Arnold Hendrick's Barbarian Prince is a solitaire story driven fantasy adventure game.

Barbarian Prince has a fierce reputation for being hard to win but still a fun game to play.

Most of the Dwarfstar back catalog are now available in authorised PnP editions and BP comes in its original format and also in a fully revised graphic edition.

Barbarian Prince Graphic Redesign Counters

Todd Sanders made a wonderful graphic redesign of Barbarian Prince. I finished all but the counters back in January. Finally got the counters done in Feb. They were done on a die cutter that a friend has access to.

The location counters I decided to make round so they fit perfectly in the hexes on the map. Much nicer looking then squares!

3rd Game: Barbarian Prince

Info: Solo RPG adventure game
Reason for making this game? Simple, I fell in love with Todd's revamped artwork.

Materials: 14gsm paper
1mm cardboard

Technique: Printed every single files (HQ option on printer) on 140gsm. I've had troubles splitting the A3 map size into two A4 size, my free adobe reader didn't provide the option. Tried it with other softwares (forgot the names but it was mentioned here on BGG), but it requires image file instead of PDF. So Todd has been super kind enough to help me out to solve the problem. Thanks very much for going through all the trouble, I appreciate it.

So far, that's it for now. Will update the progress.

●●● Update 1: I've now laminated, trimmed and round cornered the two A4 maps, character tracking sheet, enemy tracker, travel tables and items.

●●● Update 2: I love looking at the thick maps of my just completed Pocket Civ, therefore I decided to extend the love to my Barbarian Prince project as well. I've substituted the already completed laminated maps with a new map that is mounted on a thick cardboard. It looks and feels better. Not to forget that I also taped the map (before cutting) with a clear tape to give a layer of protection.

I finished the project with cutting out the tokens that is backed with the same cardboard, and also taped (before cutting; refer picture below). Components and maps are then sorted for a photoshoot. Finally, tokens are then bagged and stored.

It's amazing how simple it is to make this game. With minimal components and little time, you can easily make this one in a day, except that I took like 2-3 weeks to get everything done, silly.

Status: Incomplete Finally completed. Yeay!

Just a tiny update which I hope is not too late although it's already April. The game is finally completed and I really like the end product especially the mounted maps.

I'm new to the paragraph system, and I'm excited to try it. Hope to get a play or two asap.

Thanks for following guys.

Great job, Todd!

Just started making this yesterday. Everything's printed, now I just need to laminate the map and trackers and I'm off to have a grand adventure!
I had purchased some mounted gameboards from spielmaterial some time a go, and I was hoping to mount the map on one of those. Unfortunately that would've required some resizing of the map to make it fit properly. So I'm just going to settle for a laminated map for now...

EDIT: And it's done, now all I need is time to play

Play Area.

Just homebrewed the new-vision version of Barbarian Prince. The map is printed on some nice 192gm/m2 cardboard stock, the player-aids are done on regular 80gm paper then laminated. The counters are cardboard mounted and the rule books ring-bounded and I am using some spare wooden cubes as game markers. The new manual is wonderfully redesign and my easier to navigate than the old version. Playing it now.

Close up of map.

Its been awhile since I last play this game (I have to original version as well), I started this game on the right upper most corner of the map, got some allies and then some gold in a couple of big fights, enough to make offerings to a nearby temple I found, after a couple of tries and having to bribe one of the priests, I got a lucky roll in and I was given the staff of command for a holy crusade and being a penniless pauper now, the fighting monks given to me, ran away immediately due to lack of food and lodgings!!! But it was only 4 hexes and a river to cross to get back north and to win the game.

Woohoo! Luck first game again!

Prelude: The Murkwiddle Tavern

Autumn in Murkwiddle. And you’re at the Bloody Bear, sousing yourself for what lies ahead. The barkeep, Sama, has been busy serving all afternoon. The harvest festival is on its cusp, and local folk are getting in their last bottoms before travelers take over the place for a week. You’ve already been mistaken for a festal by more than a few locals.

Looking around, you see a few faces here and there that don’t make your bile rise. Perhaps one of them would have made an acceptable adventuring partner on your journey. Their poor luck.

While you have been surveying the rest of the tavern, a well-dressed halfling, smelling of sweat and rotgut, has been slipping glances your way. As you sit back and drain your mug halfway, he casually comes up to you with his hand in his pocket. Sliding back the chair across from you, he lowers his voice and offers you a wager, a bet over a simple game:

~ The Barbarian Dice Toss ~

“It’s easy, see? A child could play, a fool could play, even the dogs in Keln play! You take these stones, see? Dice, they call them. A pretty piece each one is, too, with its shaped and numbered sides. Tools of the gods, make no mistake. I’ve got five, one shaped and numbered to four, one to six, one to eight, one to ten, one to twelve. I hear tell that Barbarians like the twelve-sider best, not that it makes no matter to us.” He winks.

“Take these five, toss them on the table. I’ll do the same. If you roll three of the five dice higher than I roll those same three, I’ll accept defeat. You, noble friend, break all ties. How can you lose?” He stops and stares at you. “What do you say? Shall we ... wager? I have a coin or two says the gods favor me more than they’ll do for you ...”

You may decline to play, or you can wager 1 or 2 gold. The choice is yours. If you decide to wager and play, please use the geek-randomizer to roll five separate rolls: 1d4, 1d6, 1d8, 1d10, and 1d12.

As you step out to bait it, the Wyvern descends. Judging its trajectory as it plummets, you swing at its face. It screams in pain, but its momentum is too great to save you now. You turn to run, but it clasps you in its claws, dragging you across the ground and battering your boots against the rocks that strew it.

Luckily, you had the presence of mind to grab your sword. Your frantic swing as the beast fell upon you has hit home—barely. It has pierced the Wyvern, but in the ensuing struggle, its blade has snapped off halfway, leaving you with a Broken Rusty Longsword (–1).

But that's not what's foremost in your mind. Nor is your sword in your hand, for that matter. Part of it is in the Wyvern—a fairly large part, all things considered. The other part of it is on the ground, where you'd very much like to be. You can't believe you've lost your sword again.

And in moments you are on the ground as well. The Wyvern, surprised at the wasp stinging it fiercely in its underbelly, drops you from several heights up and takes to the air once more. Your ribs would ache from the fall if they didn't ache from its claws already. You're glad you weren't wearing armor; you'd need a tin opener to get yourself out after the grip you just went through.

Painfully hobbling to your feet, you look about for your broken sword as the Wyvern flies higher and higher once more, its angry screams fading into the sky.

When you find your blade, you're tempted to toss it back down again. It is no longer a longsword, but a shortsword, and a splintered one to boot.

But as you thumb the edge of the blade disheartenedly, you feel an acidic burn against your fingers and jerk your hand back in time to see the skin on the pads of your fingers bubble and blister. A few drops of blood rise on the weals of your skin.

At least this part of your father's tales was true: Wyvern blood isn't something to be taken lightly. Your Broken Rusty Longsword (–1) is now a Poisoned Broken Rusty Longsword (+0).

And as you turn to face it, the Wyvern wheels and charges you once more. You try to stand before it, but the force of wind it pushes before it is nearly enough to knock you over. You can only imagine what the beast itself will do to you.

Determined to fight but unsure how, you leap aside, swinging wildly at the Wyvern as it rakes the air where you were standing moments before. You think you landed a blow; you can't be sure.

Skidding in the dirt and silted gravel, the Wyvern wheels on its haunches to face you, and begins to walk, an odd, stilted squat, toward you, beating its wings on the ground. You realize that it will be able to reach you long before you can strike it.

But you stand your ground anyway. You couldn't otherwise. Its screams are burrowing through your mind, wreaking havoc on any semblance of self-control you still have. You suffer 1 SP damage.

With the last ounces of willpower you have left, you advance on the Wyvern, swinging insanely, beating the air with your shattered sword.

And sooner rather than later, your splintered blade catches one of the beast's wingtips as they spew dirt before you.

The Wyvern recoils in rage, then curls its wing in anguish. You see blood spewing from its wingtip; you seem to have severed a wingfinger. But your heart sinks. Such a blow will not kill such a beast.

But the Wyvern, perhaps little used to prey fighting back, hesitates, then retreats. It scrabbles slowly backward, still eyeing you. Then, slowly, smoldering with a hate you can see, it takes to the sky, limping through the air. You fear to turn your back on it; you believe it will return.

So you back slowly away, feeling behind you and glancing backward every now and again. You continue on your slow, backward way as the Wyvern's screams fade slowly into the distance.

Chapter 1-5: At the Crossroads

The sounds of the shrieking Wyvern grow fainter and fainter behind you as you stumble wearily across the rough slopes of the mountain feet. You wonder whether you’re up for the task, whether you’re ready for what lies ahead. Perhaps you would have been better off staying in the tavern, settling down somewhere, joining a village or a town, even, trying to make a life instead of discover one. Doubt creeps into your mind, and it weighs heavily on you. You start to yourself and realize that you’ve stopped at a lonely crossroad.

One path, the path you’re on, leads forward, into the heart of the Mountains of Madness. But branching off from it is a road offering safe passage—if not back to the Murkwiddle, then to new lands with people, with towns and villages, with commerce and trade and building. It runs to the right, and your heart flies back to the tavern, to coins on tables and ale in mugs. It runs to the left, and your mind runs after it to places you’ve never been, opportunities you’ve never taken, adventures waiting for you to embark on them.

You look ahead and see nothing but nothingness, empty mountains where your father, if he is in them, once lay dead.

You try to will yourself to move, but cannot. You are frozen in a moment of sheer indecision.

You may flee the mountains. If you do, you will receive the special runner-up micro for surviving the adventure:

mb Mountains of Madness—Lived to see another day...

If you press onward, this badge will be off the table and you will not be able to claim it.

Discretion is, as they say, the better part of valor. You may have given up much, but you feel you have gained more. You follow the road where it leads, and sooner rather than later, you find yourself back in the tavern once more, preparing to set out on safer adventures and more reasonable quests. There is something to be said for surviving, after all.

Only a couple of days have passed since you left on your journey. Likely none of those around you even realize what horrors you faced. They go about their lives not knowing what lies in the mountains just outside the tavern window. You order an ale and sip it slowly ... trying not to think of what might have been, had you not gone there ... and back again.

My re-visioning of Barbarian Prince

(at least the photos until BGG approves all the files [and a note, there are multiple files in each of the eventual file sections. if you are interested in crafting a copy of the game, wait until i give the all clear])

Complete game and all components. Character/Followers tracking boards and the 4 map boards are full sheet sticker paper mounted to 1/8" hobby plywood. The tracking boards use heavy book tape hinge them together. The rules/events books i have re-designed for easier readability and have included both single and double sided versions.

I painted a barbarian miniature for my build of the game and also used some building meeples I had to represent the castle and temple locations on the map.

The 6 double sided travel table cards, each mounted to double thickness card stock for a heavier feel.

Close up of the Character and Followers tracking sheets. Instead of pen and paper I am driving the re-design with eurocubes and counters (so you can know who is in your party of adventurers and what they are carrying). Much less bookkeeping and more in line with the kind of bits we use in games these days.

The new Followers, Location and Item counters for the game with reference numbers to the events and rules. If I've added anything to the game it is these.

Everything packed away in one 9x12 box

much much thanks to those who have collated, added to and corrected everything before i decided to re-design the game. i hope my design might spur some new interest in it.

looks like i have some readability adjustments to make as well (how it goes when you dont have access to all the printers out there people print on). don't print anything further up yet until i give the all clear and everything has been uploaded. sorry again for the delay. there is a lot of cross referencing with all the parts and pieces. doing some shakedown game plays to make sure all is good.

want to make this as good as i can.

started figuring out how to play this game as part of my research for a game i am designing.

one thing i felt it was missing was a nice character tracker. so tonight i put one together. i'll upload a photo tomorrow once i have it mounted on some 1/8" plywood

i will use a bunch of eurocubes in different colors for each of the tracks

ok back on track for the thread - a teaser of my PnP build for Barbarian Prince.

the files i've re-designed are making their way through the BGG upload process as are photos of all components. I have additional maps and such to group inside each file section, so do not start downloading anything until i give the all clear.

i found a nice barbarian miniature to paint (though i am hardly good at that yet) and also used some building meeples i had around to add some 3d splash to the map. the map i did in 4 sections, using 1/8' plywood for the base so i can easily set up/pack away everything. i may end up doing a super large print of the map.

i'll post the full set of photos in the January list, once they are approved

I will go with Barbarian Prince. I got a copy of it when I was just out of High school and it was great to play while I was working the night shift for an answering service. Many times I ended up dying on the very first day of the adventure but would start all over again. The randomness made the game change every time. I am surprised that no one has made a small computer version of it (or I have not found it)

While standing at the entrance of the lair, Echduh stared at the intricate carvings in the fortified door. Being a brute didn't mean being not a brute of the world after all. So, standing in front of a door he was. A door that was keeping him from killing, slaughtering, plundering and in general: being a badass Brute that he was known for. The blade was sharpened, the most lethal moves were studied again and practiced against a fluttering butterfly (what do you expect from a level 1 brute?) and boy, was he ready to wreak some havoc inside!

Which wonders would he marvel at, which baddies would he cut up *bad*. And let's be honest guys, which maidens would he oh so gently free from the clutches of some oversized critter. Yeah, dragons, I'm talking to you you wee-big pretentious salamanders...

He kept on sharpening that blade and wishing for better things. Now if only that door could open...

Level 2 - Room 3 - Narrow Hallway
You have entered what appears to be a narrow hallway. The hallway twists and turns - you can hardly see around each corner as you make your way. The hallway slopes slightly downwards.

Lvl 2 challenge 1d100 = (68) = 68

As you make your way you realize that an ancient arcane magic is at work here. Make an Intelligence Check at DR15 to avoid the magic or suffer 4 damage.

Echduh laughs with pools of water. He got through! Was someone, high above, watching over him? Directing him? Steering him towards doom? Or a big pile of sparkly things? Only time would tell...

The hallway in front him, that was his next goal. But he noticed a nagging feeling in the back of his mind. If you could call it that but he felt something between his two ears. His hand slowly slided towards his blade... Why did he sharpen it so tediously and thoroughly this morning? Bad thoughts were suddenly appearing, out of nothing and he began to feel real fear. Magic? The stuff from those snotty "intelligent" and "bright" wizards? He forced himself to think more clearly, all or nothing :

1d20-5 = (5) - 5 = 0

Don't ever call a wizard snotty - they are too much for you!

You have descended into the depths of the Dungeon of Doom and have died. With a heroes resolve you withstood what you could but in the end the forces of darkness were simply too much for you to overcome. A valiant attempt - your next of kin recover your treasures and so your legacy lives on.

Thank you for playing in the RPG Geek Dungeon of Doom. Your initial geeklist post above has been tipped by your Dungeon Master the amount of geekgold equal to the gold you have found in the dungeon (other adventurers may also tip you as they feel appropriate). Any items you found beyond Armor and Weapons will be given to you as microbadges shortly.

You are free to post on the The Official Dungeon of Doom Commiseration Thread to discuss your victory or defeat. Your DMs don’t want to hear your bad beat story - they have other adventures to run! Go to the tavern like other slain heroes and tell the bartender instead.

Farewell, brave adventurer! Until our next Encounter...

This is a classic and favorite of mine so I made it first. BP was truly a "pocket boardgame" as the game included a metal miniature (Cal Arath), fold up cardboard hex game board, rule book, event book, dice and tracking sheet.

Still very popular and still a very good game.

Excellent condition inside and out. This has the two original dice and the pewter Barbarian Prince figure. There are a couple of spots on the box with extremely minor crushing, but this is hardly noticeable. A nice copy of this long OOP game.

Sweetener:

Outpost Gamma

Another Dwarfstar micro-game from the early '80s, Outpost Gamma. Excellent condition inside and out.

Free shipping to lower 48 U.S. states; first $10 elsewhere.

Some time ago, I began the first of many "Solo Game" periods, where I'd make a mad dash for interesting solo titles. For some reason, I really enjoy them, though I have to admit I go in and out of it (sometimes I won't play a Solo game for months, other times I can't sleep until I finish 'that last move') It was during my first of these "Solo jaunts" that I learned about Barbarian Prince. I'd heard about it in "Murphy's Rules" (which has several comedic references to the game) but I didn't realize it was actually a solo board game; had always figured it for a role playing game.

ANYWAY... enough of my blather.

I picked this one up in a Math Trade run by BGG's own Jack Kaye. It's a relatively rare game, and this particular piece was is more rare as it includes the sought after metal Barbarian Prince miniature, in true 25mm scale, which sometimes sells for far more than the game itself.

I haven't got this game to the table yet, but I do hope to do so, soon. One thing holding me back is that I'd like to paint the Prince, but I've currently got an Israelite Army on the table, followed by a pair of Blood Bowl teams... you know how it goes if you're into miniatures! So, this may wait until I've had time to paint up the Prince, and then it's off to FANTASTIC ADVENTURE!

Re-Design

I've been working on a re-design of this game for a couple of weeks now. This has been a fun job for me. In part, I undertook the re-design to research this type of story game and be able to take it apart and put it back together, to help with my next game design.

My goals have included making the rules and events books easier to read, designing a set of counters to assist in-game bookkeeping and re-designing the map for visual clarity.

I am modest enough to say this re-design is not in the same class as the amazing work on other venerable games like Merchant of Venus and Magic Realm, but I think I've done the game justice.

I've been thinking about making this game, I have all the files from the original one. But I've been on the fence about it since most of the scans I have found aren't that great.

Then I see what you have done for it. My interested in making this game is now in position #2. (Right under Aether Captains which I am currently working on)
