Eon version with the alien in the pic, as shown.

All of the components are accounted for. Two cards, a 6 and an 8, were modified to have other text on them, then modified again to turn them back into a 6 and an 8. These cards look just fine on the starfield backside and are indistinguishable from other cards held in your hand.

Box is worn and a little faded. Corners and edge rips have been taped. Rules show wear.

Smoke-free home.

Free shipping within the continental US. First $10 elsewhere.

This is as close to perfect as a game can get for my tastes. It has a manageable playing time, nearly infinite variety, and is surprisingly social. Some of the very best gaming experiences I have had were had with this game. I can think of no other game that has gone through so many iterations and editions, has spawned so many expansions and fan-made additions, been so influential in the genesis of other games, nor remain as relevant as Cosmic Encounter. My only regret is that I already have three editions of the game, and I can't convince my wife that I NEED the FFG version.

1977 - Cosmic Encounter

An instant classic as far as I was concerned. I probably spent more time figuring how I thought certain powers would match up or combine than I did actually playing the game, as this game is not wife-friendly, at least for MY wife (YMMV). Heaviest play was probably in the early 80s, when I worked at Mattel Electronics. Several other people there were already Cosmic fans and some at-work games were played. It reared its head again at my current job, when we (the company, not me personally) were peripherally involved in the launch of Cosmic Encounter On-line. The creators/owners of CE even came to our company Christmas Party one year.

Runners Up

The Winning Ticket - Another game that saw repeat play inside the family in the late 80s/early 90s, though there is not a lot to distinguish it.

Black Box - Another deduction game that holds up well, with nice components, too.

Swedish version of the original CE. Is it worth $4.5? Seems to go for marginally more on a random Swedish auction site.

After jumping into the hobby with both feet, I often found people referring to this game, but without access to it (this was before the FFG reprint) it was mostly a mystery. I think part of what intimidated me in this game was the wide variety of versions that had been published, often with different rules (are we using flares? What about moons, etc.) I tried to read the rules, but couldn't wrap my head around it. On the surface, without having played it, it seemed to be just a giant confusing mess.

My first BGGcon seemed to be the perfect opportunity to try and tackle some of these games that had both intrigued and intimidated me. At that first BGGcon, having gone alone and not knowing anyone on BGG through forum activity or anything like that, I found myself standing around with nothing to do. So I figured "why not," grabbed Cosmic Encounter from the library, held up the box, and started walking around. That first game ended up having 6 people in it I think, including several veterans that were happy to explain things.

This ended up being the perfect introduction to this game, a lot of the ridiculous, broken powers were out there (like Virus) but the social dynamic of the game really shined through, with everyone teaming up against the more advantageous aliens and it all coming down to having the right cards in the end. I believe I ended up winning this in a shared victory, another new notion for me (that you could negotiate and win together). All in all, a great experience, and one that led directly to the next item.

This WEG edition. It also includes the first 3 Eon expansions, so it will play six players. On the negative side, the original plastic counters and cardboard discs aren't present. However, I have replaced the counters with wooden cubes from an old Risk set.

TRADED!

I tried this last April with no success, so let's give it another try. I became a convert to the Fantasy Flight version of this a couple of years ago, and now have the base game and both expansions. So, I'm now looking to rehome my Eon games copy. But that's not all: you see, I've got all nine expansions, too.
Cosmic Encounter: Expansion Set #1
Cosmic Encounter: Expansion Set #2
Cosmic Encounter: Expansion Set #3
Cosmic Encounter: Expansion Set #4
Cosmic Encounter: Expansion Set #5
Cosmic Encounter: Expansion Set #6
Cosmic Encounter: Expansion Set #7
Cosmic Encounter: Expansion Set #8
Cosmic Encounter: Expansion Set #9

Now, it's not perfect, but for a 34 year old game initially purchased by a grade school aged me, it's close. I repackaged the game into a box from Lords of Creation, a single counter of each color is missing (they're just dots, so replacements shouldn't be a biggie), and I've had to print replacements for two of the aliens standups. But all of the cards (I checked the official list), moons (same here), planet hexes (with alternate hex sides), etc., and the consolidated rule book (from expansion 9) are present and accounted for, with some minor wear. In response to previous inquiries, it is stink-free.

So, anybody interested? I consider this a spare copy, and would be willing to trade the entire kit and kaboodle for a single game. I'll pay for shipping this, too.

I'm sure this is a great game.... but I don't know if I want to give it another chance.

It fell victim to it being taught poorly.

The owner of the game had several versions mixed together, no rule book, included expansions, and then played the game cutthroat style, wanting to win at all costs.

Seriously poisoned my experience.

Give it another try with the correct rules and a decent group. The mix of variable player powers and negotiation make this a winner.

The new FFG edition of Cosmic Encounter makes this a good idea. The rules are tight and better than those in the original Eon edition; plus they include sensible suggestions about how to play the game with new players, which really work. Of course, CC is one of my favourite games, so I've got to stand up for it, don't I?

Really? From the way the people in the Rules forum explained it to me last I frequented the place, this is actually the worst and most ambiguous rulebook put out for the game.

Hmm. I guess I can only suggest that that was more to do with poor explanation on the part of those forum users than it was anything to do with the quality of the FFG rules; although I must admit that I knew the game already from back in the 80s. All the same, I'd put the CC rules above all the other FFG games I own for rules clarity. And FFG included timing rules which look like a foolproof system for adjudicating the interaction of various game effects. That alone makes the rules better than the original Eon ones in my book.

I would say that's more to do with playstyle than anything in the game itself. In my recent experience teaching the game new players did pretty much what you describe then, after a few games, they started being more careful about who they invited to ally and when. Myself: I would rarely invite a player to ally on the attack if winning would give them either 4 bases or more bases than me. But yes, I would agree that CC loses a lot of its fun if players are indiscriminate in their calls for allies.

I can agree with your statement here, but that would mean 5+ more games of this. I seriously considered setting up the next time we played with everyone at 4 so the tension was there from the get-go. Don't get me wrong, I would play this again, I just did not need this one in my collection.

Playing with FFG game I must say that their design of alien cards (which powers are obligatory, which not, what can be blosked what not and most of all in what phase does the power work) really helps to learn the game and to avoid endless bickering about power overlaps.

However: this is negotiation game drowning in chaos.
Players who want control over their destinies will not enjoy this at all. You can't play this one for a win, it's a roller-coaster.

My favorite find of the year was actually by my oldest daughter (my Columbus Ohio Thrift Minion). She called me from a yard sale with an unpunched Cosmic Encounter for $1.

My personal favorite find was Key To The Kingdom at GWO. Mainly because I saw it perched on top of the bins in the next aisle and my old arrrowhead hunting instincts kicked in. whistle
