Yeah, that's the format, and they're useless unless you have two books. I think I read somewhere that they were designed by the same guy/company that did Ace of Aces
.

Correct. Also the gunfighter saloon shootout book set (forget the name). IIRC, there were some later licensed "spin-off" books by another company.

Great find. Takes a little getting used to the moves but a lot of fun. I remember a family and friends game con I put on in the early '90's. Two of my friends grab several of these books and ended up playing for a good part of the afternoon. They were hooked.

He's a hard hitter though, a couple of good Downswing Smash's and even the strongest characters are on the ropes. The Skeleton is actually my favorite as it requires real finesse to win, unlike the high hit point characters who are straightforward brawlers.

Just don't put him up against the Dwarf w/ Battle Axe. The Dwarf opens with a side swing and you are dead. I could not find a way to close on him. Dwarf got something like +7 for that attack (it's been awhile) and even the Skeleton's shield couldn't save him.

He is also pretty much a pushover. He looks impressive at first, but against an enemy who knows how to play you are pretty much at an auto loss. For most enemies thats a guaranteed auto loss. Book needs some minor patches IMO (better damage modifier - maybe 0 - for the hook leg move at long range)

Very fast one-on-one battles. If you have several characters, you can mix and match and make interesting battles. Each character has its own special moves and you must play to those strengths, while going for your opponent's weaknesses. For some reason, the skeleton's ability to pick up lost bones and add them to his body points always cracks me up.

When I was teaching Mistermarino this, I gave him the dwarf with the long-handled battle axe. I took the skeleton. On the opening move, he did a side swing and killed me. We tried again: another sideswipe and another kill. Finally, I said, "Quit sideswiping me, so I can close in and teach you how to play this game."

Ha ha. Dwarf is the only book I have that gets a positive bonus for a long range side swing and the skeleton is weak enough to not be able to handle such a hit.

Lost Worlds is without a doubt one of the games I've played the most of all the games listed here. We played the crap out of these titles as teenagers and kept trying to come up with ways to use the books to resolve combat in roleplaying games. The game still holds a soft spot in my heart and I will never turn down the offer of a duel.

Lost Worlds - One of my regrets from when I ran the Board Games Department is that I didn't reinstate two classic Flying Buffalo Games as tournaments: Lost Worlds and Nuclear War. These terrific older games are still fun and appealing even for modern audiences. Although Nuclear War has some mechanics that some frown upon these days (player elimination, randomness), Lost Worlds is actually still a pristine, luckless and enjoyable design that delights even today.

For those that don't know, Lost Worlds is a combat book game. Players pick their characters from a huge library of warriors and creatures and engage in hand-to-hand combat. The books have pictures of the characters in combat and so your opponent has the right perspective, you hand your book to the other player and keep the card with your maneuvers on it. Then, you exchange maneuvers and battle it out until one of you sustains too much damage. The characters are widely varied and there's a magic system that I never really used much. You can also play it multiplayer with multiple books - all the more appropriate when you fight the larger creatures.

Flying Buffalo was actually at the convention in the dealer room but I missed the chance to get my son in there so he could pick out some new books from the huge collection of them. There are some neat anime books that Flying Buffalo has that are a bit risque for my eleven year old but they are pretty cool and I'm sure they can only widen the appeal of the series.

I think I'm going to ask our Board Games Director to see if we can get them back on the schedule - especially Lost Worlds. I'm going to put some of my duplicate books into the Board Game Library so people can try out this fun game that works well for all ages.

Minimum bid: $40

These are twelve of the Nova books, including Man in Chainmail with Sword and Shield, Woman with Quarterstaff, Barbarian with Two-Handed Sword, Samurai with Katana, Wraith with Sickle, Manticore, Unicorn, Hill Troll with Club, Winged Gargoyle with Scimitar, Lizard Man with Scimitar and Buckler, Cold Drake, Fighter Mage with Magic Sword (complete with cardstock sword Karcilabran), and Tome of Red Magic, vol. 1. All books have held up well since they were published in the 80s. The folder for the Red Tome spell cards shows signs of wear, and there are two light stains on the back cover of the Troll book.

Sold to Bixby for $40.

EDIT: Oops, I was so intent on being a smart-ass that I missed the minimum bid. Better make it $40 to conceal the fact I cannot read and cover up my embarrassment.

I recently sold my batch of Lost Worlds on BGG. In my opinion, these Lost Worlds books in David's auction will retain their value for long long time. They are a part of gaming history. If I wasn't a retiring old geezer, I would have held on to mine. I'll bet he could get more than his minimum if he sold them on ebay. What could be more fun for two? Eh? ....laugh

I love the system of book games that Alfred Leonardi designed. They're quick to play and very portable.I chose to list the Lost World books over the Ace of Aces series because they seem to be slightly more obscure, although I prefer Ace of Aces myself. The lost world series of books come up on e-bay regularly at reasonable prices, the Ace of Aces books also come up on e-bay but are quite a bit more expensive.

Minimum bid: $60 $50

These are thirteen of the Nova books, including Man in Chainmail with Sword and Shield, Woman with Quarterstaff, Barbarian with Two-Handed Sword, Samurai with Katana, Wraith with Sickle, Manticore, Unicorn, Hill Troll with Club, Winged Gargoyle with Scimitar, Lizard Man with Scimitar and Buckler, Cold Drake, Fighter Mage with Magic Sword (complete with cardstock sword Karcilabran), and Tome of Red Magic, vol. 1. I've had these since they were first published in the mid-80s, so they've aged a bit. (As have we all.) The pages are all very secure in each book. The folder for the Red Tome spell cards shows signs of wear, there are two light stains on the back cover of the Troll book, and the Samurai has a spot of mold. (As have we all.)

A fun, light, dice-less combat system. Each book is a character. We used to play this between classes or over the phone. My most-used character was the dwarf in chainmail with axe.

Just FYI, most of those books are only worth $2-$3 each, with some of them being essentially worthless (man in chainmail and skeleton, I'm looking at you).
