Nivelul de dependenta lingvistica: Fara dependenta de limba

This is MY GAME. I probably win this game 80% of the time in our gaming group.

My trick - Lead with a low number, letting the river carry you where you ultimately want to end up (in my case, usually the first or second gem deposit), then use your big numbers to grab the gems and get out. That way, you are not at risk of being stolen from, and you get off to a solid start. You will most likely have two gems of one color, so you begin the game halfway to a single-color victory, and you have one insurance gem in case everyone else gangs up on you and pushes you over or steals from you.

People in Southern Ontario (immediately next to Niagara) tend to say that word as:

"ny-AH-gra"

It's definitely not a four-syllable word when spoken aloud, at least by people I know in the area.

I actually haven't listened to how our American cousins on the other side of the border tend to pronounce it.

Unfortunately, despite best intentions, most of our adopted "Native North American" names like Niagara, Ontario, Toronto, etc. end up sounding quite a bit different from their original Native pronunciations.

Oh well... only so much you can do.

Amusingly, there's a street here in Toronto called "Spadina" which comes from the native word ishpadinaa "a high hill or sudden rise in the land." Old time Torontonians pronounce it "Spa-DIE-nah", but apparently the more correct way of saying it is "Spa-DEE-na". So you get the unusual situation of people correcting the pronunciation to something which is actually "incorrect".

Same wherever I've lived in the USA. I also just checked my desk dictionary, and it looks like the second "a" is an optional schwa sound.

And the first "a" is not pronounced (by Americans) as "ah," but almost as a diphthong--an "ai" sound, as in "bag" or "sag" or "hag" (which sound different than "bog," "sog," or "hog"--all of which have pure "ah" sounds even though they're spelled with "o"s).

In any case, "Niagara" usually rhymes with "Viagra."

This review/overview is in finnish only.

In short: Easy to learn, easy to play and the components are gorgeus. Confusingly written rules for such a simple game and somehow too shallow gameplay. There just isn't too much to do in this game...

I like it thought, because it is fast game to play and I really like the river board and the mechanism of the river. Too bad I rarely get to play this game since not many gets excited by the theme or the play mechanics.

This is also my first video review so this is kinda experimental.

On the other side of the Canada/US border, we have:

(taken from Wikipedia; not to scale)

Similar to the American naming conventions:
1¢ (maple leaves) = "penny"
5¢ (beaver) = "nickel"
25¢ (caribou) = "quarter"
$1 (common loon) = "loonie"
$2 (polar bear) = "toonie" (e.g. "two-knee")
They all have Queen Elizabeth II on the other side:

There is a 50¢ piece, but it is extremely rare to see one in circulation.

There have also been many commemorative versions of each denomination depicting various events or figures. The images above are the most common, non-commemorative editions.

The paper notes are usually just called "five dollar bill," "ten dollar bill," etc. The notes are currently being (slowly) replaced. I've only seen the new $100 so far, which is entirely plastic and has transparent regions.

For more info, see here:

The Australians already have plastic notes and it is fantastic. Lasts ages and for a culture where much of the population lives on the coast, it doesn't matter if it gets wet. My brother once spent time on his gap year selling ice lollies on Bondi beach, and people would come straight up after swimming in the ocean and pay him with money they had kept in their pockets!

The current notes are mostly plastic but still feel papery. The new $100's feel like plastic.

Before the current notes, Canadian notes were made of cotton paper. It could also go through your laundry and come out looking good. Well, it would be wrinkled a little, but it wouldn't deteriorate like regular pulp paper.

I like the images on the backs on the 2001 Canadian Journey Series of bills better than those on the new ones. Hockey, peacekeeping, and a Bill Reed statue -- those are things that convey a uniquely Canadian identity.

"Medical innovation" and the robotic arm on a now-defunct space vehicle? Not so much. But the new security features and transparent bits sure look damn cool.

What's always funny to me that nobody knows who the people on the front of the bills are (except the Queen on the $20). Ask a Canadian who's on the US $5, and we know. Ask a Canadian who's on the Canadian $5, we can't tell you any more than that he's an old dead bald guy.

Apparently, Canada is one of the leaders in incorporating anti-counterfeiting devices into its currency. This new plastic money is supposed to have 3-5 times the life of the paper stuff.

Not to take anything away from Canada but...
*cough* New Zealand introduced this stuff in 1999 *cough*
which of course was some time after Australia did...

But then again our coins are all minted in Canada!

Also, I believe the color-changing ink used for a time on Canadian bills was also a Canadian invention. I hear its pretty pricey and next-to-impossible to obtain unless you own a mint.
