Yes, i hear what you are saying. You want a feel good fun happy game after a tough day (unfortunately I can see one such day coming over the horizon for me).

OR, OR... You could make your characters life as miserable as possible, have them "mauled by tigers" and revel in the thought that your life could be worse.

Codenames
This was played on apps/tv and was a pretty cool implementation. The words were taken from the list on the forums instead of the actual game, though, and the poor available word associate showed as a result.

1830: Railways & Robber Barons
I'm cheating a bit as the game technically finished this morning, but I have now played 5 games of 1830, 4 via Rails, and gone bankrupt I think 3 times (I wouldn't be surprised if it were 4, though).

It's funny, my skill has gotten such that I consider myself decent or even good at other 18xx titles, whether it's cutthroat 1817, gentle 18OE, or closely related 1889, but I am just awful at 1830. I did really poorly this game, and found myself without any 4 train, and didn't win the race to purchase a 5 train. Even a 6 train was purchased before my turn, so I was forced to buy the second 6 train followed by purchasing a diesel. I have oh so much to learn.

Food Chain Magnate
After half a month or so off of online plays, I got to play the next game in the championships, and I feel awful because the main reason I lost was because I was stupid. It's one of those things where you look at the board and realize "Oh, I need to do move 'x'. I do that, and I win. I do anything else, and I lose." Then I promptly, after making that decision, choose move 'y'. I did that multiple times, but there were two key points where that crippled me. I really should've had the game because I had the first to advertise drinks and a drinks radio ad going on, plus I was in the middle of the board, so I could've tanked prices and monopolized the market, but I just screwed up my turns time and time again. I'm still kicking myself.

Gloom
Went to a friend's birthday over the weekend where I ended up playing Gloom and Munchkin. I had a partial play once a long time ago, but it wasn't explained well (or even fully) and so this time it was more fun. We chose to keep the rules simple and ignore card effects and leave out the action cards. I don't know what the action cards do in the game, but playing with the card effects will definitely improve gameplay/balance, but it was still fun to conceive stories about how miserable our families are and cheer up other families.

Munchkin w/Skullkickers & The Guild
The game had a really slow start as everybody is at level 1 with no bonuses and therefore can't kill anything. Once the game started to pick up, it really started to pick up, though. We still called it early with one player being level 7, myself being level 6 but would've been 8 at the end of my turn.

I haven't touched this game in years, so it was interesting to take a look at the game from a balance and quality viewpoint. The absurdity level of the game shows how it starts out really slow because players are too weak to kill anything, but when players can finally do anything, the huge swings in bonuses to either side can make the outcomes very unpredictable, or almost guaranteed if you have the right cards.

The elf and wizard cards (which I happened to draw, luckily) definitely feel incredibly powerful, too powerful, which is something I recall when I had first played the game so many years ago.

The Skullkickers and Guild booster packs overall were good additions to the game, although it was annoying that the coloring of the cards were different (just a quality/different priniting standpoint, not intentionally different), not because of being able to recognize that the card is from a different set, but because it was more difficult to easily separate treasure and dungeon cards correctly. At one point I did become cursed with being guild leader, which gave me a treasure anytime another player won a battle, but I lost a level any time they lost. I was cursed by that card by my opponent who promptly faced a battle that would kill him just to punish me and make me lose my second level.

Reef Encounter
I finally got to play Reef Encounter. And the rules make so much more sense now that I know what they're trying to teach! It's a hard one to wrap your head around as there are so many subtle things going on in the game and relationships between the actions, pieces, and players. I triggered the end of the game, and managed to beat my wife by one point, and we both beat the third player, who taught the game, by a decent margin. If I hadn't ended the game, my wife would've won by a pretty good margin instead. I think we were in the mid or high 20's for our score. This one has gone on the wish list and I would be happy to play it again.

Terra
I am awful and stupid at Triva, and that's the type of game Terra is. There are 4 categories
-Region (board has a map of the world)
-Year
-Size (in meters or miles)
-Numbers (for various uses, such as population size or weight)
You'll get some topic that has a value spanning 3 of the above 4 categories, and you take turns placing cubes on your guesses. No two players can share a space. You get 7 points for being right, or 3 for being adjacent to the right answer. You have 5 cubes, you get back any right guesses, lose any wrong guesses, and then get back one additional cube (minimum 3) at the end of each turn.

Since I am so awful at these games, I just opted to always use all of my cubes. I rarely have a good reason to use more than 3 and expect a good return on them, and since I always get 3 back, I might as well use them. We stopped when our last player arrived, at which point I had just been passed up by one point by the last player. So I got last.

It's actually a decent game and I would definitely play it again, but I am so dumb at these games.

Timeline Challenge
This was a somewhat frustrating, but actually fun alternative way to play Timeline. I do like that everybody is simultaneously involved and has equal opportunities (as opposed to I have to guess when the toothbrush was invented and you have to guess where in the timeline the Big Bang happened). It also felt shorter to me, but it was probably about the same length of time. The board takes up an awful lot of space, though, but still, it was a good alternative way to play Timeline.

EDIT: I forgot to share my play of Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition) this past week.

So we last left off at the mining camp. We saved the last few miners from slavery and death, while all the guards were killed. We decided to escort the miners back to town and deal with the captain of the guard, but realize that we may have to deal with an ambush or riot or something big as the guards may already know what's going on. Even so, oh how poorly prepared we were. Now, I'll elaborate later, but a lot of our actions became dictated by one player which the rest of us strongly disagreed with (the pirate half-elf ranger), which ended up with lots of poor choices. On the other hand, there may not have been any good choices.

Halfway back, we set up camp. We left the miners behind and approached the city, planning on sneaking at least the thief (myself) in to give the mayor a head's up and make sure the coast was clear for the miners. The place was filled with guards, many more than ever before. We also saw a small patch heading towards the forest. We opted to go towards the forest to face a smaller group than to face the entire city's worth of guards. It was about dusk, so there was some sunlight, and we're walking across open terrain towards a few outposts at the edges of the forest. Ooh, let's be sneaky, our Ranger suggests, let's enter the forest 50 feet west of the guards, they'll never see us crossing this open field they're watching, and we'll surround them in the forest and kill them. Now, one thing to keep in mind here is that the guards at the mines were killing miners and tried to kill us without any provocation. We fought in self-defense and to free the remaining miners. We have reason to believe the captain of the city guard is corrupt, but we have no definitive reason to believe the entire city guard is corrupt.

Without surprise, they saw us, and called for us to get out of the forest and drop our weapons. They were also calling us brigands. Huh. They could certainly be evil and trying to catch us off-guard disarmed, but this might be a misunderstanding because they think we're brigands. An argument ensues between us over how to approach the situation. The Ranger wants to surprise and kill them all (cause who won't be surprised when they see you coming straight at them), I want to parlay and talk our way out of it (plus, my character is all about deception and trickery). Nobody else wanted to fight. Besides, we're so outnumbered, a fight would be foolish.

Finally, the argument going nowhere, I simply act. I walk out, hands raised, saying we mean no harm and do not wish to fight. We are not brigands. They respond with bows raised (expected) demanding I drop my weapons, and that they know what we did at the mining camp. Hmm.. to an outsider, yeah, we just killed a bunch of guards and ran. That looks bad. So I try to start explaining how we freed the miners and are escorting them back to town, we saw a commotion over near the forest and came to investigate. We don't get much further because the Ranger shoots at them with a bow, rolling a natural 20 but at range 60 or more feet, so barely scratching them, and they all promptly fire and nearly drop me right there.

The Ranger's next action is to run into the forest and climb a tree because "I want to jump down on them from above when they get under me", cause yeah, they're over 60 feet away and you're going to stand around until they're under you and don't see you (like they didn't see you approaching them in open light from an open field). We get into a fight with a ton of guards and some lieutenants. He eventually jumps down after running across a bunch of trees, falling prone, and stays down. We are saved by an owlbear rampaging through the forest killing anything making an annoying racket. We all run. After finishing the last guard we were immediately fighting, the owlbear turns and charges towards us, but another guard who had just arrived shoots at it, not realizing what he's done until he's already done it, and takes the owlbear's attention. Off in the distance, the captain of the guard and his ensemble were approaching, and in addition, guards have been descending upon us in numbers both from within the forest and outside, so we were horribly outnumbered, about to face a stronger foe, and lots of bad stuff. We hastily retreat towards the miners to warn them. We find guards already escorting them to the city, which is dangerous for us, but at least the miners are safe, so we leave it be and continue our retreat until we get away and make it to the next town. LakesEdge or something.

Lakesedge is an elven town despised by Silvervale cause they're elves. We get there without incident, we're welcomed, and got a lot of information from them. There's a wizards tower not far from there that we'd planned on visiting later in the campaign, but it looks like we're going to be heading there now. We got a book about tips and riddles to enter the wizard's tower, and that's about the end of our session.

I'm level 3 now, an assassin thief is the approach I'm taking because the ability to deceive and conceal my identity matches my character, the massive amounts of sneak attack damage is just gravy. Unfortunately, I'm missing next session because I'm going camping. Oh well.
