This was my favorite character. I named him "Eddie" after the Iron Maiden mascot.

Very fast one-on-one battles. If you have several characters, you can mix and match and make interesting battles. Each character has its own special moves and you must play to those strengths, while going for your opponent's weaknesses. For some reason, the skeleton's ability to pick up lost bones and add them to his body points always cracks me up.

Felt the same 'something's missing' I think.
Well, except she thought there should be a torture game based on the system.

Lost Worlds is without a doubt one of the games I've played the most of all the games listed here. We played the crap out of these titles as teenagers and kept trying to come up with ways to use the books to resolve combat in roleplaying games. The game still holds a soft spot in my heart and I will never turn down the offer of a duel.

Lost Worlds - One of my regrets from when I ran the Board Games Department is that I didn't reinstate two classic Flying Buffalo Games as tournaments: Lost Worlds and Nuclear War. These terrific older games are still fun and appealing even for modern audiences. Although Nuclear War has some mechanics that some frown upon these days (player elimination, randomness), Lost Worlds is actually still a pristine, luckless and enjoyable design that delights even today.
For those that don't know, Lost Worlds is a combat book game. Players pick their characters from a huge library of warriors and creatures and engage in hand-to-hand combat. The books have pictures of the characters in combat and so your opponent has the right perspective, you hand your book to the other player and keep the card with your maneuvers on it. Then, you exchange maneuvers and battle it out until one of you sustains too much damage. The characters are widely varied and there's a magic system that I never really used much. You can also play it multiplayer with multiple books - all the more appropriate when you fight the larger creatures. Flying Buffalo was actually at the convention in the dealer room but I missed the chance to get my son in there so he could pick out some new books from the huge collection of them. There are some neat anime books that Flying Buffalo has that are a bit risque for my eleven year old but they are pretty cool and I'm sure they can only widen the appeal of the series. I think I'm going to ask our Board Games Director to see if we can get them back on the schedule - especially Lost Worlds. I'm going to put some of my duplicate books into the Board Game Library so people can try out this fun game that works well for all ages.

I love the system of book games that Alfred Leonardi designed. They're quick to play and very portable.I chose to list the Lost World books over the Ace of Aces series because they seem to be slightly more obscure, although I prefer Ace of Aces myself. The lost world series of books come up on e-bay regularly at reasonable prices, the Ace of Aces books also come up on e-bay but are quite a bit more expensive.

I've had these since they were first published in the mid-80s, so they've aged a bit. (As have we all.) The pages are all very secure in each book. The folder for the Red Tome spell cards shows signs of wear, there are two light stains on the back cover of the Troll book, and the Samurai has a spot of mold. (As have we all.)

A fun, light, dice-less combat system. Each book is a character. We used to play this between classes or over the phone. My most-used character was the dwarf in chainmail with axe.
