My wife and I were home alone on New Years Eve and decided to celebrate it quietly just the two of us. I convinced her that it would be a great opportunity to play Insecta in the Hive version. We crammed in a 2½ hour session after dinner and before the celebrations and fireworks. I was the hive master, she in control of the mutants. She managed to clear the first level before midnight.
This morning after sleeping in and breakfast we continued onwards. She killed of the Ant Lion larva in the foyer and then proceeded to clear the Root Cellar of its 5 inhabitants before both of us thought enough was enough. Seeing through all 5 levels is an accomplishment - my hat off to those who do. We might pick it up at a later stage though, as we both had immense fun out of it.
Now, where do we go from here...

Games Played Week 52:
1x 1825 Unit 3 1x Age of Exploration 1x Agricola w/ Farmers of the Moor 1x Aquaretto 1x Glen More 1x Haggis 1x Insecta 1x Isla Tetra 2 1x Navegador 1x Race for the Galaxy 1x Ticket to Ride: Europe 1x Troyes
Game of Choice: This is a tough one - do I go with an epic game of Age of Exploration, where I just missed exploring the North West Passage, saw Columbus eaten by cannibals and was on the way to circumnavigating the globe - but ultimately lost to V. who explored South America, Central America and the Carribbean, found, gold, spice, pearls and ruins, not to mention the Aztecs?
Or do we go with spending New Years Eve playing Insecta in a hive game, with me the relentless hive master out for blood and V. the mutant designer trying to escape and clearing the level before moving on in style?
I think it has to be the latter, if only because it was the first real 2 player game. We continued the game today, but called it off 1½ hours later, when V. had cleared the Root Cellar. It was EPIC and I think we might pick it up again at another point in time. We took a few shots of it, so we can re-create the situation - plus V. wanted to show her biology teacher the game.
It was a close call though...
The Week in Review: I covered the early part of the week in the previous list, so I will go briefly over those games. It has been a great week with 12 plays of 12 distinct games and in very diverse genres.
Agricola was a nightmare, but it is a game I really want to like, not to say love. V. does rate it highly and therefore I persevere.
Ticket to Ride: Europe showed promise as a family game and Haggis could well find its own little niche.
Aquaretto was fun and will be for the whole family. We might have to look into getting Zooloretto now...
Navegador was sweet and something I would like to play more often to really explore the different paths to victory. Race for the Galaxy was its usual self.
1825 Unit 3 was awesome. I don't think either of us would stand a chance in a competitive environment. We enjoy it a great deal, but a lot of the enjoyment stems from the route building aspect of the game.
Isla Tetra 2 was novel in that I pursued a new strategy, namely fishing, whereas V. focused on exploring. She was a bit unfortunate, I was focused, it continues to entertain us. We are both looking forward to seeing the production copy.
Troyes and Glen More were the appetizer on New Years Eve and tasted wonderful. Insecta was the main course, but with enough leftovers for Sunday morning. The afternoon has been spent exploring in the Age of Exploration.
Great week.
The Week Ahead: V. and I have the next 2 days off also. The kids come home on Tuesday, so we will have some quality gaming tomorrow and then perhaps a game or two with the kids, before it is back to school/ work on Wednesday.

See all those lovely bits & pieces of insects & assorted other invertebrates? With the ovals and the rounded corners? You have to cut them out of card. With scissors.
How long did it take me? As long as it takes to buy a second-hand pre-cut copy
Of course, I have all the expansions too... all uncut...

1/29/10 Almost forgot to add this one to the list. It was a cheap $5 purchase at a FLGS. Not the most appealing of themes but certainly unique and interesting in the way you create a mutant bug and they have to battle their way out of the hive against other insects.

Perched on top of a shelf at VV, in original ziploc for $.50...how could I pass this up?
Included the Rainforest expansion...haven't inventoried but there are a lot of bits, including a bunch of laminated cards - were the originals laminated?
I also picked up a baggie of "1cm/1g" plastic cubes for $0.75...in case I need to teach my kids the metric system, or in case I need a crapload of blue cubes for something.

There are a lot of sheets of card with a lot of insect parts in various shapes & sizes that take a lot of cutting before you start play.
I bought a pre-cut version - one time where 'mint condition' isn't such an advantage

I still think this one looks fascinating but I've come to the realization that Eklund games just aren't my cup of tea. They're fascinating but tend to be hard to get on the table.

Broadsides from other Orders by Sue Hubbell
The book is a collection of essays about different insects (and one about daddy long legs). I've owned this book forever, having picked up for free, most likely from a sidewalk in Berkeley...that was one of the fun things about living in that city. More often than you'd think, someone would empty their library (presumably of books that couldn't be resold to the many used book stores).
The cover is very plain as is the illustrations which is maybe one reason it took a few tries over the years (mind you I've lived in Houston for the past 8 years!) but this past month it took hold. The writing is fine, nothing special, and I don't intend to keep it...I have too many books...but it was certainly an interesting read.
And insects ARE WEIRD. They are just so completely foreign, and once you get over the "creepiness factor" of their alien-ness, they become really interesting subjects to write about. And they have a fine sympathetic author who wrote a fine little book.
