Lindy came home for a week long break. On Friday her and I brought some games to Tim Hortons and played Jaipur and En Garde there over coffee and doughnuts. If Jaipur turned a few heads and got some comments, En Garde turned far more. THere where a few people in there who could not take their eyes off that game. It was great fun. Later at home we also played Undermining.

Also played this weekend was an online game of Scrabble and on Sunday I taught Lindy At the Gates of Loyang. She really liked it.

5 games played this weekend

We have now played 3 times at MacDonalds, twice at Burger King, once in the airport and once at Tim Hortons. Never so many looks as this time, though.

It's not On Guard-a.

I've heard everyone from a guy reviewing on The Dice Tower to customers in the game store I work at and once a coworker explaining the game pronounce it completely wrong.

I even did it once because I kept hearing it.

Fencing!

I'd love to see some more and better games that go more deeply into the tactics and "feeling" of the actual fight rather than simply simulate whether you're hit or not. Doesn't have to be renaissance or "musketeer" style, any sort of melee combat would be fine. I've been trying to think of ways to expand "en garde" with more details about the types of attacks and defences, but without much luck. I know there was a renaissance themed RPG (don't remember the name) that tried to simulate some of this in the combat system with cards, but I'm not sure how well it worked.

Maybe the problem is that such games would tend to be 2-player games?

Note: Most of my gaming group are fencers!

People who actually fence have said that this captures the feel of it rather well.

That would make this simple game Knizia's most theme-rich title?

Reiner Knizia abstracted the fencing theme into a game with a linear track, pawns, and a deck of 25 simple numbered cards (5 each of values 1-5). Movement of pawns is still both forward and backward, and the game is surprisingly thematic.

That's a timely question as will be revealed more later on.

I actually don't remember the year. It would have probably been 1986 or 1987. I was helping a friend teach a fencing class at the University (I did that for about 3 or 4 semesters). One night during the dreaded drop add week I was at another friends apartment. One of his women friends was there too and she was complaining how hard it for her to get into classes she was trying to get. She then mentioned that even the fencing class she was trying to take was full. Well she was a very attractive red head. Of course, I felt the need to speak up and tell her I'd get her in. So, she showed up the next day and I asked my friend to sign the waiver for her. Of course, he did. Well, I didn't quite understand that she wanted to be in the class, but she wasn't much for actually going to classes. So, she was rarely there.

Fast forward a couple years. I was having a party and my roommate came in with a friend. It was her. She was happy to see me, but that followed with disappointment when my girl friend at the time came in and sat down with me. We did break up a short time later and Sabrina (oh that's my wife, I hadn't mentioned her name yet) tells me that for months she was trying to get me to notice her. She borrowed an album and kept forgetting to bring it back (thinking I'd come get it), one party she told me she was too drunk to go home so I offered to let her crash in my bed (she later tells me women are NEVER too drunk to get home unless they don't want to go home), and a few other things like that.

It wasn't until months later that she basically attacked me when we got home after an incident on a mosh pit where I took care of a guy that was getting too rough with her. That was the Saturday after Thanksgiving. We spent a lot of time together. My friends were wondering where I had disappeared to.

She said she wasn't much for Valentine's Day so we celebrated, but didn't make a big deal about it. That year Chinese New Year's Day fell on the 15th and my roommate had a big party. Sabrina and I where laying on the couch talking when she said something like "you want to shack up, have a kid, get married or something?". I said ""I'll opt for the marriage" We were married the following Sept. about 10 months after we started dating.

In 2 days, that will be 20 years ago.

Poker chips, meeples, and cards 1-5 in 5 suits from Battle Line...

You could skip the chips and use the Carc scoreboard for something more picturesque, but the spaces are a bit small...

Swords made from paper clips. Technically you don't need the swords, but this is a game about fencing. Meeples just standing there without weapons would just look silly.

Hint: The other side of the paper clip wire wraps under the non-weapon arm to hold it in place (not shown in the photo). No need to glue the sword to the meeple for it to stay on. No meeples were harmed for the taking of this photo.

I don't own this game, and I've never played it. I've played another game of the same title by Slugfest, but seeing that is not my favorite game, I'm not going to list it.

So why am I listing a game I don't own, and have never played?

This game, is designed by Dr. Knizia, who I do own many of his games, and is of a "topic" that I am very fond of.

If you do look at my micro badges, you will find "Fencing Fan", and between Fencing and Board Games, you will find my two of my passions in life. And my passion for fencing goes beyond just fencing. I am also a certified fencing coach by the USFCA.

I have used this quote during the instruction of fencing.

And that's the brilliance of the quote itself. It applies to all hobbies, be it Board Games, or Fencing, or whatever. The goal is to win, but its the playing of the game thats important, and not the outcome of the game.

And my favorite game of all time? I'm going to have to go with Axis and Allies. It's the game that first got me into board gaming.

Looks like Sirlin games is "borrowing" most of the mechanics for their next release, Flash Duel, which claims to be "inspired by" En Garde.

Well, the "original" Flash Duel was very much an En Garde light. Shazamm! is on the same family, though on the latter the way you move back and forth is a bit more convoluted.

Reading the rules for Flash Duel reminded me that there's an endgame step in En Garde that I completely forgot about and in fact have probably never done correctly. When the deck is drawn out, if the fencers are in attacking distance, both players face their hands and if one player has more attacking cards for the current range he's declared the winner. If no one has the right cards, THEN progress along the piste determines the winner. Now I definitely need to play this game again. Also wouldn't mind picking up Flash Duel -- or, more likely, waiting for someone else to buy Flash Duel and then copying all the character abilities into a notebook for use with my En Garde set.

A classic,...really a true classic in boardgame design. Simple yet engaging. If you liked Lost Cities then you will like En Garde.

I wouldn't pay too much for the game since all you are really paying for is the rules. The components being two pawns, a number line and two decks of 25 cards (5 of each number from 1 to 5)

The surprise package for me in this list, a new purchase of a game I have discovered via my iPhone where it has been played hundreds of times. We played our first game this week, and Nic has promoted it into the suitcase without hesitation! Yes Nic does like fencing and used to do it, but she assures me that theme has nothing to do with it, she likes the speed of the game and the fact that even the basic game has a lot of depth to it, which she feels will only be gotten to grips with in time.

This one has displaced a few other strong last candidates, notably Mr Jack, Bohnanza, just to name a few...
