The funny thing is that this would *totally* work within the theme and mechanics of the game.

You mean the latest masterpiece of fantasy storytelling from Lucasfilm's Brian Moriarty? Why it's an extraordinary adventure with an interface of magic...stunning, high-resolution, 3D landscapes...sophisticated score and musical effects. Not to mention the detailed animation and special effects, elegant point 'n' click control of characters, objects, and magic spells.

Beat the rush! Go out and buy Loom today!

I have this one too, never played, 'cause I love the Edward Gorey-esque artwork. I like the idea of the clear cards played on top of each other as well, just never ever played it.

Because you are also drawn by precisely the same things that attract me to it. Since I have played it I'll share my thoughts on it:
Quote:
The concept is superb. The Gorey-esque art is fun. It's just a shame that these weren't met by an equally good game. I think a more strategic, and less neighbor-stabbing game using the transparency would be excellent. You just try to depress your living, and then kill them — or possibly kill your opponents' living before they can get depressed — first, hoping that other players don't undo your progress, or even cheer up your dead. Yes, you read that correctly.
I gave it a  5 . Even at that, it consistently grabs my eye, triggering the "Ooh! Gorey!" part of the brain.

I think that part of making this game a success is the willingness or capability of the players to be creative in the story-telling that goes with the game play. I've played this at times where it was a lot of fun mostly because of the increasingly bizarre and morbid stories we came up for our family, other times it just felt like something to pass the time with. I rated it a 6 (I think).

Hilariously morbid and twisted. The best part is definitely the optional storytelling aspect. Looking forward to getting the expansion packs so I can play with more people and inflict more dire fates on the hapless characters in the game.

Yay! Last week I thrifted a Gloom expansion that contained all of the Family cards from the base game and all of the expansions.

I had a feeling the rest of it would turn up.

Turns out, it was buried under the baggies of toys in a bin!

$1, GW

Now I need to figure out if I truly have all of the expansions along with the base game. Anyone know if there are any identifying marks on the cards that denote expansion vs. base game?

Finally, what is the best integration of art design into a game that you have seen - not necessarily the best art, but the most clever use of art?

My vote goes to the necessarily translucent Gloom cards, with Gorey-esque art:

I'm impressed with the treasure chest rendering of the (1st edition) Jamaica box. While there are parts of it that aren't the most functional choice (the rules, for example, are printed on a huge poster that folds up to provide a picture of the chest contents - a pile of doubloons) the whole presentation is quite lovely.

I find Planet Steam as a package to be very appealing (well, modulo the ridiculous decision to make the board a bifold instead of quad-fold): the large cards; the chunky and thematic wooden and glass bits; the ornate-yet-functional board; all are very attractive. If only some of the flimsy paper VP certificates were more impressive, it'd be nearly perfect. I suspect that when the appropriate inspiration strikes (like it did Tom with his 51st State kit!) I'll come up with something appropriately cool.

Yes, Jamaica is a great candidate, as are most games from GameWorks.

I'll also nominate Taluva, if we can disregard George of the Jungle being on the cover. When playing the game I feel almost like we're creating art on the game table.

Alien Frontiers also succeeds in my mind because of how well the rules and the board are laid out. I love how the board so well illustrates what each area does, and how the bonuses connect to each action - top notch work!

I find El Grande's board to be both attractive and functional - it's very clean, it is easy to distinguish between the different regions and easy to see the scoring values.

I'll also call out Nuns on the Run for failure in the artwork - specifically the doors. The board is nice looking and very well done, but the doors are a pale brown that does not stand out among the colors of the rest of the board. Aesthetically it looks very good, but doors are really important (they block line of sight) and I've had a couple of games where it goes "Okay, you see me. I'm right there." "No, there's a door here - I don't see you." "Oh, uh, nevermind..."

The gameplay was compromised to make the board look a little nicer.

I'm convinced I have to get markers for the doors b/c I'm the only person capable in my group of knowing where they are. I look forward to our next play being a lot easier for people.

When faced with two choices, simply toss a coin. It works not because it settles the question, but because in that brief moment when the coin is in the air, you suddenly realize what you were hoping for.

I didn't really think this game was awesome...

BUT! The clear cards are fantastic, and the artwork absolutely makes the game worth playing at least once.

The idea of having clear cards that can stack onto each other is just brilliant. I'm honestly surprised I have not seen other games pick this idea up and run with it.

I actually like playing this one, but I was already somewhat familiar with the concept, and a fan of the artist whose work the art style of the cards is based upon, so, your mileage may vary!

That said, Sara, I completely agree with you that it's surprising other games haven't picked up the concept. I had a couple ideas for designs, myself, but not actually having access to transparent cardstock makes them hard to playtest! I mean, deck builders with this kind of mechanism could make for a completely new level to that kind of experience.

A friend in the industry tells me that this is a very expensive game to produce (at least by the standards of card games),so that may be the reason it hasn't been adopted by others. I can't speak to this with any real knowledge, however, as he's the only one I know who's commented on the production costs involved.

I think you don't see this more often because Gloom has a bit of a flaw. Since you can see through the cards it is not hard to figure out a feature or two of a card as it is put into an opponents hand. If you know the cards well enough it's easy to pick up a lot of info this way. My group was playing Cthulhu gloom for the first time and about half way through the game certain cards were common knowledge to the point that open discussions would arise about play. 'You shouldn't do that because he has X and Y so you should play that card on player Z instead' weren't uncommon. In a light game like Gloom that's not necessarily a bad thing. But I can see designers shying away from this possibility.

I've played this 6-7 times so far and everytime it's been a blast. It does require a bit of story telling on the part of the players but this definitely adds to the game when everyone plays along.

This was my last game of the night. I'd been wanting to try this out for a long time- I'd almost bought it a few times and just never did. My friend Deron Dorna ended up winning it through the UG auction here on BGG, so we gave it a go.

The artwork is FANTASTIC. And the clear cards are just genius- a really awesome part of the game, in fact.

The game itself is...well, to be honest, not much game. It can get pretty silly listening to the other players making up stories about the characters in their "families", but that's about the best part of the game. It was short, about 25 minutes, and good enough that I'd play again, but not good enough that I'd drop the $15 and actually buy the game, so I'm glad someone I know has it!

I ended up winning, which for me is a rarity, but I'll take it!

I found that my favorite part of this game was pretending to care deeply about my family - being distraught when bad things happened and gracious when my opponents made good things happen. But to be fair to the game, that was a lot of fun the one time I've played it.

I could not get in to caring what happened at all. Yawn!

Cute card design though, and it wouldn't be bad to have for when the Munchkin Crowd comes around!

You win by making your characters miserable and other players characters happy. Its never been so infuriating to have someone do something good to my character in a game.
