I really love the simple drift mechanics, mutation concepts, and game ecology presented in this game. That the waste products of one species can be food for another is very clever, and the way that players can make areas of the board into an uninhabitable wasteland if they aren't careful adds great flavor to play.
However, as much as I love the constituent sub-systems of the game, I find Primordial Soup a crashing bore.

This isn't as bad as some of the games listed here... but no matter how you sort out those poop cubes you still have to make sure there is one of each color on every space of the board to start. I guess it gives everyone else something to do while I sort out all the mutation cards but its still pretty fiddly.

Plays:
Risk Legacy x2 Aton* Finito!* Primordial Soup* Finca* Last Will*
*new to me
A week to aggressively start going through my "Want to Play" list, so Aton, Finca and Primordial Soup. To be fair, I had a copy of Aton that I got for free at BGG.CON so I knew I'd eventually play it.
I think I liked everything I played this week, which is rare considering how many new games I played. Finito! is a little filler that doesn't have much to it, but of the longer games I played, the only one that I wouldn't happily play again soon is Finca. There's nothing wrong with Finca, but there are better games in the super-light Euro category.
Primordial Soup has a lot of great ideas that I don't think have really been replicated in later games. Unfortunately, it feels dated and there's no real catch-up mechanism that I could see. The game we played was fun but not particularly tense or strategic.
Last Will is charming!

More games about evolution. I love the idea of evolving my creatures and seeing them spread, fight, move around the board, and out-evolve their competitors. But, there's not really a great evolution game yet. A couple of decent ones exist, but not a great one. Dominant Species sort of claims to be an evolution game, but the creatures don't actually EVOLVE so it's sort of missing the most important criteria IMHO

I enjoy Primordial Soup. I don't think of it as an epic game. We found out it becomes one when you add in the expansion and try to play with 5 new players in a six player game. Four odd hours later it appeared to be a close, tense game with everyone scrapping for points. People seemed to have generally enjoyed it... and we all congratulated them for having the fortitude to see through a game that would have been better if it could have been played in half the time...

I'm not sure that this fits the list, if not then I can remove it...
Turn order is based on the current scores, and goes in both directions. For the eat&poop phase, play goes from the lowest score to the highest. And then, for the gene selection phase, play goes from the highest score to the lowest.
Players have some influence over this, by trying to pass or be passed, but sometimes it's out of your control. Overall, the player order is another strategic element in the game.

I was wandering aimlessly around Origins 2011, and found a guy putting this out to play in the Board Room.
Quoting my comment on the game:
Quote: I looked at the shabby components (are those toothpicks stuck into tinkertoys?) and didn't expect much, but this turned out to be a real highlight of Origins 2011 for me! The rules fit the theme well.
Indeed, looking back I would say this is the game I enjoyed the most at last year's Origins (but don't read too much into that, I had a screwy schedule and perpetual bad timing, so I missed out on a lot of stuff), and I would love a chance to play again.
Alas, I haven't seen it since, but if I do I'm going to grab it!
