I had a hard time deciding this month on what to write about. I had some really wonderful gaming experiences this month. Highlights include:
- The Madison No-Ship Math Trade, in which I traded for some fantastic games, including Eurorails, Empire Builder, Field Commander Rommel, Successors 3rd ed., Tumblin' Dice, Defenders of the Realm, and a few others.
- A massive game of Here I Stand, which was by far the most epic game of the month, but since Here I Stand is 'new to me' it doesn't qualify.
- I had a great experience with non-gamers. I bowl in a casual 'beer Drinking' league with some friends. One night we decided to have a couple drinks at my place after bowling. Well we hung out in the Rec room due to its proximity to my bar and as I mixed up a couple drinks and in-between them gawking at my game collection they started messing around with Tumblin' Dice. I set it up on the table and we played a three team game as couples and had an absolute blast. They intended to come over for a drink and it ended up being past 2am before the night ended.

However, the best gaming experience of the month has to go to playing Eurorails right after the math trade. Eurorails (and Empire Builder) are probably the definitive pick up and deliver game. Drawing track with crayons, delivering cotton to Birmingham and swine to Raleigh was never as much fun. I hadn't played a crayon game in 20 years but this brought back those fantastic memories.

We've been playing a lot of Empire Builder lately. Highly recommend using wet erase markers over crayons. I bought a clear plastic table cover and use that to over the actual board.

I always search the puzzle section, even at a place like Bookman's (in Phoenix) where they should know the difference between a game and a puzzle. But yet I say the Mayfair logo amongst all the puzzles and knew I had found something. Bookman's shrinkwraps everything so after removing the shrink, I come to find that this game was also shrinkwrapped. They are the only ones that I know that will shrinkwrap a game already in the shrink. This is the short box version of the edition pictured. $8.00 at Bookmans - brand new!

1) What is the logic of shrinkwrapping a shrinkwrapped box?

2) Why would they price a "puzzle" at $8?

1. I have no idea butit works for me as I can safely remove the outer shrink wrap and know its never been opened.

2. I think $8 is the minimum price they charge for a board game or a puzzle.

Maybe it was with the games and someone tried to hide it while they went to get some cash?

Picked this up in a hobby games store in Canada on holiday in my teens, and it rapidly became our most played game. My parents didn't know where to buy hobby games in England, so we rarely got any - and most of the ones they did find they didn't like very much (e.g. Civilization - too long). Occasionally we got lucky, but this is the first one I remember playing regularly that wasn't in the family game genre (although I had way more "family games" than most people - my parent's ame collection contained over 100 games when I was a child).

This particular copy was acquired sometime in 2001-02 (I can't say for sure, just that I bought it while working for a games distributor, so I know what the time frame was).

It's complete, all load stickers have been applied to the chips, but it's never been played (crayons are still in the baggie).

Minor shelfwear.

Staying Power: 10.32

As mentioned above, Eurorails has become the crayon rails game of choice, partly (as I explained in last year's Staying Power GeekList) because the new version is better balanced and partly because Bernie enjoys it. I even won a game in which I connected every Scandinavian city except for Aarhus (I tried not to listen to the cards, but they shouted too loudly and I gave in.)

I played crayon rails at WBC, but in three games I got three second places---not good enough to make the finals.

Chris watched the CC:E game for a bit, then when Chicago Express broke up, he, Brian, and David Hood played a round of this crayon rail game.

Eurorails, $2.00 at nearby church thrift shop.

As I pick it up and start looking through the few games on the shelf, a guy comes over and asks if I am looking for toys.

"nah, I'm just looking at games today."

"I'm just about to bring out three more bins of them from outside"

"I'll help you!"

Anyway, the bins ended up having the usual selection of trivial pursuits and Scene It!s, and a few party games.

As I'm leaving with Eurorails, I check out the FREE table, and grab complete Scattergories, Boggle, Taboo, Yahtzee, and Where in the USA is Carmen Sandiego. Good for the many Yankee Swaps and surprise gifts I most likely have coming my way.

Later in the afternoon, I'm out running, and go past the place again, with its front doors open. I look in and see the free table loaded up again, and snag Dinosaurs Extinct?, Smess, Apples to Apples Junior, Topple, Trivial Pursuit, Clue, and DVD Candy Land. Good stuff for little cousins and the kids I sit for. Running home with the toppling stack of games afterward was not the most fun I've ever had in my life

I would've felt bad about grabbing all these games, but as I was grabbing the second load, one of the ladies that worked there came out and thanked me for making room on the table. YOU ARE WELCOME.

13 games for $2.00? Neato mosquito.

YAAAAY!!! My TSS package arrived today! And it only had to travel from Philomath, OR near my old stomping grounds!

I opened the box, and saw nothing was wrapped. Darn!whistle (while writing this up, I saw there was a note from my TSS on the wishlist page telling me this. Oops.)

Sitting right on top was a Ravensburger game Barricade! This looks like a really good strategy variation on Aggravation/Trouble/Sorry/Parcheesi!

My dog was very uninterested in what my TSS sent me though... must have been a cat in the backyard.

Next up was... Regatta!

Woohoo! Gave this one away to my target last year, so am glad to get it back. In great shape too!

Lifting Regatta out and I see two more... OMG! Bazaar and EURORAILS! OMGOMGOMG.

I LOVE Empire Builder, so to get this expansion, WOW!! And it wasn't even on my wishlist! And Bazaar, the rarest of the three 3M bookshelf games I still needed. Wow and WOW!

Well, it looks like that was it.. wait, what is this in the packing foam?

Dice for chunky fighters! Now I really need to get going on finding enough to get a game of this going... Look out Vancouver Goodwills, you are about to go bankrupt on Yahtzee Jr.'s...

So there it is...

Thank you Thrifty SS! You made my Christmas great!

Oh my gosh... I forgot to include in all the pics Frog Juice! My wife took it out of the box when I wasn't paying attention and was looking at it while I took pictures, then put it on our shelf with all my other Gamewright games...

Great addition to my growing collection of Gamewrights!

So once again, Thank you Secret Santa! You did a great job!

This isn't Thrifty Santa related, but I just HAD to share this with someone! For a long time, my wife has not been very thrilled about my thrifting, my growing collection, or the space it takes up in our house. But in the last few months, there has been a real turn around in her attitude which has been helped by me organizing things a bit better, purging some of the useless stuff I had accumulated, and selling some games that I was not interested in that I could get some returns on.

So I was super surprised when she started asking about my BGG wishlist a month or so ago. She asked me some questions, did a little research, and got me the EXACT three games that are at the top of my list for Christmas (after Thrifty SS fulfilled a few good ones, which did not duplicate, thank goodness!) So we had Christmas early tonight, and it turns out she spent her Christmas bonus on games and got me Survive: Escape from Atlantis!, Power Grid, and Breakthru, which is the next to last 3M bookshelf game I need (besides Chess) to complete my run of that series!

I just cannot believe she did such an amazing job of not only splurging on me this financially tight year, but also got the perfect games for me! She is so incredible, and I'm so thrilled to be married to her!!

She even suggested we take Survive to my family's for Christmas and play it with everyone!

Update: My family of non-gamers played Survive, and we loved it! Played twice in a row, and can't wait to play more!

Yeah, I haven't been getting much grief yet, but a few eBay sales ($5 shrink Life: T&T for $100? Several other $3 games for $40, $40, $80, $40, $30?) help that a lot. As does thinning things out. The combination is very good for thrifters as well as spouses.

That's still above and beyond the call of wifehood, though. Good job to both of you!

I was really excited when I came home and noticed A box on the porch, so I opened the box and found three items all wrapped up. So I unwrapped the first present to find Eurorails a game that wanted so I have a different map then the one that came in Empire Builder. The second present I unwrapped was Thunderstone: Doomgate Legion I was happy because I wanted an expansion to Thunderstone. The last present was Thunderstone: Wrath of the Elements Now I was really happy because I now have two expansions to Thunderstone. I want to give a huge THANK YOU to my Secret Santa and wish them a Merry Christmas

The first crayon-rail game I played was my moms friends copy of Chinarails. I enjoyed the game so much that it motivated me to get one for myself so I got Empire Builder because unlike Chinarails I have an idea of where all the Cities are. Now I think it is time to learn a new map so I chose Europe because I think it will be easier to learn. Note that I only THINK this.

Dead or alive on November 1, at 2:00 am, BGG server time.

In honor of the name "Barticus", I would like to play something with a Roman theme. But looking on my shelves, I see very few games that would qualify: Civilization, or Advanced Civilization will probably not get played, due to the difficulty in getting together sufficient players for such a time commitment. So therefore, I pick Eurorails, which at least has the city of Rome in it.

The classic crayon rail game.

Latest version (4th edition).

Played once. Excellent condition except one train card is very slightly water damaged (the train cards are neither randomised nor secret so it won't impact gameplay). I was going to take a photo to show the difference but I couldn't work out which one it was.

Took a (bad) photo anyway. Spot the difference. Sorry it's a bit fuzzy. Anyway you won't need to use all six cards unless you play with six people.

Edit - added photo.
