Having just come back from holiday (my excuse for the lateness of the list) I got the kids to come up with words or short phrases to describe where we'd been (London, in our case). So I thought it would be interesting to find out how we would summarise where we live in three words/phrases.

Day 22

Our return flight was thankfully at a very friendly time of 10a.m. It was a packed flight, which made us wonder why there was only one flight per day to and fro Singapore and Chubu . In any case, both of us were well-rested and took out Red7 for a last game for this holiday.

It turned out to be a neck and neck game. Going into the final round, the score was 34-35 in her favour. I managed to squeak out the required 6 points in the final round for the narrow 40-35 victory.

Totoro watches our final game of Red7, which I won 40-35 narrowly (my palette at game end)

My Significant Other's palette at game end

In all, we played five games of Red7 during this trip, of which I took four victories cool.

The following are our purchases from the trip:

Totoro checking out our stash from the Chubu trip

As mentioned above, after completing the hike from Magome to Tsumago on Day 14, we bought a certificate for completing the trail as a souvenir:

Totoro showing off the certificate it received as a gift from us, certifying it has completed the Magome-Tsumago hike

Totoro's rating of the duo's shopping: (The fake ayu+charcoal and Tokoname tea pot are great finds but the Magome-Tsumago certificate is the icing on the cake ninja)

New to Me

I'm going to catch a lot of heat for this, I'm sure, because I know it is a beloved classic. I was genuinely surprised, because I love sci-fi movies, and even though I knew the twist ending I thought it would be very interesting. Instead, the entire experience of watching Planet of the Apes was frustrating. First of all the opening half hour is painfully slow, loaded with excessive exposition and tons of walking. I knew things would pick up because they hadn't run into an ape, so I hung in and waited. Once Heston is taken captive and we see the role reversal of man being experimented on while apes are in charge it felt like a decent episode of the Twilight Zone or something, and I was getting more interested. Then Charlton Heston begins to communicate with his captors and the movie really started to infuriate me. With zero subtlety, the film launches into a lesson on how religious people are either stupid drones who believe all the lies they are told, or evil zealots who create those lies and punish anyone who questions them. Those who believe in evolution and question the Bible are the kind, sweet, and gentle people. The entire second half of the film just keeps pounding this point into your brain, and it loses anything that might have been special because it's being so blatant about the agenda. It certainly doesn't help that I am a Christian and the movie was essentially making me and anyone like me into the bad guy. When the end came and that famous scene (which I have watched hundreds of times despite never seeing the film), I no longer cared about the character. I was checked out because the movie lost me in it's political and anti-religious agenda. I'm glad others can enjoy the movie and don't mind these issues I had with it, but I'll be happy to never watch Planet of the Apes again.

Big Update.

Day 1. I was apparently in surgery for 8.5 hours. Most of it inclined with my head down and resting on my shoulders. Pretty steep angle, too. Apparently, my surgeon thought she had enough tissue to do the resection. Pathology came back, found some cancer cells. She took another sample closer to the margin, came back with one cell. Still one too many. She decided to go ahead and do the APR and the permanent colostomy.

We knew it was how it would probably happen. She had warned us since day one. We were prepared.

When I came to, all I knew was my back was in agony. The entire small of my back was just clenched up. Could not get comfortable, even with decent painkillers. Horrible night, but finally managed to find some sleep in between nurse checks.

Day 2. Back was still an issue. Abdomen was sore, of course. And who do you think the 2nd person i saw that morning was? The PT nurse! I get to try and get myself out of bed and walk. Just around the room and then breakfast came. He got me seated into a support chair (which was up too high and had no support). My wife was downstairs getting breakfast. I blankly stared at the wall and tried to cram down vegetable broth. About 20 minutes later, my ostomy nurse comes in and wants to talk about my colostomy care. I plainly told her that I would not be a good patient today and if we could aim for the next morning. 20 minutes after that, the occupational therapy nurse comes in. I get to try and take off my sock with a grabby hook and put it back on. And I get to walk some more. Back to the bed it was.

He was trying to teach me to "log roll", where the bed is flat and you basically tip over into bed and roll. I'm 6'0". This led to be almost impossible as I would start to pull in my incision area and got Mr Stabby and his pain ministers visiting. After several attempts, I said hell with it, I grabbed my stomach and flopped myself into bed. The nurse quickly lobbed my legs up, but I was in place. Nothing ripped or damaged.

The gas on day 2 was horrible. As you probably know, when they do these kind of surgeries, they pump gas into the area to open it up and be able to access the different sections. This gas eventually get absorbed in and released as a burp or fart. In my case, as my back made getting out of bed incredibly painful, it was trapped and moving around abdomen until I was nudged ever so slightly by my loving wife to sit up and stand more. She was pretty upset with my as I ate my lunch of potato soup and was focused on one point in the room while I was trying to concentrate my muscles to keep the pressure off my back. My wound on my butt where it was closed off also became an issue the longer I sat there.

Spent the rest of the day in bed. That night, I got a stern talking to about how I needed to work through the pain and sit and walk. it was the only way I was going to get to go home when I was scheduled. She was right, of course.

Day 3. Woke up and vowed to walk to the moon. Breakfast came and struggled through more cream of wheat. Then we walked around the station. It's not a small station mind you. I was doing pretty good and decided to do two laps. Overachiever and all. When I got back, went straight to the bed. As I sat down, i felt myself going flush in the face and knew what it meant. Pass out time was coming unless I got on the bed fast. I got up, no problems. Face regained color. Then took a 2 hour nap until lunch.

Only did one lap at lunch.

Did two with dinner, though.

What we hadn't had was output from the stoma. I had plenty of gas, but no solids. Later in the evening, we had poop in the bag. A huge storm had come through right before. And as I sat there pooping in my bag, there was my wife and three nurses looking out my window because a huge, gorgeous double rainbow showed up. Storm, poop, rainbows. This meant something.

Day 4. By this time, most of the gas had been worked out, though some is still rolling in there along with gasses from digestion as my bowel was complaining about there being food in it again. I mean, I worked for a full day to deprive it of anything and then nearly nothing for the next two days. Why was I torturing it? But by the end of breakfast, my bowel was working again.

Doctor came in and said they would pull the catheter out and my drain and it was really up to me if I wanted to stay until Friday or not. I opted for home today.

So, in the next few hours, we got everything sorted out. They gave us extra supplies until I could organize my own deliveries and arranged for home health care to come out and visit while I'm getting through recovery.

And so, made it home safe and trying to set up the house to I know where I'm sleeping. I did pretty well with the stairs, so I may just try sleeping in my own bed with a lot of pillows behind me. We'll see how I feel later.

A friend of mine dropped off a wheelchair for me before he left for Origins. I think I can make the trip after a couple more day's rest and at least go out and see people. Only going to be for about an hour or so, though, and I'm more than OK with that. I didn't realize I would miss the convention season so much or the people I always got to hang out with that week until I started seeing all the posts from the show while I was laying in bed. Really going to miss Gen Con, too, because I won't be able to go to that due to chemo.

So, that's where we are. I have some serious bladder training to do now, but I'm hoping it'll return to normal in a week or less.

More later, everyone!

When you can reasonably describe your home as a "live-in game collection".

It started when I moved into my first apartment last year. My living room and dining room are dominated by large bookcases full of games, and I have a closet full of games as well as a bookshelf in my bedroom. I'm surrounded on all sides by board games.

What does home mean to you? Do you have a particular place that is always home, maybe somewhere you grew up or where you have lived for an extended time? Or maybe like John Denver, you fell in love with a place and that's home for you.

When you say "home", where is that?

I never ran into George at the big local game store, which means he must have virtually never gone, since I spent as much time there as George and Cliff spent at Cheers combined. I mostly met George at either the home of a couple of gamers in town, or at his own home. At the latter, I typically played with just him and Terttu, although occasionally there would be other guests.

They had a lovely, century-or-so-old home in a residential neighborhood near campus. Two stories, a big porch. The game room was upstairs; he had a much smaller collection than I had (just a few hundred...) but it was well-curated, as we say in the rare book room at the library. He was a pretty die-hard Eurogamer; no abstracts, wargames, or games with plastic spiders in sight. Not many old games; he was of the opinion that games were getting better all the time and was always looking to play the next best thing. (Syntax ambiguity courtesy of Warren Zevon. No link; look up that great song yourself.)

Along with the games and Terttu--his four daughters had all moved out to college and beyond--he also had a wee little fuzzy geriatric dog, a hand-me-up from one of his daughters when she moved to a pet-unfriendly apartment. He had a very big heart but the intelligence of a cucumber. And not one of those newfangled sentient cucumbers they have in the fancy stores.

This was a genteel gaming establishment. Cheese and sausage, craft beer and sparkling water--away from the table. I'm very proud.

We played in the cozy--in terms of size and ambience--living room, featuring old-fashioned upholstered chairs, a zillion pictures of the family throughout its development, paintings, and evidences of his strong but understated Christian faith. Play would be interrupted now and again with one or another of his daughters calling home. Terttu did most of the talking in this environment; my guess is that George would when the games were off the table. That sort of gamer.

Talk was lively in between moves, and waiting for somebody or other to come back from an errand in the house (such as talking to one of the Hummasti ladies). I'd never start the conversation, but it would often come around to talking about me--what I wanted out of my future, what I wanted to do in a PhD program, and on and on. I was very confident then, and it was gratifying that he was equally enthusiastic. I'm vastly grateful for all the confidence that my Missouri State professors had.

And then there was talking about games coming out. Like you do.

And that was the end of BorderCon. I couldn't face a late night and long drive home the next day. So Cthulhu Wars was it for the weekend. The convention kept going until midday Monday, but left early without even playing a filler.

Great convention, super well organised and the new hotel is luxurious. My eyes! I could see the games without squinting! Well done to Neil and the crew.

Funny about the larger numbers though - often more difficult to organise a game. There was two rooms, both large, so it did take some running around to get longer, complex games played. I played about half the games I'd planned. I'd have preferred to drop some euros for FFG titles, but the majority of gamers were definitely euro fans.

Anway, really looking forward to next year. And this time, I'm REALLY going to make sure I play Cuba Libre!

And so it happened. Mid january, nearly seven months after first checking in, I went home. A good friend drove me back. It's been a major adjustment - I've had to quickly learn to be much more independent. I'm still a long way off from my pre-illness strength, probably 1-2 years out from it if the doctors are right. I still have one drain and the ostomy in - they remain until a few other internal issues have fully healed.

It's been terrific to be around my family again. Believe it or not, seven months in the hospital will have an effect on your marriage. Our oldest two kids quickly latched back onto me when I got home, but I can definitely see there have been some emotional impacts on them.

One of the hardest moments during my stay was when my (at the time) 1.5 year old son came into my room and didn't recognize me. That hurt more than I can describe. But now at home I've been able to spend quite a bit of time with him and we are definitely reconnecting.

All in all this has been an insane ordeal, for my family as well as myself. I thank God that I survived at all - it truly was a miracle. My surgeon is THE GUY for pancreas issues in our area, and he said I was the worst case he's ever seen. I've gained so much respect for my wife who became a single mother who had to care and advocate for an invalid for such a long time. She has more strength than I think she even realized.

Most of all this has made me much more aware of how little time we have together. You really never know when everything could be taken away. I hope to spend the next years spending much more time with those I love. I encourage you to do the same.

Electric! Heresy, etc...

His best album? Top 5 for me... The electric side is a rocking, garage style thrash and the acoustic side features some of the most remarkable poetry (yes, I am using that word!) heard in 'pop'.

Well, that's all. On the last day of the con I played Splendor and another game of Roll For The Galaxy, but then there was the long trek home to my state, with my bags full of games - Imperial Settlers, Splendor, Istanbul, Hanabi deluxe, and a cheap copy of the Mayfair version of Silverton. Overall, a great week.

The year before this week had been characterised by a series of great battles between Peter and I in games that we both understood well. This year the games of that complexity - ZhanGuo and Yunnan - were not games that I was really interested in playing. Maybe next year there'll be something new from Mac Gerdts for us to fight over.
