic Wimpout - 1 play then, 0 plays since then - This game was just stupid. Random dice rolling luck-fest. Bleh.

Evaluation – Actual workers for a worker placement game; can’t beat that! You also have something to play with if you find that you don’t like the game (and these particular ones would seem to be especially well suited to any local sandbox)!
Alternate Suggestion – See previous entry.

Just got this game and played it twice solo. My first play was, ummm, instructive. The game has a lovely little engine that should make every game a new experience.

I've been enjoying this game since January and got to play it twice this week, once with my wife and once with a new gaming group. It's always fun and I'm always happy to see someone from my gaming group pull it out of my bag while I'm playing another game.

One play of this game this week. It's a new game to my wife and I and we've enjoyed it quite a bit. We are still playing without any of the modules and I'd like to play it with a bigger group.

I really enjoy this game and I was glad to get to play this with some new people at a new board game group I attended. Everyone played well with the collecting unique civilization cards proving dominant with first and second place collecting 7 and 6 unique cards each, respectively. Still that left plenty of space for the other two players to earn lots of points pursuing other strategies.

Played a five player game of this game on Thursday after playing a 3 player game the prior Wednesday both with basic set-up. In the 5-player game I really enjoyed watching the myriad of different approaches the other players chose.

My wife is excellent at puzzles and pattern matching (she frequently spots four-leafed clover when walking on grass without really even seeming to be looking) and I am not. But, I bought this game because I knew she would like it...and she did. She enjoyed thoroughly thrashing me.

I bought this game after playing it at my game club. It's a little random for me for now but my wife and I enjoyed splitting four games.

My wife always asks for this. I managed to keep her to two games. Enjoyed both, especially as I was more successful than usual.

I volunteer with Big Brothers and Big Sisters and it took me a long time to find things that my Little Brother would enjoy. He really enjoyed Smash Up but since trying King of Tokyo thats the first thing he asks to play when we get together. In May we'll be celebrating his 13th birthday and our fourth year as a "match". I'll be buying him this game so he can play with his friends.

Age of Steam: The Alps

Plays: 1

Winner: The "Prone to Sabotage" Award

123456

To be clear, most Age of Steam maps are prone to sabotage, but this map is even more so. See, the trick on this map is that there's a mountain in the middle of all the maps you see in the picture above, and you have tunnels going through connecting each map. The only way to build into a map is to build a straight track directly into the tunnel, so if players intentionally hose the tunnels by building any other piece of track into that hex where a straight would normally go, then that tunnel won't be built. In our one play, that only happened with one tunnel, but we discussed the possibility of all players working that strategy and locking up all the tunnels. We weren't thrilled with the idea.

Regardless, the game has its own unique challenges, since the tunnels tend to isolate players into their own regions. I liked it, and I imagine that any other Age of Steam fanatics would like it, too.

Age of Steam: Reversteam

Plays: 1

Winner: The "Ted Alspach Hates Everyone" Award

123456

This looks like a fairly benign map. It's a mirror image of the Rust Belt map in the base game, with the twist being that a good stops at the first city where the color doesn't match (save for black, which can receive no goods; black cities are essentially six-exit towns). But once the game gets underway, the building and deliveries get tricky.

To give an example of how tricky the map is, you have to understand that we were at a convention as we played it, where other players at the convention, playing games at other tables, would sometimes erupt in a loud "OHHHH-HHHHH!" as someone pulled off some killer move. When I made the longest (and only!) 5-link delivery in the game, I felt like we should have reacted the same way. It was quite a moment for me.

Anyway, folks who want a new experience with Age of Steam should give this expansion map a go. You might want to try it with advanced players only, though.

The City

Plays: 1

Winner: The "Meh." Award

123456

I remember when this game first came out, shortly after Race for the Galaxy took the world by storm. I tried getting it a couple of times, but always had trouble finding one at a reasonable price, and then enough time passed that I lost interest in it. At a game con, I saw that someone else had it, and I asked to learn it with him.

Despite it being all in German, and no one at the table knowing much German, we hacked our way through the game. It seemed like an OK game, and I could see shades of Race for the Galaxy underneath the veneer, but I didn't find it to be a particularly memorable game. You work toward making combos, but there are certain dependencies in the builds that limit how fast you can get your engine going. It was engaging, but not so much that I felt I had to get a copy OMGNOW!

Folks who like Race for the Galaxy might want to give it a go to see what they think of this proto-RftG game, but I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to do so. Race is a near-perfect game, and I don't see this game changing anyone's mind about that.

Euphoria

Plays: 1

Winner: The "Not So Good That I Was Able to Resist Selling It for a Premium" Award

123456

This game is a holdover from when I would Kickstart a lot of different games. In fact, part of the reason I decided to back this one was because I had backed Viticulture, and then had to cancel my pledge because I broke my foot (surgeries ain't cheap). When Jamey reached out to me about canceling my pledge, I explained what happened, and he gave me the opportunity to purchase the game at the Kickstarter price once my finances leveled out. With that kind of customer service, it was easy to back a future project of his.

The game intrigued me, and I was excited to play it. For the most part, I enjoyed it, but it didn't wow me like I expected it to. I felt a little restricted with how I placed my workers, since I was often placing my workers on the least efficient spots to build up for a larger future move. Once I made that future move, I felt like everything reset, and I had to go through building up that engine all over again. Maybe I was the one being inefficient, but I felt like it was a game of small gains over a long length of time.

I did like the way the actions were balanced out, and I'd definitely play it again, but since I had bought a Supreme Edition of the game, and since the secondary market for those copies are ridiculously high, it was hard to justify hanging on to the game. I might pick up a non-Supreme edition later, but unlike The Queen's Gambit, the game didn't outweigh the value of the game enough to convince me to keep it.

Expedition

Plays: 1

Winner: The "I Know It's a Classic, But..." Award

123456

At the convention I attended this month, someone ran a gaming tour of classic games (Acquire, El Grande, and Puerto Rico) so that folks who were relatively new to the hobby could see where the current games came from. It was a neat idea, and when the opportunity came up to play Expedition, I figured I should give it a try for the same reasons. Plus, I remembered from my early days in the hobby that this game was one that I had on my shortlist of games to play.

The problem with this game is that I'm not a fan of race games, and I'm not a fan of games with a lot of chaos. We played this with a full complement of six players, and it was frustrating to see my route get close enough to my destination halfway around the table, and then watch it veer off into Neverland before the round got back to me. I had a pretty good system going near the start, but once the routes were well developed, I realized that one of my cities (the only one in the Western hemisphere) was never going to get connected.

I can see why folks like it, and I can see why it has a place in the history of boardgaming, but I can't say it's a game that I'll want to play very often. There's just not enough there to get me excited to play it.

Snowdonia

Plays: 2

Winner: The "Wowzers!" Award

123456

I'm in a gaming lull. Not a lot of new games excite me, and I'm less willing to learn a new game when I have games that I already play too infrequently. I've had Snowdonia since I received it through the Kickstarter campaign, and when I saw that someone was setting it up at a convention, I asked to join in. I figured I had it, and I should at least play it before deciding what to do with it.

I'm pleased to say that I found a new game that really excites me. It's strange, really, since worker placement isn't my most favorite mechanism, but there's something about the way the entire game comes together that's extremely engaging to me. There's a lot to do each turn, and working out your plans to make sure everything comes together the way you want it to is a fun challenge. It also has a lot of replayability, not just through the scenarios, but in how the weather affects the progression of the game. I played two games this month, and one flew by as we continued having good weather, and another took a bit longer as the weather kept restricting our development.

I'm very pleased with the game, and I'm interested now in trying some of Tony's other games (like Paperclip Railways and Ivor the Engine). They may not be the mack daddy that Snowdonia is, but I'm curious to see what else the man can design.

Subdivision

Plays: 1

Winner: The "Haters Gonna Hate" Award

123456

I won't lie: I've seen some negative things written about this game, and my expectations were a little low because of that. I went into it thinking that I was going to be disappointed, but I'm pleased to say that this game is a fun exercise with its own set of challenges. Sure, it's a fairly solitaire game, and the drafting gets a little repetitive with just five types of tiles to choose from, but I thought balancing all of the different aspects of the game to build your city was just right.

I think what hurts this game the most is its similar look to Suburbia, which is such a different game that people may be expecting this game to play a lot like that game. It doesn't, which might be why folks haven't taken to it. For what it is, though, it plays well, it plays quickly, and it has a lot of choices to make from start to finish. I enjoyed the hell out of this game.

Comments: Snowdonia is an excellent worker placement game, which plays good solo because of the way the AI was introduced into the game. Pulling cubes from a bag you know that your time is limited before more white cubes come out and the AI does another action; so part of the solo game is trying to get the cubes back into the draw bag to increase your odds that the AI cubes are not pulled. That of course is easier said than done as you're trying to move rubble, lay track, build stations, get contracts, and score as high as possible. At some points in the game it's actually advantageous to have the AI go - so there's a nice balancing of trying to time the AI actions.

Why isn't this rated higher? Well for me I enjoy the game, and the variability of the trains and scenarios make the game feel fresh, but there are some elements I don't care for as much. The setup is quite long for a solo game, and in fact my plays have happened the following day after I've setup the game the prior evening - it's not an Arhkam Horror setup, but still quite long for a game that seems to be over quickly (although that's because the game is very smooth). Also, the VP spread can be interesting to beat your high score, but since all the setup is different every time you play, there's little you can do to compare the score. Was my 170 better than my 160 in the last game - well by score yet, but by the way the track was laid out, the train I used, the weather conditions - the 160 could have been a much better score. So there's little I can do from game to game in order to determine if I'm getting better with the game, and for me that's a little frustrating.

Overall, if you like worker placement games and train themes, you probably have already picked this up, and if not you should consider it. Despite my issues with the scoring in the game, it's a rock solid design with plenty of replayability and expansions that are available. Recommended. thumbsup

I was hurting a little on Saturday morning because of lack of sleep, but went down at 8 am to play Snowdonia. A fellow player named Linda and I were taught by Phil. As with Dustin, what struck me about Phil was how excited he was to teach and play the game (something I experience again with another game that night). I enjoyed Snowdonia, but it wasn't my favorite game - I do think the more plays of it, the more fun it would become.

We also played Quarriors! Quartifacts. It was our first time playing with that expansion.

Last March was pretty good for new games! Snowdonia and Palaces are both holding up well and I don't anticipate getting rid of them anytime in the foreseeable future.

Snowdonia (6 plays last March, 10 plays since): This was my choice last March and it is still my choice today (just by a nose though). There's a lot to like here; scarcity of actions, competition over those actions (and the order matters greatly) and it's not just a "get more workers to win" game. Players can get a 3rd worker, but that worker requires upkeep. The way the cards serve double duty as scoring opportunities and action cards is neat as well. The various scenarios change the game up in pleasant ways.

Snowdonia is just a really solid eurogame and we're pleased with it.

Palaces of Carrara (10 plays last March, 10 plays since): Another very solid euro, this one is all about tempo and timing, and it feels unique despite sounding very bland and by-the-numbers on paper. Each game sees 4 cards dealt out at the beginning; these cards determine

1) How VP are scored this game
2) How the game will end

The game length is in the hands of the players, so this isn't a multiplayer solitaire game where you can ignore your opponent's board. I've had games where I was building a grand VP engine only to have my wife end the game before I was ready. Likewise, I've had games where I see her building something and I rush the game to its conclusion before she is ready. Carrara is also something of a rarity among euros in this day and age because games can end in blowouts.

Carrara is absolutely a keeper, it's a shame that it didn't get better US distribution.

Legacy: The Testimony of Duke de Crecy (3 plays last March, 12 plays since): We got some good plays of this one, but burned out on it a bit. This game is in desperate need of an expansion (it needs more patron cards). This is one that might be reacquired one day when more cards are available.

Takenoko (3 plays last March, 3 plays since): This is good as a light family game that I can still enjoy. I expect this to get played more as the kids get older. I have finished last each andvery time I've played this game.

I haven't played Bruxelles 1893, One Night Ultimate Werewolf, or Monarch again since last March. I'd play any of them again, but probably won't seek them out.

A first outing for this in March. Curious game. Nifty worker placement mechanics with a good 'hurry-up' mechanism in the game events that stop you thinking too far ahead and hoarding resources for too long, but the theme is, well, up to yourself, I guess. Nice game, though.

I will be teaching this, along with the Jungfraubahn expansion, during Slot.4 (Saturday 3/14 8am). This expansion uses dynamite!
