This is a little more up my alley for a co-op. will never forget my first play with my sisters. My youngest sister asked, "so it's just us against a piece of cardboard?" We all got a nice little chuckle out of that. Especially after the game was over and she said, "Damn, that cardboard kicked our @ss!"

I have played this game more than games that i actually enjoy

The fact of the game is made to LOSE always, is not the wrong of this, but the fact that any knight you take made just one thing, and you have to stay forever doing it even you don´t like; some clash of social Classes appears here and in the disorder the end seem negative.

Being lover of Tactics and improvisation during game, this game is very dull and little creative about player actions.

More fun is in the social interaction that emerges in this game where a traitor hide, but as i said; if you want social intrigue interaction there are better choices like The Resistance that last less and have the very same excitement; in the time you play one shadow over camelot you could actually play The resistance 15 times!

I've played this three times, and we've always won. But I still can't stand it, will never suggest it, and groan inwardly whenever it's name is mentioned. This game is the perfect example of "mowing the lawn."

Some sad sap always has to "quest for the grail", which means move your hero to the Grail quest, sit there, and let people give you cards now and then when you run out. What a fun experience.

(groan)

I also hate games with such subjective rules about information you may or may not share with your neighbors. Agh.

We absolutely love The Resistance, too.

Friday - We had a quick 3 player game, well it actually lasted a long time but we ended up losing eventually. The players had to go home early. soblue So I played Total War: Shogun 2 until the wee hours of the morning. I bought it off steam on sale for $7.50 USD. I figured I couldn't go wrong for that price since I enjoyed the demo.

Saturday - We played 2 games of Runewars, which I enjoyed a lot. My wife not so much, she doesn't like the seasonal order mechanic at all. She prefers games that are less 'fiddly' in her opinion. Oh well...

Sunday - I played a mix of computer games. Company of Heroes for my WWII fix and Mass Effect 2 for my 3rd play through so I can see the Paragon options that I never saw before. First playthrough was Renagon, 2nd was pure Renagade. I also like to try out the different classes.

All in all a pretty good weekend.

We wrapped up Sunday with a great (somewhat truncated) 8-player game of this.

I don't know if this was supposed to happen in the absence of the Merlin expansion, but we ended up with 3 traitors. If we had continued it would've been a sure loss.

I was one of the traitors, and amassed a huge hand of strong fight cards, grail cards, and a healing card, without anyone seeming to noticed I was just sitting on it not doing anything, just twiddling my thumbs in Camelot (OK, I did discard 3 grails to heal myself a point) devil

This was Josephine's first play and she seemed to catch on with some early help from Theo.

Brennan, Drew, Chris, and I. As King, I led a strong push for the Grail, while Sir Purple (Chris) dueled the bridge knight for the armor. This time we foiled Gwinevere and stayed on task. We got the armor, and after a long (too-long) delay we obtained the Grail. By that point, there were lots of catapults but Purple and Orange (Drew) took them out. We lost Excalibur without a contest. The Saxons blitzed us early, but at least none of us died before the end. The dragon raided the countryside and left us at seven black swords. With the realm succumbed, Drew revealed as the traitor and claimed victory.

This game is hard. I'm getting the difficulty dialed in. I think with a 5th player we would have had enough momentum to claim the Grail two or three rounds sooner, leaving us more opportunity to carry on an effective struggle.

Trumpets sounded, knights answered their King's call! Huzzah!

Played with Merlin's Company (minus travel cards) and most witches.
Potential of 3 Traitors.

In a strange game, the Knights routed the game. We grabbed Excalibur and the Grail almost immediately. Todd confidently raced for Lancelot's Armor. We dodged Shadow cards for 2 full rounds of the table (hehe), taking Life hits and Siege Engines instead. When the bad stuff started, we had things well in hand. No Traitor seemed to be in play. Until.... Todd (the usually honorable Sir Gawain) nabbed Lancelot's Armor and was revealed as Villain when he immediately tanked the Dragon Hunt Quest. His damage was minimal, turned out he was working alone.

Knights of the Round Table: 11
Traitorous Bastages: 1
A rout (VERY unusual for this game...)

The Knights:
Scott - King Arthur
Jeremy - Sir Galahad
Chuck - Sir Lamorak
Rufus - Sir Percival
Mike McR - Sir Owain
Rob - Sir Tristan

LOVE THIS GAME! However not very easy to win when your the only traitor and no black cards get played the first two rounds and the grail and Excalibur both get finished those 2 rounds or very soon following. I had a good time trying to figure out how to win against those odds though.

I think the group in question only played this game once ... but we still talk about that experience because one guy acted like a traitor ... but wasn't. He poked the traitor in the side the entire game because he knew that guy was the traitor because he was "too quiet." This is the most reserved member of the group so I'm not sure how he picked up on that ... it was a good friend of his so he might have known the difference.

I have been desperately trying to trade for cooperative games (Pandemic, Lord of the Rings, etc.) to play with my son but I've had no luck.

This was the only cooperative game I owned and my son (age 9) loves to play it with me (technically it's for 3-8 players, but it's possible to beat with 2, just really hard) I haven't told him it's gone yet.

We started out with King Arthur (Peter) and three Knights: Sir Bedivere (me), Sir Galahad (divedeeper), and Sir Percival (David). First-game for three of us, so we didn't use the Travelling rules from the expansion. Sire organized a defense against the Saxons while I sought Lancelot's armor. Sir Percival tried to warn us of a dangerous dark card but after a few turns I chose to draw it -- and the foul siren Guinevere lured us all back to Camelot, forcing me to abandon the Armor's quest upon the verge of completion. At this point, Sir Owain (synchronized) answered the king's call and joined the Round Table. We began to seek the Grail, lost the Armor (which cost everybody a life point due to the 7 Witches), and repelled the Saxons once. Sir Gareth (Erin) and Sir Palomedes (morscordis) became recognized at the Table, and set out to woo the Lady, just in time to prevent the sword from being lost. We lost a jousting tournament, and the invaders sieged our shores, and we struggled mightily for the Grail -- but were dealt a devastating blow as Sir Owain revealed his dark Fate alliance and forced us all to discard two cards. At 11 catapults, we found time to drive back four, leaving five of us at one life. And then we all received a dinner invitation from Morgan...

Only Sir Palomedes survived the meal. He lasted for three rounds by himself before the realm succumbed. All the peoples hailed their new King, Owain.

With the Merlin's Company expansion, this is a hard game to win, so it's not like we played ineptly.

To recap: we lost the armor and did not win the other two large quests. The Travelling rules are largely a force for Good, and we did without them due to teaching complexity. I should have listened more carefully to Sir Percival's warnings about Guinivere's card. Synchronized's play of his Fate card was extraordinarily well timed. Things might have been better had we focused upon the Grail or Excalibur with more than half of our number at once? I'd never seen five knights slain at once by Morgan -- she's Eeeevil.

This was my first contribution to our game group and sadly didn't last very long. While we enjoyed the concept and the first few games once we understood how to use the traitor it became pretty easy to make the traitor win every match and not fun for everyone else.

Sure we could have played without but we never really got back to it after the initial disappointment.

I think you're either bad at the game or playing with a very small group. In a 3 player game with 1 traitor, it's hard for the loyalists to win. In larger groups even semi-competent play should win it for the good guys.

This game is interesting in that nongamers tend to do better in first games than long time gamers. If you just ignore the possibility of a traitor, a team working together should be able to overpower the game.

I remember playing this game with a church group of 7 players, most nongamers. The hostess hated it because she got the traitor both games and didn't see how she could win. Against competent loyalist play in a large game, it is nearly impossible for the traitor to win.

Just don't accuse a traitor until the very end. Then only do it if the unrevealed traitor rule will give the traitor the win. Remember, this isn't BSG. A traitor isn't allowed to reveal himself to gain the power of a traitor's turn.

The good players I know who play this game now don't allow ANY game related talk at the table, i.e. you can't say "I have a high card" or "let's go fight Picts". That's because any direct communication makes the game too easy.

There's a reason the game recommends doing things like lowering starting life points once players know the game.
